Interestingly, the video likely didn't really make any money, due to embeds not having ads on them, thus indirectly costing UA-cam even more than hosting a 600 million view video normally would.
This has been changed a while ago, and unless changed again, ads work on embedded videos. I just don't think they turned them on, if you want to have something loop in the background, you'd never enable them.
From Google: "When you turn on ads for your channel, you can share in revenue from ads being served within the UA-cam Video Player embedded on other websites or applications. Note that embedded videos will honor the same ad enablement settings as videos on youtube.com."
But it also wouldn't be the first time that their own articles are outdated.
yknow whats crazier, too? I think embeds are actually a bit more to host because its through an embed, which connects to the host. Not sure if im right, but wouldn't that mean it's hitting 1 extra place before hitting the discord client? If so, that would basically 1.5x or even 2x it lol

@@savinglee. Any embeds in discord are cached by discord so it's an additional 1 request for all plays. However in this specific case an embed wasn't used as far as I can tell and the youtube video was just directly embedded into discord which makes it not use an additional request

Between Discord accidentally viewbotting their way to a world record, Landfall releasing their own version of Lethal Company, and Team Cherry revealing the Xbox store page and ESRB rating for Hollow Knight Silksong, this has definitely been one of the more whacky April Fools days that I've experienced.

6:00 - Just an FYI - UA-cam would only transmit the video a single time to each user, the player will cache the video (particularly one that short), so it can loop it forever without transmitting much data, but the counter still ticks up every loop. It's still likely been sent to a few million people who would never have clicked on it though. Also, I don't think it was monetized, so it's unlikely that there's really all that much damage involved here, other than them setting a record that no one's going to break (since presumably UA-cam is going to be pretty upset with whoever pulls something like that again, else everyone will do it.. imagine Microsoft having a popup background video player in Windows, so that every single person on the planet with a Windows PC and access to UA-cam burns through thousands of loops a day).

Im pretty sure if you have it cached, it wont count as a new view. Relooping a video in a normal way wont get counted.
Discord must have done something that allows a refresh of some sort to allow another view to happen

So if the video gets cached, the api call is still working to up the view ticker but not restreaming the video from a server? That's at least as much as I understand. I would've thought it didn't cache and each view streamed from a server counts as a view, while cached do not add a new view each iteration

Ludwig, as a content creator that makes short clips, that video is not in the shorts category but in normal videos, and normal videos don't get ads until they're above 30 seconds, so that video probably hasn't even made 10 dollars.

The record also isn't broken (as far as we know). Supersonic Unity had an ad in 2021 that gain an approximate 1.2b views.
This seems like an unintentional loophole exploit from Discord. Unfortunate for Mr Beast, but it brings in an interesting point about how views on UA-cam can be artificially inflated. There should be a threshold for repetitive views from the same user on a single video.

As far as i know embedded youtube videos on other sites aren't supposed to count for views anymore. So it's understandable that the discord devs were confused. It's litteraly not supposed to be able to give them views on the video.

for the record, based on the video size at the vp9 encoded 1080p (some views will be lower so keep that in mind) at 1.4 Billion views as of now, it used about 4.3 petabytes of data. this doesn't include audio, or the various extra bandwidth used by youtube's extra features, and google's tracking stuff.
so it's likely the number would be closer to 5 petabytes of data, in a day, or nearly 57 Gigabytes per second, half a terabit per second, for an entire day.
obviously, there is a lot of caching and other neat stuff in this chain, so it wouldn't be anywhere close to that amount in reality, but the "theoretical bandwidth" does illustrate that this wouldn't be a trivial task, even at the scale of youtube

Although the video was played hundreds of millions of times, the bandwidth part is a little misleading because you probably wouldn't need to redownload it every play.
Yeah, anyone looping the video would only download it once and then it would just pull it from cache. Actually since the video was viewed so many times in a short timespan I'm guessing a lot of the downloads were pulled from isp caches making it even less expensive to UA-cam.

Embedded videos only show ads if the original video was monetized, which I'd be surprised by. Because otherwise people would've been spammed by ads and I'm sure someone would have complained about that, but also you'd think about this beforehand how horrible this would be as experience. The data transfer is definitely something, but after sending the video once, the rest of the loops do not require to be downloaded again (else Shorts would insanely expensive), the only thing transmitted is information about when it was stopped etc.
Sad seeing all these people mistaking this guy for Ludwig. Smh.

I love April fool's on yt. It's one of the longest lasting traditions on the site, it gives creators a chance to be cheeky with their audience, and it's overall a bit of clean fun.
Depending on UA-cam’s optimization this may not have been as bad as it seems for them. 18 seconds is short enough that the entire video can get loaded into a buffer and if they’re looping it VIA UA-cam’s API I would HOPE that buffer doesn’t get refreshed every loop. Essentially that would mean they only had to pay to load the video for each actual person that watched it rather than the total number of views, which is likely drastically less than 600,000,000 people
The best thing about april fools to me is the video game april fools updates. They're so much fun usually.
Since it's looped, it likely wasn't actually served 600m times. most of it was just pulled from local caches.
