champion jack dempsey beat the hell out of giant jess willard 4 years later in 1919 and a new champion was born and it was considered the worse beat down.
If this fight had been scheduled for the modern day 12-round fight that the champions of today do, Jack would have won by a lopsided margin. Jack had fought many fighters that would have beat Jess. One of Johnsons seconds for this fight, Sam McVey was one, Sam Langford was two, Joe Jeanette was three, and Jim Jeffries in his prime, was the 4th fighter that Jack fought that could beat Jess. Big Jess just outlasted a 37-year old Champion. As the fight passed the 16-round mark, age, the heat, and exhaustion all three played a part in helping Jess to win. Jess was a big and strong fighter. But Jack in his prime would have handled Williard, more or less, like he did five years earlier (1910) when he defended his Title against former Heavyweight King Jim Jeffries. Jeffries had been coaxed out of retirement to meet and defeat Jack Johnson. Racial ugly was strong in those days and these near-do-wells got disappointed when on July 4, 1910 Jack would meet and knock out Jim Jeffries in the 15th round I believe. A tko rather than a 10-count for Jeffries. The two fights that Johnson participated in would end in similar ways.
They ruined the ending of the fight. What the heck was that??? What were they thinking??
Jack johnson was a big muscular guy at 6ft 1 half inches tall and he is dwarfed by giant jess willard who is 6ft 6 half inches tall and knocked our Jack johnson.
