To my ears these 3rd Gen Air pods are more comfortable compared to the newer Pro version with the soft gel tips. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxgl8SzyQoymMu-S3V55Dskg5QJ8xr1yCR That said, compared to the 3rd Gen, I notice these do not stay planted in the ear as well. One design issue I think, is you squeeze the stem and click it twice to advance your songs. On 3rd gen you tap the large speaker. The difference is by grabbing the stem each time, you tend to loosen the bud fit in your ear. Not always, but the bud falls out a few times while running. The old tap to change never had that problem for me. I would not have changed that tap function. That said, the newer Pro version sticks in the ear, almost airtight if you want that. I do not like that Airtight fit. So that's why I'd stay with this version as the best trade off of comfort, use, and overall feel.
Love these earphones. The Foam didnt really fit my ear but I swapped them out for a silicon set I had and it didnt impact the ANC much at all. That 8 to 9 hours of ANC lasts me throughout work so I'm very happy with them.
@CuriouStan honestly, I can't really answer that. I mostly use them around the house or at work. But I work a medical standby so they are used when sitting at a desk for long periods of time. I have worn them multiple times while washing a car outside here in Texas or while walking and have never had them dislodge or require adjustment as the silicone set I put on them fits great. But that's just my experience.
@CuriouStan that's fair. But I can say that Linus is not over selling just how good the Noise cancelling is. It really is better than a lot of over the ear headphones. But I can definitely see needing the wings though.
I'm loving these earbuds too, i have been using them for almost 8 months. I use it in work, home or when i am just bored, I've only dropped it once but so far, it's the best earbud purchase i have done so far. Great upgrade from my previous WF1000XM3.
@CuriouStan no problem with sweat just may cause ear wax since it stays snugged in your ear
Sony should just work on marketing this stuff man. Their stuff is so good.

@@CockatooDude No, he has to be using these for white noise and ANC to go to sleep. The battery would be dead after 4 hours so long before he woke up.
Seems bit silly and very, very painful if you sleep on your side. We sleep with earplugs and white noise (fan). Neither will stop working after a few hours.
Just got a pair, they're great. Musicality is typical Sony which is top notch. Just a good clean sound from bass to mids to treble. Noise cancellation isn't quite as good as my over the ear WH-1000's but still fiddling with the fit so we'll see. Still good enough to muffle any overly loud obnoxious people who manage to wander a little too close to me.
That tiny pocket was actually originally designed for a pocket watch, but it's good for any small thing you want to protect from damaging/catching on, or vice versa, whatever you're keeping in the other pocket. For example, that's where I keep my pocket knife.
I keep a benchmade bugout knife and a Olight warrior 2 flashlight perfectly side by side in the pocket watch pocket. 😄

Be careful using the little pants pocket to hold any air buds case! While the case seems like the perfect object to put inside that otherwise useless pocket, they are prone to popping out, especially while walking. The case will open upon hitting the ground and the buds will be strewn across the pavement, damaging both the case and the buds.
Once i tripped and fell, smashing my new pair of earbuds that was in my pocket😢 will never make that mistake again.

Sorry did you hear they have no Bluetooth-Multipoint function?
@@WELDE83 who cares? Without, a minor inconvenience at most and most people just connect them to their phone 🤷♀️
@@WELDE83 I don't think the AirPods have "multipoint" per se but I think multipoint is overrated and often causes issues for example if you want to connect a third device. What's more important is for a device to take over a connection which is what the AirPods do and I really like that. I don't have to disconnect my laptop or iPad to start listening on my phone, I can just select the AirPods and they will switch over. That functionality is more important in my opinion that multipoint, not that multipoint isn't a nice feature, two or three device multipoint with reliable connection stealing would be ideal.
@@mudgie0205 Nonsense, the normal consumer has second devices in use mobile + notebook, tablet, switch... and every other manufacturer has implemented the BT feature for years from JBL to Jabra ... Sony itself has implemented it in the new MX4 Overears but not here. That makes no sense...
@@oliverpolden Sure Apple has provided a kind of multipoint functionality in their ecosystem. The functions also work with other multipoint headset too. I use the multipoint function with Jabra and a JBL headset on notebook, business cell phone, private cell phone and TV. But I had hoped that if a big like Sony comes it provides there as with Apple suitable software and Sonys soundquality.

These things are so good they sound so good.. I'll admit I'm having a hard time getting them to fit my ears.. I'm a bigger person but I have smaller ear canals.. the smaller buds are way too small, the mediums are weird, the bigger ones are way too big ,I've always had a problem with Wireless earbuds for this reason.. That being said I stuck with the mediums kept adjusting and stuffing them in my ears because the music was so good I am literally emotionally spent spent listening to it.
Finally picked up a pair. Been using the XM3 version for several years now and I adore them. So much so I immediately replaced the first pair after they had a close encounter with a glass of water.
Holy shit these new ones are incredible. Much smaller case, earbuds are tiny and actually fit in your ears (the XM3 stuck out a long way) and the sound! Sound quality is miles better and the XM3 already sounded incredible. The ANC is somehow hugely improved, around the level of my over-ear XM3 pair or even better and voice quality on calls is amazing now they have bone conduction sensors.

That pocket is for condoms. Or, if you're older, house keys.

SECOND THAT. I ALSO USE THEM FOR AIRPODS
We are at the awkward stage where these are more expensive than the Sennheiser MTW 2's. Currently they are on sale for $250 and $220 for the Black and White models respectively while the Sonys are at the normal price of $280! I'm so torn on what to get because using earbuds independently was a must have for me, but that was also because my old AirPods didn't have the battery to last me on one earbud through a whole work day with just charging on my 15 minute breaks. I would have to swap earbuds through the day, but when one pooped out I was screwed. My main priorities are sound quality and being able to use only 1 bud for an 8 hour work day with only 2-3 15 minute charging intervals a day. If anyone has tried out one, or both of these earbuds, and uses them for a similar situation I would love to hear you feedback. The quality of the ANC is also important because I need to be able to easily talk to people, and hear a radio while using them.
I got these after buying the Samsung buds pro and absolutely hating how they fit and felt in my ears and being totally disappointed in the anc (the call quality was good though). These wf-1000xmf & the xh-1000xm5 over the ear headphones have legit changed my life! The anc has made working in a very loud and busy environment possible even for me a person who is very sensitive to noise. Also I love the software and features and haven't experienced any bugs or issues at all. The only downside is the $ but for something that works so well its worth it imo.

Yea that's the weakpoint for these headphones. Mic is pretty garbage. Pretty perfect for everything else though
Like many, I would like and benefit from a mic review too. What I’m finding is when reviewers do not review a certain function and component it’s more than likely trash for that function. Reviewers choose what to leave out. So I focus on those things not said.

*A warning to anyone still looking to purchase these*
I've had these for a year and a couple months and battery degradation is a MAJOR problem with these. They no longer hold a charge well and drain very quickly. It's a problem that seems to plague this model right around after the 1 year mark. Conveniently Sony only put a 1 year warranty on these, and their "advice" after the warranty expires is to turn off all of the premium features to increase battery life. You know, the extra features that you get for paying a premium price. You might as well get a cheap pair of skullcandy headphones. At least then you get what you pay for. $300(with tax) seems like a steep price to pay for disposable earbuds. And I say disposable because there doesn't seem to be an easy way to get the replacement cell for the earbuds, you can pretty much only replace the case battery.
TLDR: If you want earbuds that last, don't get these.
They are $178 for Black Friday

I have the Airpods Pro with foam ear tips made by various manufacturers (but no longer include Comply in the lineup because they aren't quite as good) and the sound quality has improved quite a bit. It has a bit more low end emphasis but not quite as much a 'V' shape as my Jabra Elite Active 75t. I plan on buying these 1000X-M4 buds though as I didn't care for the bulky size of the 1000X-M3
I would like to add something regarding the Sony XM4s.
I have a pair and don't get me wrong they are fantastic in almost every way, but have a well known and glaring issue. Long term battery life is not consistent.
The battery in the case and the right ear bud on my set are pretty much done for, barely a year after purchase and with normal use. Conveniently just within days of being outside warranty. This is not an isolated issue either. Minimal research shows many examples of the same problem, with batteries on the buds and or case essentially dying after about a year and just after Sony's 1 year warranty period.
And Sony, who must be aware of this I imagine, are not forthcoming with assistance. I understand warranty is as it is, but for a wide spread issue that seems to be a technical issue with many of their buds I expected more direct assistance when I engaged their support team.
But what I got, and everyone else I came across got, was a call to either pay to have them shipped to a repair facility and repaired at cost or buy a brand new pair. For a product marketed as premium and costing as much as they do this situation hardly seemed appropriate and definitely soured my opinion of the product. For those that got good sets, they work very well. And I cannot argue the quality of every other part of these. But why pay close to $300 for a product that has such a high chance of only lasting a year?
I hope for the LMG team to see this because I'd feel bad for someone buying these on their recommendation to then get the short end of the stick.
Great video. I’m waiting on mine to get delivered today!

Damn, best description of the sound of all time. If it truly sounds like that, then its a go. 👍
Just like Sony always does, they do a 30-50% discount in a few months
They do? I'm new to this game
Do you think they would befoee August? I got college starting then
@@dbsllama6042 maybe
That's what I'm waiting for
When is a “few” months to you?
Man your airpods pro case is so cool! Where did you get it?
The buttons at the side of the ear buds are extremely sensitive, just by my hair touching it, the audio mode will switch from nc to ambiance.
I would be interested in hearing the difference between the foam and silicone tips. In my experience the Comply style tips do provide a more custom feel however, the porous properties of the foam make the bass seem less punchy and make the sound seem a little thinner. As a lifelong Sony fan I am very interested in trying these. My current XB700 work great with spare silicone tips from an older pair of MDR XB90EX which are my previous favorite. Good video. Thanks.
A comparison between the WF-1000XM3 and WF-1000XM4 would have been very sweet
They really do need a more catchy name. Goddammit sony why is your marketing team run by engineers ?
@@namonaite yeah they opted in for functional name instead of cool one
I already have WH-1000Xm4 (before I had WH-1000Xm3) and the name just makes sense for me... WF for buds, 1000x for highest class and m4 as 4th gen
@@TTM1895 did you just mention Bose having better sound quality??? LMAO
@@TTM1895 thats subjective, I prefer the sound of the sonys over the bose. Specially cause sonys eq is a gamechanger
Are the 1000XM3 a good buy under $120 in 2021? Or are there any other alternatives? Tbh if the sound is top notch, I don’t mind carrying the big case in my office bag all day just wanting to get some music and call specific earbuds that can also capture good audio while recording videos.
it is not designed to be in a human ear
@@criceartman9284 😂😂
I very randomly bought these a few days ago, as my Jaybird Tarah Pro finally broke and they've discontinued tethered Bluetooth headphones. So far it's really good, although I prefer having a wire between the earphones.
Oh man, I love my XM3 but the case is way too big and my batteries are wearing unevenly so I've been holding out for the replacement to use the protection plan. As long as the quality is still there I'm hyped. Guess they finally added sweat and weather sealing too!
Just got mine last week, been running 3-4 miles in them and they fit so much better than the XM3s ever did.
@@burayan85 I know I'm riding off of a 3 weeks old comment but how is the fit when doing sports? my xm3 are horrible in that regard but excellent in every other way
I have the XM3 since April 2020, ever since i got them i used them quite heavily, during work & during home, than the batteries have worsened sadly.. so i bought the XM4 in July, ever since i still love them to this day.
@@karwan6385 tell me things that could be better about it, im thinking of buying it
Ive been using Jabra Elites 75t, started with 65t a few years ago. Never looked back! By Far the BEST Imho
I've got the XM3's and I absolutely adore them.
I'm thinking of getting these. Do you mind if I ask how the fit is? Are they able to stay in your ears if you were to jog and go to the gym? I had some Bose and the B&O e8's that sucked for the gym. I haf also dealt with connection issues. So I'm really interested in these. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Btw... Costco has these on sale atm.
I just switched from the XM3s to the AirPods Pro solely for the comfort, I felt the Sonys I had to constantly readjust in my ears and prolonged use always made my ears ache a little
Hey if you ever get the chans to try the XM4 like in a store, friend or co worker you should! They are much better in fitting than the xm3 (in my ear at least) and much better in audio than both the xm3. But if you really like the fit with the APP, the XM4 is not an immediate buy. Although better than XM 3 they are not as good as APP. ( Tried my frinds APP)
Have you tried the Bose Quietcomforts?
"wow, these earbuds are better in every way, but I might not use them because of my fixation to keep them in this almost-a-pocket"
Comfort is kinda a big one for tech as personal as earphones
@@thenoobperspective7588 yeah, but the case is way smaller than the wf 1000xm3
Yeah, the XM3s were the wireless buds I hear most "audiophiles" reccomend if price range is doable, losing out to the Pros in the stuff Apple does well. Def for sound quality Sony gets the win, and these seem to address the other stuff.
Great review! What I was wondering. I've owned a lot of earphones in my life.
What I always experience, especially with the in-ears with the smaller drivers, out of the box the sound sometimes disappoints a little bit. There is usually too much highs and mids compared to the lows and the sound is kind of flat, it's hard to describe but I've experienced this with every ear bud I've ever owned.
After some hours of playing music this always improves a lot. After a few days of playing a lot of music they always sound so much more dynamic and the lows mids and highs are more in balance.
I guess this is the same like speakers who have to be played for some time to make the rubber loosen a little before unleashing their full potential.
Can you do a follow up for these Sony xm1933nndndn (or whatever they are called) to check ehat the sound quality is after hours of music playback?
I'm interested to know.
how do that work? Do the earbuds need to "warm-up" to work better or it's just the rubber tips adapting to your ear ?
@@meik0349 It's bullshit. This dude just mentally warms up to his new ear buds basically.
@@Vinz3ntR It's possible I guess, that the driver system in these little things needs to sort-of 'run in' for some time before they settle into their long term state. A lot of people think loudspeakers need time to settle in too.
It may be possible though that you are getting used to them a little as well? Just sayin. The main thing is that they sound better to you over time & not worse!
I'm excited after ordering a slightly used (hopefully!) pair of black XF-1000XM4's for myself! I was gonna get the next ones down, but I like my music.
I have had mine for over a year now, and the noise canceling is good enough for a fabrication shop environment. Sound is great, bass is great, battery life is still phenomenal on the buds and charging dock. Only thing that sucks is the price but these are worth it - if you are good at not losing these pricey things. The case is very smooth and slippery, easily dropped or could slide out of a pocket.
One thing that has been surprisingly important for me is what the mic sounds like on ear buds. Specifically, does it pick up a whole bunch of ambient noise? I'd love if you could add this to your tests
6:44 the settings cog in the bottom right is for manual eq adjustment
Sad, this should be top comment
Such a good review! 👍 thank you!
Hey Linus, in the last part where you switched on the fan, was audio being captured via the buds, or was it coming in through your microphone you used for the entire video? I'd really be grateful if you could reply to this question as I've been looking to buy a nice pair of buds that cancel out the household noise of kids, TV, etc since I've been working from home for 2 yrs now and would continue for the foreseeable future.
Please make sure do an “UPDATE” vid; so we know if still using the Sony WF1000XM4/B and if still like em.
Thx✌🏻
Have the previous one and they keep falling out, they are really heavy, wish he would have tested that with a shake test. Also would've loved a comparison to the previous one. I was quite underwhelmed coming from 15$ to my current pairs which where like 200$
Can I use all options thru taps and touches? like play/stop, next/prev, volume +/-, NC on/off, ambient sound
so for example:
play/stop - tap left
next - 2 tap left
prev - 3 tap left
volume up/down - long press left / right
NC on/off - 3 tap right
ambient sound - 2 tap right
Linus: “I’m ditching my AirPod Pros”
Narrator: That was determined to be a lie.

@@elizabeth3280 well the wf-1000xm4 are really amazing. I had some AirPods Pro but I bought those and I don’t regret a single move of it.

If you have iPhone AirPods still win
@@boygenius538_8 why
@@boygenius538_8 i use iphone and xm3. Tried both, for me personally there’s absolutely no reason at all to take the pros instead of xm3.
@@raywcksn I have tried both and bought xm3's because I don't use an Iphone, but the Pro's were SOOOOOOOOOO much more comfortable it was insane, the XM3's need 20$ memory foam eartips to stay in my ears(that degrade pretty quickly), tried all the one's they came with and they wouldn't stay in for longer than 30 seconds while sitting and not moving.
Still went with them because the airpods aren't the best with Android, and XM3's were 100$ cheaper at the time, so enough to cover 5 eartip purchases, and that's enough for the few years the battery will last, and with memory foam eartips I do agree they're much better.
just got my pair today at a very good £185 UK and 1 Day after i bought them they are now £200, and they sound Great with my Samsung A51 phone but still trying to get them paired to my PC on win10 running a 5900X and ASUS Hero VIII X570
got it sorted just press on both units while in your ears while you are trying to connect to Bluetooth for about 20 seconds and it seemed to reset them and they connected and they sound even better with my XAE-5 Sound card
Very funny I use that pocket for keeping keys and removable storage and it is a great choice earbuds too!
I really wish you reviewed the call quality on it as well. Most headphones don't pick up on the users voice very well.
Linus, you took this review to the next level. The one complaint about my Samsung buds pro is the fact that I can not ware them while riding a bike because of the wind noise. Thanks for including that in your review
i’m trading my buds pro in for these!
Cool review. Anyone know if you need an app for your phone to control these features? Looks like you should be able to use software for a computer also? I'm trying to figure out a good pair of headphones with LDAC or APTX to pair with a new DAP player. I was thinking these with the Sony NW-A55 would be a nice combo!
I kinda like the small pocket thing, never thought of it!
I have the WF-1000XM3 and I love them, so, I can't wait to check them out! It looks like they've made them smaller than the last gen too which is a good thing. My one gripe with the XM3's is the touch button so I'm hoping these are better like they seem to be
I lost one of my XM3s and ended up getting the xm4s and the improvement is actually impressive
Quick question: Why does Linus sleep with his AirPods Pros in his ears every night?
Kids?
Yeah, that's just weird and I would worry about my ear's health
@@user-ex8vu5fy5r His kids aren't super young anymore though iirc.
He probably has something playing to help him fall asleep. I do the same
I slept wearing an over-ear headphone once, thankfully didn't break in half. My purpose was to try and beat insomnia, and it was my only driver at that time so yeah
TaoTronics SoundLiberty 97 are my current favourites. Really good earbuds
Do these earbuds stay in the ear whilst working out or running? I own the Samsung buds with the wing tips and they are pretty sturdy and stay in the ear.
