The heat tape is being used by a lot of jdm builders and professional drift teams as well. Question though why not wrap the header? The modern header wraps worked fantastic. I've done Underwood temps on one of my Supras (I have 3 it's a disease) and without the foil tape and just a header wrap and aluminized coating was 80 degrees different at idling full operating temps. The wrap isn't for reflection but more to keep the heat in tyhe tubes by insulating the tubes wiuth a carbon wrap and taking away the heat sink they become without. As well the length of time I get before it cracks and eventually rots itself to death is about 4 times the amount of unwrapped. It could be more as I haven't had to replace one since the alums coat and wrap I started. Oh by the way these are stainless I build so not factory stuff that lasts longer than home builds.
Heat wrap is extremely bad for under bonnet applications. It keeps the heat in the tubes which then leaks back into the head. No doubt you;ve seen headers glow red. That heat needs to be cooled off fast. Heat wrap traps that heat. Heat wrap should only be used sparingly in places that require it. Around the start motor for example. Although i always wrap the start motor and not the tubes.
Another series I won't be able to watch. Cool beans
Nick Metcalf download their app, you can still watch it for free, just with ads
go over to Mighty Car Mods there building a 240z also.
Izumi Konata I like the 240z but I like motor trend for road kill, dirt everyday and the classics. This series looks cool but I'm a Honda guy so boostedboiz are the go to but MCM has great content too
Nick Metcalf what do you mean? Just go to their website and watch it. It's free
Free if your in the US maybe but in AUS its not free and even when sub'd u cant watch it due to regional issues .
I had a 240 Z with triple Webers. It worked like a charm. Mine actually had no heat shield and I didn't have any problem even running it in South Texas in 105F weather.I did not track it though and it might have been another story then.
id really love to see the full episode on youtube.
You can watch the full episode for free on Motor Trend's website, or mobile app. (As well as the second episode)
nah, id much rather pay nothing in the future too.
So we can't watch this in Australia? Lucky I read these comments, I was just about to sign up
You can watch it if you're willing to use a proxy, (Such as US Web Proxy) or a VPN. (Such as Hola) Currently, you don't have to sign up for anything. The first 2 episodes of this show can be watched for free. No account, or subscription required.
I watch you guys all the time
Got Motortrend (Australia) but its blocked thanks to Foxtel
I can almost see in my mind's eye a few guys sitting around drafting tables with their slide rules and pencils, smoking cigs, discussing how to make a straight-6. "I know!! Let's put the exhaust manifold directly beneath the carbs! Heat rises, right? Good idea!"
Why does Australia not have access to this? I mean, seriously?? You don’t even have the rights to your own show??
They might own the show but their distribution
egional licensing is why we don't get it free here in AU. Might not even be them that stopped it from being free in Australia, could be a local network blocking it.
Corporate Dummies.
Why not wrap the headers?
Probably cuz they wanna see them turn their pretty colors? Idk wondered that myself. I know wrapping can cause its own issues, so maybe they just opted not to
A couple of reasons looks for one but also heat wrapping has been found to have a reaction to some exhaust coatings and stainless pipes. Most companies that ceramic coat exhausts recommend not to use heat wrap as it ruins the ceramic coating over time.
Love this show! Hopefully they’ll get to do a te27 someday.
Great series idea! But I'm curious... why do the separate shots of them talking about what's going on? As seen on 0:18 and 0:54, for example. I'm not sure if you guys think it makes the videos look more professional, but it doesn't. It makes the videos look more scripted and fake. Like it belongs on the History Channel. Additionally, at 0:25, it's so clear that the director told him, "now say to the camera why you think these are super cool." It feels very dry and fake, like I said. One of the many reasons us fans love Roadkill is because of the lack of this type of element in the series. It's clearly all raw and unscripted.
This is a show that airs on TV, not just the internet. Now that Discovery owns Motor Trend, they are changing the name of the Velocity channel to "Motor Trend Network." A lot of Discovery's car shows are now on Motor Trend's website as well.
Discovery owns Motor Trend?! Oh my God... O.O Thanks for the update.
Yep. Discovery bought Motor Trend's parent company late last year. You're welcome.
It’s all scripted.. it’s a high production TV show..
MCM and MT both doing a Datsun 240Z, pretty cool.
B is for Build is doing a 240Z build as well.
I can't see this being another joint venture. As much as I love Roadkill, these MT shows are reality TV shows; just look at the standard realityTV interview framing on the right, talking left past the camera, to some nub, as if anything said isn't scripted...
bleachedsound one video is on UA-cam one isn't not cool.
How did it mount up?
It is gold.
Just to clear things up.
I'm so glad you put the heat tape on the stainless steel heat shield because most Fabricators wouldn't have even bothered. They would have opted for something cheap they picked up at Pep Boys.
pep boys does sell rci...
thugathugacation Like I said, they would have opted for something cheap from Pep-Boys. Something you spray on or something that really isn't heat shielding.
I'd space wrap the exhaust. Just keep the heat out of the engine bay and then you don't need to worry so much about cooking the carbs and vapor locking it or leaning it out.
A heat shield still is a good but only treating a symptom instead of fixing the problem.
WE.WANT.MORE!
This was a great show, I became a paid subscriber on the motor trend site specifically because of this show only, but now that all episodes have been pulled and the show apparently has been canceled I have canceled my subscribtion as a result. Such a shame too because it was the only show on the site worth watching
pity we still can't watch these in Australia even though we are paying the same $10USD a month..
You can get around the region lock if you're willing to use a proxy, (Such as US Web Proxy) or a VPN. (Such as Hola)
Same as NZ and Japan apparently.
Pretty stupid..
they canceled the show, the episodes that did air have all been pulled from the site too
Hey! It’s another show blocked in my country. Motortrend seem to care less and less about their international subscribers.
The show is cool just wish they would show some how to stuff like explain the difference with cam sizes cool stuff too mod out the engine with.
hi how are I been watching the the show and it looks excellent I'm from the east coast I do not know if you guys get all the way up here I have a car if they can take it for modification is hard to do my car is a Toyota U.S.A. Toyota a 1988 corolla 2 door coupe TRUENO...do you guys do not only jdm but Americans also let me know...
that heat shield will work just about 2 to 3 minutes before its just as hot as exhaust manifold it self. You need some insulating material either glued or pinched between 2 of plates like the one you made to actually make it work in real life.
use your head, not your wallet ( when mistakes starts to add up ) .
Hey how about some heat wrap on the header? Space shuttle really. Sucka
Nice
dream car!!!!!!!!!
I want a 240z 😭 everybody is doing mods and it's impossible to find a Z in Mexico
Hello there, is anyone who can answer for some questions ?
I love JDM market, even more i love JDM youngtimers, living in EU is ehh painful ... i tried to find a Nissan S30 240z for sale - nothing fancy just a base, that i could build myself ... those cars are so rare... and so expensive
Can you tell me how much i need to spend to buy 240z from Japan or USA, just a price of the car ...
I bought 280z with 60k miles for $800 in Michigan.the floor pans and frames rails were pretty much goneI'm building it currently
Zack Kutchins got any links to the build, like a forum page i would love a 240 my self.
Bringatrailer.com
p0u1 I don't but so far I've striped the car of everything. I ordered triple weber 40s, cam, and a 6-1 headers and flat top pistons for the engine. And for the car I'm working on all of the rust. But I might make a page about my build for fun :)
Paying for mtod subscription, still cant watch most of the content.
...sigh... I'm in Japan, and I'm a MTOD member, but I cannot watch this show... Copyright issue....
The Tokyo Craftsman ahh... That sucks!
The Tokyo Craftsman don't worry most of the rest of the world isn't interested in paying for them.
thats 90% of thier content . i wont be Resubbing
Same here in NZ
The engine bay will still be hot, therefore, you will be drawing in hot air. You'd be better off making a cold air intake to feed fresh, ambient air into the carbs. You'd lose the cool factor of open carbs, but given the drawbacks, it may be worth it.
This channel doesn’t come on on my Tv... 😔
Jason Aker's brother?
Poor mans MCM.
0:51 СССР 2106 вроде
Oh it's a Lada! Nice lol
They say carbs make you fat, I say only if you put to much fuel through them.
It's about time your subscribe numbers are coming down...
Wangan
MTOD Mission statement:
1: Can't beat them, sellout.
2: Shill till the shilling cant be Shilled no more.
3:When all else fails.. copy someone else.
I kick myself every time I see a Datsun build. My old neighbor was giving one away I declined because I didnt have space to build it. Now that I do... I need to find one
Ayyy
Too bad its not free outside the us. Im off to mcm or autoedit or tons of others.
If you're willing to use a proxy, (Such as US Web Proxy) or a VPN, (Such as Hola) you can watch it for free.
aluminum disapates heat better
Tim Harris it also absorbs heat faster and fatigues quicker plus in this scenario you'd have to go a thicker gauge to try and have a comparable rigidity to stop it bouncing up and down while driving which in some scenarios would mean having to fit longer studs in the manifold to be able to mount it creating more work.
hii hiiii
Mighty car mods build is cooler
noise!!!!!
like
Hi motor trend
Dear motortrend, why promote a show which you have geofences? Disappointing to say the least.
