  • Watch Roadkill Extra on Motor Trend On Demand: bit.ly/2MYco1d Mike Finnegan’s 1955 Chevy with 535ci blown-Hemi power has become legendary, partially due to Roadkill Episode 70 where the guys had to rebuild the engine in the dragstrip pits. This Roadkill Extra is an extended scene from that episode as the new Hemi is swung back into the car. And just think, the engine has been in and out of the car and rebuilt a second time since this episode was shot.
    As you watch, cruise over to Facebook.com/RoadkillShow, follow us, and watch for future posts asking for your questions to be answered on the Q&A sessions that are posted every Friday on Roadkill Extra Powered by Dodge.

    You guys always make it look so easy when you're installing an engine on Roadkill, it's good to see you guys suffer through the pain and tribulations that the rest of us go through when installing a motor.

      Yep, it's good to see some real world struggle, even if it was heavily edited. It's such a pain to get engines and transmissions to mate like that.

    • @crezychameau

      I'm honestly a bit happy to see this is not uncommon. I thought I was a moron for not being able to align a transmission in less than a half hour.
      I'm a bit sad too because this means it won't be easier next time I do it ^^

      I pull the transmission with the engine, its only 2 more bolts to remove. It goes together so much easier outside the car.

      Footage like this is incredibly rare, they never show them working on some extend problem for a length of time like that with so little cuts. It's nice to see their actual building prowess as they encounter what would be unsolvable problems for many amateur car hobbyists.

    Back in the day when I did this, I assembled the engine + trans together outside the vehicle, then shoe-horned them in. No alignment issues then.

    • @Kneedragon1962
      @Kneedragon1962 6 років тому +2

      Yeah, but then you have to slip the whole huge ugly contraption in without smashing the radiator or the cross-member or something... Or you can't get the sump over the cross-member because the gearbox is hard up against the body. No matter which way you turn it or angle it, it's easier to put them in separate and then mate them up, but mating them up is also a bastard of a job.... There's no easy or elegant way to do this. In PRINCIPLE, it's simple, but principle is not the same as life.

    • @ywr969
      @ywr969 6 років тому +3

      In my experience, automatics were easier to mate up in the bay, while manuals were easier to mate up before installation. Headers were the beast -- usually left those positioned in the bay & attached before the motor mounts, because I could still move the engine around a bit to get to all the studs.

    • @Kneedragon1962
      @Kneedragon1962 6 років тому

      ... (dot-dot-dot like Trump...) I understand in the car factory, they have the body up in the air and the engine + trans on a stand, and then they take all the cross-members out and lower the body over the engine. Never tried that myself, partly because I don't want to remove the cross-members with the car supported in strange ways, because it will distort, and then when you tighten up the cross-members it will always be distorted... Like I said, in principle, it's simple...

    • @Kneedragon1962
      @Kneedragon1962 6 років тому +1

      LOL. Me or him? Last time I did it, it was a 202 cube straight Holden 6. I don't think I've ever pulled a V8 out or put one in.... I've done about 4 Ford sixes and about 7 or 8 Holden 6s, and well over a dozen Jap 4s. I'm more into bikes than cars, and I've never been a mechanic. Engines have come out because I've screwed them and now I needed to fix them.
      Tip, from experience, if you borrow your father-in-law's car, (Mazda 808) and the oil light comes on on the freeway, don't presume the wire has come loose, because you're late for work... The 1600 we dropped in to replace the 1300 I destroyed, was actually a much nicer engine, but still, it's hard to explain later why you saw the oil light and ignored it.....

    In the heavy truck mechanic world we use old bolts with the head removed as a alignment dowel to align engine and bell housing. Really helps to keep engine and transmission in synch, this can really help you guys out next time, I am 100% sure there is a next time. Next time do it on a Ditchbank in Famoso.

      Welcome to the age of entitlement. If any of these muppets complaining ever experienced an old pc with a modem that blocks your phone line, or early days of the internet and those free internet floppy disks/CDs, they would be grateful and appreciative of what UA-cam gives, and what content creators create for people, asking next to nothing in return for it.
      Instead, most of them are children born in the 1080p era, connected to broadband from day one of their lives and have only seen what the internet is what it is now. And the adults who complain, are only the ones who are also new joiners to technology and spent the early 90's and 2000's under a rock in the woods. They too have no understanding or appreciation of what exactly they're being given here.

    Leaving the clutch bolts loose while mating the engine and trans may be an option to consider. Possible only if your setup allows one of the clutch bolts to be tightened after assembly. Spin the engine for the rest. In 1980, my 66 GMC 1/2 Ton 327, M21 needed a roadside clutch replacement, had a spare clutch without an alignment tool, Friday on long weekend, 10 miles out of town, had an audience stop, plenty of hands to pull my carcass out if the tranny slipped. I was back on the road in about half an hour. A lucky repair.

      Expansion joints on a slab can be filled after the slab has been cured. Self leveling concrete or a product called PourStone work well. After it dries completely, the hoist can roll across the gap.

I helped my friend put his 1.5 single cam in his car in a snow storm in 14 inches of snow, in his front yard, with nothing more than my hands, and a jack that only went up half way...I muscled that engine and trans into the engine bay to line up the mounts. 6 months later he blew it up and we had to do it all over again with the old engine from my car when I went DOHC turbo. Now, I have a cherry picker. Lesson learned.

    You guys should release another Roadkill Garage episode to UA-cam. A lot of people don’t know what they’re missing, RG is legitimately as good as actual Roadkill. Releasing an episode might reel in some more customers.

    they say the struggle was real here...but shit the fenders were off and it was a straight shot in! put a slant 4 in a car with full stock fenders and front clip attached and not having a engine leveler and one chain... this was a walk in the park, people are just making a big deal out of it. And these guys know what they are doing...for the most part lol...and I get it, its not stock...

    See, there’s my problem. I don’t do my work at a track with bleachers. All these wasted years of doing it wrong! Seriously, how are you handling the driveline alignment to avoid vibrations? I would love to see an episode where you address that issue.

    dear roadkill, i have an idea. give us what we really want to see. a real world challenge, how many orange tagged broke down on the side of the road actual roadkill vehicles can you guys fix.. on the run. there is an unlimited supply of these "projects" strewn across America, with owners who cant afford a blower much less a tow truck to get it home. use your power for good, and put your good where it does the most. i personally would watch it.

      Yeah I know but in Europe and even worse in France it can be complicated and very expensive to own an american car unfortunately, so we do with what we have, cheap and easy to find, euro cars
