- Captain Marvel was a huge hit at the box office and most fans seemed to enjoy it. It's not amazing, but it's not bad either. It's a solid MCU film, and as such... it has sins.
Next week: Some animated bullsh*t and some action sins.
Remember, no movie is without sin! Which movie's sins should we expose next?!

Fury in Winter Soldier:”The last time I trusted someone I lost an eye”
Also lost it to a Cat
Michael Sosa Well, the “cat” had already literally eaten three Kree soldiers and an all-powerful cosmic artifact, so you can’t blame Fury for wanting to be cautious around others.
The Mad Titan: I think he was saying that the buildup and mystery of how he lost his eye deserved a much, much better answer. At least I didn’t like the way he lost it
Well he did trust the cat
Jay Yadav Exactly! He was trusting Goose not to swallow and possibly kill him. He doesn’t really know anything about Flerkens.
Garret Buschkamp Also, what were you expecting? A Kree soldier to slice it off with an energy sword?
The annoying thing is that Carol doesn’t have any emotions in this movie, but everyone keeps telling her to stop being emotional.
i agree. I am not sure whether Brie Larson is always acting like that, but for CM they could have casted Kristen Stewart instead and nothing would have changed at all
@@oculusvision558 Brie Larson is a fantastic actress, her character in this movie just felt bad. Like, the writing wasn't good and the actual character build was supposed to be based on emotions of superiority, not like anger or something like that. And she clearly does have a superiority complex (CM not Brie Larson), but I wish they would have mentioned that because it literally took me watching the movie 4 times to understand that her "emotions" were the superiority complex.
@@jaynovak6837 well that bit they got straight out of the comics, cuz Carol's whole personality in the comics is that superiority complex that rarely ever gets her anywhere
Yeah plus there is no development. In all stand alone MCU films the hero has some change.
For thor he became humbled instead of the arrogant prince of asgard
For tony he went through a change where he recognised his humanity
Ant man and captain america sacrificed themselves to save their loved ones. But captain marvel? All she does is punch harder and shoot stronger not character development there. Not even some humility towards the end.
So for quick explanation: Kree are supposed to have no emotion at all because they are made to go in commit genocide and get out with no emotion. Carol in terms of humans does not show much emotion at all, however in terms of Kree has too many emotion, that is why the Kree kept telling her she needs to stop showing it.
they decided to make her a strong character by not giving her any real obstacles or hardships to overcome and that's not even the worst decision they've made
No hardships. She fell from that swing

@@aidanmattys7488 Strong independent black females, thank you verrrrrry much.

Maria was just glad that her sweetheart was back. Marol OTP
Exactly. How he thought that relationship was pulled off well kind of blows my mind. Brie is a good actress as seen from the first half of room but she wasn't given much to work with here. I wanted to see the events those two went through and not through quick flashbacks so I cared about their relationship. Show don't tell. He handled this one with kiddie gloves.

"The last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye."
- Nick Fury, *Captain America: The Winter Soldier*

He probably 'milks' the hidden reason behind losing the eye in a myriad of ways throughout his SHIELD career. After all, he neither confirms nor denies the 'official story' that a Kree burned it out.

Also in Captain America: The Winter Soldier: We see an old photo of Nick Fury, when he was clearly older than he was during this movie, with two healthy eyes.

At the end when she was dragging Yon Rogg to his ship, she was struggling a bit. But we just saw how strong she was. She should have been able to toss him over there if she wanted to.
Marvel has that op problem with Scarlett Witch as well. In the movies she's one of the strongest heroes, but she doesn't even have her chaos magic reality warping abilities. I really think that Endgame would have been better if instead of having time travel be the way that they bring everyone back, they had Scarlett Witch use her reality alteration abilities to make it to where Thanos never got the Infinity Stones in the first place.

The biggest problem I have with Captain Marvel? Both the Kree and the Skrulls were already going _way_ faster than light speed. In order to travel to another solar system, even if you are travelling at the speed of light, it would take you years to get there. Since both the Kree and Skrulls were able to travel to several places across the galaxy during the movie, either light speed is way faster than in the MCU, or the writers just don't understand basic science.
A big problem with this movie is that we learn what Carol has forgotten before she learns and then we see it AGAIN when she learns it.

With a movie as controversial as this, I wanted to go into it as unbiased as possible. I genuinely *tried* to enjoy the film. And the funny thing is, I actually really liked it, but for every reason other than Captain Marvel.
I think the reason behind this is the exposition of her character, or moreover the lack thereof. It felt like the plot didn't develop her character in any way.
A good example of the opposite would be thor. Yes hes overpowered in the first film, but hes also deeply flawed. Next to recieve the throne of asguard he lacks the maturity or wisdom to claim the title of Odin. He consistently mocks his father insinuating Odin to be weak for avoiding war. This line of thinking causes him to be stripped of his power, and he learns humility and modesty living as a human. This equips him better to be a "king", so by the time thor ragnarok comes around and he gains the title, it feels deserved and the viewer receives satisfaction.
Cotrasting with thor, the narritive treats Captain Marvel as a flawless character. Nothing is her fault, she has no bad qualities (from a narritive perspective), the characters always agree with her or value her regardless of her actions. Her "character developlent" comes in the form of her realizing everyone else around her was "holding her back", or "inhibiting" her (i.e. its not my fault its everyone else thats the problem).
This paved the way for a weak exposition, as when she finally receives her "true power" it doesn't feel deserved. Her character is stagnant from beginning to end, learns nothing from the whole ordeal, gains nothing virtuous or bothers to better herself in any way.
She doesn't train her abilities but rather haphazardly monkey bashes through anything in her way. The story lacked any antagonist of equivalency and she literally spent the whole movie blasting a bunch of weak skulls and kree. Why on earth would I be interested in a character like that?
“The last time I trusted someone I lost my eye.”

You missed the sin that, according to the MCU timeline, S.H.I.E.L.D didn't get its name until Iron Man...much later than the events of Captain Marvel.
They were called Shield back with Captain America. They didn't come into light until Iron Man
@@shehulkgolding2206 In Captain America: The First Avenger weren't they the OSA or SSR or something? Definitely not SHIELD yet.

Cinemasins: you can call me SJW, but it was time for Marvel to introduce strong female character
Black Widow: Am I a joke to you?
Why can't I up vote this comment more than once per account?!
And we all know that because he gave this movie any sins means he's alt right
But black widow isn't stronk if she was she would have survived the fall.
@Liam P that's literally the next movie after Far From Home
He wasn't talking about the character, he was talking about the relationship between Carol and Maria
To me the movie tried too hard to make CapMarvel worthy of leading the new MCU. She doesn’t have character or physical ability flaws like all other super hero’s in the MCU to overcome.
-Iron man was an alcoholic then suffered from anxiety
-Thor was an over privileged brat and had to humble himself down
-Steve Rogers could only punch and kick and had to use his heart to get thru
-Bruce suffered w controlling the hulk for his whole time in the mcu
- black widow had to deal with her past
-Hawkeye is fighting an army of robots with a bow and arrow
I mean, why would Miss little perfect be flawed in any way? She has to be a role model for women! Go feminism!
And captain marvel was constantly put down by people and them telling her she isn’t good enough but finally got to prove herslef
I mean, I guess if Thor's main problem was needing to humble himself from a self-perceived godhood, Captain Marvel could undergo a similar arc.
I definitely had similar thoughts about this. Other characters in the other films actually when through character arcs and defining moments. Carol learned next to nothing throughout the course of the film other than the Kree were evil and not the Skrulls. The Skrulls being "refugees" made no sense, either.
@@tilly7689 LOL,when? She was always an overpowered bitch and ends the movie as an even more overpowered bitch. No weakness or development at all.

What about Black Widow?
@@kimnamjoonmeansbusiness9932 She is strong af I don't see a problem.
That's not what he said
Strong was meant as in standing up for yourself. Scarlett Witch is a side character and was never intended to be more. She has strong powers but otherwise isn’t that “strong”. Same goes for Black Widow. As much as I love Black Widow, how often has she done her own thing, not what others told her to do? (I hope that’s gonna change in the future)
I guess Vers blasting the jukebox is Kree for "I don't have to prove anything to you and you can't do jack about it."

This movie discredits Winter Soldier. Remember when Fury was talking about how he lost his eye? Then this movie shows that it was messed up by a cat
They should retcon it, maybe have Fury lost his eye to Wolverine
they should retcon CM entirely
I mean, Fury said himself in the end that he’s gonna keep the cat thing secret
Actually, it's a callback. In CA:WS he said that the last time he trusted someone he lost an eye and prior to the incident he picks Goose up and tells him he trusts him. It's also quite fitting for fury to say something like that considering humans would think Goose is just a cat and not a lethal alien.
wait in the movie nick furys eye is harmed earlier in the movie. when sheild was inflitrated by skrulls or something. thats what fury meant in winter soldier when he said last time i trusted someone
surprised you didn't make a comment about the cat being the reason he lost his eye

Lemme add on my own 5 sins.
1. She was depicted as extremely powerful in the movie so near all of the times she was told she couldn't do something she most likely actually could but let her feelings control her and let herself get messed up, which is probably one of the reasons the guy told her not to let her emotions control her.
2. The fight between her and yon-rogg was so stupid. It was a huge buildup to the big battle between ideologies and with no reasoning beside her being extremely powerful it's over in two seconds, and without any character building.
3. Through the whole movie people are being douches to her but the biggest douche in the whole movie is her.
4. That cat was way too kind the whole way through to just scratch him for no reason out of nowhere, also he didn't drop the cat after it literally took his eye.
5. They made her so powerful in this movie but didn't do anything to fix it in endgame except yeet her entirely, wherein they actually gave multiple challenges to thor to have him overcome and it was a realistic and good way for him to power down for a while.
a giant spaceship explodes, but no one sees it. The pieces fall to the earth, but none arrive. The Skrulls only arrive at the next day.

When a friend was in a theatre seeing captain Marvel, apparently when Brie was told to control her emotions around half way through the movie, someone yelled what emotions? I've never seen her laugh that hard.
She does have emotions, if being "snotty" once in a while counts as emotions. She should have been like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, not... "snotty". Maybe Joss Whedon should've written this movie instead.
Yeah that happened.
Carlos Manrique Nothing ever happens
That’s just what being a woman is like. I disagree with somebody in a relaxed manner and I get told “calm down”. Somebody calls me a bitch and when I say “don’t call me that” I get told “calm down”. I’m angry because somebody rudely interrupted me but I state I’m not done taking I get told “calm down”. Women are constantly told to calm down. Even by other women. Which was why the fact that both Yon-Rogg AND The Supreme Intelligence in the form of Lawson both telling Carol to “calm down/control your emotions” was really important, seeing as it functions for an allegory of real life. Plus, Larson’s acting came off in a sort of dorky way where Carol was just replying sarcastically, and in Carol’s head, you could tell she thought she was the funniest mother fucker ever. Anyway, I guess that still is funny that somebody shouted that in a movie theater. Timing in comedy is key

12:08... come on! A child instinctively knowing how to change the costume colours!? No sin for that doozy!?
Nick Britten I mean... it was just a touchscreen with colors on it?
I feel like if I strapped an Apple Watch on, went back to 95, and then brought up the color palette or wheel and told a child, even one who had never used any technology at all, to pick out a color on the wheel or palette, they wouldn’t have any problem pointing to red, blue, and gold 👌
@@HylerMusic They'd look for buttons. this is the 90's. Touch screens won't be invented for another decade. everything is either a button or dial interface.
Nova Hawk isn’t a color palette essentially an array of buttons? It’s not like a blank screen that needs to be swiped, pinched, or something else.
And I thought Carol used it first when bringing it up... just checked 12:04, she sure does 👌 The kids watching as she shows her what pushing the different ones do.
@@HylerMusic A colour palette isn't an array of buttons. It's a visual display of colour variations. What we see is a hexagon grid with various colours under a touch screen. Being shown how to do something and know how to do something are very different. This kid might know how to switch colours on ms paint but that doesn't mean she knows how to use alien technology in a few minutes. From what we see in the movie the wrist device is advanced technology that can do anything from play video in holograms to long range communication. There's no way the kid wouldn't set off something unintended. Does the wrist thing have pressure touch? does that effect hue or saturation? is there an equivalent to a home button? Does it change based on the user? there's a lot here we can't know but one thing is for sure. Kid using alien tech on the first try deserves a sin. The same way a 1995 computer can upload a virus to an alien computer.
Why would they? They're softballing this movie like everyone else. Three minutes to mention anything at all about how terrible Carol is?
Sadly, Larson will always think any criticism on her performance is due to men being sexist, when in reality, she just sucked at being Captain Marvel.
I personally would have liked Jaime Pressley as the role of Carol Danvers. She rocks the short blonde hair look perfect and has a natural “boss lady” attitude that is Captain Marvel.
