We lived on a Springer for a few years whilst saving for a house. Good luck😂😂😂 Don't leave the marina if you can afford the fees- it's a much harder life without electric hookup and nowhere close to fill the water tank and empty the toilet. It gets old fast being committed to moving every other weekend and then have to somehow get back to collect the car you left behind. Also be very aware the insulation in that boat is negligible. It will not hold the heat when you're at work. If it's below zero outside it will be that temperature in the cabin when you get home. Don't underestimate how much heating fuel you need for the winter. If you've got a wood burner you need a large storage area to stockpile enough. If the hull survey wasn't done by a well known, independent surveyor get your own done to find out what the seller was trying to hide from you. It happens. If a boat that old hasn't had loads of over plating already it'll be due soon. If it hasn't got a current boat safety certificate get a pre survey asap so you know what work it needs to pass and allow you to get it relicensed. If it's been sat unlicensed for years it won't be up to code anymore and any dangerous DIY work by the previous owner won't have been caught and rectified. Springers often came with "unusual" engines... ask an engineer now if parts are actually still available for yours. It's very possible that it's been swapped out by now though. If it's still got one of the single cylinder Ducati's you are screwed 😂😂

I have a 42ft narrowboat. It was a mess when I bought her. I have stripped all the paint off mine and repainted it. Flap discs on the angle grinder. It cost me £300 for the top paint. I bought military vehicle paint. I've done mine camo. It's hard work but so worth it. Yep the compost toilet is the best. I tried the cassette and it's gross. Enjoy being rocked to sleep and welcome to boat life 🎉
Hi Kat just across your vlog. We have a few boaters motor homers and walkers we follow each week. I'm an ex registered nurse and now care for my very disabled husband. We owned a swift kontiki 646 motor home and it was our dream to go travelling more when in retirement. Sadly we,can't now. My hubby is housebound so we watch others, adventurers and at 86 keeps him animated, happy and interested in life. Look forward to watching your life as a new boater with interest and what you do with your cute little boat and what's in store for you in the future. Take care kat. , look forward to your next video. Mary and arthur.
Narrow boat living is great . Away from the rat race of life / people . I recently purchased a 58ft narrow boat which I am starting to live on very very soon in a shropshire marina good luck with your new venture & way of life 👍
I wouldn't worry too much about small patches of surface rust above the waterline like the one you showed but wouldn't cover it either, water will get under the tarp and eventually the gaffer tape & be trapped there possibly causing more damage than if left uncovered if that makes sense. Have her out of the water in Spring to check below the waterline & see where you are with that. Definitely would recommend spending oct-march somewhere with access to mains power & unless you have easy access to lots of free, dry wood and a woodburner get yourself three things: A dessicant type (this is important because they work well at lower temperatures) dehumidifier An electric blanket (pennies to run and make a world of difference) An oil filled radiator (a 1.5kw will be plenty) Your life aboard will then be comfortable through the winter. I've lived on boats for about 15 years now, the above combination works very well. Expect to spend significantly on electricity in Winter but it's far less hassle than dealing with wood or coal (which is also not cheap) on such a small boat and the heat will be a lot more controllable. Haven't seen the boat properly yet but from what you've said if it were me I'd think about keeping the single made up as permanent bed and retain the living area as bench seats with an adjustable/removable table leg fitted on one side. Very best of luck with everything...
True about the steel being covered with plastic. My dad gave me some box section steel 3"x1" and around 2mm thick wrapped and taped up tightly in polythene, and it was sealled up well indeed. After sitting outside for a couple of years, the rust damage was surprisingly bad; same with my sons pushbike under a plastic bicycle tarp. The moisture gets trapped and turns into a small ecosystem with hot and cold temps.
If you get the boat hauled out and contracted for a new coating, first get Ultrasonic Thickness checks done on the hull, get a written report and read it, if you find areas under say 2mm then it may need re-plating so see how much that will cost. If Blacking is to be successful the steel will need abrasive blast cleaning to at least grade 2.5 and make sure they use either steel grit or blast furnace slag as the abrasive medium. The Coating has to be applied as soon as possible but in any case within 4 hours on a bright clear day with minimum humidity, get the Painters to do WFT and DFT checks and make them write these down in a report also make sure that the second coat is applied after the base coat has had a chance to cure. Professionals will prepare a couple of loose steel coupons with the same abrasive blast clean and the same coating, after curing is completed a steel dolly is applied to the coating on the loose steel coupons with Araldite and once the Araldite is cured, the force required to tear the dolly off the steel coupons can be measured, the higher the better ! That's for starters. Done properly the coating will last a lifetime, I saw 3 pack coating applied to structures now located in the North Sea, the Coating applicators were happy to give a 30 year guarantee so if they can do that for steel items in a very aggressive environment, you must be able to get the same or better in fresh water canals !
