This is the theme from series(season) 1, as it features the auction sounds in the background. IMHO that first run of 12 episodes was the best of the stories, but I loved the whole series. McShane was brilliant in it, and they surrounded him with a strong cast and prominent guest stars. :-)
Excellent title sequence - very creative with the old-style musical instruments and auctioneer! Used only for Series 1. Starting with Series 2 in 1991 the producers opted for a more conventional opener- music faster tempo, no auctioneer. It's good too but I enjoyed seeing Series 1 again. Thanks for posting!
Making a forgery, perhaps? Those were a fairly common thing in the series, and making a painting in the title sequence also hints towards that, I think.
I imagine a lot of recovered habitual drug users from the late 80s and 90s thought that the sitcom about a roguish antiques dealer had been a narcotics induced hallucination rather than a commissioned TV show, existing in reality.

CrystallineBlue I agree, Series 1 sounds much better with more focus on the harpsichord.
One of My TV Programmes Ever!!! And The Best First Series Of Anything!
sooo miss this show!
I still remember it from time to time........series of my youth!
In the '90s, part of A&E's Monday Night Mysteries, following "Sherlock Holmes" with Jeremy Brett. Ahh, the tween years.
I'm from India, I really enjoyed this show alot, great storyline and outstanding cast.

Ah Sunday nights!
I CANNOT STOP HUMMING THIS INFERNAL THEME!!! 😂😂
Love knowing that Lovejoy was filmed all over my home county

Is there a name for that painting or is it just a prop?
I'd love to have a print of that pictures, i think it's really nice, if only i knew it's name.
