Was blown away by Mike's performance when it popped up in my notifications. Loved the Livestream you did with him on your channel. No rock star bullshit at all. Just a regular dude, but hella talented. I can't get over all the harmonics he pulls off while tapping the percussion and playing the song. Playing on a whole other level. Loved this. 👍
I've always wanted a Tool unplugged album (still do)... now I want a Tool unplugged tour, with Mike Dawes as an opener and special guest.... This really put me in mind of Tool. So unbelievably good! Can you imagine Mike and Danny playing off each other?
This guy is awesome 👏 I play guitar, so I understand how difficult what he’s doing is! It takes extraordinary talent and thousands of hours of practice to achieve this level of play. Great job Mike!
Mike Dawes is an alien sent here to expand our concept of what is possible with 6 strings and 10 fingers! In my 64 years around the sun, I've had my mind blown a few times...Hendrix, Van Halen, Michael Hedges, Tommy Emmanuel....then along comes Mike...total alien, has to be...the tones/sounds are other worldly. I have to see this alien in person..
Great to watch guys. Many years ago i heard Michael Hedges with "Aerial Boundaries" and i was flabbergasted! Unfortunally he isn't among us anymore but then there is Mike Dawes, Jon Gomm, luca Stricagnoli etc. Its amazing to play like that and i really don't know how to do that ;(. So i listen and enjoy :).
Michael, I just want to say. You do a great job in what you do. I’ve always wanted to do something in guitar video, I am so grateful for your videos. You have opened my eyes to new guitarists I would have never knew. Thank you. Hope you know how much I appreciate your videos.
I think the most important thing to realize about Mike is he is only 32 years old. Guys like him and Joe Robinson are grabbing the baton from Tommy and making something that is their own. In the next 30 years there is nothing stopping him from being the next Tommy Emmanuel. Not only is he a great guitarist, but he has the humble personality and approachability that elevate him above just being a "guitar player". Great reaction video, and a great insight into an amazing player.
I know I'm late to this chat mate, but I saw him live with 25 people on a warm up gig before he went on the Tommy tour..... And he's touring with him again now.... But the lad is a legend, and he is about to embark on a small arts centre tour to give back to what they gave to him and im going again. The bloke is a fucking legend and I feel so lucky to have been in his vicinity!!
Wow. Such talent on both sides of the camera. Michael, your passion for music is so infectious. I have really come to love your channel and am so grateful for this community and some of the new (to me) artists that i've heard here. Artists like Dallas Green, Lisa Hannigan, Travis Meadows, Main Squeeze, man the list goes on and on. I've had a guitar for years and years but never took lessons and fell into the trap of learning some chords and Tabs, but never really understanding what I was doing. I learned how to play a guitar, but not how to play music. Music has always been at the center of my soul. Growing up on bands like Yes, Pink Floyd, Tool, Sublime, Queen, I feel like I hear music well, but I'm ready to make my own sound. You have inspired me to learn, as you say, why I love something. I'm sold, guitar Gate here I come. I'm not even sure if this is the place to suggest reactions, but when you talk about how Mike Dawes has the music within him, I think about Michael Hedges. Incredible creativity, but also a true passion for creating your own unique sound. Heres a video of Micheal Hedges covering While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Its simple, and I love it. This is built on the bridge riff in Tom Sawer by Rush about 1:30 minutes in. Take a listen. Not knocking Mike. He IS the man. ❤ But that’s what hear. Go take a listen.
I don' t know if it is already mentioned here, but in one of his very fine tutorial courses Mike explains his special Instrument ... it is built by the German Luthier Andreas Cuntz. It has a reinforced top as it serves as kind of percussion instrument with an additional scratch pad near the cutaway. This guitar has 4 pickups, I think one piezo an one microfon which can be mixed. The magnetic pickup in the soundhole he uses to overdub some effects like destortion during a loop. As the top of the guitar is thicker he has an additional pickup near the point under his right hand where he imitates kind of snare ... behind the headstock there can be additional banjolike tuners for special effects ... great artist and great teacher
If I remember correctly - It's "DADGAD" capoed forth fret AND THEN the high "E" dropped an additional whole step. There is/was a video out there where he describes this tuning.
I love Mike Dawes and the way you react to him. He’s a unique talent and a gifted player but I’m still waiting for you to react to The Tragically Hip. C’mon man, you said you would. Thanks.
There's an interview with Dawes somewhere where he describes, as a teenager, looking at his guitar lying on a table. It had been glued together following a break after dropping it, and was drying. As he looked at the fretboard he had a kind of epiphany about how all the notes related, that changed his approach to the instrument in a profound way--obviously. He is amazing...and seems really nice, too.
It says so much about you Mike that you are willing to review Mike Dawes. I imagine it's like climbing on a rocket to take a ride; you know where it's going, but you aren't sure you are going be there at the end.
Hey Mike....I don't know if it's still out there, but there was a UA-cam out there where he explains "And Demonstrates" the poly rhythms for this song. Absolutely amazing, and "YES" the title is appropriate....
