Underwater View of High Speed Trolling Wahoo Lures

- In this video we go underwater and take a look at how high speed lures look underwater. Wahoo fishing is a ton of fun and Wahoo are great eating fish. In fact, in Hawaii they are called ono, which means delicious. When specifically targeting Wahoo boats generally troll fast. This offers two advantages. One, you can cover a lot of territory. Two, you generally keep slower fish from hitting your lines so you avoid the so called "trash fish" that take up your time and baits. What we wanted to know was how to lures look when high speed trolling. Can you even see a lure at that speed? To find out we put on our scuba gear and went underwater and had the boat high speed troll above us! We look at a traditional setup with an inline trolling weight as well as how deep lures get when using a high speed planar.

Hmmmmm
That was kewl, glad you guys didn’t get hooked up on yourself
This video has me thinking of how my next Wahoo trolling spreads will be. Thanks 🙏
Person with average-size line:
Wahoo: *SPLISH SPLASH YOUR LINE IS TRASH*
Mamoi diamond 💎 line. Game changer
You did what everyone was wishing to see .... Thank you so much.
Glad it was helpful! If you know anyone else who likes to Wahoo fish we would appreciate it if you share it with them!
Very cool footage. Your channel is the only shows these underwater fish-eye view. Keep up the great work. TY!
Thank you! We’ve been doing a lot of underwater footage lately with our GoFish Cam and it’s really neat seeing how the fish act and what they see
I can't believe someone hasn't thought of doing this before. I reckon you are the inventor of the "troll over!"
Very helpful!
Love it when you are underwater
Thanks, it was really neat seeing these lures from the fish's perspective!
Nice video. It’s a small thing but I never thought to use a hand line reel to store and deploy my shock leader. I love an organized deck so that one is going in the tool kit.
Great underwater footage keep it up man! Awesome to see what this stuff looks like under water. Surprised this channel doesn’t have more subscribers
Thanks Aaron, glad it was helpful! Hopefully our channel will keep growing. If you know any other fisherman who would like our channel we would appreciate if you share it with them!
Very good info, Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Very informative but could you do a video on the whole setup with the rubberband technique and the planner?
That was cool, do an underwater vid of different line and line colors ......
Please tell us more about the planer
Who makes it ?
We are in Fiji so will need to order some from USA or internationally
Wow this explains alot ,I cant wait to try using this planet on the spread thank you for making thi and now I am going to share this lol
Awesome thanks! Let me know how you do!
Awesome video, It is very informative.
Thanks!
Very cool 🤙🏻
Thank you!
Best channel ever!!!!!!!!
Thanks man!
Thanks for that I’ve been wanting to do that for a while, now I know .Excellent thanks a lot planer ordered!
No problem! Hope you catch em' up!
@@ReelHazardous Is the shower curtain ring better than the traditional paper clip/etc?
@@southpaw8040 So far I have been liking it more that double snap swivels but I'll continue to test it. I would imagine any clip would work so long as it can hold up to the pressure of the big lure at high speeds and doesn't get held up on the planar line.
Super interesting. Thanks for posting. Is it possible that you hadn't let enough line out at the reel to let the lure drop tomorrow same depth as planer? Curious because I use the same set up (planer, double snap, rubber band) and always assumed that the snap pushed all the way down to planer.
No I agree with you, I think part of it was I hadn't let enough line back but will mark my line next time to make sure I let it all the way back.
Nice video. Love your stuff. Question for you. Any thoughts on painting your weights white to blend in with the whitewater so as to not draw attention to the weight? I’m wondering what they would actually look like?
Thanks, I appreciate you watching the video! So l had that same thought but then my concern was that white lures are one of my best colors for Wahoo. I usually pull a white over blue lure second closest to the boat so I think the fish can still see it well. Maybe if it is the closest lure the white might help it blend better though. Do you have a lot of fish hitting your weights?
Have you tried the DTX minnows?
what is the difference between the prop wash and the wake splash from your vantage point??
Some of the biggest Ono I get is from running my lures right in the middle of the prop wash, second wake back. Always seems to work. I do you weights as well. Fish can see everything.....I definitely like the video, cool to see.
Thanks! That's cool to hear. How heavy of a weight do you use on that lure right down the middle?
Amazing, thanks for those awesome videos. I am from Panama and we have our wahoo season pretty close in the Pacific Ocean. I would love to deploy a HST planner but does it works at 15knots?. If the answer is a yes. I'll be using it. Thanks again for the video.
No problem! Yeah, we trolled it at 17 to 18 mph and it worked fine. The manufacturer says it can go to 18 mph as well. 15 knots is just over 17 mph so you should be good!
@@ReelHazardous Thanks. I'll deploy the planner soon. Keep doing those great videos.
Excellent Captain, I am very curious how much my new wireline setup is getting below the whitewash as i use it for my short line. The good news is i caught 4 hoos last season on it :)
Deep enough or not it sounds line its working! Good job! How is the wire line rigged?
32 ounce inline with a 40' 400lb shock cord to an Islander type lure with two skirts and a 4 ounce weight inside
Would be interesting to see how some of the trolling plugs get down
Would it be possible to do a video on your actual setup for trolling for us that are new at this type of fishing that would be great thanks for the excellent content mate it’s all ways very helpful cheers from Australia mate 🤙🤙
All the way to Australia, awesome! Yeah, that is something I would like to do. I need to make a few adjustments to our boat and rods before I do the video but I'll probably come out with it in a couple months when it is closer to our season.
Sweet as mate that’s awesome
i'm curious how this works. i's there actually a bait fish in nature that swims 15mph ? or is this more of a kind trick that triggers the fish to attack bait. my question is about trolling in general
Yeah there are bait fish that swim 15 mph. I frequently see baits like flying fish outrun us at this speed. Also small Bonito and mahi can swim that fast pretty easily. Wahoo will bite at all speeds but I think since lures are fake you have to move fast so they look more real. The second big reason to high speed troll is to cover more ground to find the fish.
Hello do you recommend a hook through the eye of the other hook when setting up a 2 hook skirt set up
No I like to rig the hook further back with cable and use heat shrink to make it stiff. I have a video on how I make my rig if that helps.
@@ReelHazardous pls send me the link to that video
Thanks!
Your welcome. thanks for sharing. what make and model hi speed planer is this your using? I want to try it
Thanks for your support! It was a sea striker high speed planar. Model HS8. The only down side is if they get bent slightly they don’t do so well at high speed. I would test pull it before putting lines out. If it’s not straight it can start spinning pretty bad and tangle your lines.
I was in rough seas with my stabilizers lowered and one of them got bent somehow. It was shooting 30 feet out of the water before I could winch it in. I thought about that when you were in the water filming
✔️
audio is heaps better :)
Nomad DTX lures. The best wahoo baits ever made...
Have you guys done any Nomad lures?
No but that would be a cool test! We’ll try to film that one sometime.
🤙
I was waiting for the camera man to get hooked
That might make for a bad day lol
I've caught way more hoo's on my back 2 line and now I see why. They can see them better. I may drop my whole spread back 100ft
How close do you put your close in lures and how big of weight do you use on them? I've done well on close ones as well as further back ones so I was curious how our setups differ. Also, I know one guy who actually puts his tag lines close because they are in clean water and the flatlines further back. That may be an option if it works with your spread.
@@ReelHazardous don't mark my lines like a lot of guys do but approx #1)100'-150' #2)150'-200' etc. Run 4 lines and sometimes a Mr. Big or heavier lure way back without a weight shot gun. 17knts seams to be the best speed for us. 48oz on close 2 36oz back 2
What do you mean floss loop?
It's a loop tied to the main line (made from waxed floss) that we can attached a rubber band to. I have a video coming out on it soon!
Go with 30 mph. The higher the speed the better.
