amazing. completely amazing. so many different genres explored on one take. those drum solos are the perfect example of what a jazz drum solo sounds like
Wow! What a journey! Very spiritual. Thanks for sharing. Not sure if you’d call this free jazz or spiritual jazz but I’m usually pretty timid to enter either of those genres but this is great!
The beginning reminds me strongly of that hymn he played together with Gato Barbieri: "Hamba Khale!" But then.... Two giants of good avantgarde jazz having an exchange. Each in his amazing way. And yes, we should talk of Abdullah Ibrahim; his "civil name" Dollar Brand is colonialists burden.
@@hiltonshone63 Right, he changed it in 1968, nearly 25 years before this album came out. So why is the video called Dollar Brand? His name is right there on the cover. It's a deliberate dig at Abdullah Ibrahim. He changed it when he converted, just like Muhammad Ali changed his name from Cassius Clay. We should use their preferred religious names for both men.
@@henryhuber1050 He had already been well established as Dollar Brand before changing his name, dont think it’s that personal, pretty sure he put dollar brand for sake of relevance , not a personal dig
Would +SecOfunk be prepared to edit the title to replace "Dollar Brand" by Abdullah Ibrahim? The change would be respectful of the artist as a person who had changed his name well before this album.
Wrong! I refer you to this comment: Hilton Shone Wrong! He was born Adolphus Johannes Brand. Dollar was a nickname from his liking for U.S. jazz. He changed his name after converting to Islam
