One of my favourite jazz songs of all time. Whenever my friends ask me why I always tell them that it's like having a conversation with your mates about the best day of your lives. And everyone has their own recollection of what happened that day/event (solos), but at the end of it all, everyone can agree that they all had the best time of their lives.
I used to work in a pub in the late '90s, in Nottingham UK, where live jazz bands performed. One band, a 3, 4 or 5 piece called Mind the Gap (depending on who turned up!), used to play Water from an Ancient Well on a Sunday evening. I don't think anybody knew this song before, I certainly didn't, but every performance left the punters and staff transfixed for the duration. It remains a treasured time. Amazing, beautiful song.
IM A SAX ,GUITAR PLAYER AND THESE MUSICIANS KNOW WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT THEY ARE GOOD I WISH KIDS TODAY CAN PICK IT UP :) becauseWEEEEE NNEEED GOOD MUSIC AGAIN I AM A FAN TO REAL MUSIC !
Clean crisp and well played. I absolutely enjoyed the improvised timing from the piano. An orchestral jazz fantastico. I agree with the saxophone comment. The bassist and the everyone to bring an absolute joy. Thank you.
Beautifu piece! Thanks to Hermann Otto for drawing my attention to this. I'm particularly impressed by the baritone saxophone solo. It can be a difficult instrument to play an interesting solo on. The whole band maintains the slow tempo really well, not always an easy thing to do.
Hell yes! This is amazing. I love Jazz and I have never heard of this guy. Turned on the radio and I heard his song 81st street today and I just had to hear more. So glad I tracked his music down.
Jazz - the greatest music of all time anywhere in the world. Why did this great American music - our gift to the world fade away? We have a philharmonic orchestra in every large American city to preserve ancient, European classical music, why don't we have a jazz philharmonic orchestra in every city also to preserve and promote OUR great American music?
A beautiful dirge of melancholy Negritude of positive primitivism and amicable cordiality! 'Behold the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world' has come to mind with involuntary supplication .
Translation: A beautiful lament of African affirmation and affection! The phrase, "behold the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world", has consequently entered my mind, along with a state of involuntary prayer*. Point 1: Verbosity, verbosity everywhere... Point 2: By referring to the piece as a dirge, or lament (terms that imply sorrowful connotations), renders the word 'melancholy' redundant. Point 3: Using the term 'Negritude' adds unnecessary ambiguity. Are you implying an African dysphoria or affirmation? You have consequently had to include 'positive primitivism and amicable cordiality' as a means of clarification, which could have been avoided if you'd used more understandable language. Additionally you're piling two literary movements on top of each other, both of which contain a wide variety of implications that would give anybody trying to comprehend your statement a headache. Point 4: Involuntary supplication? That makes little to no sense... At best it's confusing. Supplication is to ask to ask for something in a humble way (usually in prayer). God's atonement of sin has caused you to involuntarily and humbly ask for something through prayer? What are you asking for? If you don't like what I have to say, at least take it from Mr. Orwell: (i) Never use a long word where a short one will do. (ii) If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out. Anyway, it's probably time for me to stop procrastinating and actually write an essay.
