Exactly why the stereotypes of snobbery and elitism exist around jazz. Imagine how foolish you'd think someone who said the inverse.
Obviously they get something out of it. Because it's there. And it's not an either/or; there's room for both. Otherwise you're missing out.

This is my favorite version of the track Africa from The Complete Africa/Brass sessions. There are three in total, but this one has Eric Dolphy on flute, bass clarinet and alto sax. Dolphy was involved on the other versions but he didn't play. This version also Booker Little and Art Taylor, replacing Freddie Hubbard and Paul Chambers respectively. Listening to all the versions is a fun exercise, but this one comes out on top. The bass is more pronounced here and I prefer Booker Little's trumpet here, though Hubbard is of course great as well. The orchestration here feels more raw and thicker on this alt version than on the album version.

In this piece, McCoy Tyner used a flat 6 in conjunction with a major 3rd, which created a special sound, along with his usual 4ths, 11ths and other favorite chords.
