Of course, the Blue Devils is what this year was all about.... Amazing drill, Color guard on point, Horns poppin'. But are we not gonna talk about the quads???!!! Come on, man! I miss these years...
@jonasquad if you listen to the original tune by Don Ellis with his jazz orchestra, they did the solo the same as the original. Don had two kit drummers and a few percussionists plus the beginning has some Indian Konokol counting phrases.
I thought the sound of the recordings (i.e. the videos and CDs) were horrible in 1997. I'm not sure if it was the mic placement or what, but all drum lines sounded sloppy, jumbled and echo-y. The bass lines sounded a lot louder than the tenors and snares which made it sound unbalanced. It's a shame because I know there was some amazing playing going on.
Really? you have got to be kidding! Cavies is the squarist drumline, ever...NO FLAMS, or flam drags...the first Corp EVER, to get rid of hard flam passages...their book is deceivingly clever...so easy...just check patterns... for the serious drum corp drummer... ua-cam.com/video/icwK4PWJ-zU/v-deo.html for the first time , start at 4:09, please.
Someone please explain to me Xmen's battery composition. It's out there. Don't get me wrong, I DIG IT. It's unique and inspired. But I could easily see someone make a decent arguement that it's choppy, random, and just plain odd. Like I said though, I totally like it. Their closer was one of the highlights of any show that year, in person anyway.
First year Xmen switched from Mark Thurston to Thom Hannum. If you want to see style and composition similar to Mark Thurston in 1997 check out Dubuque Colts.
@sixty9fordkiller Of course BD and SCV would beat them on the west coast tour, although let's be honest, they were better. That said, I LOVE the Cavies book that year.
I didnt see Cadets, nor Crossmen live that year. But i did see Santa Clara, BD, and Cavies all live. Cavies came out to California that year. Santa Clara and BD just mopped the floor with Cavies at EVERY show. Vangard was at the heels of BD the entire west coast tour and throughout the year through Finals. I know it was early in the year but even then, they had way too much ground to cover and catch up.
The Cadet's Horn section is what I love...
Santa Clara's drill is so clean and fluid, you can't tell me nothin... Yes, sir!!! 😅

I didn't even notice that there were people there, I thought it was the yard line.
1997 BD Drumline is the standard of greatness!!!
The best drumline to ever step on a field
I'm sorry... The Crossmen had some badazz rifles!!!!
97 BD is my favorite line. I heard clips from the judges tape that year and It's just ridiculous how clean that book was.
One of my Favorite Cadets drum-lines ever .... So fun to watch!!
The drumline instructor at my highschool was oneof the snare drummers for the crossmen that year

I was in Florida live that year for the 25th anniversary........ Cadets show was very difficult

Then why does BD sound so dam good? lol
Jeremy Collins I honestly thought BD had the same issue, but, again, I'm guessing it was probably the recording.
Thanks for the memories! I was in the audience for this show.
@soundquality Thanks for the tip. I (obviously) don't know the original, but will now definitely check it out.
Look at all that drill!
Beautiful isn't it.
Note how much CLEARER the hornilines are compared to today's miked corps.
G-Horns are much brighter than Bb Horns
They have used that visual almost every year, it's kinda a signature thing that the tenors do.
I didnt know what you were talking about at first because I thought they were the yard line!!! haha
I know it's on a yard line but at 3:35 that has got to be the straightest line I've ever seen.
I love the Cavaliers show!!
@ VIPER T BARON. No need to call someone at idiot brother. This is a great sport. One can disagree without calling one an idiot.
You know, Crossmen '97 had more notes in the drumline than all the other corps combined.

go to Sadly, you’re not the first person ever, and won’t be the last, to get rid of the ‘s’ in ‘corps’.
It happens. SCV's show was call Fog City Sketches
Was this on a 10 point system or something?
Nah, 20 point. Every drumline sucked
i miss those old school shallow quads...

Yeah If they went back to 90s Blue Devils, I would be very happy.
Been a while since the Blue Devils show actually made sense. I kinda miss that.
@tymmtuba on the notes factor. Get the transcripts before you make that statement. Crossmen was great. Let's be real though.
@thedyarbs I wish Jim Casella was back with SCV
Holy Straight at 3:35 batman.

Cadets going HAM! Hell yeah
