Really enjoyed this guy story. And he’s exactly right about paint contamination. Years ago my company’s assembly-line equipment was being blamed for paint issues at a Big-3 plant in Detroit. We spent weeks chasing the problem. Turned out one of their night shift maintenance guys had a work boot repaired with silicone. Just the tiny bit that boot off-gassed each night was enough to contaminate the area and ruin paint jobs for hours.
@squibbelsmcjohnson If you have a can of WD40 near a body shop, and you walk in with it, they will probably escort you out with a less than pleasant demeanor. You want fisheyes? Have that type of stuff anywhere you're painting.
I worked at Subaru not in paint though but I know the guys that did had certain deodorants soaps and all kinds of shit they couldn’t use and walked through some kind of test daily
silicone is the contaminant in a paint shop and it’s not only on cars. Musical instruments and anything that needs paint adhesion. Paint will just slide right off in a contaminated substrate

@manuelcervantes5866 His name was Ken. We, mainly him, were painting this el camino, and we put on an undercoat of something like 7 layers and before we even applied the first layer of actual paint, we had wet sanded and polished it so clean you could see the birds reflection as they flew by. I watched him throw pin stripes freehand with just a glance at the car. I miss that guy.

Yep i was priming and sanding my scooter parts listening to this, 5 months in a customs shop taught me so much, all waxy products were kept in a totally different building in a locked cupboard
@timforbes6523 We weren't allowed to have the clear coat products and waxy/good looking products in the same building either and I worked at a chemical plant in Massillon Ohio that made a lot of well known products for the auto body business and made the different types, but still the same JB Weld and the reason why is because of the dreaded "Fish Eye" that would screw up a ton of prep and paint work due to those little waxy particles in the paint/clear coat that would leave what looked like a dished out and round "Fish Eye" in the finish, the circles at first reminded me of a peacock feather looking circle/shape into the finish and it WAS BAD! We had our own, separate building/body shop at this plant and I loved being in the body shop and tried to transfer there because there was a guru/expert of a body shop/painter of a guy that was the only worker in the body shop to test all of the new products on actual cars and test batches of old products. This expert told me and the bosses that he would teach me everything he knows if I transferred to the body shop but the big wigs/bosses denied my transfer because I was one of the four "Industrial Maintenance" guys in the entire plant and they needed every guy that knew anything about real maintenance working in the main plant but I did get to help the guru in the body shop on occasion and I LOVED IT! Alas my body shop love would never be answered and I quit that place within 6 months after my transfer denial due to a lot of other bullshit... We made "All Metal" that was expensive as hell but it was putty/bondo with actual metal/titanium in it and when you put a sander or grinder to the All Metal after proper curing time that stuff would throw sparks. We also made a finish coating called "White Ice" that was impossible to keep up with the demand from body shops and suppliers. This plant had so many high paid "Deep Thinkers" in the shot calling process that this place would not keep spare parts for any machine line/operation/product line in the entire plant and if something broke or "Went Out" after the bosses left at 3 PM we would write the parts needed on a piece of paper and put the "Parts Needed" paper on each of the 5 bosses desks in the bigger, office that was actually built on the production floor. The next morning these bosses would see the list of parts/supplies needed and get into a 3 hour argument on which one or two bosses would have to actually get off their ass and makes a parts run One day at about 3:30 PM the production line for the "White Ice" shut down completely. I was new and only there for a week and went to get the line running again. The only apparent problem keeping the White Ice line running and producing was there entire line was dead, there was no "Juice" as in electricity on the line at all I went to the main control room, located the breaker to the problem and noticed immediately that the old and ancient breakers were shot, melted and rattled like a baby top when I removed it and went to get a new breaker I finally found another maintenance guy on the other end of the plant "Smhoozing" with every and all female employee which was about 90% of the employees and quite a few women. I told him the problem and asked him where the stock room/new parts room was located and he laughed in my face and explained the "No parts/supplies" system that this plant ran to keep money in their account instead of keeping money on the shelves I went in and wrote the parts needed on the list. There was a REAL bootlicker that found out what was going on and called one of the bosses while the boss was golfing, this bootlicker boss came in and huddled up with the ass kissing employee that called the boss. This golfing boss was weird and came up to me wearing old fashioned, traditional Scottish golfing attire, well thank God he didn't wear a kilt but his attire made me laugh and that pissed this weird boss off just a tad I explained the parts problem and asked why his boot licking phone caller didn't explain the problem to him over the phone to save the boss a trip? The boss said the problem WAS explained to him but even though there was nothing the boss could do that evening he wanted to make an appearance at the plant to look good for the higher ups Next morning I walked into the production line office to make sure that someone was getting the new breakers and what I walked into was the extremely assholish plant manager reaming the 5 foreman's asses out because the "White Ice" line is the plants biggest money making product and screaming "WHY WAS THE WHITE ICE LINE DOWN FOR 17 hours and counting?" That's when the plant manager turned to me and asked ME that same question with all 5 bosses turning their heads, crossing their arms and pushing the blame on me! So I let all 6 of these guys know that this was the ONLY place that I ever worked that didn't have extra/spare parts for anything in the plant let alone the necessities to keep producing their biggest money making products coming off the production lines. That didn't go over well with them and I didn't care since I was also a machinist and industrial maintenance man and could get a job anywhere within a week's time which is what ended u happening in due time after I got tired of their shit and they got tired of my shit. I was flabbergasted shortly after I started working at this chemical plant early on in my start at this plant when the JB Weld scam/business practice slapped me in the face. Something as small as the JB Weld ordeal really opened my eyes to a lot of the BS pulled by big corporations/medium sized businesses though. I retired a few years ago and spend my time fishing for musky, hunting coyotes and crows or working part time in a rural Ohio country store/drive - thru combo business but am currently off from working the store due to cancer that I was diagnosed with in April 2023

Now I look like a Dr trying to find the cure for zombies when I paint and I still get my lungs wrecked for a month or so. So if there is anything that is going to screw up the paint, I am very displeased because it is not only a hassle and expense to repaint it, it makes me unable to work for weeks at a time as well. Someone brought a can of WD40 to my shop, I don't use the stuff. Then they punctured the can and it sprayed all over the ceiling. I think I will build a new shed just to paint stuff... I can make it a downdraft using the drain in the floor, and maybe I won't get sick. Will have to be after the 72 Cutlass I am doing right now though, I need that thing out of my shop. I need to practice on something, so my 76 C10 is getting the low buck home made version, but without the purple. I am not allowed to use two color names on here, one is the GN shade and the other was on TransAms 69-72 that was not blue. I never saw the hype around Ralph, but he did have some hilarious stand up bits... But man, I got a whole new level of respect for him now. I actually paint cars for a living, and he's right when he talks about dudes that don't care about doing a good job, most people that work on cars now ain't worth a shit when it comes to doing GOOD work..most now are too obsessed with making the dollar per hour instead of making sure the job is done right and keeping clients happy.
My grandpa was a custom car painter and it is a lifestyle I used to couldn’t stand waking up early to start sanding and doing body work removing fender etc. but I miss it now listening to oldies the smell of sanding and spending time with him
If your spraying armor-all in the air before painting a car you're fucking up. It won't do anything if its just in the same room. Been prepping cars with my dad since I was a kid. An old friend of mine is or was an absolute master painter. He'd paint cars for chevrolet and other big companies, he was training me on how to paint his projects. He was SO good at painting he would charge between $8-15k for a paint job and he had people on the calendar for like 3 years out
Who is it?
@manuelcervantes5866 His name was Ken. We, mainly him, were painting this el camino, and we put on an undercoat of something like 7 layers and before we even applied the first layer of actual paint, we had wet sanded and polished it so clean you could see the birds reflection as they flew by. I watched him throw pin stripes freehand with just a glance at the car. I miss that guy.
I told people i wanted to paint cars for a living and i got laughed at. Maybe im gonna do that after all
Reminds me of that guy who does the pin striping for Rolls-Royce ua-cam.com/video/q9yqXPNHyMA/v-deo.html @@claytongross5657

Congrats Ralph! So awesome to see all your success bro!
This is why we love Mexicans ! Look at how excited he is to talk about working . And this dude is young af too props to this hard working comic . I knew I liked this dude he’s cool af 🤙
Learned everything I know about painting from my uncle my dad was more of the mechanical guy. Relate so much to this part of this guys story. Everything he said about painting was spot on
He killed it in his Netflix special!
Ralph plus Theo is the interview. Joe doesn't care about "Regular" stuff and it shows. Not a bad thing but Theo would light up like a tree for Ralph.
He knows what he’s talking about when it comes to painting! 💯
I have a whole new level of respect for Ralph, I liked him before both comedy and personality but now I know I can talk to him about painting or airbrushing as well ❤
So proud of this guy. You see him one day kill it on comedy clip and now he's JRE with a netflix special.
Yep i was priming and sanding my scooter parts listening to this, 5 months in a customs shop taught me so much, all waxy products were kept in a totally different building in a locked cupboard
@timforbes6523
We weren't allowed to have the clear coat products and waxy/good looking products in the same building either and I worked at a chemical plant in Massillon Ohio that made a lot of well known products for the auto body business and made the different types, but still the same JB Weld and the reason why is because of the dreaded "Fish Eye" that would screw up a ton of prep and paint work due to those little waxy particles in the paint/clear coat that would leave what looked like a dished out and round "Fish Eye" in the finish, the circles at first reminded me of a peacock feather looking circle/shape into the finish and it WAS BAD!
The next morning these bosses would see the list of parts/supplies needed and get into a 3 hour argument on which one or two bosses would have to actually get off their ass and makes a parts run
One day at about 3:30 PM the production line for the "White Ice" shut down completely. I was new and only there for a week and went to get the line running again. The only apparent problem keeping the White Ice line running and producing was there entire line was dead, there was no "Juice" as in electricity on the line at all
I went to the main control room, located the breaker to the problem and noticed immediately that the old and ancient breakers were shot, melted and rattled like a baby top when I removed it and went to get a new breaker
I finally found another maintenance guy on the other end of the plant "Smhoozing" with every and all female employee which was about 90% of the employees and quite a few women.
I told him the problem and asked him where the stock room/new parts room was located and he laughed in my face and explained the "No parts/supplies" system that this plant ran to keep money in their account instead of keeping money on the shelves
I went in and wrote the parts needed on the list. There was a REAL bootlicker that found out what was going on and called one of the bosses while the boss was golfing, this bootlicker boss came in and huddled up with the ass kissing employee that called the boss.
This golfing boss was weird and came up to me wearing old fashioned, traditional Scottish golfing attire, well thank God he didn't wear a kilt but his attire made me laugh and that pissed this weird boss off just a tad
I explained the parts problem and asked why his boot licking phone caller didn't explain the problem to him over the phone to save the boss a trip? The boss said the problem WAS explained to him but even though there was nothing the boss could do that evening he wanted to make an appearance at the plant to look good for the higher ups
Next morning I walked into the production line office to make sure that someone was getting the new breakers and what I walked into was the extremely assholish plant manager reaming the 5 foreman's asses out because the "White Ice" line is the plants biggest money making product and screaming "WHY WAS THE WHITE ICE LINE DOWN FOR 17 hours and counting?"
That's when the plant manager turned to me and asked ME that same question with all 5 bosses turning their heads, crossing their arms and pushing the blame on me!
So happy to see Ralph on the pod!!
I love that this dude got on Rogan. Great up and comer.
Hell yeah ralph on JRE! He’s hilarious
My 59 year old a** is crushing hard on Ralph! So funny & charismatic in such a subtle way.
It’s refreshing to hear somebody who had a legit plan B and C if their craft didn’t work out. Usually it’s, “If (blank) didn’t work out, I didn’t know what I was gonna do!”
He use to work as a barber at my cousins shop , he would travel every where prior to do open mikes!! Definitely a funny environment
I just learned of this man today like 30 minutes ago. He’s an amazing young comedian with perfect timing. I’m looking forward to his progression in his career.
Pretty cool listening someone talk about what i do for a living on the JRE
This dude comedian of the year. He's come up so fast.
No, he's not lol
His Netflix special was mediocre at best. Shane Gillis is comedian of the year, by far.
@@radioguy801Shane Gillis i play that boring shit to sleep
they both suck
@@Tarakat7don't be a hater. Both are good
@@Tarakat7 So you’re telling me that Ralph’s long, boring, hypothetical story about riding shotgun in his racer gf’s car kept you awake and laughing? You’re a strange fella.
Ralphy on JRE lets go!!
This young man just moved up a whole other level respect wise. Not only is he one of the best young up-and-comers in comedy, his work eithic and respect towards cars is something he will carry with him his whole life. I pray he won't give up on painting, even though I have a feeling he's gonna be yuge in comedy!
Why would you want him to mess up his lungs?!
Sounds like you have an amazing uncle my man, make sure you are thankful to him every day. In my opinion there is nothing better that your uncle could have done than given you no choice to come help to keep your mind off the Negative
America needs more people like this man. He will succeed at anything.
I'm 57 yrs old and from Hawaii where customizing cars was such a big thing back in the 80's. I even knew what candy paint is lol.
This was educational.. this is worthy of an entire trend.. new genre..
Good change of pace on JRE...
Ralph is Nervous as hell. I’m so happy he’s on Rogan, this dude is hilarious man. Next up Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast let’s GO!!!
I worked in a body shop for most of my adult life. I love hearing about that life. So many regulations and permits in California it’s hard to make good money. I miss it everyday tho.
I like this dude passion for anything he does
was a fan of this kid before he had 10k followers on IG now he's everywhere. Good shit Ralph!
I always listen to these while I’m in the booth. Awesome to hear someone and Ralph of all people respecting the art and craft that is paintwork!! Love it!!!
Side note it’s the silicone in a lot of the products like armor all that react with our paints. The same reason it leaves your fingers feeling slippery (the silica) is the reason it doesn’t let the paint flow and adhere to panels
Do ya want fisheyes? Because thats how ya git fisheyes.
@@SweatyFatGuyohhhhh yeah. Nothing like being in the shop and hearing the painter go. What the fuck! Seen it happen when there was a diesel truck parked by the shop bay door once 😅
@@gregbrown1091 I have hte added bonus of being hyper sensitizes to isocyanate. If it even touches my skin I can't breathe for months. I reused my mask the next day after shooting clear and it jacked me up bad in 2012.
Its getting a HOK candy purple that looks like Grand National paint until the light hits it, then the silver or gold undercoat flashes through it showing the purple. I need to practice on something, so my 76 C10 is getting the low buck home made version, but without the purple. I am not allowed to use two color names on here, one is the GN shade and the other was on TransAms 69-72 that was not blue.
My neighbor a mile east has a nice paint booth I can use if I can get the project down there without covering it in salt on the highway.
@@gregbrown1091we've even had offroad diesel fumes from a skid steer next door ruin a paint job

Joe never disappoints us🎉
Watch the goddamn video first man
My grandpa was a custom car painter and it is a lifestyle I used to couldn’t stand waking up early to start sanding and doing body work removing fender etc. but I miss it now listening to oldies the smell of sanding and spending time with him
I like this guy a lot. He’s funny asl and likeable af I wish him luck
I was just thinking today, this guy needs to be on the JRE
I like this dude, genuine hard working, very funny dude! Cheers Ralph🤙
If your spraying armor-all in the air before painting a car you're fucking up. It won't do anything if its just in the same room. Been prepping cars with my dad since I was a kid. Fucked up a once by getting the oil from my fingers on the body after a final tack wipe down.. my pops caught it immediately and chewed my ass out for it. I was 7yrs old😅
This dude Ralph is so real. His comedy is great and pretty unique but also you just want to be friends with him. I couldn’t care less about painting and yet I watched the whole thing with more attention than I watch a great movie or something. His personality is so refreshing. Also, he is a natural story teller. I am a big fan already
