    My name is Michael Petherick and I live with my family at Chateau de la Basmaignee in north west France.
    My brother and his fiancé bought this building with some inheritance money three years ago and we are slowly restoring it to live in, and run as a business.
    It’s always a financial struggle to keep the place going and we have to work hard to keep our heads above water, but we love it and wouldn’t have It any other way.
    When they knew that they were buying the château, my brother asked me if I would like to move over and take part in their new adventure... so I packed my bags, gave up my life in England and moved here to help bring this place back to life.
    We do all the renovations ourselves including construction, decorating and collecting antique furniture that we buy cheaply to restore. Our goal is to fill the château with beauty and life as it once was.
    I have a passion for history, art and all things old.
    These videos are a series of stories about my life and experiences living in a French castle
    I’ll be showing all aspects of life here, from renovation and DIY, to crafts and baking, art, daily life and a bit of fun thrown in for good measure. There’s much more to see and our journey is still just beginning.

      Loved the plans so interesting - I have similar the original plans to my house from 1904 not so many as the chateau obviously but a great thing to have I’ve often thought of framing mine ! ...... as a fellow aga Rayburn fan your cottage will be roasting once it’s in full flight but a tip remember what you put in the warming oven lol ! One Xmas we had a horrid smell for weeks and couldn’t find out where it was coming from till next time we used the Rayburn warming oven and hubby had left a bowl of sprouts in there and forgotten phew !😅

    Hints from experience. Have the plans digitized ASAP. Make sure when you touch the old paper you wear cotton museum gloves. I know you don’t se damage, but every tiny bit of oil, soap residue, lotion, hair products transfers to the paper every-time you touch the paper. Nothing will happen now, but in years to come, even a small amount can be catastrophic. If that’s not practical consider washing and drying your hands immediately before touching the paper. If you haven’t already (it looks is like you may already have) get slip sheets of acid free paper. Good luck, those are priceless. Thank you for the lovely show.

    such a treasure trove of original drawings of the chateau! as an architect, designer and draftsman with over 40 years of experience i can attest how raw those fragile documents can be. if you can you should get them digitized for future reference, then they could be cataloged, organized and reproduced as necessary. if you frame any of them make sure it's with acid free matting and uv protecting glass to help prevent further deterioration/fading.

    Those plans were REALLY interesting and as you say, should be kept somewhere safe after copies have been taken - perhaps you could get a safety deposit box at the bank? Then if e.g. a fire occurred, a copy would be at another place and available for rebuilding works.
    Good that at long last the cottage is progressing.
    Your poor dad meantime, is trying to do their cottage up too!

  • @GrammyAllen

    They look like they had all been folded small enough that you could get a box that is made to look like a book and paint that box to look like an old book with "Chateau de la Basmaignee" printed on the "spine" then put all the drawings in it and keep it with the books. That'd keep it dry and in the dark and easily accessible if someone wanted or needed to look at them.

    Michael -- I would consider using a less expensive, painted wood for the cottage panelling. Your theme for this gardener's cottage comes from Beatrix Potter's Lake District circa 1900, one of rural simplicity -- I would not use the mixed-parentage, Edwardian high style Chateau as a reference.

    • @taitweigel64
      @taitweigel64 4 роки тому +7

      It seems the wood is overly thick for the kitchen walls. When insulated, vapor barrier, wood framing for the walls, it's going to lose quite a bit of space. I've done a place with cedar boards, smooth side exposed and painted. It held up beautifully.

    Good on you for trying, Michael. It's so disenchanting that when people put things away, they don't organize them. Yet clearly, they didn't intend to trash them or they wouldn't still be on the property. We form "what if" and "just in case" piles, but when the time comes, things are such a mess, we hardly know what we have. That said, Michael you have done such a lovely job going through the salvaged bits. We can only expect you to endure so much sanding and polishing, when you just want to get the cottage completed and have a bit of grown up privacy and the charm of a Beatrix Potter rabbit hole. (I'm sure in due course, everything will find a proper home).

I can't possibly remember where I put things, even though at the time I'm absolutely certain I'll remember! And used different coloured duck tape to seal/label boxes, eg anything for the aga have blue tape, any lighting pink tape etc then you only have to go through the right coloured box rather than all the boxes!

    Nothing beats shopping in the shed of a collector with a good eye. Those old pub lights are perfect. When you mentioned the interior architectural vandalism of old pubs it hit like a horrible blow. It's sacrilege and literally stupid as it devalues, nothing worse than going into a lovely old pub that's been "modernised".

    Get with a person who specializes in preserving and stabilizing paper. Then store in archival boxes.
    Mostly get scans of the plans and work off of them.

    Shot blast wood??? Why would you do that? Old wood is through the aging process no longer interesting to wood destroying insects, but if you take off 1 or 2cm this changes! You will have to chemically protect the wood again. Couldn't you just gentelly clean the beams?

    My neighbor, who in now deceased, taught me a lot about oak. My electrician drilled through my hall floors several times. My neighbor who would be 108 if still alive, told me to cut a green branch about the same size off my live oak tree. Strip bark off, and hammer in like a peg, with glue. It will swell while drying. Then sand and seal. My electrician was so apologetic, and appreciative to know the repair was that easy. Honestly, I can't locate the repairs now. Watching videos of epoxy table, made from slabs of walnut with epoxy filling in major gaps, I bought West System epoxy resin 105 and hardener 206, mixed with Mohawk powder stain light walnut, which matches my flooring color. My floors are 1909. I have to buy historic wood at $2 per foot to get correct size long leaf pine. Instead of paying for the expensive replacement wood, which I have done, at great effort to find historic wood, then I find I am only to be disappointed with poor results. The historic wood was in poor shape, and worker not skilled enough to install properly. The epoxy solution dries over night, and blends in fairly well. It is visually pleasing. I plan on trying Rubio Monocoat seal, next floor I redo.

      Definitely not the same. But I guess we couldnt build stuff like this castle now anyway. It would be optimised down to a quarter of the materials and a tenth of the design life :( It's horses of courses. Now we build far more complex structures. CAD is very valuable. It makes inventory, quantity and allsorts so much easier. The 3D stuff we can do is in another league!

    • @Curiosity-NZ
      @Curiosity-NZ 4 роки тому +4

      @@browpetj : My best suggestion is to hunt out old established auction houses on-line, you can pick up some very good but well respected draughting equipment that way. Some of my pens and pencils plus drawing aids go back to the mid to late 1800's. I have a full set of ships curves and other items used in the days of laying the lines. I still use a full size draughting table from the early 1900's which was used in a shipyard. I still use these. I also have several different slide rules which I also use. By the way I'm in my 60's.

    In old homes in the US the interior shutters fold back into the window recesses and mate up with the wall paneling. If you don't know they are there, then you would never notice them. Is it possible that is what you have in some of the rooms of the chateaux that are paneled

      Yes, and acid free interleaves and storage box. That vellum itself degrades rapidly so mitigating it as best as possible will prolong their lifespans.

    • @joannecordelia

      No matter. The oils will eventually deteriorate the paper, so 200 years from now the inks may not show up, etc. The chateaus themselves deteriorate very quickly. Be sure the paper will deteriorate too. Just be careful with them.
