  • Playing Skyrim with a VR headset feels like a dream that many of us had while playing through the game over a decade ago. When that dream became a possibility, many were left a little dismayed due to a slew of problems. A few years have passed and the modding community has been BUSY. Modding The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR is sometimes referred to as the ultimate VR experience. Having never tried out Skyrim VR with or without mods, I thought I might dip my toe in and see what all the fuss is about.
What follows is me checking out Skyrim with my Valve Index headset, firstly with absolutely no mods installed, and then with FUS RO DAH through Wabbajack.

One thing i find amazing about skyrim VR, even in its vanilla state, is how they turned a non-vr game into a vr one. I kind of hope they do the same for TES6 but from launch. Considering it runs on the same engine. It also gives me hope for the future of VR. More companies should be doing that. Especially in the RPG, FPS space. That would flood the vr market with some high quality shit.

Absolutely! Just as an aside: there is constantly new stuff popping up in the flatscreen to VR space and it's really exciting to see a whole community working to add new layers of VR experience to games that were previously just flat. It's a great time to have a VR headset!

Thank you for the comparison, it hits the nail for me. I played Skyrim VR once on PSVR1 and quit, after years I tried now the PCVR version directly with Skyrim VR Minimalistic Overhaul and 233 active mods (standard setting) and what should I say? It was an overwhelming VRish experience. Suddenly, the natural interaction was there, the melee combat felt soooo much better! The graphics popped, dungeons, outdoor are so good now. I also like the challenge of melee combat very much now. Yes, I just repeat what you already say in the video, fantastic VR game with mods. Hopefully, the day is near when games like Skyrim are natively developed for VR.. but until then we still have Skyrim and wabbajack :)

Maybe blade and sorcery parrying/attacking elements, but also if NPCs were more interactive would help a lot. high interactivity would drive VR open world through the roof.

For those folks looking for a solid set of mods (and for you, too, Remis!), I highly recommend this one from the Nexus - "VR Edition - The 11 Years Of Skyrim Ultimate Graphics Mod Pack". it's a wabbajack profile that you can run after the vanilla install of Skyrim VR, and it is the most realistic looking mod of Skyrim I've seen. Unbelievable detail. The one Remis has here looks nice, but frankly pales by comparison. Trees, rocks, and people all look almost photo real. It combines 300 mods into one installation. There's also a video that will walk you through the setup.

I tries this mod list and while what you are saying is true, it has a lot of problems too. I have a 3090 and the performance was horrible especially outside. Also, the FUS mod list seems much more refined while the 11 years one has a lot of bugs that sometimes break the immersion. I have been moving Skyrim VR for years and the FUS mod list is by far my favorite one.

I've always put it off because of too much manual configuration. But with wabbajack it is now really feasible and it is definitely worth it to experience the world of Skyrim with mods! Without a premium account on Nexus, it's still a clickeridoo for downloading every mod, but no more in-depth manual configuration is needed.

I first played Skyrim VR on an Oculus Go using an x-box controller. Can't remember if I had mods right away, but it was before SKSE worked with VR.
Was still utterly blown away by it - I especially remember the first time entering Bleak Falls Barrow and feeling the scale of it as I looked around from the door of the very first room.
At that point, it might have actually been better that I was playing in such a limited way - watching the un-modded hands, etc in your video I think by having the headset to look around but the still the familiar gameplay of flatrim I got the best of both worlds at the time.

I definitely recommend reading about the mods before playing the modlist otherwise you'll miss a lot and understand even less. Just from FUS in this video, weapon holsters from VRIK and spell glyphs from MageVR were missed which make equipping weapons and spells more immersive than using the spell wheel. I'm still in the process of setting mine up. It's a lot of work and sadly not getting the performance this video shows 😢.

Ive had Skyrim since weekend of release, playing on my PS3 it actually caused my PS3 to YLOD and burn out. I then bought the remaster on PS4 and got the PSVR headset for Skyrim VR. I will say, I was underwhelmed with it but i loved the world so much i kept with it for a few months. I then finally saw the light and got a gaming PC and Quest 2 I will never look back ( it is expensive but well worth it). It then got even better with mods! I was running about 200 ish mods and the game looked fantastic. I am now using the Wabbajack modlists and it just keeps getting better. One big thing i will say about the vanilla PCVR game is that once you have 4k modded textures it looks soooo much better, even with dynamic resolution off on the vanilla game the clarity is not great.... with mods it really increased the clarity a lot! And the detail in the distance is much improved! It really makes all the difference and increases immersion to that next level, you would think you have spent a load of extra money to make the game look better, but its all free BUT! support nexus mods guys, its worth it and pays the creators and website back a bit. Plus you dont have to keep clicking the download button for every damn mod! Skyrim VR is about 14.5GB the mods i have are about 45GB and counting so you do the math, they do deserve a bit of cash for all this effort to make the game look this good!

I mean thats definitely an option, but you still need to setup a vortex profile for skyrim vr, go to each of those nexus pages individually, download through vortex and get going. So I bought a VR headset a couple weeks ago. The HP Reverb.
And the first thing I noticed was there's no peripheral vision in these headsets.
You're better off buying 3 monitors and set them up around you.
It's much better than buying a device that makes you feel like you're looking through a diving mask.
That's the biggest drawback to present day VR.
BUT it would probably be great in an underwater game.

    • @westingtyler2
      @westingtyler2 9 місяців тому

yeah FOV is one of the big areas i hope the headsets are trying to improve over time. there are some fancy techniques that will reduce the processing load of having a big fov, like foveated rendering, that has most detail where you are currently looking, and tracks your eyes. for me FOV is the big one. and general headset weight and balance. if they can nail those, it'll be great. also check out Norm on Tested checking out all of Meta's prototypes. they have like 5 giantly expensive prototypes ten years ahead of their time, each doing a single aspect (FOV, lighting, foveated rendering, dynamic focus, pixel resolution/density) super well, and they say the next ten years of vr tech development is just finding a way to pack all of those tech into a single affordable headset, but that it'll take the next ten years to figure it out. here's the 1 hour vid:

    • @MrMarcusIndia
      @MrMarcusIndia 3 місяці тому

These videos always lie - but it's not the UA-camr's fault. The screen capture is nearly always from the mirrored footage on the monitor, which gives much clearer images than the VR headset. Only a handful of channels show "through the lens" footage because it's really difficult to capture and would be virtually impossible for videos like this one.
I was always disappointed with how my Quest 2 experience was compared to what I saw on UA-cam. Not just for Skyrim but all games (HL:Alyx was excellent for some reason, possibly because it was specifically developed for VR, unlike Skyrim).
That said, the Quest 3 has pancake lenses which significantly improves the visuals. I've only just got my headset but so far the experience and visual quality is a big improvement.

skyrim absolutely NEEDS VRIK, HIGGS and PLANCK those three mods alone make the game the best VR experience i've had.
everything else is just icing (like Dragonborn Speaks Naturally, which boosts your immersion tenfold!)
its so bad that Bethesda didn't even give us a complete body and hand physics...i'm glad they make VR ports of their games,
but they should atleast finish making them!!! i consider VRIK HIGGS and PLANCK to bring skyrim to a finished VR state.
i feel like Bethesda owe prog (VRIK creator) and flyingparticle (HIGGS and PLANCK) a big fat paycheck,
since they transformed an "ok" VR game in to one which i've recommended to all of my friends with VR headsets.
i hope if/when a Starfield VR comes along bethesda reach out to these two with a hand full of cash and bring them on board
so that we can get an actually complete VR game from Bethesda on release! (Fallout VR didn't even give you floating hands!!)

The other thing is that FUS is a project that is constantly being added to, so it is possible that the size has grown since the time of publishing this video. Best bet is to join their discord and get up to date info on whats included in the modpack, and troubleshooting.

You need enough space to download it *and* then install it. Therefore the download maybe 50Gb but the installation itself may require another 100Gb.
You can delete the downloaded files afterwards if you like, but I recommend keeping them until you've tested your set up and are happy with it first. That way you can reinstall the Wabbajack list entirey very quickly without having to do massive downloads again.
I haven't used FUS so I don't know how big it is but this could be the problem. Many of the Wabbajack mod lists require 300Gb or more!

ok, i just got skyrim vr today, since we just bought an index.. and what should i say. index runs at 120hz and the game intro glitches like hell and the cart and the horse are flying all over the place. sersly, you cant even set the index to 60hz in order to be in line with bethesda stupid 60fps physics rule. i thought this was fixed for vr but nooo

@@RemisVancosid not as much as i want. iam strongly nearsighted and cant wear contacts, so glasses are the only option for vr right now. i was carefull, used full eye relief on the gasket and pushed the glasses as close to my eyes as possible, yet after 4 times using it, it already scratched the lenses, because they always collide. ordered prescription insert, but iam pretty sure, due to the size of the glass needed and my strong values, that they will be thick as a finger. seen reports of people ordering -9 lenses and even on full eye relief setting, they still have eyelash collision due to the thickness. so its a pick your poisen scenario. vr isnt made for nearsighted people and the solutions to help with that, are desined and work best for mild or medium values. sucks to be me

    "skyrim VR was absolutely terrible"
I mean it's an elderscrolls game. Did those people not play it non-VR on release? Bugs out the wazzoo. It took patches to get it "stable" and I use that term lightly there's still plenty of gremlins in that code and mods have always been necessary to elevate the gameplay, graphics and fix problems.
