You know that mower makers are not far from making the complete mower deck out of plastic right? Would not surprise me that at the same time the blade of that same type come with it. I would say less than five years before that happens.
I told my wife she needed to watch. She said not until he takes that silly disguise off. Then she added I'm not going to watch somebody repair lawn mowers. If our lawn mower breaks I'm not going to fix it you are she told me. 😂
I just bought the grass buster scraper from you during the Father's Day sale. My Cub Cadet 50" deck was plugged really bad from mowing wet grass. Had no choice but to mow it because it was getting really deep. That scraper is, by far, the best scraper I've ever used on a mower deck. I highly recommend it to everyone.
I have heard a lot of stupid stuff on sharpening blades. My brother in law, said that your not suppose to sharpen them to a sharp edge. He said you're suppose to have a blunt edge so the edge doesn't fold over when you hit a stick. I sharpen them to a sharp edge and the cut way better than he's blunt edge. Love all your video's!!!!
Yeah-but, if they're razor sharp, the blades dull in very short order, so that means you're sharpening your blade A LOT. No lawnmower blade is blunt, like the side of a 2x4, they all have a bevel and that's really all you need. The only mower type that really "cuts" the grass and needs to be razor sharp are the reel type as they do indeed scissor-cut the grass. Rotary lawn mowers are glorified weed wackers.
If it's "too" sharp anything you hit, twigs, stones, plastic Army men, can chip the blade, which is never a good thing. So, sharp but not like a knife.
I have almost the same exact mower but with a 190cc flat head briggs. It says Snapper but I believe it's made by MTD. I freakin love it. It was manufactured in 2012 and I bought it in 2013. It's truly the best mower I've ever had. I love the mower so much I bought a replacement deck for it. The original deck is starting to deteriorate. Its already been welded once but its still solid for now. When it's done I'll swap the deck out with the new one.
I worked on small engine equipment for 30plus years on the side. Not a certified mechanic like you Taryl, but I know exactly what you are saying. Deceiving exactly. Been that way for years now. But really bad now. Have a good one Taryl!
Man, the flashes of Elkskins face getting closer and closer yelling “Fire it up! Fire it up!” absolutely kill me 😂😂 It’s like being inside Taryl’s head and hearing the voices that haunt him! I think showing folks how to do a Husqvarna AWD belt (and the stupid idler pulleys) would be a great idea. Talk about a drive design that gets full of clippings and debris, they almost need to be cleaned out after every use if you’re not using the bag!
Similar problems with the blade stop on my Toro. Fortunately, it was just packed with grass, cleaned it up, and there's your dinner. Great video, thanks
Update: ((optional add on) Toro part number 144-6377 traction assist handle kit) does fit all new Toro mowers that have the new baby carriage curved shape. IMO you could make your own Toro's BTAH (Black Traction Assist Handle) from 2 pieces of wood in ((L) shape) and some bolts and washers. Toro's BTAH converts Toro's PPM (Personal Pace Mowers) (which requires a person to push Toro's heavy mower forward before the self-propelled drive kicks in) to ((easily without effort) controlling Toro's self-propelled drive with just your fingers and hands without moving forward). This is needed on steep hills where you need the Toro mower to pull you and this powerful mower up the hill without any effort on your part. The powerful Toro mower can do this only with BTAH and not by Toro's PPM (extra exercise mode). Without BTAH you end up pushing this heavy Toro mower up the hill. Thank you for your help and understanding on this Toro (back breaking) mower issue.
I have and use one of those antique craftsman blower/leaf vacuum. It gets heavy after a while without the shoulder strap. Love the videos and the skits. Keep em coming.
The old snappers with the friction wheel drive were the best . everything was right there in plain sight to repair ' sometimes you just had to lube the shaft to make it slide good lol
Taryl, my man! As soon as you said, that “Snapper” was not really a Snapper, I looked at the mower closely and I have run into this before. That baby is an MTD. I’m not knocking MTD. I used to dislike them to a point but now I find that they are easy to work on and they are homeowner brands so they’re not made to last forever without breaking down.
I dont have a self propelled mower, but i found this video interesting and informative. Also, thats a cool idea of putting a metal plate on a forklift so you can have an adjustable work surface. I bet its a good back saver.
Hi, In my shop, for that procedure, with the mower on the lift, I rotate the handle down to the ground. That exposes the underside of the deck without any fluid leaks.
Thanks Taryl. I have a 2016 TroyBilt/MTD that looks the same. I couldn't figure out how to remove the drive cover after I mowed today. I haven't cleaned under the cover since I bought it.
i still love my old craftsman garden tractor not a lawn tractor it has bolts that hold wheels on 22 horse briggs made in early 2001 its been a beast 43 inch deck had to replace electric cluth once and belts a few times but it still runs like a new car craftsman motor only funky thing with mine is to replace drive belt uou have to twist it or it wont work i think taryl talked about it in another video that drove me crazy one day!4 hours to figure it out lol
What I want to know is when do I get my grass rats garage small engine repair degree I think I watched long enough to deserve one😂😅🤣❤ thanks guys love the show
Its not suprising anymore the stuff they are assembling to keep purchase cost down, and the big companies are selling more whole goods cause home owners are getting flustered trying to get this stuff fixed, thumbs up, great video
Hi Taryl, awesome videos. I think i have watched almost all of them, but i just did the same exact repair on a troy bilt, and I noticed the one you did was missing the axle clips to hold it secure in the plastic mounting assembly. this may be the reason the belt came off. people bang the mower up and down sometimes to get grass out from under the mower and this probably breaks the clips off and the axle gets loose, and the belt comes off. just thought you might like to know.
After cleaning out old grass or before using a brand new machine, spray the underside of the deck with two coats of rubberized undercoating. Cheap insurance to seeing 10 years beyond the 15years approximately for a lawn mowers life. Moist damp grass is acidic and will cause the deck steel to start to rot. This tip is worth couple Taryl stickers 😊🇨🇦
I sold mowers for Lowe's in 1988 and then I thought MTD had the best, most logically made lawn tractors. The biggest problem I had was shoulder bolts falling off, and those had to be ordered and they didn't charge the batteries, and would go dead on customers.
First of all yes I wanna see that video taryl. Second I love those sour cream and onion Pringles you got for snacks. Best snack ever. Third the real deception is battery powered mowers with their quote "no maintenance" Keep the good videos coming. When I'm bored I love to watch these.
To clarify, (first i am a dealer for over 20 brands of equipment) Husqvarna does not own AYP, AYP is the thing of the past, Husqvarna since 2006 is Husqvarna Outdoor Products (HOP) the factories that made Sears Craftsman, Poulan & Husqvarma have changed names many of times over the years but as of 2006 it's Husqvarna Outdoor Products, started out as Roper, then American Yard Products, then Frigidaire Home Products, Electrolux Home Products and then in 2006 to what it is now due to a spin off, Husqvarna Outdoor Products, also parts are MUCH cheaper is you go through a local dealer or repair shop (you don't pay shipping!) and always support local businesses, i own a shop and my prices are 40-50% less the cost of online places.
Agreed, there has been a lot of flip flop buy outs, I got a call at my shop from the Generac Corp wanting to send me a customer with a dead DR mower to get Briggs and Stratton warranty work,a real mis mash of names on one machine
With John Deere I have found that the local dealer can use JD’s parts lookup to find discontinued or out of stock parts at other dealers nationwide. My local dealer’s parts department doesn’t want to get involved in the actual purchase and shipping but I have found that when I call an out of state dealer they are willing to pack up and ship the part to me. I have definitely found Taryl’s advice about using independent parts warehouses valuable in cases where JD will only sell subassemblies or kits (example: gasket kit for a Kawasaki motor) while you can but the individual gaskets in Kawa factory bags online. I’m a lawn tractor collector who does his own repairs/restorations. I’d guess that the average person just brings a riding tractor or zero turn in and just says “fix it”. I doubt that any of them ever heard of Taryl or Donyboy or Chickanic anyway.

It's only oil cost that keeps that tech held back but that's about to change when fuel cost drop below one dollar a gallon. In the very near future.
