Starving to Death: I can't eat & My feeding tube causes pain!

  • Since 2010, I have had significant issues with my pancreas. I have had minor procedures done to open up my bile ducts, place stents and sphincters cut. I have been prescribed pancreatic enzymes to help breakdown the food I eat. These have been stop gap measures to try to keep my pancreas functioning. In 2010, I had a feeding tube placed. It was a disaster. In 2011, my tube feedings were stopped and I ended up on IV nutrition called TPN. Over time, I was able to again eat by mouth and TPN was discontinued. I struggled to eat. I had a feeding tube again in 2017. It did not go well. I went back on TPN for a short while in 2018. I had more procedures done on my pancreas and I once again regained the ability to eat by mouth. #GodisMyStrength #StarvingtoDeath #INeedAMiracle
In February of 2020, my pancreas started acting up more and more. I started cutting out various foods. By November, all food including fruits and vegetables began aggravating my pancreas. I had to wait until December to see my GI doctor. He suggested getting a feeding tube placed into my intestines. This would hopefully rest my pancreas and allow me to get nutrition via the feeding tube. I was leery about this treatment option because previous feeding tubes have failed…but if this is what the doctor wanted and if this is what my doctor who is an expert on the pancreas recommended, I would comply.
Several weeks ago, I had the feeding tube placed. The surgery upset my GI tract and made my pancreas angry. After the surgery, I had a pancreatitis attack when I tried to drink water. The feeding tube was tried on a very slow setting, but within an hour, my pancreas was roaring in pain and spasming. The feeding tube was trialled four times. Infusing at just 10 milliliters per hour caused severe pain. The tube feedings were stopped.
Since having the surgery, I can no longer tolerate eating solid food. Everything must be processed in a blender and made into a puree. However, even pureed food causes my abdomen to swell, my intestines to spasm and my pancreas to erupt in pain. My GI tract seems to be in worse shape than what it is was before getting the feeding tube.
I want to be angry. I want to be upset. But I know God is using this situation to teach me lessons and show me things I need to understand. One of the biggest lessons I have learned is that my body cannot undergo surgery.
In 2020, I had a port-a-cath placed. That was a brutal procedure and did not go well. I ended having the port removed. It took about five months to recover. In 2017, I got my tracheotomy tube. That was an extremely easy procedure and took about a week to recover. Then, my next surgery was in 2014 when I had my intestines repaired from having a feeding tube. The surgery was a piece of cake and took several weeks to recover. And going back farther and farther, procedures and surgeries were fairly easy, and I recovered relatively quickly. Now my body is older; it takes more time for my wounds to heal, It takes more energy to overcome hurdles, obstacles and health setbacks. Even small procedures take a tremendous toll on my body.
Recently, I had an appointment with a GI doctor. He did not seem to understand the severity of my inability to eat and the pain I develop when I use my feeding tube. The appointment ended with the doctor wanting to get a MRI of my pancreas and liver. I was crushed. I thought the doctor would recognize the urgency of my need to get nutrition. I imagined he would tell me I needed TPN. I imagined he would be shocked that I had lost 5 pounds in two weeks. I thought he would have some concern and empathy toward my rapid decline in health. But instead, the only thing the doctor wanted was a test…a test which would take several weeks to set up. Then it would be many more weeks for a follow-up appointment. I was concerned. How long could I last in this state.
A few days have passed. I am having severe shortness of breath. I can barely move and then I gasp for air. I feel so weak. I feel as though I am going to fall over. My chest aches and my heart hurts. I am startled by my rapid decline. My body is working hard to keep me alive, but my lack of nutrition is quickly depleting my body of essential energy.

Bless your heart. I too have so many stomach gastric problems & have TPN for six months. Off now but troubles are back. It's extremely hard finding a good gastro doctor. I've finally got one but like you it takes so much time to schedule procedures. I'm waiting on an EDG to be done 11/9/21 I am so nauseous all the time with 3 medications for nausea. I take Donnatal 3-4 times a day for the extreme stomach pain. Nobody really understands. I'm a Christian too but constantly struggle with faith for healing. I will pray for you & hope to see more post by you to keep informed. God bless you my sister warrior.

@@GodisMyStrength Im just curious as to why you don’t have your pancreas removed altogether? I know it can be done in certain circumstances.. Is that something you would consider? I had severe pancreatitis when I was young and it went undiagnosed for years until I finally had an ercp and they found large amounts of stones in my gallbladder and bile ducts!! I was only 13 I ate healthy and was slim That’s why it went undiagnosed! I will never forget that horrible pain and I pray that you don’t experience it but it’s just awful! I honestly wanted to die because I felt I wasn’t being heard by the doctors until I was blessed with one who finally took me seriously and did the necessary investigations! I had a few good years then started developing the pain again and had another ERCP and stones had formed in my ducts again so they were removed and I’ve been good ever since! You are such an inspiration and you have a beautiful aura! God Bless and take care of yourself!!!

@Mavis Brmr Thank you so much for sharing your story. I am sorry you have been through so much.
A surgeon talked to me about the procedure. He said I am not a candidate. I have too many medical conditions. I probably would not survive the surgery...and if I survived the surgery, I probably would not survive the recovery process. The surgery is taxing on the body, and the recovery time is long for "healthy" people. The doctor thought the surgery would be far too much stress on my body, and it would be a complete disaster.

What is your name as I like it so I can pray for you by name and to know you by I'm on TPN too. I need it so my small intestine can hopefully heal.
I met the woman who cleans a certain section in hospital and she was so very upset cuz last minute her fiancé had been shipped off to Japan and they weren't going to see each other for a whole year. She had barely slept in me to work and she was practically in tears telling me about it. I told her that it was going to be OK to trust in God and that I would pray for her . I prefer her for a couple minutes a little later that day. Today she came her boyfriend was sent back because it was a mistake and he's being sent to Jacksonville instead which is what they were hoping for!!! Now I can't say that things got back to normal slowly because I have prayed for her but it's really nice to see the results even if it wasn't because of me.... on the other hand what if it helped!!?So with those sites in mind I'm going to pray for you and I hope that God heals you from head to toe and or gives you the strength to deal with every situation put in front of you like I know he will and like I know he has thus far!!! God bless. I'm home now... i'm going to do my TPN in the daytime because I don't like how it wakes me up so often to use the bathroom!! If you need anything let me know!!!

is it no option to have the feeding tube and have painkillers for the pain so you can still have food but dont feel the pain?

    • @GodisMyStrength
      @GodisMyStrength  2 роки тому +1

Hello. Pancreatitis associated pain is extremely hard to control. Even with high doses of IV pain medicine, the pain is often only lessened and is never eliminated.
Besides the pain, a main issue with pancreatitis is that the pancreas releases digestive enzymes, and they get trapped in the pancreas. When my pancreas flares up, like it did from using the feeding tube, the pancreatic enzymes get stuck in my pancreas. The enzymes start digesting the pancreas. This can lead to life threatening complications.

The GI doctor I saw was not my regular doctor. My regular GI doctor could not see me until the end of April. This doctor tried to read a few years worth of notes in a few minutes. The GI doctor wanted the MRI to see if there was anything causing the increase in symptoms. After getting the MRI results, the new GI doctor would make a decision about what to do about my nutrition.

I am so sorry to hear of all this. It sounds as though you have been through a lot. I hope you have been able to find peace and comfort.
I apologize for any confusion. I have chronic pancreatitis. My body releases digestive enzymes which get stuck in my pancreas. The enzymes then digest my pancreas. This causes extreme pain and other symptoms. Eating is very hard because every time food enters the GI tract, digestive enzymes are released which in turn digests my pancreas and causes severe pain, damages my pancreas, etc.
Since Sept 2020, I had been begging doctors for medical intervention because I was losing a significant amount of weight. In March 2021, I was able to get a feeding tube. However, the feeding tube formula caused more pancreatitis attacks.

your doctor needs to look at gastroparesis treatments. Tpn is likely your only option at this point. If an NG and and NJ dont work, and even a peg isnt an option, then they need to just allow you to live on tpn. Utterly ridiculous. Your doctors need to watch the videos posted by the late Amy fisher and get educated.

It took a long time to regain the ability to vocalize. Unfortunately, I have problems saying certain letters, sounds and words. I try my best to speak, but the clarity of my speech is not the best. I have a written transcript in the description box of each video to help viewers in case they cannot understand my words. Thank you for your comment. It helps me know what areas of speech I still struggle with.
