In contrast to the, what? Twenty something films starring white characters? Not to mention Star Wars, Harry Potter, Doctor Who, I could go on and on. There's certainly no shortage of white representation in the mainstream. In the marvel franchise they actually white washed America Chavez to be a lighter skinned girl with straight hair as well as turning Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver white when in the comics they're Romani. They also whitewashed Sunspot in the New Mutants movie, he's black in the comics but lily white in the movie. They definitely stacked the cast. For a made for tv film to have Brandi, Jason Alexander, Whoopi Goldberg, Victor Garber, Bernadette Peters AND the goddess that is Whitney Houston, that's a ridiculous amount of big award winning names in one movie.
And so many of them took cuts in their pay just to make this. My favourite fact from this is that Whoopi bought her jewellery because the stuff they did have just looked tacky.
Shawn from Psych said, "You treat a woman like a person, then a princess, then a Greek goddess, then a person again" I've come to have that expectation from guys now.
if you didn’t know the braids that Brandy was wearing are micro braids which from afar don’t look like braids. You can let the ends loose and not braid all the way down. You can also braid all the way down and still curl the ends. You can use bendy rollers to curl the hair. Fun hairstyle to have just not fun to take out.
No cuz EVERYONE wanted them I was heartbroken when I realised it was a damn WIG the whole time my girls were suffering for those braids the whole time it’s a wig
When I was a child, this film was cocaine. Seriously, I didn't even know what cocaine was but I felt as if my mind had been assaulted with concentrated pixie dust. Happy birthday Sophia.
The Prince (Paolo) is fine, Brandy is gorgeous, both super talented, what's not to love? ❤️ Fun fact: Paolo said in the ballroom scene when Brandy came down, he really did fall in love in the moment & looks back on the scene & realizes "he wasn't breathing" at all. It is soooo cute & I'm not jealous at all 🥲
I mean yeah brandy's voice isn't a theatre voice but she still sounded amazing,I mean she's called the vocal Bible for a reason and I like that she kept her R&B voice for the songs so it didn't bother me.
right??? i think it makes her sound more unique. every time i listen to broadway versions the cinderella's just sound so boring even though they're "technically" suited for the songs (no offense to them, they're insanely talented!)
Fun fact, I don't know if you've seen Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, but it has a Filipino male romantic lead as well (and Lea Salonga has a cameo in one episode!). The actor is named Vincent Rodriguez III, and he said that seeing Paolo Montalban in this movie is what inspired him to go into acting!
Oh we will, the question is will it NOT be cringey and feel cheap? An excuse for the execs to pat themselves on the back? What's so easy to overlook about this Cinderella is why this WORKS so well? The answer CHEMISTRY! It's because the cast gravitate towards each other in the best way possible. It feels natural. I can believe Whoopie is the Filipino prince's mom because when they interact she's not just warm and motherly in a superficial surface manner but in a much deeper way that's hard for non parent actors to replicate. (Even then it's easy to fall flat) Same with the King, he really FEELS like the prince's dad. Bernadette has this fond, motherly exasperation around Minerva that it's easy to believe she's her mother. Again CHEMISTRY!
ABC originally wanted Whitney to be Cinderella, but the project took so long to come together, that Whitney's team decided she had grown too old, so they got Brandy (after a fight with execs who wanted Jewel). Imagine Whitney singing "My Own Little Corner!!!" 😍💕
This prince charming set the bar for "charming" too high and every prince in the live adaptions since have seemed like bland white bread in comparison. zero personality. 🤣
AHHHH YASSSS, seeing this for the first time aged 7 and thinking OMG Cinderella is allowed to be a beautiful black princess WITH BRAIDS like me! Really special movie! "Do I love because you're beautiful or are you beautiful because I love you?!" R&H LYRICS ARE JUST.....AHHHH
Sad part is that if this movie was made today it would be more "controversial" than it was in '97. I was a kid but I don't remember hearing a peep about the casting back then.
That’s so true. I wore this movie out when I was younger and I never even thought about the casting until I got older and was like oh that doesn’t make sense lol.
@@GummyDinosaursify Oh I 100% agree. I definitely couldn’t picture it being any other way. Our society is too up in arms about everything for this to happen now unfortunately .

after i saw this movie, i looked up the prince cuz hello hot, let mesee what else he did, and it is CRIMINAL that he didn't do many things like bitc hthe wasted potential, mans should've lead like 4 romcoms
I love this movie. Whitney Houston blessing us with her vocal cords and we as an audience accepting that a black woman and a white man made an Asian baby. I'm here for it.
What I always liked is that just before 'Falling in Love With Love' and halfway through 'A Lovely Night' Cinderella and her sisters were acting like regular girl whispering and giggling over romance, lets you think that if it wasn't for the stepmother's influence they could've been friends at least.
Don’t lie. Just about everyone wanted and still does to this day, Brandi’s gown. It is beautiful, sparkly, unique, and elegant. I love the blue that they used.
I feel like they made her dress a similar blue to the other people's dress because they wanted to remind us that she doesn't want to be seen as exquisitely perfect. She just wants to be seen as a normal person because she's not even seen as a person at home.
Also if you're wondering about my hair, my friend and I messed up and this was not my intended shade of orange LMAO it looks way healthier rn I swear!!
Happy birthday to you, Sophia, from a Libra! And wow you're three years older than me, I wouldn't have guessed but you look great, I thought you were 18 or 19! 😆🎂
Fun fact: I think I remember hearing this when I was a kid. At the ball the costume artist’s daughter is one of the dancers. Her mom made her dress a little different then the other’s in order to make her stand out just a bit more from the rest of the purples and teals in the crowd without overshadowing Cinderella’s sticking blue. If you notice one girl at the ball has a white skirt with the purple teal overlayed on top. During the “back breaking” lift she is right in front of the camera.
He was my first movie crush as a kid. I was in love with him and its funny because i never understood the rederict of asian men "not being attractive" that used to be thought of alot. Because my first tv crush was an asian man. Who was with a black woman in the movie and as a black girl who was surrounded by black people that push the whole "date your own race" narrative(this does not include my family who though are prodominantly black have many diff races within my family due to marriage or adoption ect.) I mean in the black community as a whole. This movie helped keep my resolve about my attraction to asian men and other non black people as i grew up. As well as romeo must die (yes people complain now about the age gap between them but it still opened the idea of romance for me.) The multicultural cast was splendid.
If you didnt know brandy and paolo will be reprising thier roles as cinderella and the prince in descendants 4 theyre both currently filming for the movie
I love that you chose two Bernadette Peters movies for your birthday. She played Sophie in Anastasia. This is my second favorite version of Cinderella. My first favorite version of Cinderella is Ever After with Drew Barrymore. Also I love your hair! It's such a gorgeous color and it looks amazing. Happy birthday! I hope you have an amazing birthday celebration.
My top 3 will always be 1: disney: Lily James 2: ever After 3: i call it Whitney’s to differentiate it from the original. These three are the best for similar reasons. But the second and third will always remain iconic.
FUN FACT: Apparently the shoes actually did legitimately fit Bernadette Peters by pure accident, and I think they DIDN'T fit Brandy. I dunno if the scene in the film was written after that was discovered or it already existed and it was sheer coincidence, but given how little money they were given for this film, my assumption is that the scene probably already existed and it's just the most hilarious happenstance that the shoes happened to fit Peters. Also also! It WAS made for TV, but I think they nearly had a theatrical release because it was so popular or something. It didn't end up happening obviously because it ended up getting decided that because the film had already been made for TV instead of theaters, it wouldn't quite work as well on a theater run. It being kinda small scale was part of its charm, but it WAS massively popular when it was released. It just hasn't been given as much attention since it aired as it should have by Disney. I think the reason Brandy works in this film is because her awkward acting fits into the character they wrote (Cinderella's very sheltered and doesn't really know how to interact with other people well), and they adjusted all of the theater songs to sound more hip hop/r&b, so her more pop/r&b/hip hop style fits into the arrangements they wrote, even though most of the other actors have a more theater-style to their voices. I don't think the stage production even COMPARES to this one, it's so messy with its weird "kindness" storyline, trying to add in so many extra things with the political sidestory and the ball is just WACKY. This one is absolute perfection, like it's simple, yes, but I think that works for Cinderella. Not every story needs to be extra complicated and this one hits just the right beats for the romance to feel believable and heartfelt and every character has a moment to shine for what they are. It's also HILARIOUS in a way literally no other Cinderella I've sen so far has managed to be. It also really captures a feel of being a stage musical caught on film in some ways, especially seen in the ball sequence as you mentioned. It's got CHOREOGRAPHY to it that feels exactly like what you would find in a real stage production, just with some cool camera angles added to it to enhance it. And the costumes are GORGEOUS quality and design, there's thought put into the color choices and how they fit in or don't with each other. I am also fully willing to believe that Cinderella's dress was probably originally going to be white until it became a DISNEY production and they swapped it to blue to fit in with their marketing and they couldn't then change the extras' dresses to a new color scheme. I think their color schemes were meant to match the King/Queen because they're all sycophants trying to be the next princess and fit into this family while the Prince and Cinderella always match each other color-wise and he has a WHITE JACKET (they just threw in the pale blue vest to match her dress). That's my theory, anyway. But yeah, the other two R&H TV movies, the stage production, any other Cinderella movie made ever? Boring. This one is peak Cinderella, hands down, no questions asked.
Wow, that's odd. When making a Cinderella movie, I would think making sure the glass slipper fits your Cinderella actress would be high on your list of priorities!
@@elsie8757 Given it was a TV movie made with an INSANELY low budget and little to no support from the powers that be, it's not surprising that they may have had to make a pair of shoes prior to Brandy coming on board or just as a prop with as much info as they had at the time and only realized the problem down the line and had to do as best they could to solve it. Obviously you CAN see her in the shoes at a few separate points so I'm assuming they had something to give Brandy at some point, but. I could be a bit off in the retelling of this story, too! I mostly remember the shoes fitting Bernadette Peters and everyone being astounded because of course it was completely unexpected!
*I LOVE this version so much. I love the chemistry between Paolo and Brandy and the way their voices compliment each other with the songs "The Sweetest Sound" and "Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful" and the fact that no one lost their shit over the fact that a black woman and a white man had an Asian child like they would now is amazing.*
I grew up watching this on TV and as a young Black girl it was so inspiring to see, what I considered, the 1st Black princess. It came on regularly on TV in the 90s because they wanted it to be accessible to everyone, not put behind a ticket "paywall." But I think many (particular non-Africa n American) didn't know about it or really care as much. I know everyone in my family watched this religiously!
This is my all time favorite version of Cinderella! I watched this all the time when I was a child and as a young black girl who always wanted to see a black princess, this movie meant everything. I'm so glad more people are watching it now because it deserves all of the praise it's getting! Brandy and Whitney Houston were my favorite singers and I loved seeing them here, and all of the other characters are amazing! This is diversity done right and Brandy is the true first black Disney princess!
This was actually one of the first Live Disney films that did Colorblind Casting which was unheard of in the 90's. Rather then go for historical accuracy they got people with talent. Plus Whitney Houston and Whoopi Goldberg helped produce it so that also may have something to do with it. But the fact that they just went full fantasy with... a fairy tale was done well. The songs are great, the acting is great and we had BRANDY as Cinderella with Whitney Houston as the Fairy Godmother, this was like the super bowl when i was a kid!
You can curl braids and if you had more quality resolution you'll see that her braids were intact in the updo. Those micro braids can give many diverse hairstyles and it's nice to see that in a disney movie
Okay, girl, you are a QUEEN. This movie was my favorite Cinderella growing up, responsible for introducing me to Whitney, Brandy, AND Bernadette. Also, I know I'm not alone in this prince being my gay awakening. Oh, and, Sophia, if you need someone to sing the boy parts for you, I volunteer.
Girl, your voice, stop. Perfect. I had the biggest crush on the prince when I was little lol. This will always remain the superior version of Cinderella. I also feel like we shouldn't mention the Camila one...
The part, when the king says “if I were a young man”, I’d…, and then the queen says “you’d what dear?”, and then he paused for a brief moment, and then said “well, I’d be a young man” and then they laughed 😂
honestly, I'm glad I wasn't the only one who just started smiling and got giggles and the feels when ten minutes ago started--- it just makes you wanna twirl around your room and play pretend all over again

Fun fact:. Whitney was originally going to play Cinderella, but the movie kept getting pushed back. By the time they the movie was made, she was a 33 year old mom and felt they Brandy would be better for the role. Brandy agreed to take the role, but only if Whitney would play the fairy godmother.
This was my first Cinderella movie. My family was living in England at the time, but my Grandmother recorded the TV special on VHS and mailed it for us grandkids. My sister and I love this movie, we were so excited when it was released on Disney plus. I always say “Ever after” is the best Cinderella movie, story wise; but this Cinderella is my personal favorite, no matter how cheesy it is 😂 Also, as lovely as Brandy's voice was then, she has only become better as the years go by. She did a medley with Todrick Hall to celebrate the release of this movie onto Disney plus, called "Cinderella medley (starring Brandy)".
words cannot express how much i adore this film.my grandma had gotten it on VHS for my sister when we were younger so we literally grew up watching it SO MUCH. Fun fact, there really wasn't much for Bernadette Peters to sing in R&H Cinderella which they all agreed was a travesty so they added the song, "Falling in love with love" which was from another musical called The Boys from Syracuse which was a musical from the 1930's based on Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors. The song was also written by Richard Rogers and fit perfectly with the Evil stepmother concept and with the style and feel of the rest of the songs in Cinderella. It was such a good choice that most people didn't know it was not original to R&H Cinderella :)
Gurl, that hair is spicy as hell! It's so bright and stunning! I never knew I've been watching your videos until I noticed how long your hair has grown 😭😭
Though it's a start to TV budget - I am obsessed with the costumes and production design! Such a wonderful sign of the times and ages pretty well! (also the casual inclusion like the background actors - I don't really see that in films around now). On that point look at the black background actor on the left @19:37
One of my favorite things about this movie is how much personality each character was given. The characters aren't just token stereotypes like in the original movies, the Queen actually being present and- alive💀, the prince not just whining about how he doesn't wanna get married because he wants to be free and not settle down (unlike some crappy remakes, etc), it's just so nice. Also I love that they decided to do a blind casting, because I was able to just love the movie more as a kid and connect to it, loving the characters more(even though I'm 15). Not to mention the music, like- c'mon. It's just perfect.

The only times I would watch this movie was when it was on at 3 in the morning and me and my little sister were so delirious everything about this was funny. Like when the ladder fell we died for absolutely no reason
Honestly I Like how Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella is not afraid to be feminine. She can be strong and determined and still want to find true love and imagine herself as a princess. This whole Not like other girls Camila Cabelo thing is so tiring
I had this movie on VHS alongside the animated Disney movie and the Drew Barrymore Ever After film, it's the best versions of the story. If you haven't seen Ever After, please do. Not only is it well written and the character development is almost god tier and it has the story take place as a period film, it also has Leonardo DaVinci (yes, DaVinci) as the Fairy Godmother and Angelica Huston as the evil Stepmother.

Whitney's incomparable!
It's really hard to top her voice!
And she was gorgeous
Shawn from Psych said, "You treat a woman like a person, then a princess, then a Greek goddess, then a person again" I've come to have that expectation from guys now.
Of course Henry said it first though ;)
But it's too high!😭
Hmm, knowing what I know about Greek Goddesses, not sure that's a good thing...
if you didn’t know the braids that Brandy was wearing are micro braids which from afar don’t look like braids. You can let the ends loose and not braid all the way down. You can also braid all the way down and still curl the ends. You can use bendy rollers to curl the hair. Fun hairstyle to have just not fun to take out.
Yes! Not super fun to put in either lol but it's a very cute & versatile style!! I still haven't discovered all the ways to wear it
micro braids are so pretty!!
And she still had those micro braids in when she "transformed", hence why it looked as if she just curled her hair :)

I love colorblind theatre casting 🙏🏽 honestly idk if we’ll ever see it on film again in our lifetimes

I love this movie. Whitney Houston blessing us with her vocal cords and we as an audience accepting that a black woman and a white man made an Asian baby. I'm here for it.
Whitney was gorgeous and had the voice of an angel!
The prince in this movie had such a pure, charismatic innocence about him that perfectly complemented Brandy’s timid and demure personality
Or they just liked the blue

Fun fact: I think I remember hearing this when I was a kid. At the ball the costume artist’s daughter is one of the dancers. Her mom made her dress a little different then the other’s in order to make her stand out just a bit more from the rest of the purples and teals in the crowd without overshadowing Cinderella’s sticking blue. If you notice one girl at the ball has a white skirt with the purple teal overlayed on top. During the “back breaking” lift she is right in front of the camera.
Thats so sweet ToT
He was my first movie crush as a kid. I was in love with him and its funny because i never understood the rederict of asian men "not being attractive" that used to be thought of alot. Because my first tv crush was an asian man. Who was with a black woman in the movie and as a black girl who was surrounded by black people that push the whole "date your own race" narrative(this does not include my family who though are prodominantly black have many diff races within my family due to marriage or adoption ect.) I mean in the black community as a whole. This movie helped keep my resolve about my attraction to asian men and other non black people as i grew up. As well as romeo must die (yes people complain now about the age gap between them but it still opened the idea of romance for me.)
The multicultural cast was splendid.

Bernadette Peters is an underrated icon 🧚🏼♂️🧚🏼♀️🧚🏼
Ever After with Drew Barrymore is SUCH an iconic movie
My top 3 will always be
1: disney: Lily James
2: ever After
3: i call it Whitney’s to differentiate it from the original.
These three are the best for similar reasons.
But the second and third will always remain iconic.
200th like
Also yes, I think Ever After is a masterpiece
So we are not going to talk about how amazing her hair looks
*I LOVE this version so much. I love the chemistry between Paolo and Brandy and the way their voices compliment each other with the songs "The Sweetest Sound" and "Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful" and the fact that no one lost their shit over the fact that a black woman and a white man had an Asian child like they would now is amazing.*

I had a huge crush on the prince when I was a kid, and the costumes were so fabulous.

The songs are great, the acting is great and we had BRANDY as Cinderella with Whitney Houston as the Fairy Godmother, this was like the super bowl when i was a kid!
the way sophia screams WHITNEY in the beginning just gives mom vibes
You can curl braids and if you had more quality resolution you'll see that her braids were intact in the updo. Those micro braids can give many diverse hairstyles and it's nice to see that in a disney movie

I always say “Ever after” is the best Cinderella movie, story wise; but this Cinderella is my personal favorite, no matter how cheesy it is 😂
Also, as lovely as Brandy's voice was then, she has only become better as the years go by. She did a medley with Todrick Hall to celebrate the release of this movie onto Disney plus, called "Cinderella medley (starring Brandy)".
Whoopi was one of the biggest actors of the 90s, so she was a major catch. This casting deserves to be in theaters

The lyrics, however, are not by Oscar Hammerstein, but by Richard Rodgers' first lyric-writing partner, Lorenz Hart.

This is honestly my favorite Cinderella. Brandy as Cinderella is top tier for me. One of the best.
