Seriously NO CHILD SHOULD BE LEFT ALONE LIKE THAT. Especially buying you presents yoh people are dumb. They basically put that child on a silver platter.
@@HIGHER7RUTH wow. What a disrespectful comment. The area he lived in was mostly safe, and he had been raised to be polite and listen to adults. It's not every single time a child is left alone that they will be in danger. He chose to go to town alone, and in the past that may not have been a problem. It's a tragic mistake. Daniel lost his life and his family will never be the same. No need to be cruel about it.
Perhaps if they had been more responsible about letting him wander about unsupervised it never would have happened. It's sad and terrible that the world has become this way, but it's the reality.
I don't care if a child will be found in a friend's house or whatever... Every single case of parents coming to report a missing child should be treated seriously the second it's being taken. They always freakin emphasize how the first hours are crucial and then they won't do a shit in those first few hours. Absolutely disgraceful.
Exactly. It would be better to look ASAP and find out he was safe at a friend's the whole time than leave it for hours and find out they've been abducted when it's too late.
Yeah all law enforcement should stop what they're doing to find the child, if hes ok then hes ok, cant waste time in those situations. Thank god for Amber alerts
The one that makes my blood boil is the “they probably ran away” comment we hear all the time in true crime. Apparently they’re not in the business of finding runaway minors???
As an Aussie, Mike has provided more information on this case than any Australian media. As many comments say, child sex offenders will never be rehabilitated and should stay in prison. WTF are the courts thinking when they release predators onto the street
I know! I am from WA and I have been following this case from the start. I never knew about the passionfruit vines or the previous victim in the burnt out car. Unbelievable.
The reason they get let out is because if you know you have nothing to lose by leaving a witness you are much more likely to commit murder. They should get one chance at rehabilitation, no public record of what you did (though you can't get a job anywhere that you'll come into contact with children) and they should be given a GPS tracking implant that has a rechargeable battery (wireless charging), the implant would have a permanent battery backup and a small vibration motor to warn the person of low battery. If the rechargable battery runs out for more than an hour and they don't answer phone calls police would be dispatched to arrest them for tampering with a monitoring device. The implant could also contain a stun gun module or a concentrated vial of a somewhat safe anesthetic such as ketamine or midazolam so they can be immobilised remotely if they try to run. The implant could link up to a mobile phone for further monitoring and data. The implant could be used for geofencing too so they can't go near a schools or other areas with lots of children. If they reoffend then they get a full life sentence. One chance and lifetime monitoring. Also laws in some places need changed so that if there's an age gap of a maximum of 3 years and the people are in a relationship they aren't charged with any crime. I've heard of a few cases in the US where a 18 year old was dating a 17 year old and ended up a registered sex offender because the girl's parents didn't like him. Canada already has this 'Romeo and Juliet' law IIRC.
@@daviddavidson2357 Do you understand how much all of that would cost? And for what? Just risking one child isn’t worth it, a much better and more cost effective option is a bullet to the head. Child rapists and murderers don’t deserve a second chance to hurt another child.
When they're caught they should be put away and throw away the key...yet the courts are more intent on punishing more for drugs charges than for harming children...they will never change and should be locked up
Daniel disappeared in my home town, his body was found within walking distance from my house.....everytime i drove my kids to school id go past the road he was found off and it would break my heart. Ive moved from the area now but whenever i go back i think of Daniel. I got to meet Bruce and Denise at my daughters school where they were teaching kids about stranger danger. Ill never forget Denise's eyes, that woman has gone through pure and utter hell and her eyes show it. My heart hurts so much for that family.
I was 11 and living in Nambour when this happened. I don't remember the coming to my school to talk, but I do know that everything really changed afterwards
yes you can see the pain in her eyes and the suffering of not knowing where their child was is indefensible that creep should never be allowed out period
Since Daniel's disappearance we have "day for Daniel" here in Australia. Once a year, all Primary school kids wear a red shirt in his honour and raise money for the foundation. It's so heart-warming to see. His parents have worked tirelessly since his disappearance, traveling to schools across the country to educate children on stranger danger and to improve child safety.
This one was a hard watch for me. As an Australian, this was one of our most publicised and long term cases of a missing child (in modern times). Gut wrenching that he went to buy christmas presents and was abducted by a pedophile when he should have been safe. His parents are the epitome of grace and courage under extreme circumstances, I don't know how they did it. I would've skinned him alive.
I keep hoping that court systems all over the world will realize that people who offend against children should NEVER be let out of prison. RIP, Daniel... 😥🌹
And somehow the term “pedophile” is offensive and shouldn’t be used any more. Instead Minor Attracted Person is better to not shame these individuals for “something they can’t control” - blows my freaking mind.
@@S7ZEE Unfortunately with the introduction of the internet social platforms. More people have decided everything is offensive. I do not conform to social idiocies. As far as I see them. They are sick twisted f#=$ that need to be tortured.
As an Australian, I just want to say - there's not a person in this country who DOESN'T know this case. It is by far the most high profile murder of the past 20 years. Daniel's parents are incredible.
I’m an Aussie & Daniel will never be forgotten. The Morcombe family are incredible people. Bruce & Denise still strive through their foundation to educate on stranger danger & child abuse, in the hope of saving other children. Daniel’s case & beautiful face is seared into the minds of all Australians as are the images of the terrible pain in his parents faces on all the coverage of the case. Denise’s eyes still haunt me. As a mother I can’t imagine the horror of their circumstance. It’s heartbreaking also not forgetting his older brother & twin brother.💔 RIP sweet Daniel.
At least u notice it. Every non American country always criticizes the U.S of having a horrible justice system, meantime you get one year in jail for sexually assaulting a 7 year old .. The laws in your country are abominable
@@smartyjonez5470 Many countries do not punish violent behavior enough but in the US we hand out some absurdly long sentences for relatively minor infractions. Both things can be true.
General note: Missing children--no matter how likely to have been sidetracked harmlessly--should always be a priority. How have we failed to realize this? And short, then discounted, sentences for sexual assault are disgusting.
The answer to this is easy....shitty parents who shouldn't have kids. So many parents are bad at the job that they too easily rely on the police and everyone else to keep track of their crotch fruit. People should have to take a test in order to have kids.
The police need to be retrained that kids need to be located within the first 24 hours, runaways or no. How many kids never made it back home back in the... well, up through the 1990's, at the very least, because police considered them a runaway and that they would "come home".
its crazy how sexual assult isnt treated as serious by the law... I think maybe its just not considered that serious of a crime compared to other crimes, since the damage it does to the victim is generally psychological, not physical (or financial) so more people kinda dismiss the action because they cant see its consequences as directly as something like a robbery or knife attack or something. but even someone who doesn't think its that serious a crime shouldn't be so easy on a sex offender because someone who commits that kind of crime is likely to do even worse things, and giving them longer sentanes will prevent their future crimes. its the same thing as animal cruelty laws, its often not considered that serious of an offence since these are animals and not humans and many countries don't even have animal cruelty laws, but a person who is cruel to animals is pretty likely to be cruel to people too
We don't have the manpower nor money to pay those men, nor resources, to send them out to every missing child case. Do you know how many kids are reported missing every day? And that an overwhelming majority of them come home safe, usually just cuz they wanted to stay at their friends an extra couple hours or something. How do we figure out which cases to dedicate our police to? Probably by making parents wait a bit, go looking in their own, and if the kid still isn't found after a certain amount of time, then we can dedicate some of the few the police and precious resources to finding that child. Use just a bit of critical thinking, don't get caught up in your feelings, try to figure out why we don't go searching for every single kid as soon as they are reported missing. And don't just assume it's cuz cops are lazy, that's just an excuse to stop thinking.
Not only did he get boiling water poured on him in prison, but he also got stabbed in the neck with a sharpened toothbrush a couple years later. It's good to know there are certain things even the worst criminals won't forgive. Some people say the death sentence would be better, but I think that's giving them the easy way out. Letting them live with the knowledge of what they've done feels more like justice being served to me.
yes but he is laughing his head off and jerking off every night to the memory of what he did to Daniel. People like this have no remorse or conscience. 20 years and could be paroled. Good to know he is being attacked in prison though. Many crims have sons that age.
@Stuart True, he might be eligible for parole someday, but with his record he'll never get it. Highly doubtful he's laughing and jerking off every night, or feeling like he won somehow. He's caged like an animal with other animals that are already making his life hell. He probably has to sleep 2 feet away from someone else, and shower in a group with dozens of creeps. He's probably the only one who _isnt_ getting his rocks off, because he's too busy getting "rocked" on. I'm sure he's not having any fun.
@@LPCLASSICAL What makes you so certain of that? You're not a mind reader, and people aren't that binary. For all we know, he hates himself more than anyone else does. That's how it is for most addicts. If he doesn't regret it now, maybe someday he will. Immortality would be a greater punishment than a quick, painless death. Anyway it doesn't matter, he's where he belongs. I don't know why you're imagining him laughing and jerking off in his cell every night as if he got away scot-free.
This was a case that was completely preventable why the judicial system is so lenient and willing to allow sex offenders to get out of jail early is beyond me. It just keeps happening, and keeps happening. Those types of people they never stop doing those crimes they just do a better job at not getting caught.
EXACTLY!!! If he was properly put away for life when the poor 6 year old was abducted & SA, poor Daniel would still be alive. It’s a travesty that needs to stop!! Crimes against children should be at the top of the tier for the judicial system & sentencing guidelines. What’s it going to take??
What's worse is that they are even protected in jail n put in protective custody. When I was in they would let us out the yard n then when we were locked in n put back in our cells is when they were let out. Putrid is what it is. They should be let out with the general population in there no matter what too
Watching these cases just makes my blood boil. Brett literally had child sex abuse convictions. Two of them…. When will the justice system realize that these people are not capable of rehabilitation. Crimes against children should be life sentences. Things like this wouldn’t happen as often if we didn’t chemically castrate or kept very watchful eyes on convicted abusers. All my prayers go to Daniel’s family…
(I'm going to edit this one time, if you think it's a bad thing that more attention is paid to the offenders during trial and sentencing then I can't help you. Obviously something is broken with you. If more attention has been paid to the man in the story he would have likely gotten much more than a year and the kid would have probably still be alive. Saying that people should have more attention paid to them didn't automatically mean they get lighter sentences. Some may warrant more rehabilitative options but some folks may be found to be more dangerous than the current system would find them to be. So again, if you get mad that my comment is that MORE scrutiny should be put on people during a fair trial then I think you're the weird one) It's not right to say that everyone cannot be rehabilitated, the studies that say this are flawed. However, this isn't my country but I can say in my country the system needs to be reevaluated. Obviously something happened here where this person was not correctly evaluated for his danger to society. The reason this happens in the US is because they over prosecute so actual dangerous criminals are not properly evaluated because they don't have time. (and not just these crimes, all crimes). For example in my state two 17 year olds who sent nude photos to each other were convicted of sex offences. Under your statement they would be thrown in prison forever and castrated. But when the government is focused on these things how do they have time to look at who is actually dangerous and who is not? It's not defending people like this man, it's saying that if they sound use sense then they would be able to be more attentive to what they are doing with dangerous offenders
@@bec7080 You're talking about two different charges. Just because you can't tell the difference between a grown man abusing children and two children having fun doesn't mean the rest of the world has the same issue. Adults who abuse children will never change. Quit trying to defend the indefensible, because it makes you worse than them. At least they can't control themselves. What's your excuse?
It's amazing how Bret, assaulted TWO CHILDREN and got off with literally nothing. Actually disgusting. The system should be ashamed of themselves. I agree crimes against children should be life sentences.
What strikes me is he chose to work hard for his money then chose to spend it on other people, mainly his family, at such a young age. Really shows what a kind person he was. RIP Daniel.
@@Xena9002 That was attempted murder on top of rape. How did that man get out of jail so quickly? I feel like the justice system failed multiple times with this man.
I absolutely cannot believe that after that and the first incident he was in and out of jail within 4 years... it is so wrong. If he was more accurately sentenced, then this whole thing never would have even happened to Daniel. So heartbreaking. I don't think there is any reform of child rapists. The re offending rates for them is soo high and they can never get rid of that disgusting urge. They should be dropped off onto some deserted island in my opinion.. survival of the fittest.
I'm from Australia more specifically QLD where this happened. I'm 28 so when I was younger when this happened I can tell you the stain it left on this country was one of the biggest in our history crime case wise. Daniel is the reason you can call reverse anywhere on any phone or pay phone to call your parents to get home safe, he is the reason you can hop on a bus under 18 without the fare if you have no money, taxi drivers will usually do the same. A lot of things changed after this case. I remember being a kid and parents wouldn't let you out of there sight everyone sat every night watched the news in hopes he would be found but sadly he never came home. This case brought the country together and tore us apart all at the same time. Thank you for covering this case Mike.
The reverse function on phones has been around since well before the Daniel morcombe case. However yes buses are meant to collect any children, paid or not. Sadly tales of kids being left behind by bus drivers are still common. RIP Daniel.
Wow, that's very responsible of Australian politicians. It's sad to see the difference now between USA, you see 19 kids killed recently and no action still, while Australia lost one child and the action done saved a lot in the process.
@@avariceseven9443 oh mate, the amount of school shootings and the stubborn inaction of your government both angers me and breaks my heart. I'm so sorry you're dealing with that.
On one hand, the police say that the first few hours in a child kidnapping case are critical to them being found alive and on the other hand, they do not act on a parent's complaint promptly, waiting for several hours to begin the investigation. At least in cases of child abduction, the hunt should begin ASAP & if the child returns or is found with a friend, so be it. Even if one child's life is saved by acting sooner, it's worth a hundred false alerts. RIP Daniel!
The problem with that is many children go missing every day and over 99% of them turn up. Unless there's evidence of an abduction it's unreasonable to expect the police to go looking for them unless they are very young. Saying that by nightfall the Police should have got their finger out instead of waiting till the next day. But the sad fact is he was kidnapped at just before 2:30pm and very likely dead before his absence was registered at 4:30-5:30pm.
I live in Queensland, Brisbane. I remember this, I grew up hearing about Daniel, school buses weren't allowed to decline taking any school students after this happened. We still celebrate his day, wearing red, trying to keep our kids safe.
The "justice" system failed the children once again. Let the guy out in one year and think he would never do it again? Usually, predators end up killing little children. Judges should be held accountable.
This is my sentiment also. If this filthy grub had spent the appropriate time in prison, he may not have been able to commit this heinous crime. Why don’t the powers that be understand that ? Non parole period of 20 years ? Are you kidding me ? After what he has done ? The only way this piece of shite should leave prison is in a cardboard, yep, cardboard box. Definitely need lengthy prison sentences attached to crimes agaisnt children , and I used to believe that it should be immediate death sentence if someone was to have touched or abused a kid, but then I started watching these crime documentaries on UA-cam and it became quite obvious why the death penalty was taken away for these situations. While it is heart breaking and traumatizing to go through something like that, if death penalty was the punishment, there would be no leverage from the judicial system in an attempt to get these kids returned alive. If abusing the kid or killing the kid serves the same sentence, then 99.9% of the time the perpetrators would just unalive the kid and ditch them somewhere.
Daniel’s case will forever haunt every Australian and anyone that learns about it I imagine. I had the absolute privilege to meet Mr and Mrs Morcombe last week, when they visited my son’s school, very lovely people. Rest in peace and paradise, Daniel Morcombe.
Mr and Mrs Morcombe are incredible people - what an honor to meet them Lana! Absolutely spot on when you say that the case haunts Australians... there's not many people who don't know Daniel's name or the Morcombe family name after what happened. So much respect to them.
100% respect, to go through what they went through and then to devote their lives to get the awareness out there, to help keep our babies safe. I was determined to meet them and give them both a hug and say thank you, it was a very special moment for me, they don’t know me at all but it feels like I’ve known them for most of my life.
This case profoundly affected most Australians. As a parent I cannot imagine the horror the Morcombe family went through, and I still think about them a lot. I was more strict than I thought I'd be with my children because of Daniel. I now have twins & a single, and my heart aches for Daniel's siblings. Daniel's parents are inspirational.
Finding out the number 1 suspect of your sons murder is a guy who has already molested multiple children already has to be the most infuriating stuff I've ever heard. I thought America was bad with letting off violent criminals, but Australia really takes the cake.
Very hard to even contemplate the pain these people have gone through 😭😭 I’m not a sadist but actually hope this man has boiling water pored on him everyday of his miserable life & lives in fear of it,still won’t be anywhere near the pain & terror he inflicted on this innocent young boy, & his parents & family😔 R.I.P Daniel ♥️♥️♥️♥️

Mike i would really like you to look into William Tyrell, he is another Australian boy who went missing too long ago, no one has been charged and William is still missing, his case needs not to be forgotten. Thank you Mike for all you do.
Thank you for covering this. I remember growing up as child seeing Daniel’s picture in the streets, in shopping centres etc for years. Thanks to Daniel it’s now illegal in QLD to leave children behind at the bus stop even if they can’t afford the fare.
This little boy’s face is engrained forever in my mind. I can still remember them looking for him -the news showing pictures of his face with his big blue eyes, playing with a kitten. Describing what he was wearing. Where he was going. Christmas shopping for family, bless his soul. I was glad someone years later was held accountable. But avoided details because it was just so terribly sad. His legacy is felt throughout Australia.
The monster should have never been free. He had already been caught multiple times, so it is obvious that the next time he would make sure he had "no witnesses". They don't stop the crimes, they escalate the crimes. Many p3dos have admitted that they can't stop.
Hi from Australia, I'm from the Sunshine coast, I even helped look for Daniel when he first went missing this really hit our community hard and every year Daniel's parents still do the walk for Daniel. Very sad
As a mother of two young boys, stories involving children are the hardest for me to watch. I can't, nor would I want to, imagine the pain his family have gone through.
Seriously it makes me sick to my stomach. Especially when you hear they've been caught doing this before yet they still let these sick people back out to do it all over again. The laws to protect offenders is sickening.
@@belmum1689 that's actually a really contradicting statement. They went through it because they had to they had other children to live for. One that is close to home, literally. The spot Daniel was taken from is under an overpass near me. It has quite a significant roadside ‘shrine’ in his memory. While I feel very sad for the whole family, I think Daniel’s twin must have been hit hard by this and the family efforts over the years to find out what happened and to bring Daniel home.
Daniel's case is so sad & messed up. My highschool bestie lived at Palmwoods & we used to hitchhike along the Nambour highway at the time this happened. Never hitchhiked again after Daniel's disappearance. It's taken a great toll on his family, you can see it in Denise's (Daniel's mum) eyes. I'm glad his twin was shielded from the media, could not imagine how devastating the loss must have been for him
The smirk on his face when he was being arrested......😡 I had actually never heard of this case. So sad, but his parents never gave up. Thanks Mike for all you do!
I know, that smirk & his aloof response makes my blood boil. Like Mike, I don’t advocate violence but this POS got what he deserved in prison. Did you see it literally melted his tattoo? Poor baby.
When I saw this one pop up I literally went “oh no, not poor Daniel” but I think people should know about this horrid story and about Daniel and his wonderful family. They have done so much turning their pain into action to stop this from happening again educating kids.
I was just glad to see that they were still together as time went on. In so many cases like this, the depression, anger, stress, etc. tear the parents apart. It is devastating already with what happened to the child, but when marriages break up on top of it, that is just so sad - especially when they have other kids that need them.

If you don't know them or even if you do, dont trust them, some people are bad. God love Daniel
I was a year older than Daniel when he disappeared, although at the other end of the country. At the time I thought it was really sad, but over time, it sucks to say but it happens to everyone not directly impacted, other news takes over. Every year there would be another appeal by his parents and I'd be sad again. When he was found and the murderer caught, I was older and reflected on how much my life had changed in that time and suddenly it really all hit me. Over that time Daniel should have been going through the same things, learning things about himself and the world. Every joy, every sorrow for me in that space of time, was time I had. Other people have said it but it's true, this case shook Australia, especially when we knew the details of the killer. I have no idea how his parents found, and keep their strength. I honestly hope I never have to know. They are the best kind of people. RIP Daniel Morcombe mourned by a country that loves you
Just the thought of an innocent little boy going out to buy Christmas presents, and then encounters a sex predator, really digs into my gut. Very sad and tragic story.
Right? A 13 year old boy who was already working hard to make his own money... and he had saved it up to buy Christmas presents for his whole family. It’s a surreal feeling that he never grew up and how much he and his family were robbed of. His murderer had a long history of sexual abuse and as usual our system failed us all by allowing him to roam free.
I remember this day so well he was taken from outside my children’s college and was the same age as my eldest daughter. The Morcombes have been such an amazing couple who have selflessly in their grief started a foundation to educate others on safety … the saddest part is that they did not recover all the bones and his skull was never been recovered … there had been major flooding through the area in the past years … I remember sitting next to Denise whilst waiting for Chinese food a week or so after the disappearance … the anguish and heart ache just emanated from her I remember getting in my car and just sobbing … this touched the souls of every Australian ! Thanks for covering it so beautifully Mike … on the upside his twin Bradley married his school sweetheart Anna and they have now welcomed their own baby into the world x p.s you pronounced Maroochydore perfectly lol
I remember seeing on the news when he was arrested and Daniels parents were asked how they feel His father replied” “you picked the wrong family “ He was right for every year his parents tirelessly continued to hound police keep Daniel in the media and do drives to raise awareness about child predators and safety . They go to schools and do talks to kids also. The little boy who was battered and strangled and put in the trunk of the car only survived bc this creep thought he was dead placed him inside the trunk after smashing bricks onto his body and the boy awoke from unconsciousness found his way back to the caravan pk with broken bones and he was 6!!
Right?? That poor little 6 year old. When people first found him they thought he had been hit by car such were the extent of his injuries. How Cowan was allowed in society is an utter disgrace to our justice system here in Australia.
This case always strikes a chord with me. I live about two hours south of Daniel's home and I still clearly remember the day his parents came here to talk to people in the streets and put up posters. It was in the early weeks after Daniel went missing and you could see the pain written clearly on their faces. They worked tirelessly, visiting every town just in case there was a chance Daniel had run away. Back then there was still hope and no one had any idea how this would eventually end. The Morcombe family has set up a foundation to support victims of crime and every year they have a day of action for child safety called Day for Daniel. They are still working hard to help victims of crimes like this.
Let’s hope he doesn’t make it that long. If he IS paroled there should be a serious revolt!!! The citizens in these countries that do not have life w/ out parole should take things into their own hands, sadly.
@@deniserossiter1059 I hope they make his life hell for the next 20 years, and then the day before his parole, the poor guy slips in the shower and gets stabbed 47 times in the face, and never quite makes it out the door.
@@deniserossiter1059 I am strongly against vigilante action, but can assure you that, given the nature and notoriety of the case, Cowan will be closely watched like a hawk for the rest of his life IF he gets out. Other criminals who have committed similar crimes here have not got out despite serving their full term. Public and political pressure do make a difference. This case was devastating here in Aus as it unfolded. I remember the brother blaming himself for not going with Daniel that day and it was just heartbreaking. It was such a relief when they finally found the killer after years and years of searching. I hope the whole family is doing ok now. Thanks for covering this
O. M. G the brother! I wasn't thinking about that. I'm sure he's tore all apart. They were twins right? Makes it soooooo much worse. I really hope he's found peace. Wow.
Mike you have a gift. Never inappropriate, always informative, and injecting enough appropriate humor to keep these morbid sickening cases palatable. You do a service to this victims by getting their stories out there. Kudos man. Keep up the outstanding work
This case was a big part of my childhood. I was in high school when Brett Peter Cowan was arrested. My school was on the overpass where he was taken and BPC went to my schools church. Once he had been arrested the pastor at my school was also as it turns out he knew all along. Crazy case but the Bruce and Denise Morcombe are pillars of the community here and have been for my entire life. The foundation they created has done so many amazing things for our community. RIP Daniel ❤️
When you can get more time in jail possessing marijuana than you can for molesting a child the system is flawed. The first offense for sexually assaulting anyone, child or adult, should mean a life sentence.
@@myfaveyoutube do your own research. There are plenty of people in jail for 5, 10, or 20+ years for marijuana possession with intent to sell while there are thousands of cases of child molesters like this one getting out after 7 years and then going on to murder. Plenty of serial killers as well. Shouldn’t be hard for you to find.
I don't think the taxpayers should have to pay for the survival and upkeep of someone like that. A tight noose and a short drop seems more appropriate for anyone who would intentionally do that to a child.
It's nice to see that Australia as well as us, in the USA, despise child predators and talk a good game about how bad they are but STILL let them roam among us. Give 'em a year or two and let them free. Then we act all shocked when they do more horrible things. If everyone cared as much about getting them off the street as much as they cared about Johnny Depp or Harry and Meghan, maybe things would be better. It all happens because the people let it happen. Child molesters need to be out of society permanently. Period.
Couldn't have said it better myself. These scumbags prove time and time again that they can't be rehabilitated. The only cure for them is a length of rope.
Your right, too many times they let them out and they go find another victim. I personally don't believe these types of people can be rehabilitated, they should be kept in prison for alot longer than a year or two like the sick bastard brett got. What's he do after he gets out for molesting a 6 and 7 year old? Murder an 8 year old, disgusting.
As an Aussie/Queensland school teacher who has met Bruce & Denise Morcombe (Daniel’s parents), this case felt a little too close to home. Hence, it took me a while to work up the courage to watch this episode. The work Bruce & Denise do in providing child safety education to kids is phenomenal. If I knew how, I’d attach a photo of them, myself & the principal of the school I worked at when I first met them. The photo has orbs in it. I like to think that perhaps this indicates Daniel’s spirit is at peace, remains close to them & lives on.
My son ran away because we'd just bought a new house and he didn't want to move. We called the police, when we realised we couldn't find him. I gave the policeman a picture of him to copy and distribute, they acted very fast. Eventually we found him thank god. When the officer gave me the photo back his hands were shaking and there was a huge crease at the bottom where he'd been nervously gripping the photo whilst on the radio. It made me realise how real a situation like that is for these people and I've never doubted their humanity since.
That's really nice that he took it so seriously, sometimes you get lucky and get a cop with a heart but too many times you end up with someone that think they know everything because of their position and knows more about your child than you do and a lot of times they don't even have children and can't possibly put themselves in your shoes, and drop the ball really bad. I know 2 people unfortunately that this happened to and it makes you want physically choke some sense into the person. I've seen a lot of cases on TV, real stories from people that this has happened too also and it just so frustrating that runaway is their first thought a lot of times regardless of the relationship between the parents and child. Most parents know if their kid ran away or not and even if they did anything could happen so it shouldn't be taken anyless seriously than if someone had seen it happen .
The judge that gave him such a light sentence in the first case, and whoever decided to release him from prison so fast, is directly responsible for this boy's death, and should be held accountable. These people should learn that their primary duty is to protect the public, not to show criminals how "progressive" they are.
There's nothing progressive about so-called Progressives. They are actually regressive if you think about it. Every Progressive city in America is high in crime, poverty, drugs, etc.
@@rebeccagable9629 that tells you exactly what kind of people these judges are. It's a huge problem across the world. Court systems treating dirty sick pedos lightly because the system is set up an drunk by pedos or pedo sympathisers. They dont want to jail the people who supply their own sick kicks.
As an Australian, my heart drops every time I see his name. But it’s an important story, thank you. Cowan should never have been free walking the streets at the time, such a sick history. But even now my children who weren’t born at the time know about Daniel, they do “Day for Daniel” and because of the Morcombe’s know a lot about stranger danger. Amazing family. Thanks for talking about it ❤️
Never heard about this case till now, and my blood is boiling. Why his murderer wasn't jailed for life after the first "attack'' on a 6 year old I have NO IDEA! His injuries were so bad, cops thought he'd been hit by a car. I'm sick of this.
@@rdred8693 It's even worse - at the time of Daniel Morcombe's kidnap and murder, Brett Cowan walking free after being TWICE convicted & imprisoned for raping little boys in separate crimes six years apart. The first victim was a seven year old boy in 1987, the second the six year old you mentioned, who was so seriously injured during the sexual assault he nearly died. Those are attacks he was caught for - who knows how many other sexual assaults on children he got away with? TJ Cole's post here doesn't surprise me - I think it's highly unlikely Daniel Morcombe is the only child Cowan ever murdered. He shows every indication of being a potential serial killer. As a sex killer Cowan was highly motivated to re-offend, and he progressed to murder to prevent victims identifying him and getting him jailed again, and possibly as an additional sadistic sexual thrill. It is shocking he was ever regarded by the authorities as a suitable candidate to be freed from prison after such horrific, sexually-motivated attacks on children. After his release from jail in 1997 for the second child rape, he was ordered to attend a sex offenders treatment program. What a sick joke! Sex offenders cannot be rehabilitated - they are hard wired to enjoy violent, non consensual sexual activity, so will always be a threat to the public. Sex crimes frequently escalate in violence, and become murder cases. It's high time societies recognised the seriousness of sex offending - even so-called 'minor' sex crimes like voyeurism and stalking, can be the precursor for sexually motivated murders. If I were the Morcombes I'd want to sue the individuals whose disastrous decisions allowed such a dangerous man free to murder their beloved son.
@@caninecurry5823 What is your problem? They're not trying to make themselves sound important or something - they're just expressing how this strikes a personal chord for them because they are Australian. Which makes perfect sense - Australians likely all know about this story and have heard a lot about it for many years, whereas I as an American am just learning about the story from this video.
I am Australian. Daniels case forever changed Australia. His parents were nominated as Australians of the Year for the foundation they created in his name which educates and protects children. They are truly beautiful souls who made fhe most of being heart broken.
Australia's court system has always been a bit light. Murderers, pedophiles, terrorists get pretty light sentences unless high profile or corrupt cops are involved. It's weird because they will give high sentences for low level crime but seem pretty lenient with horrifying crimes. RIP Daniel another victim of a poor legal system and circumstance. You don't even need a expensive lawyer, and these bastards gave him 1 year sentence for child molestation. Anyone who commits such vile acts are obviously capable of much worse in some cases they can't control. Even 20 years is too light these people need to be castrated and locked until further notice, mess with someone's child expect the worst.
My sister used to work for the Missing Persons unit and she had a lot to do with the Morcombes, the parents are so lovely. When I met them at a church service at a missing persons awareness day I had to use all my strength not to burst into tears just looking in their faces, there’s so much grief in their eyes. This man is a monster and Daniel was a sweet innocent boy with a loving family - thank you for covering this important case.
This case tore on Australia's heartstrings for a long time. Daniel's parent's courage & lobbying pushed for the police to act, forcing an inquest. To this day Daniel's parents & the organisation they started in Daniel's name are making a difference in child safety in Australia.
We are far too soft on criminals here in Australia and this joker is the bottom of the barrel. Denise and Bruce are amazing human beings and the Daniel Morcombe foundation is a fantastic legacy for their beautiful son. Thanks for doing this story justice, Mike. It hits pretty hard this one.
In europe too. Pedos have security measures to protect them and if they ask for a PS5, they'll get it. They should just be beaten up by other cellmates on a daily basis
The demons that walk among us are far scarier than any horror movie That poor child 😢 what a horrifying way to leave this world Prayers for his family ♡ I am glad they got closure but wish it was different
The fact that he did this kind of atrocity TWICE and was found and sentenced each times and still only served 5 years overall and was let out is absolutely wild. There’s more chances chances to get sentenced to life for jaywalking istg.
@@janetshew5028 This is not true, though. All those cases of "he got locked up forever for 1 gram of weed" is ALWAYS repeat, violent criminals who FINALLY got ARRESTED for that easy thing they found on them. They got locked up for many other things, like assault, murder, etc. It's just that they could arrest and properly investigate them because they found something easy on them to get the chance.
This case always makes me cry, not that others don't or that they are less painful, just that these parents never stopped. They were always in the public eye doing something to ensure nobody forgot about Daniel, just like they wouldn't. They were tenacious right to the end, but that meant they never got a minutes peace for all those years, which is just heart breaking.
The Morcombes were amazing and inspirational. I don't know where they got the strength. They set up the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, an organisation that educates children on personal safety.
I know what you’re saying as I find this case so upsetting. The poor kid was going to buy Xmas gifts for his family with his own money, so innocent and wholesome. I find it especially upsetting the fact that the bus went whizzing past. It seems so tragic the chain of events which led to Daniel’s death, the bus breaking down, the replacement bus not stopping, and the opportunistic predator being in the area at the crucial time. The parents are so stoic and have shown amazing poise and dignity.
Those undercover cops are absolute legends. That's gotta be the best setup to solve a cold case I've ever heard of. The inmate that poured boiling water on him too. 👍
I love and thank you Mike! I know making these videos isn’t effortless and after awhile, it does start to become more of a job than the hobby you started making these for in the first place… so please…. Just know that SOME of your fans do deeply understand the effort, time, and repetitiveness that comes with the job. But we deeply appreciate your time and effort put into the videos, don’t stop the way you used to make em and give every detail and keep us dragged in like you always have! Love you Mike!
His family is so strong and these detectives didn’t give up after they fudged the investigation initially. Disgusted by this “human” that kept and kept getting away with these crimes. Rip you beautiful boy.
I watched another video on this case a while back, and if I recall correctly, his second victim was basically left for dead. I remember wondering why his sentence was ONLY 7 years, and of that he served less than 5. Surely sentences for kidnapping, rape, and bodily injury served consecutively should have been the minimum punishment.
There’s obviously WAY bigger things to discuss about this but I’m hung up on when they were questioning the guy and the officer asks “if you had taken him, would you tell me?” I mean… literally the only answer to that is no. If you’re the kind of person who kidnaps someone, you’re not gonna be like “oh, yep”
Usually cops ask obvious questions to set a precedent for later. If you deny something, you can't claim later that you 'didn't understand' or that a question was never asked.
You didn't butcher Maroochydore, well done! 😊 Daniel's parents are to be commended for their work for missing children. Their strength is unparalleled! ❤
I remember reading the news in New Zealand when this finally got solved. This case has always stuck with me. The absolute horror and what Daniel and his family endured... I cannot fathom that pain. And to think how close they came to not getting this solved, thanks to those officers for their (eventual) relentless pursuit of this disgusting murderer. Daniels light shines on in his parents and brothers. What a wonderful family.
I don't think there are many Aussies who haven't heard about Daniel. It was huge news. My heart goes out to his family. By the way, Mike your pronunciation of Maroochydore was spot-on.
Wow, this is exactly why I struggle with this case as well. He looks so much like my son and can't help but feel really close to it.. It's awful of course without the resemblance.
Thanks for covering this story, Mike. As an Aussie from Melbourne, I'd like to request your coverage of a well known and highly controversial case from 2012 - the rape and murder of Jill Meagher.
Only case that has ever really made my blood boil. Not saying all these other cases arent on the same level or worse, Im just not normally one to be effected emotionally by hearing of the trauma of someone I didnt know existed until their murder is on the news. But to this day I still think about what happened to her and I see glimpses of the deep and dark places her husband must have went to. I will forever hope that one day in the most unlikley of events, he gets to be left alone in a room with that weak maggot
This case always breaks my heart, regardless of who’s covering it. I have four boys and I cannot imagine the absolute horror Daniel’s parents and family endured.
As an Irishmen myself the switch between the Irish and Aus accents was astonishing!! All jokes aside my eyes have been glued to the video so far!!! Can't believe I've only just found you!
This story haunted Australia for years. I was Daniels age I remember seeing the mannequin and Bruce tirelessly campaigning for information. It felt like Daniels case would never be solved. I am so glad for his parents it was solved because they would still be tirelessly searching. The boiling water was a small justice.
This happened where I live and the undercover sting was just amazing. This kids parents are amazing people too. They have done so much for the community and they help so many people. They were going to make a movie on the undercover sting but it never happened
The "Mr big" sting is well known in Canada where it is considered highly controversial as it is considered entrapment. Several high profile convictions have been thrown out over this technique. I would not be surprised if this conviction is tossed out on appeal as well. This case seems particularly egregious bc of the offer the 100k payoff for a confession.
@@DanDan-xj8ox you're right the defence did try to appeal it but the appeal was rejected and any form of further appeal or litigation has been ruled out.

Mike, I watch a lot of your videos, and find them compelling to watch, as an Australian, and as a Queenslander my self, the Daniel Morcombe case has always been a heartbreaking case, I'm glad his parents were able to finally have the truth about what happened to their son, may they find peace, But there is another case that has haunted Australia for over 50 years now that you might find interesting to cover, and that is the case of the missing Beaumont children who disappeared on Australia Day in 1966 in Adelaide, and who to this day have never been found
Daniel's parents were absolutely relentless and not just about their son - but about the safety of all children.
I have so much respect for them.
Sadly it isn't always this easy. But it would be a much better world if this could be done
couldn't agree more!!🙄
The one that makes my blood boil is the “they probably ran away” comment we hear all the time in true crime.
When they're caught they should be put away and throw away the key...yet the courts are more intent on punishing more for drugs charges than for harming children...they will never change and should be locked up
I know what you mean. I watch the same crime by anyone who covers it and he always has some detail no one else mentioned.

The laws in your country are abominable
@@smartyjonez5470 Many countries do not punish violent behavior enough but in the US we hand out some absurdly long sentences for relatively minor infractions. Both things can be true.
@@CAHSR2020 let me guess. You think most people in American prisons are either there for drugs or non violent crimes, right ?
@@smartyjonez5470 Maybe you should respond to what I actually said instead of what you presume I might say.
YEAH if the sexual assault sentences weren't so INSULTINGLY low then so many kids would have been saved.
@@neofromthewarnerbrothersic145 true - I am just saying he has no regrets about what he did - just sad he got caught.
That’s a good start but not nearly enough - I hope he has to look over his shoulder constantly.
Because the system is run by pedos and human traffickers.
Because Australia is socialist hell hole. And is decaying.
Same here...
All my prayers go to Daniel’s family…
chemical castration is temporary. Remove it all.
So again, if you get mad that my comment is that MORE scrutiny should be put on people during a fair trial then I think you're the weird one)
It's not right to say that everyone cannot be rehabilitated, the studies that say this are flawed.
Sadly, the problem is between their ears, not between their legs. One and done is the only solutiion!! Prayers to protect the children.
@@bec7080 You're talking about two different charges.
RIP Daniel.
I love that after he testified at the inquest, he got sat next to an undercover cop on a long cross country flight back to Perth. Bravo, just bravo.
The 6yo boy he left in that boot had injuries so bad the people who found him thought he'd been hit by a car. It broke my heart when I read that.

I absolutely cannot believe that after that and the first incident he was in and out of jail within 4 years... it is so wrong. If he was more accurately sentenced, then this whole thing never would have even happened to Daniel. So heartbreaking. I don't think there is any reform of child rapists. Daniel is the reason you can call reverse anywhere on any phone or pay phone to call your parents to get home safe, he is the reason you can hop on a bus under 18 without the fare if you have no money, taxi drivers will usually do the same. A lot of things changed after this case.
Especially with them knowing predators are around.

The "justice" system failed the children once again. Let the guy out in one year and think he would never do it again? Usually, predators end up killing little children. Judges should be held accountable.

I'd suspect that someone who gives such a short sentence might be that way inclined too.
Australia has a sort of phobia about imposing harsh sentences on pretty much anyone. It's more than a little disturbing.

They are still working hard to help victims of crimes like this.
Honestly they should abolish any kind of time limit to report someone missing when it comes to kids and teenagers alike😢
20 years doesn't seem like nearly enough. I'm glad to hear he's having a hard time in prison. I hope it gets harder every single day.

The first offense for sexually assaulting anyone, child or adult, should mean a life sentence.
or castration.
Source? I believe your statement on jail time is false.

Flawed??? Understatement
Anyone convicted of intentionally harming a child should spend the rest of their life in prison.
Ordinary prisoners seem to have a general rule of doing what the formal justice system won't, in these cases, which is good.
I don't think the taxpayers should have to pay for the survival and upkeep of someone like that. A tight noose and a short drop seems more appropriate for anyone who would intentionally do that to a child.
place pedos into gen-pop and let the inmates handle it. That's justice served.
Don't be so silly.
If only they had a bag of cannabis, they'd still be in prison!
The departments we pay for are all corrupt beyond repair.
Australia is way more lenient than US
As an Aussie/Queensland school teacher who has met Bruce & Denise Morcombe (Daniel’s parents), this case felt a little too close to home.
❤
Amen! We are SICK of the evil monsters that hurt children & the judges that only give them a slap on the wrist!
@@rebeccagable9629 that tells you exactly what kind of people these judges are. It's a huge problem across the world. Court systems treating dirty sick pedos lightly because the system is set up an drunk by pedos or pedo sympathisers. They dont want to jail the people who supply their own sick kicks.
its repulsive i DONT UNDERSTAND
Best comment ! It's a proven fact that these sexual predators can not change their sick desires ....until they are too old to move or dead
Thanks for talking about it ❤️
There is a murdered boy from Perth of a similar age and they think Cowan also got him as he was living here at the time.
Never heard about this case till now, and my blood is boiling.
Why his murderer wasn't jailed for life after the first "attack'' on a 6 year old I have NO IDEA!
His injuries were so bad, cops thought he'd been hit by a car.
I'm sick of this.
" as an Australian" oh jeeze, you know someones pretentious when they start out with that ol cliche.

The fact that he did this kind of atrocity TWICE and was found and sentenced each times and still only served 5 years overall and was let out is absolutely wild. There’s more chances chances to get sentenced to life for jaywalking istg.

I know what you’re saying as I find this case so upsetting. The poor kid was going to buy Xmas gifts for his family with his own money, so innocent and wholesome. I find it especially upsetting the fact that the bus went whizzing past.
Because it is Australia and they are modern and liberal. Puke. And the cops are lazy.
Australian sentencing is a joke
@@nelliemilne1724 have you seen the US justice system??
People thought he was hit by car, his injuries were so serious. :( I just don't understand that 7 year sentence.
He raped another boy and left him in a car boot with bricks piled on top
There’s obviously WAY bigger things to discuss about this but I’m hung up on when they were questioning the guy and the officer asks “if you had taken him, would you tell me?”
I mean… literally the only answer to that is no. If you’re the kind of person who kidnaps someone, you’re not gonna be like “oh, yep”
Usually cops ask obvious questions to set a precedent for later. If you deny something, you can't claim later that you 'didn't understand' or that a question was never asked.
