@@Silver77cyn Actually, if all prophets were false, then Jesus wouldn't have bothered telling us how to tell the difference in His Sermon on the Mount. ("Ye shall know them by their fruits.") Without prophets, there would be no scripture, including the Bible. That said, people of faith are supposed to have the gift of "discernment" (the ability to tell truth from error), which is a gift of the Holy Spirit. The lack of it, shows a lack of true faith (which is a belief in TRUTH, not nonsensical dogmatic absurdities).

I lost a 25 year friendship with someone who was a lapsed Catholic when I met him. But for the last 5 years of our friendship, he fell into the Evangelical world, and almost like magic, fell into the world of conspiracy theories as well before tripping down the QAnon rabbit hole. I couldn't take listening to it anymore, so we became more and more distant until we just lost contact with each other. His personalty change during that time was heartbreaking.

I've watched the same thing happen to friends and family who grew up in cults and different evangelical sects, they get out, and then fifteen or twenty years later like clockwork they just fall into a slightly different one and convince themselves it isn't the same because of some slight difference in teaching. It's almost like they get tired of having to think for themselves and get nostalgic for the toxic environment that almost killed them when they were younger, so they return to it. Maddening.

Many of us have lost people like that. The common thread is that they have suffered in life and been stepped on so much that anything that offers them the hope of power captures their mind completely. Like any dopamine hit, religion and thoughts of conquering the "bad people" makes them feel bullet proof when they really lean into it. Like any drug, the amount and purity of the thing they are using escalates until they can no longer function and they hit rock bottom. At that point they'll either die or pull themselves back into the real world. In the meantime there's nothing anyone can do for them except try to prevent them from hurting themselves and ruining the lives of everyone around them.

Back in the latter part of 2020, my pastor and I had a discussion about T****, and I was wondering how so many Christians could consider him one of them when he never embodied any of the faith in his words, attitudes and actions. Pastor, who has a true heart for poor people and immigrants, said that he had the same questions. Most of the time, Pastor concentrates on trying to guide us to being better Christians (I often describe my segment of the faith as the one whose members show up at your house with hotdish and a chainsaw right after that tornado dropped a tree on your roof!)...but Trump had disturbed him for so long that he could no longer keep silent, at least in private conversation. As an atheist who was forced to go to church every Sunday come hell or high water until the day I turned 18, I can say that churches WERE better when they were apolitical than they are now. When I was a kid in Sunday school we were taught that we were the children of God and that God is love. If the church erred in any direction, it was in it's unwavering devotion to ending the Vietnam war, but nearly all churches were anti-war when I was a kid in the 60s and 70s. The straw that broke the whole "church's camel's back" for my son was that the junior high and high school kids were being called *"Warriors for Christ,"* which TOTALLY ticked us both OFF! Neither of us approved of the whole "War on Terror." One can't just declare war against a feeling, for Pete's sake! It's like declaring war on _ennui,_ it just can't be done! The eventual outcome of all the death, destruction and damage of the last 20 years has been sickening, and *predictable!* Every other country who has declared war on Afghanistan for CENTURIES has found it to be a hopeless money pit where nothing is ever accomplished.

They pander to their congregation just like Fox News or Newsmax etc. The ppl want to hear a specific thing and without those ppl they have no job. They give them what they want to hear. It turns into this cyclone of beliefs. Even if you don’t buy into a thought 100% chances are you will still get swept up in the rhetoric.

      Sounds like politics
Christ refused the religion of politics - aka false gods -
Christians as the Romans Saw Them - Robert L Wilken 1936
He wrote many books on early Christians.
This one covers how Roman politicians, scholars, etc., saw Christians within the first 300 years of Christ. It cites numerous Roman & few Greek writers of the age.
Romans discussed in great detail & confusion, as to why & how Christians in no way would serve their govts. Christians did not hold any office, wave their flags, attend their ceremonies, be employed, vote, assume any responsibilities at all for the duties of the city under govt.
They did not glorify the false religious state of men, serve in their militaries or agents of the state. They didn't even recognize Roman law as the laws they should follow. They were known for their anti govt sedition.
They were seen as "sectarian", because govt IS a public religion & Christians were the first to "privatize" religion.
Christians subverted govt life & undermined foundations in which societies operated, by human false gods.
      How?
Christians set up a single divine ruler, which was now seen as a rival & threat to a human emperor, who could now fall, simply because people walked away from serving the violent religion of mortal rule. Christ could reign in the hearts of people who left the mortal rules of political religion & did not see the men in govt as their rule makers.
Romans knew political structure was a sacred religious structure of law makers, aka gods, which deserved absolute obedience & celebration.
Shame on any pastor calling themselves Christian who misses this obvious story all through the Bible.
No where will you find Christ teaching people to get involved with the empire.
Matthew was called out of tax collecting. The centurion stated twice he was not worthy of Christ's help because he was a man of govt. 2nd Samuel goes into the sin & curses of asking for mortal kings. It's literally all over the Bible.

Reminds me of that poster on Agent Muller's office in the X-files show. A photo of a UFO with the caption " I want to believe". Which is something I would have a serious problem with. It should be " I should be skeptical. I should be think before I believe something. It seems agent Muller wants throw his sense of reason or intellect out the window for a blind belief in something unreal. Not much different from the religious believers and new agers. I could see an evangelical with a poster of Jesus Christ or god with the same motto" I want to believe".
Not to question anything but simply to believe.

I remember when Christianity was about love and tolerance. I was very young then. That iteration of the Church died long ago, in my childhood, permanently coopted by snake oil salesmen, political whackadoodles and nonsensical culture wars.

No offense but Christianity has never just been sunshine and rainbows. It has caused alot of havoc since its inception. Unless you just mean how it was better before where you grew up.

Turin Mortis Oh, I'm so sorry to hear of your experience, which so closely mirrors mine in the phony Protestant Presbyterian church of the mid-1970s. The unspoken disapproval on all levels against a young person growing up into adulthood from the ages of 16 through 21 was so hard to understand at that time, yet so easy to understand now as the disgusting manipulation for what it was back then. So much sub-conscious garbage stuffed into my brain back then.....

lol Christianity was never about "love and tolerance". Boomer hippies in the 70s who called themselves Jesus Freaks gave us that image
