Doug, as an epileptic, and as one of the people that posted about the brief red and green flashing strobe lights in one of your Christmas videos to give caution to other people with epilepsy, I greatly appreciate you giving that warning about the strobe lights in this video! THANK YOU, WITH TRUE SINCERITY!
Doug is surprised 20th Century Fox didn't support this movie, but I remind you it was the same studio that thought Star Wars and Deadpool were going to be failures
I can understand thinking Deadpool would be a failure, granted how different it is from other Superhero movies. But Star Wars? It's already an established franchise.
Oh my god! YES I always wanted to know the name of this movie as a child.. I saw it only one time and never again. I really thought it was my imagination.
Making this movie even more impressive, none of Alex Winters's lines in this movie were voice over. They were all done while he was in the makeup. He talks about it in an issue of Fangoria magazine. It's why there's constantly spit/drool running out of his mouth, that isn't an effect, that's Alex's own spit.
Thank you Nostalgia Critic for solving a mystery for me that I've suffered through since childhood. Saw bits of this movie playing in the background while I was at a neighbors house 25 years ago. Every now and then it would pop back into my head throughout the years and would always bug me that I never knew the name of it and didn't quite know how to search for it (Can't believe that after all of this time the title was so simple). All I could remember was it had something to do with a hunchback type character and a character with a sock for a head. So again, thank you for solving this long-standing mystery for me! and now that I realize how many stars are in it (and again, how obvious the title is) I'm quite embarrassed it took me his long to find it again. Now I just gotta figure out that other movie I remember seeing as a child where (from what my brain can retain 20 years after seeing it as a kid) an Artist Formerly known as Prince type character going on a killing spree......
@@baneh1329 I remember the very end of the film. Every time I caught it as a kid, it'd be right at the end. And I have been wondering for he longest time what the name of this movie was.

Man I remember watching this on HBO Family back in September of 2005. I was waiting for Looney Tunes: Back In Action to come up next so I watched this movie to let time fly. And then I caught it again in 2018 on UA-cam. The one thing I remembered about this movie as a kid was Mr. T in a dress with a long beard.
Too right. I saw it as an adult and still thought that I had imagined it because I couldn't find it anywhere. Back in the day, this movie stayed on Showtime which is where I saw it.
I saw this several times as a teen in the 90s. When you have satellite tv with 50+ movie channels playing movies 24/7, I could usually find obscure bombs like this in constant rotation. This is an all around enjoyable af movie.
I remember as a kid, Freaked was on HBO all the time. So I was lucky enough to enjoy this gem multiple times. I didn't know that it wasn't that well known till now.
This is the first review I’ve watched of yours since my father passed away back in January. I remember in 2008 or 2009 we were at Target and he was telling me about a really funny guy on UA-cam that did a review of Batman and Robin. We used to watch the Nostalgia Critic until we didn’t have anymore reviews we hadn’t yet seen, every time we found a new review we’d end up binging a bunch of them and laughing together. Another hidden gem my father showed me on UA-cam when I was real young was this movie. We had to watch Freaked split into several parts, each one probably being no more than 10 minutes long. It was cool seeing two of the funniest things he’s shown me merge into one video. His favorite quote from this movie was from after Elijah blasted the committee with the Zygrot 24. “That’s one big shoe”. I apologize for the ramble, I just wanted to write a little something about what this video kept reminding me of.
I don't know what took longer me searching for this movie from my childhood or Doug Walker finally finding out about it and reviewing this masterpiece.
For YEARS I've remembered exactly two things about this movie that I'd only seen once while growing up: the Eye Guy Security things and everyone dressing like a milkman to try and get away. And UA-cam suggested this video to me just now.
Same with me. I was raised in a Pentecostal Church, who low-key believe everything in the world is evil unless it has to do with Christ, so I missed out/ mentally blanked out on the 90s & don't really remember it having any particular, distinct identity, until I look back at stuff from that era & just go "what the hell?"
@Caleb Mayfield Sort of. We also never really had cable/ satellite when that really started becoming common after 2000 either, so even when I was paying closer attention, I never really got to see much of the shows kids in my generation grew up with either. The one thing I saw a heck of a lot of was Pokemon, but they put out virtually the entire first season of the show on VHS. Back in the 90s, though, I was a bit more oblivious & didn't really know what, if anything, that I was missing. I remember only having a vague idea of what Power Rangers was for example, & when the other kids wanted to play that on the playground, I just faked knowing what I was doing. Lol
I still remember the first time I ever saw this movie as a kid. I went over to my neighbor's house to hang out and his uncle was watching it on TV. It was so bizarre and hilarious that I couldn't pull myself away.
The film is like Weird Al found a metal album written by Salvador Dali, got high, and made a movie out of it. I remember seeing this as a very, very young kid on MTV. I didn't comprehend what I was looking at, but I found it really funny. I'm glad I could revisit this film as an adult and have pretty much the same reaction I did before.
This movie is definitely worth the watch but beware if your brain is not ready it will shut down explode spontaneously combust and then re-create a whole new universe from papeclips and marshmallows
I remember watching this on HBO at my Grandma's house as a kid. I use to wish he would be in full monster mode for the whole movie because it looked so awesome at the end.
I'd argue it DOES have heart. The same that Shrek and Amazing World of Gumball have. By embracing it's weirdness and being about a selfish child star becoming a freak and joining a group of freaks, it has a nice message of "you ARE a freak! Embrace it!
I saw this film when it came out on rental in the UK in around 1995 only because my English teacher recommended it to me, I would have been 15 at the time. She turned to me mid lesson and said “I watched this film at the weekend and it made me think of you!” And she was right! I’ve loved it ever since! ADD: I have the special edition DVD, original rental VHS and comic! I didn’t know how rare it was!
In UK, this used to come on Sky Movies in the 90s, I recorded it on VHS and used to watch the film everyday as a kid and used to draw the characters and everything. It was a favourite of mine for a good while!

I remember seeing this utter madness on late-night HBO in the mid-late 90's, I guess shortly after it was released, and while it's not always in mind I have NEVER forgotten it.
My friends and I were huge Idiot Box fans and were some of the few people that saw this when it first came out. It was our little hidden gem that we had to show everyone we met. Still now almost 30 years later we still quote it at each other constantly and I am one of the proud owners of it on DVD.
@@ChannelAwesome They really did, it's a shame we practically never see special effects artistry in films like this anymore, what with CGI and everything... 😶
I remember catching the end of this movie when it was actually shown on Tv over here one evening and I loved it . its so off the wall insanity it was brilliant. just wish it was easier to obtain
I remember watching this when I was a kid. I’m glad someone else is talking about it, because it was beginning to feel like this was just a figment of my young imagination.
I thought this movie was a fever dream I had as a kid. I'd bring it up and none had seen it heard it. Then I saw it on UA-cam and relived one of the strangest film experiences of my life. I absolutely love this movie.
That's where I watched it too. I just assumed that it was a movie people forgot about. Had no idea it was purposefully sabotaged until looking into it a few years back.
I was lucky enough to catch this on HBO back in 1995 when I stayed home sick from school one day and it blew me away! And then I din’t hear about it again for almost 25 years, lol. I’m glad it’s finally getting the recognition it deserves.
"Disney owns Fox now, why not take advantage of a goldmine that's waiting to be discovered and re-release it on Blu-ray or maybe Disney+." I think even Disney has it's limits.
I LOVED this movie as a kid. I recorded it on vhs from HBO. One of my favorite parts was when the plane exploded. It was shot as if you thought they were on it. So much humor in this one
The real reason it was hidden was because Disney wants and back then wanted a more family friendly tone for their films especially their films for Disney+ and other streaming services. Now back then they took one look at this weird Monkeyboneish bill and ted sequel kind of and said we don't want to be associated with this so they didn't advertise for it. Now Disney takes one good look at this film and says the same exact thing as before which is why this and many others don't get the attention they deserve because Disney doesn't want to have some dark movies and shows like this associated with the new image they created.
As a little baby boy I hired this and loved the hell out of it. Though in my country I think it was known as Freak Show. It was such a thrill and this hit me in the nostalgia.
I FORGOT ABOUT THIS MOVIE!! I saw the thumbnail and thought, "Wait. Is that the movie I'm thinking of? The one with 'Bob Villa' and the kid that gets turned into a freak? That movie was WEIRD." I remember seeing this with my mom about 19/20 years ago and laughing at how bizarre it was and we quoted the Bob Villa moments for YEARS. Thank you for reminding me of this. This movie really does deserve more attention.
One of my favorite movies of all time. For a while I actually thought this movie didn't exist. I just remembered some scenes and thought they were part of a weird fever dream I might have had when I was a kid. It wasn't until I came across it on youtube that I realized "No way, that was real?!?!"
I saw this in 1994 and have judged friends on how they liked this movie. Whilst describing this to a new friend, he said, "you had me at Randy Quaid as a mad scientist." Another insane movie is 1989's "Meet the Hollowheads," with Juliette Lewis, John Glover, Richard Portnow, Joshua John Miller, Anne Ramsey, and Bobcat Goldthwait.
I saw this because my boyfriend showed it to me, in first glance I wasn’t excited to watch it but as we did I found myself genuinely enjoying the film. It’s so weird and very funny. I recommend it
Also Ben 10 Race Against Time To think of this movie was a bigger hit Alex Winter could have been like Ron Howard, a former comedy actor who makes these big movies but no the execs had to fuck up Freaked’s release
You only now found this movie? As a kid in the early 90's I had a VHS simply labeled "Freaks". ME and my friends watched this movie over and over. It can be seen on youtube, I watched it again a few months ago
My friend and I watched this movie back when it came out and laughed our asses off. It was just one of those movies that totally went under the radar and as a result it produced a ton of inside jokes only the two of us were in on. It’s too good of a film though, and it’s time the rest of the world learns about this wickedly, weird classic comedy.
This film gave me one of my favorite random quotes of all time; "Hey! I just took a s#!t that's the spitting image of Kim Basinger!" "Kim Basinger?! I don't know...Maybe Winona Ryder, buuutt..."
You know Doug or Mr. Walker I'd love to see more of this freak show cinema it's cool, innovative, and captivating. Please do more my good sir. You have my support
Could you please talk about the DAV (Disabled American Veterans)? My dad is the Commander for our chapter in Albemarle, NC. They take veterans to their doctor appointments will their DAV van and don’t get any sort of support from the government. Everything it takes to take care of the van is funded by only donations and they really need them.
For anyone who hasn't seen the movie there is totally, unequivocally, absolutely no video of the full film currently on youtube, so don't even try to type Freaked 1993, the full movie definitely won't show up. And it certainly can't be downloaded via any youtube MP3/MP4 converter site, so donn't even try. Also, Critic, if you're looking for bizarre movies you seriously need to do review 1992's Mom and Dad Save the World which is a bizarre and hilarious 80s scifi comedy with a surprisingly star studded cast (Jon Lovitz, Wallace Shawn, Teri Garr, Jeffery Jones, Eric Idle), and the 1953 film The Five Thousand Fingers of Dr. T which is a live action musical actually written by Dr Seuss himself
The creature effects and prosthetics were from "Screaming Mad" George who did the movie effects of 'Society' (1989) and the cockroach scene from 'Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master.'
Plus he did that live-action Guyver movie and the original Tales from the Hood while the director, Alex Winter, directed Ben 10 Race Against Time AND Ben 10 Alien Swarm. Crazy filmographies, huh?
I have a distinct memory of being a friend's house when I was about 6 years old and walking into the living room where his parents were watching this movie. It was the scene where the main cast was being transformed. It scared the living shit out of me and I have never been okay with body horror since then. They had told me earlier that they had rented Mel Gibson's "The Man Without a Face" so for years I had thought that that was this film. People were so confused why I was so terrified of the "guy with half a monster face."
Only Doug could do double the usual amount of advertisements and turn it into something that you aren't just not upset about, but actively enjoy watching.

My friends and I were huge Idiot Box fans and were some of the few people that saw this when it first came out. It was our little hidden gem that we had to show everyone we met. Still now almost 30 years later we still quote it at each other constantly and I am one of the proud owners of it on DVD.
One of the most underrated comedies I've ever watched.
I can only imagine the nightmares I would’ve had if I’d seen this as a kid, given I’m afraid to go to sleep now.
Thanks for introducing this to us, Doug! That makeup and special effects is unreal, seriously impressive
Glad you enjoyed it! The makeup and effects departments did such an amazing job on this!
@@ChannelAwesome They really did, it's a shame we practically never see special effects artistry in films like this anymore, what with CGI and everything... 😶
This is one of those movies I wanna see you and Rob react to on first viewing.
Fun fact: The film's budget was $12 million, most of which went toward the film's visual effects.
money well spent. they spend more today on uninteresting CGI.
Just looking at it, I can buy that.
How dare they put the money on screen! Luckily modern filmmakers have Adam Sandler and J. J. Abrams to learn from.
Not really a fun fact if it’s mentioned in the video. Watch the whole thing before commenting 😂
@@lewiskazinsky7334 Doug didn’t say about what the budget was primarily spent on. He only said it had a budget of 12 million.
I remember catching the end of this movie when it was actually shown on Tv over here one evening and I loved it . its so off the wall insanity it was brilliant. just wish it was easier to obtain
Dude ever since cinemassacre did a review I’ve been waiting for it to get more attention, it’s so good
@Caleb Mayfield
No I think he maybe wasn't aware of it until they reviewed it
This movie was on HBO so much in the 90's that I still have dialogue memorized and I haven't seen it in over 20 years.
Same.
I loved this movie as a kid. It was so weird and out there, 12 year old me would try to catch it every time it came in cable.
Sees thumbnail: well I didn’t really need to sleep anyway
I watched on basic cable a few times. I think of macaroons without laughing my ass off
The full movie is on UA-cam, posted multiple times by multiple users. Enjoy this absolute hidden gem.
I thank Showtime for allowing me to see this back in the mid 90's as a kid. It sucks that it's been so hard to find.
Good times. I'm still amazing my mom and grandma even allowed me to watch it as a kid.
It's on UA-cam. Took like 2 seconds to find.
Same . I remember when my cousin showed me this movie. Its soo weird I couldn't help but love it.
I'm fortunate enough to have this movie as a part of my childhood too lol.
I still remember when this used to come on HBO religiously. And that ending credits song SLAPS!!! 🔥
That's where I watched it too. I just assumed that it was a movie people forgot about. Had no idea it was purposefully sabotaged until looking into it a few years back.
Man! I bet that this guy would be able to make a comedy with H.P. Lovecraft eldritchian horror!
ikr.
Aye, just imagine what the Egro-Nay Oxer-Bay from Re-animator would look like with these effects!
I was lucky enough to catch this on HBO back in 1995 when I stayed home sick from school one day and it blew me away! And then I din’t hear about it again for almost 25 years, lol. I’m glad it’s finally getting the recognition it deserves.
"Disney owns Fox now, why not take advantage of a goldmine that's waiting to be discovered and re-release it on Blu-ray or maybe Disney+."
I think even Disney has it's limits.
Seeing how Kung-POW Enter The Fist is on the Star section of Disney+ I have a feeling Disney will eventually put this on there
NOT Even Disney would allow this on Disney+ it might scare some kids
@@moxxiedemongamer3019 Exactly. I don’t think it is bad, but the grossness out paces the funniness.
@@moxxiedemongamer3019 They’d put it on Star
That's true. No doubt this'll be avaible...on Star +
I LOVED this movie as a kid. I recorded it on vhs from HBO. One of my favorite parts was when the plane exploded. It was shot as if you thought they were on it. So much humor in this one
The thumbnail shows that this is gonna be a *interesting* film
Same.
ikr.
Great choice this week! I remember seeing this at like 1 AM on TNT, back when TNT played weird 80s/90s era movies at night. Gold.
I think i'm more concerned as to why there's a dog's head on a human being i'd love to know about that thing's backstory!
I saw this movie as a kid because my aunt recorded me a copy on VHS. Have and always will love this film
Doug: "This episode is brought to you by E.E.S. Everything Except Stamps."
I tried to make my family watch it, they said no because it was weird but then again I like to torture people with weird movies.
That weirdly awesome movie you stumbled upon on HBO in the 90's.
That’s how I seen it as a kid.
I remember telling kids at school how funny this was but no one ever seen it
One of my favorite movies of all time.
Whilst describing this to a new friend, he said, "you had me at Randy Quaid as a mad scientist."
Another insane movie is 1989's "Meet the Hollowheads," with Juliette Lewis, John Glover, Richard Portnow, Joshua John Miller, Anne Ramsey, and Bobcat Goldthwait.
Wow this takes me back, this movie made everyone who saw it a little weirder.
"Gentlemen, you are looking at Disney's dead ass!"
SECONDS AGO!? I JUST RANDOMLY CHECK UA-cam!
UA-cam -> search -> Freaked 1993
I saw this because my boyfriend showed it to me, in first glance I wasn’t excited to watch it but as we did I found myself genuinely enjoying the film. It’s so weird and very funny. I recommend it
From the mind who would later bring you the Smosh movie (I am not joking)
Smosh? As in Food War Smosh? Stuck in the toilet?
@@criminallyautistic8372 yeah.
Also Ben 10 Race Against Time
To think of this movie was a bigger hit Alex Winter could have been like Ron Howard, a former comedy actor who makes these big movies but no the execs had to fuck up Freaked’s release
The effects in this movie at least a few of them are done by Screaming Mad George and Steve Johnson, Steve was married to Linnea Quigley.
You only now found this movie? As a kid in the early 90's I had a VHS simply labeled "Freaks". ME and my friends watched this movie over and over. It can be seen on youtube, I watched it again a few months ago
Freaks is a totally different movie than Freaked.
This movie is a classic. Great gags and makeup and Alex is so damn good! We would do Randy Quad quotes all the time. "Styrofoam cup..."
Omg, thanks! I thought this movie was a delirium. None of my friends had a memory of it.
These thumbnails kill me everytime.
Dude, I literally watched this movie last night. What are the odds?
Not a math person, but probably pretty high
I used to love this movie as a kid, but I never realized Keanu Reeves was in it.
He went uncredited for some reason.
Been waiting years for him to do this movie :)
Only Doug could do double the usual amount of advertisements and turn it into something that you aren't just not upset about, but actively enjoy watching.
