Pee-wee Herman is a comedy character created and portrayed by the American comedian Paul Reubens. He starred in films and television series during the 1980s. The childlike Pee-wee Herman character developed as a stage act that quickly led to an HBO special in 1981. As the stage performance gained further popularity, Reubens took the character to motion picture with Pee-wee's Big Adventure in 1985. This paved the way for Pee-wee's Playhouse, an Emmy Award-winning children's series that ran on CBS from 1986 to 1991. Another film, Big Top Pee-wee, was released in 1988.

Fun Fact from Pee-wee's Big Adventure: Paul Reubens said that he, Phil Hartman, and Michael Varhol had never written a screenplay prior to this film. They purchased a book by Syd Field on how to write screenplays and did exactly what the book said. As a result, this movie is sometimes used in screenwriting classes because it fits the screenwriting paradigm perfectly - the film is 90 minutes long and the script is 90 pages long. The first act ends at Page 30 / 30-minute mark, the second act ends at Page 60 / 60-minute mark, etc.

Another Fun Fact from Pee-wee's Big Adventure: Tim Burton and Paul Reubens asked Danny Elfman as composer because Reubens was a big fan of Oingo Boingo, of which Elfman was lead singer and songwriter, and Burton agreed after attending some concerts. Elfman was originally apprehensive, having no formal music training, and declined the offer, but his manager told him to tell Burton that himself. Elfman gave Burton a ring, but at the last moment, he changed his mind and decided to accept the job. He was assisted by Boingo guitarist Steve Bartek as orchestrator. Elfman later said that hearing his music performed by an orchestra for the first time was one of the most thrilling experiences of his life.

The first movie was originally pitched as a loose remake of Paul Reubens' favorite film, Pollyanna. While writing the original draft, he noticed how everyone at Warner Bros. was getting around by bicycle and requested his own. He received a spiffy, heavily-accessorized one, inspiring him to overhaul the original plot and write a new story around the bike (which would eventually become a loose remake of a different film, Bicycle Thieves). Meanwhile, the Pollyanna influence would be revisited in the indirect sequel Big Top Pee-wee.

A Interesting Fun Fact from Pee-wee's Big Adventure: The Drive-in sequence was filmed at the Studio Drive In, formerly located in Culver City CA. The Studio was built in the 1930s, and was the first Drive-in Theatre constructed in California. It served as a set for several films, including Grease (1978). Fun Fact: Paul Reubens was originally meant to voice the title character of that old cartoon I remember watching when I was a kid “The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack”, but for some unknown reason he never showed up to any of the recording sessions. When this happened, creator Thurop Van Orman ended up voicing the character (and his Flapjack voice is what he actually sounds like).
As much as I enjoyed Van Orman, I actually would have wanted Reubens to voice the character instead because Flapjack is meant to be an inspiration of Pee-Wee, and Reubens would have been absolutely perfect in giving the character the same child like energy, positivity, cheerfulness, and naivety Orman had given.
RIP Paul Reubens, this was such a nice tribute to one of the best comedians of all time. I hope you guys can do tribute videos to Steve Harwell, Arleen Sorkin, and Johnny Hardwick with Shrek, Batman, and King of the Hill next.

Big Top Pee-Wee would have originally had closer ties to Pee-wee's Big Adventure. The reason Pee-Wee ran away to a rural town was because he had become a celebrity after the spy movie from the end of the first film was released and wanted to escape his fans. This was removed due to the Channel Hop between the two films.

Your first explanation for why Pee-Wee’s voice is dubbed in his cameo, that’s what I always assumed was the reason.
That his normal voice was too ridiculous and they couldnt re-cast him, so they dub him with an equally distracting voice.
Also notice how he keeps looking at the camera, mouthing the other actor’s lines as they say them and generally just being awkward on camera.
That small scene is so hilarious because there’s a whole micro-subplot going on in the background thats never explained but you can piece it together using context clues.

Another Fun Fact from Big Top Pee-wee: The writers imagined a back story to connect this film to Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985): Pee Wee had become famous, due to the "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" feature film (starring James Brolin and Morgan Fairchild), inspired by his adventure. Pee Wee had a lot of girls flock over him, when he became a Frank Sinatra-like singer. But, Pee Wee had found fame too much and decided to fly away and live a quiet normal life as a farmer in an old folks' community.

I haven’t seen the Netflix movie yet but I have seen the other two movies several times. I think I will certainly look the other one up. Paul Rubens was truly an amazing person and he always made me smile and laugh a lot! I am glad to know that he had such an amazing fanbase. His recent passing is indeed a terrible shame. I hope that he rests in peace. I missed a few of your videos because of a family trip, but now I’m working on catching up. I’m glad to see you are back in your main studio and you’re no longer sick. Your videos are always amazing. Thank you for doing this wonderful tribute to Paul Rubens and his best known character and movie franchise!

Fun Fact: Due to Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985) and this being produced by different studios (Warner Brothers for "Adventure," Paramount for this one), Danny Elfman's famous score for the earlier film could not be reused, so he had to compose a new score for this one.

Another Fun Fact from Pee-wee's Big Adventure: When Pee-wee is at the pet shop, he frees a chimpanzee first then enlists his help (he even tells the chimp, "you can help me!"). Pee-wee is also afraid of the snakes and is very reluctant to save them, which he does but he screams then passes out after doing so. In reality, Tim Burton has a phobia of chimpanzees.

Thank you Mr Reubens for all the work you put into entertaining generations of audiences. . I grew up in the 90s. Other then occasional pop ups on tv, I didn't get to see a lot your movies and material but I remember summer of 2006 when adult swim played episodes of the pee wee Herman show at night. I got to watch a lot of episodes and catch up. That was a tough year for me but watching your show made hard times a little softer for me.

Tim Burton turned down the chance to direct *Big Top Pee Wee* as he was transitioning from completing Beetlejuice (1988) to beginning pre-production on Batman (1989). He worked with Paul Reubens again on Batman Returns (1992) and The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993).

He reminds me a lot of SpongeBob. They both appealed to kids and adults that made them cult classics. However, if both done wrong, they can be done REALLY wrong. It’s the balance that makes them classics, but is such a tight rope to talk that even the writers sometimes mess them up.

Another Fun Fact from Pee-wee's Big Adventure: Pee-Wee plays a hotel desk clerk as his debut acting role in the movie within the movie. Paul Reubens previously played a similar role as a hotel desk clerk in Cheech and Chong's Next Movie (1980), one of Reubens' first film roles. Also, in the Cheech & Chong film, "Tequila" by The Champs was being played as Cheech & Chong are redecorating the van.

He was never really "cancelled." He appeared in movies throughout the '90s, including Matilda and Dunston Checks In, and revived the Pee-wee character in the '00s, successfully bringing the Pee-wee Herman show to Broadway and making a third movie for Netflix. All that really happened because of his arrest in '91 that CBS decided not to air reruns of Playhouse. Hell, just five years after the fact, MGM sold a 16-volume VHS of Playhouse, along with the Christmas special. I still have those tapes.

Yeah, like the guy above said, he basically cancelled himself. It was a self-imposed break from showbiz.
He showed up to the MTV Movie Awards months after the incident in 1991 and he got a standing ovation. The vast majority of the public was on his side, aside from the harmless ribbing he got

Actually, it was the way they used the Boom Lighting and reflecting screens to brighten his face up while in make up. I know that because that is practiced still today on almost every movie and show I work in in the variety of roles I've played. Even my role as the main vampire in NOS4A2 they did that for the outside and studio sets. That is just one of many examples in my 15 years being a performing artist/Actor in SAG-AFTRA.

Another Fun Fact from Pee-wee's Big Adventure: This was actually the second screenplay Paul Reubens wrote for a feature film adaptation. The first had Pee-Wee's Playhouse friends (from his stage shows) on a road trip. Even though this was a completely different script, it also used the title "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure". In interviews, Reubens refers to the 1985 movie as "The bicycle movie."

It was also Danny Elfman’s first movie score. Paul Rubens heard him play in a dive bar in Pennsylvania and was a huge Oingo Boingo fan. He told Tim that he wanted Elfman to score the movie. When Danny got the call, he thought they’d want a couple Boingo songs, but instead was offered the job as a composer. Elfman sat on this decision, called his agent and said “I don’t want to do it.” His agent was furious because it took a lot of work to get this together so the agent replied “then call and tell them yourself.” Danny sat back a couple days. Almost calling numerous times and said “F*ck it. If I f*ck up their movie, they have no one to blame but themselves.”
