Canute being genuinely happy and laughing is so wholesome to see. He finally saw someone with simiilar goals to him and that definitely felt very satisfying and a sense of relief for him
Olmar got that character development. Bro understood what Thorfinn took years to get. Became a hard working farmer... got with the girl (the one if you remember from initial episodes whom he frequently visited for dirty stuff). I guess he took responsibility to take care of her as her dad lost his hands in the war against Canute and he asked Olmar to take care of his family. Good for him.
also the girl seems to genuine like him, so at least omar had a happy ending. he became better than his father and brother. the anime dont mention this but olmar paid reparation to all the slaves and workers, he sold most of the farm because of that, so now the land is small enough that they dont need slaves and they are working it themself.
@@pollatin1052 no, the anime dont mention that at all and most slaves were off screen. slaves are not just people like thorfinn that were bought. also people that were in debt and their way to pay was through becoming a slave and work the farm until they pay that debt. you see this during khetil speech when he promise to free them all of their debt with him if they fight.
Canute and Thorfinn have very similar goals. The problem was their ideals and methods. Canute had Sweyn talking in is hear, while Thorfinn had Thors. In the end, Thorfinn was the one who enlightened Canute, he took so much pressure off of his shoulders. Thorfinn was the other only person Canute would share his thoughts with, ever since the first season.
Canute explained his reasoning when talking to Wulf. “I thought you were the only one fighting with me.” He wants to build a Utopia and he thought it’s him versus the world. Hence ‘defying gods logic’. As Askeladd said, all the Vikings are ‘uncouth and filthy’. But not just them, lots run around committing atrocities. Even Canute’s brother Harald probably didn’t give a crap about making a Utopia and would just get in the way. Harald didn’t ban duels so he must have condoned them, tells us a little bit about him as a person. In the words of the priest, Harald probably “discriminates his love”, helped Canute out while accepting slave-labor donations from Ketil and allowing duels to happen. Canute sees Thorfinn is the first person who understands non-discriminatory love. The fact this is even possible, other people exist who also understand non-discriminatory love, opens up the theoretical possibilities endlessly. If Canute is the only one, then the only way to get his Utopia is by force. Hence, “conquer, rule, and direct then towards Utopia.” Because they literally don’t understand him or his goals. But now he has found someone who does.
Surnames weren't a thing back then. The closest to that were names of noble houses which could be used to address their members. Most people would instead introduce themselves by 'X son of Y' of 'X from Y [place]'. Because names would repeat (as they do today), but its quite difficult to have 2 people with same name from the same place or with same father name. If you were looking around for 'Roald' that could be any Roald, but there's probably not another Roald, son of Grim, or Thorfinn, son of Thors.
Funfact: We have in the series himself Leif Ericson, which just means Leif, son of Eric (the Red). In that way Snake could be simply called Roald Grimson. And Thorfin Thorsson. Of course Thorfin in the Series is called Thorfin Karlsefni. But Karlsefni("the makings of a man") is a title he received from his fellow Vikings in the series after duelling Thorkell and winning.
At 8:46, when Canute asks after whom Thorfinn took the gift of eloquence, he was referring to Askeladd, the man who was defined "good to talk" by Thorkell in episode 24 of the first season. Indeed, the entire situation was very similar: both Thorfinn and Askeladd were trying to stop the plans of the king of Denmark by talking... with a totally different outcome, however. For sure Thorfinn did not take his newfound ability to speak from Canute, who spent most of the time in the first season remaining silent, or from his dad, as Thors was a man of few, mostly enigmatic words, like "a true warrior doesn't need a sword", "I have no enemies". Thorfinn struggled to understand what he was trying to teach him, and Thorkell too was unable to decode what Thors was intending as a "true warrior".
Vinland has this effect on me, each time i finish an episode it brings me down to reality the wisdom this show has given me genuinely changed my perspective on life lol.
I think they're referring to the idea that Canute & Thorfinn aren't allies in the sense that Thorfinn won't directly assist Canute in the way he is going about peace.
I decided to binge watch the majority of your reactions and something that I noticed is how you dismiss a lot of things. 1. Thorfinn being a pacifist shouldn’t surprise you, b/c that’s everything his father wanted him to realize 2. All of you dismiss the time period of this anime, you were very unrealistic with how the dynamic was between slave owners and slaves. You were in a wishful thinking for a lot of the things that happened. For example Snake’s disregard of them being husband and wife and him wanting to kill Gardar 3. Canute has never been the antagonist all this time. He is a balanced character. Him acting that way with Thorfinn shouldn’t be a surprise.
In the manga it goes into some more detail about what happened to everyone. Ketil retired (as shown) and Olmar takes over the farm and sells half of the land to compensate those who were injured and the families of the killed during the battle. excited for next episode's reaction and I'm so sad this season is over. Now we wait...
Thorfinn has solidified his pacifism by vowing to create a land of peace. This conversation helped Thorfinn to stop the King but also helped clear the mind of an old friend, saving him from "his own curse": The weight of the crown and the constant voice in his head from the severed head of the previous king.
Thorfinn embodies true manhood imo, not the manhood often seen and promoted in media. A true warrior doesn't need his fists or to yell or scream or weapons to fight. A true warrior needs a calm heart, a sound mind, genuine understanding, and the ability to listen to other people.
sadly we will never know. since the author had to skip the arc because of the political problems in turkey and covid didnt help either. hope the anime can give us that arc as a special ova or something.
@@FZJanimated Safe to assume Snake was a Varangian for the Byzantine Empire. Basically, elite Viking troops which served the Byzantine Emperor, and seeing Snake's skill/him admitting to being a "warrior of Miklagard", the Viking's name for Constantinople, we can assume that much at least. The Varangian Guard had some serious drip, would be dope to see Snake in the fit.
@@christianpabs9994 Then I'm not sure what their confusion was. Grim is Roald's father, just like Snorre was Thors's father, Olaf was Askeladd's father, and Erik was Leif's dad. There's nothing more to it.
I hope you girls understand that the talking head is not literally the dad speaking, it’s his own subconscious lol, dad has nothing to do with, Canute’s own doing is
I feel like these girls can't interpret when positive things are happening 😅 the narrator talking about Canute withdrawing his troops from England and they're still looking uneasy like shits about to go down 😂 then again, enough terrible things happen in this series maybe they're just in the mentality of "shits about to go down" at any given moment!
I love the callback to Thors and first episode The first episode was called "Somewhere not here". Here Thorfinn said that he'll run away to some place not here (similar to how Thors and Helga ran away to some place i.e. Iceland. Some place that is far away from war and slavery)
In the anime it's left up in the air as to what happened to him. There is no chance for him to appear in the manga again, otherwise it would be a retcon but it's more open ended in the anime and he could appear again in the next arc which would be nice.
Grim was his Dad. A lot of surnames typically started as a way to distinguish what line you were from, what you did as an occupation, or some great deed in your family.
I feel like when we boil thorfinn down to just "following what his dad did" we're taking away the ideology that he does it for. The whole "you have no enemies" phrase and ideology is Thorfinn's focus, not just because his dad did it.
I know you guys have seen the finale by now, but this episode was the end of an arc in the manga which is why it had the finale feeling. Next episode (finale) is beginning of new arc!
What a good coming together. A thread tightly interwoven and held together by Arnheid's story. Thorfinn's journey to get here was so damn hard. Anyone goes through that would have convictions of steel. So proud of him.
I remember watching all these episodes at my lowest moments in life when I got stab in the lung and shot multiple times in my right ribs. I was so depressed but just seeing all these episodes made me appreciate life more.
When I watch this I always enjoy Sverkel, the old master. He preacher so much to Snake to just put the sword down and live to farm and cultivate. At the end even though he can't farm anymore he is still there and they give him a hoe to hold onto even though he doesn't have the strength. The only time you really see him smile.
I'm voting for Vinland Saga season 2 to win anime of the year. It should have won in 2019. I hope it doesn't get robbed again. Unfortunatly popularity wins and not what's actually the best but if Cyberpunk won last anime awards beating AOT and Demon Slayer then I have hope Vinland Saga can pull through. This is year we had a lot of good shows. Oshino ko is also in the running but it's not quite there yet to win Anime of the year. Most of the peak stuff will happen in future seasons I'm sure it will win then. It definitly will win in one of the future Years but this year has got to be Vinland Saga's year. If a story so well written, beautful and emotionally impactful doesn't win that would be a crime. Demon Slayer this year was fun but it's not Anime of The Year material. It definity deserves best animation and best fight scene for sure. AOT won in 2021 deservingly but 1 movie in 2023 does not top a complete masterclass of a season by Vinland Saga. I hope people that only have watched popular anime like AOT, Demon Slayer, Oshi No Ko, My hero academia etc give Vinland Saga a chance and watch it. You got to be mature and patient to understand and appreciate how beautuful this story is. Don't be that type of person that wants action or something to happen every 5 minutes and can't sit through it to appreciate it's slow but steady beautiful journey. If you're that type of person then my only hope is that you will slowly change when you grow up in age because you're missing out on Peak fiction and storytelling by being a simple person like that and you will never evolve from that childish shell.
I totally get and understand the praise Thorfinn gets for his character development. But for me, Canute’s progression was my favorite part of this season. His development was also incredible, but it was very much darker than Thorfinn’s. I’m really anxious to see where King Canute goes next.
