canute used to use oppressive force to achieve his goals, since finding new allies, hes learned to trust a little better and conduct himself in better light for the people. he reduced his overall man power but this in turn showed that the people can also trust him. he will prolly be much safer now than how he was before

Canute was controlling England through a large Danish army stationed in England and to sustain that army he needed money from sources other than English taxes so reduce the discontent among the English people that's why he was planning to seize farms from wealthy men starting from Ketil.
Seeing so much change in that psycho killer he used to know to now, canute thought that if someone like that can be produced by Vikings then maybe he also doesn't need to govern by fear and military might. So he put trust in the English people reduced the size of the Danish army and the people recognised that trust and are trying to make it work.
I definitely think Canute's mind wouldn't have changed it if it was any person other than Thorfinn to come talk with him and It wouldn't have worked if it was any King other than Canute there and Thorfinn knows that too.
Essentially Thorfinn restored Canute's faith in humanity

Canute inherited england after his father was killed by askeladd.
    His brother gave him Denmark.
The main problem canute faced was related to financing his army.
If he used taxes from England to fund army in Denmark,it would have given impression to Danish soldiers that canute trusts english more. As well as he's afraid of raising taxes on Danish people. This intel can be exploited by someone in Danish army and they could challenge canute's authority. And at the same time english people didn't want to bear the burden of financing canute's whole empire.
So after having conversation with thorfinn, canute decided to slash down his expenditures on army.
He put more trust in soldiers as well as people of denmark, And didn't seek to control them via english taxes. This had spill over effect on nobility. They realised canute is placing highest amount of faith in them so in they also responded in kind by accepting him as their king.

Vinland saga has by far one of the best OST EVER used in anime. It elevates the show to another level.
Thank you for making it so far. It's actually funny because Canute laughing is so relatable. He has been taught to not trust anyone and be ruthless until he meets the angry kid that somehow has found peace, must be both shocking and funny for him that even Thorfinn himself has found a way. Vinland saga is GOATED!

In my view the relationship between Canute and Thorfinn is something like a philosophy built by two symbiotic and unequal parts. Canute's methods helps the majority of his population by persecuting and oppressing a minority to result in more people living in a higher quality of life, meaning they are getting closer to 'paradise' at the expense of the few. On the other hand Thorfinn represents the minority who are oppressed and wants to create a world for them to flee to. This is what Thorfinn means by his power being much smaller than his, because they literally are the representations of the majority vs the minority.
So in theory as long as Thorfinn and the oppressed have a place to run to, then everyone (The majority under Canute and the minority under Thorfinn) has a place they can live comfortably and that is what building a 'paradise' means to both of them but for different reasons. Thorfinn is the other half to Canute's worldview that is outside of his control by necessity and this conversation allowed Canute the opportunity to learn that paradise can not be built by a single ideology or king, there has to be a counter balance. This is what Canute might mean by saying he has gained new allies, he now knows Thorfinn is out there building a world for the people he can not save. This results in Canute feeling the burden on his shoulders lessen since he isn't the only one building the world he wants, allowing him to take a different turn and disbanding his army instead of seizing more wealth from the citizens to pay for said army. Canute is rewarded by earning the trust of the nobility and and his authority becomes more authentic since he is becoming an accepted ruler amongst his people instead of a tyrant like his father.

Canute was using his army to opress the people of England because he thought they would attack him.
But he didnt have enough money for the army.
When he downsized his army the nobles were grateful that Canute trusted them.
Basically its better to try and build trust with your subordinates than rule with fear

There is still another two (maybe three) seasons worth of source material left.
The next arc is my favorite. It's called The Baltic Sea War Arc.
Every ideal, principle and commitment that Thorfinn has made this season will be challenged in ways that you could never even imagine. No spoilers, but this season is nothing but the beginning of Vinland Saga.

I'm honestly hoping that we'll get some "filler" content for the big trading expedition that was cut from the manga. The team that are working on this show have done a great job so far with all of the anime original stuff.
If that's included I'm sure we have another three seasons ahead of us, but I'd expect two without it.

@@danielcastaneda4975 The Baltic Sea War arc is literally the culmination of everything Vinland Saga set up in the first two arcs. Everything up to the end of the Farm Arc is literally just exposition for the Baltic War Arc. It is the proverbial meat and potatoes of the series.

In episdoe 9 thorfinn says to einar while taking oath that he has taken so many lives with his hands. Lives of people he bore no grudge against. Lives of people he didn't know names of.
In this episode, Roald, Son of Grimm becomes the first of names and lives that thorfinn manages to protect.
And director of episode 9 and 23 is Atsushi Kobayashi.
Close up shots of Animations of lips, detailed expressions on face and beautiful sceneries, is generally dead give away in vinland saga that episode is kobayashi cinema.
I hope he'll continue to work on this series in future as well. There are a number of manga chapters in next two arcs that i can imagine him directing.

In the last scene of season 1 , three (technically 4) characters were teased. One on the banks of a river. Two climbing on an Icy Mountain and one on a boat in a sea which turned out to be Einar. The other two are still yet to appear in the anime. I can't wait to see them finally animated whenever season 3 comes.
