  • Whats not to like? The new Hornby TXS Triplex Sound and blue tooth, fire box flicker and the first ready to run locomotive with steam generator adds a whole new dimension to the hobby perhaps?

I would point out that if you look at old movies of steam locos being properly fired, the exhaust out the stack is mostly steam, dissipating rapidly, and when running flat, there is little visible exhaust. The huge plumes of black smoke, especially in current U.S. steam operations, are done for the benefit of the railfan/photographer. Now, when working a steep bank ("grade" to the U.S. readers) with the loco pulling hard, there will be significant smoke, but there isn't a model built that can replicate that.

Hi, this smoke generator looks good, I hope it stays working the way it supposed to, Hornby have the knack of producing some cool items then after a while they stop working because they are underdeveloped and rushed out to unsuspecting customers whom deserve a lot more for their hard earned money, it would have been an idea to have a glowing firebox and steam generator in the W1 hush hush models, thanks for sharing.

Wish they had with the W1, its got the space necessary

I had one of these and found it only barely produced a thin wisp of steam. It also had issues because there are technically 2 decoders in the loco (one in the tender for the sound and control and one underneath the chimney for the steam generator). Placing it on a programming track, my ECoS controller immediately shorts out. Hornby claimed it was completely compatible with all DCC controllers - but DCC experts stated this isn't true. Hornby technical guys were completely at a loss. It shortly became unresponsive to any controller (Gaugemaster Prodigy Express, ECoS and even the bluetooth HM7000 DCC bluetooth app. The loco was returned to where I bought it from and tested thoroughly using an NCE Powercab system and another Gaugemaster controller who found the loco would only occasionally move - and sometimes "shoot off" at speed, with no sound or steam functions (despite the HM7000 DCC app indicating all was well).
I tried to leave a poor review on the Hornby website - but this wasn't published. They only display excellent reviews.
Fortunately, my retailer issued me with a credit note (as they had completely sold out and Hornby wouldn't let them have any more to sell). I'm now firmly sticking to Bachmann.

Great video. This model looks very nice indeed, I like the engine and the smoke as well. Thanks for sharing. Cheers Josh

Some of us will remember Hornby's 'synchrosmoke' system from the very late 60s and very early 70s which excited us children no end It was a great idea that relied on an element heating the oil, which had to be bought and thus was an expense, even if we had such a loco in the first place, but it just dripped the oil all over the place ruining plastics and making the rails slippery. With DCC now and this new system, let's hope it works well and not, as someone's already said, underdeveloped and rushed into production. In a hard water area in particular I can't help but think distilled water would be far, far better than tap water.

I think distilled water makes more sense than tap water

    • @chugwaterjack4458

Absolutely, any time you have a steam or water vapor generator, distilled water will help prevent the eventual accumulation of solids, destroying the system.
I particularly liked the slow running at around 10:00!

@chugwaterjack4458 thank you. I was very impressed with the P2. I hope the next offerings from Hornby are as good as this one

Part 2 was certainly an improvement, it suggests a little less filling than it says in the instructions maybe. Game changer? Early days, let's see what happens... Enjoyed the video, many thanks

I debated whether to just go with part 2 as I'm not a box opener and the loco running was better than I had expected. If the Black 5 is like this I will be very pleased to see it

I'm hoping to get the "Black 5" 4-6-0 with this steam generator. Have you had any trouble with water condensation on your layout?

Good luck I’ve had one on order for over 2 years now Hornby keeps moving the delivery dates back now they say autumn I’ll believe it when I see it

No problems with it at all. Very impressive system, but don't fill the water on track. The Black Five has marker lights, sound and steam. It is worth the wait. I ordered several to renumber

@@vcs00railway84 i’ve just ordered the steam generated flying Scotsman. I believe it is due in summer but let’s see. I previously ordered the black 5 two years ago like I said previously, I am still waiting hopefully it is worth waiting for.

Love the video, love the locomotive. Collected mine from my local model shop a few days ago after waiting four and a half years!
Is it just me, but has anyone discovered that this model is,
    1. Quite slow.
    2. Hopeless pulling power.
    3. Will not go around the 2nd radius curve (as it claims it will on the box, 438mm).
    4. It has a hard time getting round the 3rd radius!
    5. Terrible at reversing, even on straight track.
Has anyone else experienced these issues? Before I take it back and email Hornby.

    • @vcs00railway84
      @vcs00railway84  3 місяці тому

I think several people have had issues with the loco 🤔. On my video, mine is running around the 3rd radius. I don't think a loco that is 2-8-2 is suited to 2nd radius. Reverse was fine when I ran it backwards. On haulage, I didn't test it, but I've had issues with other Hornby locos not being able to haul a train because of lack of weight. Notably poor, Coronation Class (Streamline) struggles with the full 9 rake of its own coaches, Bittern double tender very poor haulage.
