No offence meant, But an old (and much cheaper) model with Syncrosmoke and a 'chuf-chuf' sound in the tender seemed to me to be just as good? I'm not impressed...... Digital steam engine sound is really terribly monotonous, and the whistle doesn't sound any better.... Sorry, but for the cost, I must be honest ... I would like something a lot better? It runs smooth though, that's got to be a redeeming factor....

The speaker in the Acc 66 is equivalent to an EM1 speaker, rather than an EM2 which was used in the Hattons 66. The sound is still excellent though and the base / treble can be tuned 'to taste' with CVs. CV196 is bass, CV197 is treble. Ranges 0 to 30. As this is a new model the ESU decoder will have the up to date firmware to enable this adjustment.

I had one of these and found it only barely produced a thin wisp of steam. It also had issues because there are technically 2 decoders in the loco (one in the tender for the sound and control and one underneath the chimney for the steam generator). Placing it on a programming track, my ECoS controller immediately shorts out. Hornby claimed it was completely compatible with all DCC controllers - but DCC experts stated this isn't true. Hornby technical guys were completely at a loss. It shortly became unresponsive to any controller (Gaugemaster Prodigy Express, ECoS and even the bluetooth HM7000 DCC bluetooth app. The loco was returned to where I bought it from and tested thoroughly using an NCE Powercab system and another Gaugemaster controller who found the loco would only occasionally move - and sometimes "shoot off" at speed, with no sound or steam functions (despite the HM7000 DCC app indicating all was well). I tried to leave a poor review on the Hornby website - but this wasn't published. They only display excellent reviews. Fortunately, my retailer issued me with a credit note (as they had completely sold out and Hornby wouldn't let them have any more to sell). I'm now firmly sticking to Bachmann.

I would point out that if you look at old movies of steam locos being properly fired, the exhaust out the stack is mostly steam, dissipating rapidly, and when running flat, there is little visible exhaust. The huge plumes of black smoke, especially in current U.S. steam operations, are done for the benefit of the railfan/photographer. Now, when working a steep bank ("grade" to the U.S. readers) with the loco pulling hard, there will be significant smoke, but there isn't a model built that can replicate that.

Thanks for this exceptional layout, which takes me back to boyhood days. My grandad was a fitter on the saddle tanks, & as a boy I remember the sign on the crossing gates, 'When the bell rings the gates will open', & sure enough the small red engine would come puffing across. We even had a school trip around some of the system, with the privilege of being seated in the plush Victorian (?) coach formerly used by the Directors. I wonder if it's still in existence?

Love the video, love the locomotive. Collected mine from my local model shop a few days ago after waiting four and a half years! Is it just me, but has anyone discovered that this model is, 1. Quite slow. 2. Hopeless pulling power. 3. Will not go around the 2nd radius curve (as it claims it will on the box, 438mm). 4. It has a hard time getting round the 3rd radius! 5. Terrible at reversing, even on straight track. Has anyone else experienced these issues? Before I take it back and email Hornby.

    • @vcs00railway84
      @vcs00railway84 3 місяці тому

I think several people have had issues with the loco 🤔. On my video, mine is running around the 3rd radius. I don't think a loco that is 2-8-2 is suited to 2nd radius. Reverse was fine when I ran it backwards. On haulage, I didn't test it, but I've had issues with other Hornby locos not being able to haul a train because of lack of weight. Notably poor, Coronation Class (Streamline) struggles with the full 9 rake of its own coaches, Bittern double tender very poor haulage.

Some of us will remember Hornby's 'synchrosmoke' system from the very late 60s and very early 70s which excited us children no end It was a great idea that relied on an element heating the oil, which had to be bought and thus was an expense, even if we had such a loco in the first place, but it just dripped the oil all over the place ruining plastics and making the rails slippery. With DCC now and this new system, let's hope it works well and not, as someone's already said, underdeveloped and rushed into production. In a hard water area in particular I can't help but think distilled water would be far, far better than tap water.

You also had a Gunpowder Van attached. Rule no. 1: never couple a Gunpowder Van directly behind a steamy. Sparks from the engine's funnel can set the van alight, and cause a loud explosion. Rule no. 2: always keep Gunpowder Vans in the middle of a goods train consist. Never attach them to a rake of coaches, as that puts the passengers at a high risk of getting killed. Safety comes first. Nice coaches, they suit Hardwicke to a t. The interior lights were flashing, I noticed. Perhaps they need a bit of attention.

I cheated, bought it ready done! I had to rewire some of it. Since the video i sold the model because it was the basic Hornby railroad class 31. Looking forward to seeing the Accurascale version which will have similar lights factory fitted

Hi there, great video (in fact all your vids are great informative and inspiring). I am new to the MR hobby and just purchased this loco. What if anything did you do with the noisy motor? Did you swap it out? OR did the sound decoder installation drown out the noisy motor?

    • @vcs00railway84

Hello! I don't recall any issue with the motor in this loco. I have, I think two other Hornby ones and one DJ Models J94. The Hornby version are easier to get at the motors, but I haven't changed any of them . Perhaps I've been lucky or the sound hides any unwanted noise 😄

Nice coaches, but coaches that wobble drive me nuts.

Why do they always produce them with white roofs? A pity they did not try the attractive American bogies.

"The crimson lake colour covered the entire sides. Lining was in gold. Ends were all black, but the handrails to the roof were in crimson lake. Lettering included a single 'G W R' in the side panel above the garter crest. Roofs were white, with a 2" black border at the roof ends." So the simple answer is 'because that's what colour they were'. These are MODELS, not toys.

Interesting and informative review of this GWR-Crimson liveried stock - thank you for sharing! 👍 The details of this stock are absolutely superb and (hopefully) friends will bring examples along to run on Ewhurst Green! 😉 For those who were not aware, early applications of the BR Crimson Lake livery had horizontal waist-height lining. However, this was quickly discontinued and presumably does not feature on Dapol's BR Crimson Lake liveried releases. The WR started using Crimson Lake from around May 1949 [I have covered some of this information on Blood and Custard]. 🙂 PS do like the use of a Black Motor! 🌞

They should do what Accurascale do and use magnetic switches, no need to much about with DCC chips.

Yes, so much simpler its only on off and a tail light. A stay alive could have been added to the light pcb although the lights didn't flicker very much thanks to all wheel pick up

Toby is a credit to your railway. He's a branch line engine, so main line runs would not be suitable for him. His water tank is very small. In any case, fair play to you.

I have fitted the Accurascale Sound chip in my Bachmann 55019 with EM2, the Accurascale + EM2 is spot on. It sounds better than my Accurascale Deltic, of course with its EM1...
