I know this is a old video, but for anyone having a problem with the pilot staying lit after releasing the pilot button call rheem support. I ended up replacing the thermocouple but still same issue. I just called rheem support and they are going to replace the whole tank for free with labor included. They said they had several customers replace the gas control valve only to call back 6 months later with same problem. Hope this helps someone.
Dude! Same problem here! Replaced the thermocouple and can relight manually but pilot shuts off once water comes to temp. When did you call Rheem? Any more details you can provide? I see this comment is only a week old.
I've been on and off the phone with Rheem support now since last Friday! They're sending me a new pilot assembly and new gas valve. I wonder if they'd consider this option cause it seems their 2020 production models had a really bad run...
I just replaced mine and I followed these instructions to the letter and it worked better than I thought it would. I'm not a professional but I'm a little more than unskilled. THANK YOU FOR THE INFORMATION AND DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS.
I have a gas 40 gallon Richmond hot water tank made by Rheem. It’s still under warranty. I informed the tech on the phone I woke up without no water & when I attempted to turn the black dial counterclockwise to the off position & then to pilot as per the instructions in order to piezo ignite the pilot, the dial would not turn to the off position. So I could not light the pilot as the dial would not advance in order to line it up to the red arrow at the left. The tech was confident the problem is the gas control valve so the part was FedExed to me. The warranty caps off at $150.00 in labor of which I’m not happy about-I’m on a fixed income & that leaves too much leeway to be charged far more. This job doesn’t look hard & it was indicated would take 30 minutes. Longer if they drain every bit of water. I’m thinking to call an HVAC serviceman as opposed to a plumber as I’m thinking plumbers would cost more per hour & after $150.00, this will come out of my pocket. Actually it all will come out of my pocket because of Rheem’s stupid policy of having to pay the serviceman first & then get reimbursed later through their website portal. I didn’t have this problem when I had an A. O. Smith water heater under warranty. Both parts & labor were automatically taken care of without all these games. And what if the problem isn’t the gas control valve. I’ve already been without hot water for close to a week as it’s going to be a trick as to who to hire. I’m working on getting a referral but aren’t HVAC service people just as qualified as a plumber to do this job as long as they are licensed?
I just had the change one at one of my Apartments I thought it was the thermal coupler so I'll talk to mr. Water heater and he told me that it was the gas valve goes bad he said Rheem made bad ones and 2013 that's the one I had he said he's changed over 400 all of them unfortunately mine was 4 months past the warranty night so I had to buy one at a Rheem dealership for $120 I watched the video on how God changed it and I went and did it first time ever did it my life and it worked out good and now it works Mom very disappointed in water tank at 6 years old and failed I have some apartments that have whirlpool hot water tanks I've gotten 18 years out of them
Having the same issue as we speak I had a water heater that lasted over 15 years actually it was still working when I replaced it I only replaced it because I wanted a new and more energy efficient water heater. had this water heater over a year and a half, after i bought all and replace the other parts, they saying it's the gas control valve but of course the warranty doesn't cover that so I have to pay for the part I'd rather do it myself so sounding like will having an issue with this gas control valve out some light from the start that should have been their first guests
I 'm new to these type of water heaters. Used to you would lite the pilot and turn it on. Use a match to light the pilot. Now they have these igniters. 😊. I wonder where they came up with that? 😉
" air locking" what does that mean and why would want to do it? How are you able to ascertain that the gas valve needed to be changed? Why was it necessary to change the pilot assembly?
What was wrong with the old valve? I have the exact same valve and I believe I need to replace it. Pilot won't stay lit and have replaced the thermocouple. So replacing the valve is my next option.
I just replaced the exact valve yesterday and it did not work. After putting all the money in I had to by a new water heater. We put a camera down the top to look at the combustion chamber and it was full of holes. Only 5 years old! They build stuff too cheap!
@@crack1666 I have a Home Depot Rheem installed 9-12-20 and now the pilot won't stay lit. Dealing with Rheem has been less than ideal. Getting them on the phone is a challenge. They will not overnight a valve, first they didn't know if they had any valves in stock. 2-4 days shipping. Now if the Home Depot sells these heaters wouldn't it make sense for each store to have atleast one valve and burner assembly in stock to cut the Downtime? Back to Bradford White from the supply house.
@@vinceleto Yes getting Rheem support on the phone is a nightmare. Decided I cared more about having hot water than waiting for Rheem/Richmond to help. Ended up finding the exact same gas control valve on ebay for just under 100 bucks and that did the trick. I will never buy anything Rheem/Richmond/GE ever again.
I had the same issue but I just connected the two wires where the thermal couple screws in at. There's a white plastic tab with two wires.Pop the white tab out slide the two metal pieces out the tab.Stack them on top of each other and slide them back in where the white tab was.Screw your thermal couple in place while making sure those two tabs are in still in place.Light your tank
If someone tried used this trick and leaves the Wh without fixing the issue it has with the gas valve they could easily blow up their home if that pilot light somehow goes out and there is no one around to smell the flowing gas the home will quickly fill up with gas and then one spark and it's goodbye world, house.. As A quick fix until it can permanently fixed properly this could work out but that's it and its still a FIRE RISK!
I have this model of thermostat, how would I relight my pilot safely? Im confident that I know how but I just wanted to make sure so I was looking for videos that do it using the same thermostat.
Glad you posted this :) A local plumber was trying to explain this procedure to me, but much nicer to see it actually done. Did you have a black relief valve on top? I didn't see one, but he said to toss some duct tape over it to keep the air lock :)
Yep I bought mine in April 2020 and October 2021 I have no hot water. Thinking about just buying a new water water. I can install a new one myself and not much more cost to install a new one than pay a company to replace the guts. .
Great video hopefully it works pluming Supply store is going give me part free due a silent recall on 2020 GCV. This was so easy to do, much easier than replacing the thearmaocuple. The only thing I did was removed the plastic rapping on the new one is going to f^*&%$ up no leaks fired working thanks again. 2020 SP20303B Gas Control thermosta.
Glad you asked this. I just removed the dead valve from my 6 month old Rheem with this SIT 650 valve, and this plastic was all deteriorated and the probes were corroded underneath it. I'm thinking this plastic was supposed to be removed at the factory before the valve was installed, and pinholes develop from corrosion in the safety probe killing the valve.
@@MarkPalmer1000 I don't think its supposed to be removed at the factory. I think its to stop calcium build up between the two probes, that's my guess atleast. My bad valve also had the plastic all corroded and cracked as well and that was after 4 months. Doesn't make sense to me so I ripped it off

For those who ask this control valve replaced in this video is a SIT 650 Delta, typically sold under Rheem part number SP20303A.
Yea mine is sp20303b I thinks its the same looks exactly like this one

If water rises up 3mm above where the thermocouple threads enter the hole on this control valve, would the control valve need to be replaced?

Are tjese newer gas valves failing now? I never found a bad gas valve in all the years I did hot water tanks.
Rheem sucks.... mine failed less than one year
Do you need to put any thread sealer on the gas lines when reconnecting?
"What's the best way to change a gas valve out on a water heater?" "Quickly!"
Get a pump to drain the take quickly
I carry a 18 inch pipe to use as a wrench on these valves and the pressure relief valves, works well.
Just use a 12" nipple. A. it's cheaper. B. it's a better connection, than a wrench. C. it's actually what the gas valve manufacturers recommend.
Can the igniter button just be replaced?
No

How did you remove thermal coupling?? From this exact model?
