- A "quick" look at my Singer 401a sewing machine. It gets used a lot even though I have a modern digital machine as well. My apologies for the length of the video, I just really love this machine.

My grandma just gave me her 1957 model and I love it but I am new to sewing. Thank you so much for this video. It’s extremely helpful.
Ooh! My grandma told me when threading this machine to just lick my finger and touch the needle eye and not the thread and it’ll go right through. Works like a champ, if you ever can’t find you threading tool!
She threaded my 206k in a parking lot on a raining day like this on the first go and she’s almost 90.

TheAdamsRib cool. You really can't beat these machines. I have a fancy Brother as well, but this is my go to machine.

and like yours, I found mine at a goodwill for $5 she was frozen and ridged.
oiled her up and patiently worked her free. I'm making dresses for my daughters this spring.
And I use those crazy 60s fancy stitches. ;) lol.
That embroidery darning attached is worth a lot
It's amazingly long lived. I doubt my brother will be around 60 plus years from now
In your Solomon box you have a cool ruffler foot! I wish I had one for my 401G from my Grandma... Will have to look for it on ebay surely. .. )
There are so many attachments that I don't use... My mother/Grandmother were pack rats lol
I have a 401 slant o matic. best machine I ever had.
I have a 790B Bernina, vintage Singers 1939, 1941 Featherweight and a 1941. I also have a Singer Quantum 9960. That's fairly new, and I just bought a Singer Merrit, singer Stylist 534. Not want what their dates are. Can't wait to play with them!
Ohhh man! I've got one of those, but I didn't know how to use it! That works better than my Bernina!!!

Am so glad for your help. Only thing is my machine is a bit different but it still uses disc. Operator needs more education

The ruffeler foot can be ordered from Singer.

I just got this machine 401a but I need some clarity as to what shank I have. Is this a slant shank, low/short shank or a high/long shank. The reason I am asking is because I have a lot of feet and I want to adapt them to my singer. The feet I have are for another model Brother machine.
Wow that sounds like a project! The 401a is a slant shank. But you can still buy a lot of parts online. Google "singer 401a parts" and you should see several vendors. I've used Amazon and www.sewingpartsonline.com
Both should have most of what you need to get back up and running!

@@JRMorris I just found the Singer Slant Snap-on Shank 5011-60 but it's all plastic. This will fit my vintage machine because I have a box full of presser feet that I use on my new brother machine. Part is only 10 bucks :) I do however need to find the buttonholer for my singer. I guess for now I will make a couple of throw pillows and then service the machine with lube/oil/grease. The one thing I did not like about the singer was the cube next to the foot pedal trigger. I woke up this morning and cut it off :D now I have more control over the speed of my machine while sewing :D I always wanted a vintage sewing machine and my neighbor gave it to me a few weeks ago because it belonged to his sister whom died in a storm when a giant tree fell on her and her vehicle and she died instantly here in San Diego Pacific beach last year. So the machine has a bit of sentimental value if you will.
@@rogerlane2282 it takes a bit of getting used to but I like the old school foot pedal on the old singers. My brother is a straight on gas pedal style, but it lacks the character the knob had!
Does the buttonholer have to be specific to the Slantomatic or does it fit any vintage singer?
I'm not sure as I only have the one singer, but I think it would work. It attached to the foot screw
There are buttonholers specially for slant shank machines!
My machine don't say model number . Only its a Singer the disc for different stitches is on the top. I did try it. But am sure I need to do more then just that. Please help Maybe I can send u a picture of it
There should be a setting on the stitch selector that will use the disks. Please do post a photo.
