"Investigate issues with adhesive strength" - Gonna be "that guy" here and point out the problem is you installed it wrong. If you follow their instructions they tell you to let the adhesive cure for 24 hours before mounting. This is like the 3M strips. You want to let them spend some time without a load to really be secure. Now to be fair no one has time for 24 hours after buying a new toy, but just slapping it right on is why it wont' adhere right. At least give it a few hours, the more the better. I left mine overnight and it has never fallen off.
Thanks for this comment. Mine arrives Friday and I was gonna slap it ok right away.
I know it seemed nice to add a layer of music to it, but it does become a competitor to your voice.
A better solution and cheaper as you do not have to hunt for copyright / free use music is to select the music track in your editing software and hit the DELETE key and go with silence instead.
So far, there haven't been any claims done towards silence and you can be free of competitors in the future when talking.
It's just a mixing problem, the music would be nice if it were 15-20% lower.
I would say the same, but the song used is from Ace Combat so it's impossible to be mad about that and I totally can hear him, soooo c:
Sound like runescape music
Quieter and a less busy song would have been ideal if he wanted to keep music... The funky drums are a little much.
I thought the Music was just fine. It made the Video more interesting.
Cheers for the review Grump. I'm still happy with my track IR. But will look out for other user reviews in the future.
I love my tobii 5 for many games and it's ALMOST there for DCS but still not - the head tracking is not precise. When you have to select dials, buttons, etc. in the cockpit the view will move around a bit all the time. Now the solution for me is to disable the dcs game in the tobii settings and instead use facetrackir which is really stable and good + you get the trackir effect in external view :) So now I get the best of both worlds for anything that supports either tobii 5 or trackir
I dont know what to do because i dont think trackir ships to europe. And if the tobii is unusable then i dont know what to get
Do you mean FaceTrackNoIR? I can't find "facetrackir". How'd you set up FTNI to work with Tobii 5 for DCS?
The subject is very interesting but I have very hard time focusing on the speech while the music is so damn loud :(
Phenomenal review! Might have to pick one of these up!
Awesome, thank you for reviewing this.
I have been using ET5 for the past 5 month. Although the initial installation of the ET5 is simple, when it comes to tuning it in DCS, it did take me some time, firstly to learn how to use it (Never used headtracking before), secondly it needed some tuning, before it was useable. I opted to turn of the eyetracking, as I couldnt get it to work comfortably. Might give it another go after this vid though. With that said, I really find it to be a quality product, and it also goes great with me playing Star Citizen :P
I like how it responds in Star Citizen. It was plug in play no setting tweaks for me.
I had a home made open track head set worked fine cost very little, got vr its so much better, although the resolution isn't as good as 4k the ability to look at a button and click from a hotas click is game changing, I've found I can click the buttons faster by looking at them than having them on hotas and button boxes.
So much better. I actually still use the number pad to speed up programming jdams. There is even a scratch pad for VR mod out I just found.
VR downsides are minimal next to the immersion experience. Even in FS2020, where you want to see charts and things.
For anyone thinking of getting this instead of TrackIR, don't. I own both, and can say that TrackIR's head tracking is leagues ahead of Tobii Eye Tracker 5. TrackIR is both more responsive and has more precision.
Same here.
Why is this not mentioned in the review? It is important to a lot of people, I imagine…
Not necessarily depends on your screen size. If you have a normal pc monitor track ir is better for you but if you are like me and have a 45 inch 4k 120 hertz oled tv then toby is better. Reason is a loss of track at extreme angles due to large screen on trackir.
They fixed most of your complaints months ago in the updates. Have some faith.
I have both as well and couldn’t disagree more. I should say had, I gave my track ir away. Absolutely love the tobii.
@@bluesfool1what size screen do you use?
Works brilliantly in Star Citizen, works well in MSFS2020 using opentack software......very jittery in DCS when looking at panels lower rear left and right . Several hours later and still cant get it to work without jitters.
EDIT. Better results using facetracknoir and tobi5 with DCS rather than using tobi software
Curious to know if you have any updates? Just bought the Tobi myself.
@Andy A. I use VR for DCS so can’t help. Sorry
Great review Grump! Impressive tech.
I just want to raise a minor issue - If you have a monitor with the controls sited on the bottom edge of the monitor in the centre (LG LG 29UM67 29" widescreen) you can't use the variable angle clip (mount type A) to attach the eyetracker under the screen as it blocks access to the controls. I had to use one of the magnetic strips to attach it to the bezel at the bottom of the monitor.
Disable Hotplug on the bottom of the controls page to stop the “TrackIR disconnected” stutters and warnings.
It was driving me nuts when I got my reverb g2.
Disabling this setting resolved the issue.
Oh nice. Thank you! I guess nobody else could figure this one out. :)
Thanks for your video. Trying this out from Amazon with a 30 day return policy. I have a 5760x1080 res. What resolution do you play DCS? Your video looks like you use a smaller resolution than your monitor is capable of? Is that just for this recording? Also, it would be nice to see all of your settings. From what I could see, my settings were way off from yours, so I am trying out what little that I can see of your profile. I don't even see 'Gaze Tracking' in your settings at all.. How can that be? As I do see the Ghost in your flying.. And is your Head Position enabled? Thanks again.
Grump. You have found your true vocation in life. 👍
Ace Combat X ost? didn't know you were pilots of culture as well :3
Haha this is actually a Net-Zone remixed version. ua-cam.com/channels/cRjuatPO7oDpnHik0vMlDw.html
@@WyvernFalken well, if it's Ac related I'm down with it HAHAHAHA
Thank you very much for the review!
If I may ask, have you tested it in a low light environment? Do you need to keep the lights on all the time to make it work?
I tested it in low light and normal conditions. Generally you want it a bit darker since it can distinguish you specific signature but haven't had the detection go haywire when for example my kitchen light was on.
The eyetracker has it own IR lights (the two panels on the far left and right ends, you can see the IR illuminators blinking at 5:08) so I don't think it relies on ambient lighting, except in the case where you might have the sun shining directly on it
Seems good. Might consider it in the future but I'll stck with my track ir for the time beeing
My earlier Tobii doesn't register the outer extents of my 21.9 34" monitor very well. Clearly only designed for 16.9 screens. Have they improved it with the 5 ?
Have the 4c, which didn't come with a type A mount - put my own together from some sticky back velcro tape and a L cross secition piece of plastic - it's worked pretty well (velcro dot's weren't strong enough - it would fall off hence the need to use full length tape). Good that they've put this in now though - the magnetic fasteners didn't work well in this scenario at all. In DCS it needs some setting up, had to find DCS for it, adn the sensitivity needed tuning . It works really well in Elite Dangerous. I've never used IR so not sure how good that is. I've also used mine on a widescreen (despite the warnings) and it's never had a problem with that (again despite the original). Not sure about adding movement to the external views - when I'm in external views I'm usually looking around at the view centred on the plane, it would be annoying to have the camera slew around. That said I'm not sure I've completely got it completely set up optimally - would you mind sharing the settings you ended up using? (Great review by the way but agree with others here that the music was probably unnecessary)
I can't say my settings were fully optimized to how I would like it honestly lol. A few others in the comments here have recommended using facetracknoir instead of Tobii Game Hub. You could mess with that and see what you get. :)
very comprehensive.. nice video. thanks
The glue on my copy was super strong and put up a tough fight when I packaged my monitor and had to remove the whole thing.
I bought it some month ago and tested it for some weeks but had to return it ultimately. The reason was I couldn't find a setting which really made it work for me. There was always a slight delay/input lag and I couldn't do snap views while dogfighting. The movement was just too slow for me. If you don't require really quick views for your game it's awesome because there's no gear on your head why I would have loved to keep it.
Edit: It also hadn't had 6 DOF at the beginning of this year.
The update helped a lot. 6 dof and it feels snappier. It is still a viable option to those who don't want bulky equipment on their heads.
@@CoreZer0 Thanks for the info. I might give it another try than in the future because I really liked the concept.
Awesome video. I have learned a lot.
Nice review Grump!
I see this being an ideal piece of hardware for someone with an upper limb disability if they implement eye blink mouse clicks. Good review.
Eye blink clicks are a thing!
@@maximilianschaffler9981 well that's awesome!
Nice review. Curious how it would work with glasses with bluelight protection.
Thank you! Would you happen to know if anyone successfully used Leap Motion for hand tracking in DCS?
I do not. Sorry.
How did Tobi Eye Tracker age. Are there some improvements? I am currently looking for a headtracker (using a PS3 cam, but aint that happy). Pricewise in Germany Track IR and Tobi cost almost the same, but tobi would free my head of any reflectors or clips.
For the lack of difference between the different eye tracking, save money and get the track hat / delan clip. I have been using the delan clip for years now and for £30 it is very very hard to beat. Again I'd save money and only reccomend spending that money on some decent flight hardware such as new hotas or rudder etc etc
Indeed $229 is a no go, what's the cost to make this $50? lol
Great review - Have Tobii updated the software according to what you say, have there been any updates at all?
👍Nice review. Cost being an issue, I will stick with my trackIR
3:31 It looks like that USB cable is on it's way out. It looks split. You might want to put some superglue on that and let it dry in the straight position or you could be in for headaches.
Sharp eye! Thank you!
Nice review Grump. 👍
Thanks. Did you test trackhat sensor v2 ?
I got my tracker today and its been nothing but trouble. It says it will auto config like you say in the video but nothing installed. Had to search multiple places to find the Core software. I plugged the device in powered usb and that didn’t work. Finally logged a support ticket. No response tomorrow and i’ll have to return it
If it was $100 cheaper I’d grab that but for $60 you can get a vr headset and use that for other games. I’d love to pick it up just a bit much for what it is in my opinion
Yeah. Competing against VR at VR prices...not a winning choice.
Glad that my Alienware Area 51M laptop comes with Tobii fitted by default. I don't have to deal with mounting/centering issues
I need glasses in front of screen, can it cause any issues with eyetracking?
I didn't even know or notice that external views were supposed to work with my head tracker.
What about the mendatory lighting condition .. can you run it in a dark room at night like IR selutions?
The track ir camera captures at 120fps. So I'm forced to limit the monitor refresh to 120 to avoid microstuttering. What is the capture rate for Tobii?
However I don't suffer from hot ears because I don't use the headset. I use the standard clip mounted on a headband
Per the site, ET5 runs at 133Hz.
These are helpful these vids lol. Cheers reapers.
What was the blueish round blob that keep moving around? Is that from the Tobii tracker?
Note on VR. I've got a Rift Quest 2. And when looking at external views of aircraft. Looking around, pans the view side to side to take focus off the aircraft, while mouse movement will make the camera orbit the aircraft.
As far as clicking with eyes.
Have you tried binding a left and rightclick button to a stick/throttle? I don't have the hardware so I can't try this. But I can't see why it shouldn't be a thing that one could do.
Unfortunately the DCS control settings don’t allow for remapping then left and right mouse button click and the mouse wheel to buttons and dials on a HOTAS device.
@@ericandi Don't some HOTAS setups have their own tuning software though? I know I used to have a PS3 controller set up for my machine, where x/o were left and right click respectively.
@@ericandi now it have. I do that
I'm a VR player (Reverb G2) but I notice that my monitor has its control buttons directly under where the mount would go. Seems like I would never be able to use this even if I wanted to. UNLESS mounting it to the top of the display is an option?
Top of the screen seems to be a no go. Sounds like your monitor type is a unique configuration. Perhaps you can use Mount B and jury rig it to the monitor legs or attach it to the bottom frame of your monitor instead of underneath the frame. Just an option.
Thanks for the review! I assume that the green blob on the screen that is tracking your eyes can be turned off?
Yes. It doesn't come standard with the software. Streamers and youtubers can download Tobii Ghost to make it show on their vids.
Can the Tobii Eye Tracker 5 also apply foveated rendering on Monitor?
I couldn't hear you over the music, so I almost gave up. But managed to finish and appreciate the quality review with the exception of the music. Can I get a red 'X"on that!❌
I believe my alienware Area 51 pc came standard with this. My problem was I tried to use it and didn’t care to use it due to the fact it was integrated component into the pc and I have a 32 inch monitor. When I didn’t want to use it it screwed my dcs up to where I couldn’t use it. I had to scrub the system of dcs and I deleted the Tobii software off the pc. I have since switched to vr.
Ive read so much crap (?) about Tobii: eye strain, and a lot of lag - and no pause function (or dead zone). Whats true and whats not, and is there an IR beam (or similar) that can hurt your eyes ?
How is the input lag vs trackIR? This is the biggest reason I watched this video, but you didn't address that element of performance. Still a good video, so thank you..
Practicality and comfort are subjective. VR gives a lot more immersion. This has to be considered.
The price of the oculus quest 2 itself costs about 300 euros and does not weigh so much as to give you a stiff neck. For the nausea just use it a little and you get used to it ... what it costs is the PC, but these preferences are also. However even if you use the Tobii and want to enjoy the game in high details you still need a good PC
DCS is a game that focuses heavily on immersion. So if it's possible VR is better (I repeat: for a deeper immersion).
nice review grump
So my Tobi eye tracker 5 refuses to work for dcs I have no idea why. Tried what you said but it just won’t work.
I’ve fiddled with my Tobii settings and can’t find anything I like. Trying to focus in on the instrument panels is annoying because it keeps moving around. Really fatigues my eyes
That happens to me when using my regular head tracker.
i found that disabeling the eye tracking is very useful to stop it from moving
7:50 - I want a 76 metre screen😁
I was curious if you knew of a hotkey that could be used to turn tracking on and off? As a streamer my main concern is that looking over to chat will disorient viewers if I keep looking over to chat and the view keeps swinging around. Great review though, definitely considering picking one up soon.
All you need to do is set up the hotkeys for track reset and track on/off in the tobii software
@@Hellyos90 thank you, glad to know there are options for that!
A better comparison imho would've been the comparatively priced TrackIR.
VR is King
Anything else now is just bleh. VR is King.
PepperPete11 totally
Yes. Totally agree.
Nah too uncomfortable and limited fov
Diodes are one way check valves, leds are on the track IR
I bought it few days ago and i'm quite satisfied despite it's not really easy to configure it in dcs. In flight it's very powerful and it's a real game changer. What's puzzling me is how to configure it in ramp start. How the heck , in a F16, you can look at switches located and far left and far right without rotating your neck like Linda Blair in "the exorcist"? And in the apache how you can boresight your weapon sys looking at the yellow dot while trying to press the B/S now button? That said, for me it's a huge YES but i guess i'll exploit tobii at full potential in 1 year or so. Thanks for your video!
Hi bottom line will the tobii 5 work with 3 46" monitors? I am using mine for surround.
Nice review, thanks! Did you check the max distance your face may be to the sensor for the tracking to still work properly?
Typically I was between 18-24in away from TE5 and didn't have issues registering.
Is that blob always on screen? And what can this do that TrackIR can't for half the price?
I find it very hard to keep centered without bobbing around. Do you have a profile setting for Tobii that you can upload?
It gets wishy washy if you enable both headtracking and eye tracking. I recommend doing one or the other. Also make sure you don't have automatic head centering checked as that will slowly move your adjusted head position to the center of the screen and that can really screw your movements. I couldn't get it fine tuned fully.
@@WyvernFalken yeah I ended up disabling gaze tracking and now I’m working on aping the head tracking settings from TrackIR. But TIR is flawless for me so I suspect I will just go back to it. OTOH it works really well with Star Citizen and doesn’t require a lot of recentering which I have to do with TrackIR in that game.
quest 2 would be a much better option at that price, for even more immersion
unless you don't have a beast of a rig to run it.
Yeah except for the $1000+ GPU upgrade you'd need with today's prices
How is the latency with Tobii v5 compared to opentrack hat/LED and third party apps like SmoothTrack?
My frames of reference are TrackHat and TE5. Because of how the ET5 looks at how your eyes move, it will slow a bit delayed...I'd say about 0.1-0.3s delay.
I got mine about 2 weeks ago. Works very well for me. No complaints other than taking me a lot of time tweaking to find the perfect curves for my setup (but that's to be expected with any other head tracking device).
would like to see your curves for the set up. No happy withm ine for the moment
@@tomdebondt8025 The right curves would be slightly different for your setup but if you want to see mine, message me on discord (_Matchless_#8504) and I'll send you a screenshot of my settings.
When I reinstalled DCS, it said that my Eye Tracker 5 was connected to DCS, but it did not work in the game. Can you give me the help? ( im steam user )
Not being able to source a damn PS3 camera, this is on its way, intend to combine with FaceTrackNoir.
does it have to be on the dcs steam version?
Wow an eye watering price and no function in external views is a complete killer for me. Headset is also a must for me with as environmental noise without them destroys immersion. A flight sim environment (esp DCS) seems wrong without a comms headset especially in multiplayer and ATC use. Half the price and more functionality might make it a worthwhile option down the track imo. I use a battery pack TrackIR on a quality wireless headset and it doesn't restrict movement any more than being in a real cockpit with a comms headset.
earbuds and a standing mic is better then a headset, you just need a decent set of buds for it to feel better.
That bubble?!!
I called the company and there is no phone number for the gaming division and I spoke with the medical tech support. The device can only be placed near the screen. You can't put closer if you sit 8 feet away from a 55" OLED like I do. This is a huge disadvantage.
this feel like a review from 2012 but it was very helpful either way :)
How does it work if you wear glasses?
Agree the mounting system is not the best. the monitor heats up and the sticky system fails. aside from that, it works well just have to set it up correctly
Good to know it wasn't just me. Points for effort though on their side for trying to innovate a good mount. My recommendation is some industrial velcro from Home Depot or Lowes. That stuff never lets go. :P
Can you have the Tobi sat on top of the monitor instead?
Nope tobii has to be below the monitor sadly (I have a Tobii 4c)
@@Hellyos90 thats a shame, appreciate the reply
@@Hellyos90 Weird - I would have assumed the whole tracking works better from top of the screen; the angle towards the face/eyes makes more sense (for me)....good to know!
7:50 thats quite a big monitor... xD
Not a chance. Maybe years ago. But you are approaching Quest 2 price point which is VASTLY superior. The minute you said the price I stopped the video. Great review though but way too little too late by Tobii. And with the reduced functionality? Naw.
I get your point; although I think the comparison between tracking and VR somehow doesn't make a lot of sense - VR has greater demanding on your hardware in general, so there are expenses as well.
@@talespinner4863 it's way more expensive than other trackers. I haven't seen much available here that warrants $100+ dollars extra compared to other trackers.
I find the heat from the monitor makes adhesive weak
I had the track IR and used that for years. But dream about the day i dont need a head pece. So i bought the tobii5 with big hopes for the new hat less gaming. Manny good revievs out there.... Now 3 months later with the tobii5. I started using the ir tracker again. Tobii5 whas a big dissapointment after all the hype out there. IRtracker is waaay bether. Currently have a 3 month old tobii5 for sale :P
Same here!
Can you share a little in detail what/why the ET5 was that disappointing?
@@talespinner4863 mainly poor tracking experience and hard to fine tune. Also lost tracking often when gaming. I got good tracking on my eyes I felt. But poor head tracking. Reminded me mutch of the tracking you can do with a web cam. Delayed tracking and lost tracking often. Ir tracker experience is mutch bether and super responsive compared to tobii5. I hope tobii comes with a bether unit in the future as I like the consept.
@@Niobifyed you had good light/no reflections/no fluorescent/super fast pwm flickering led’s?
I’ve found it matters a ton what environment you’re in.
@@Niobifyed has it been improved sinse ur comment? Would u say its worth getting now
is the blob rolling about the screen always there
combine with laser pointer for home dfence!
Nice Video, little improvement would be adding UA-cam Chapters :)
How is this too TrackIR 5?
I have a really nice VR headset, but I can't use it for games like DCS because it instantly gives me severe simulation sickness.
It's a shame I didn't know how limited I would be by this problem before I paid $700 for it. :/
This head/eye tracking seems a good solution to that problem. Shouldn't make me feel sick.
I might buy one, at some point. Just want to know how many various games it supports.
Hell for that price you can just get something like a quest 2 vr headset which is way more imersive.
No kidding. I got into VR, and ill cry if I go back to even track IR. VR isn't just motion tracking. It is a 3D visual and immersion experience.
@@icecold9511 even with a fairly new PC, i still don't think i can get into VR yet. i got the RTX 3060ti, which is relatively weak even in comparison to some of the older cards, so i dunno if id be willing to sacrifice graphical quality yet just to get into VR. on top of that i refuse to get a facebook account, so the oculus headsets are absolutely out of the question for me, so im basically going to have to save up for a Index or something from Valve, plus i need to upgrade my video card. So chances are i won't have a VR headset until 2024 or later depending on how long the massive price hike in graphics cards is.
@@PatrickRatman
Oh, I would only recommend oculus as a starter VR. Cheap in case you break it. My first week I learned to get glass protection and nearly broke my hand throwing a grenade. Found my desk.
But the immersion so massively makes up for the video loss. You feel like you're in an F18.
@@PatrickRatman
Oh, um...I think that card was the same card I started vr in, or was better. It may well be enough.
@@PatrickRatman Mate I've been running DCS, X-Plane 11 and Assetto Corsa Competizione old generation Intel 4790K and GTX 1070 in VR no problems. About refusing Facebook account? Why? You do you have a youtoobe account then? I'ts even biger corporation. I bet you cover your webcam too ;)
I got the same monitor - :D
I bought the eye tracker 5 and now I can't get it to work in dcs
Did you follow the set up instructions in the video? Also worth seeing if facetracknoir works better for integrating ET5 into DCS.
Product Update. Please disregard my previous comments. I bought the Tobii Eye Tracker 5 on Amazon. I've been trying to get the Eye Tracker 5 dialed in with DCS. It's way too jumpy at maximum zoom and it gets jumpy when I talk or breath alot. It's impossible to look at a distant aircraft at maximum zoom for ID purposes. It's also impossible to zoom in maximum for a stable view of a ground target. It's also impossible to zoom into guages and dials in the cockpit without jumping all over the place. I looked online and found some settings that DCS pilots use with this thing. Regardless of what settings I try, The Tobii Eye Tracker 5 is a handicap and it's a step backwards from the TrackHat clip Plus. I just initiated a refund on Amazon and I'm returning this thing. It was waste of time. I truly don't know if it will ever work at a high level for DCS.
thx
Music why do so many yt'ers make the music so loud!?
Jeeese grump, what you got that knife for, slicing up steers ?
That's not a knife....
I see you've play Knifey Spoony before!
I've been taught to always have a pocket knife because you don't know when you'll need to cut something like packaging or open something with it. :)
@@WyvernFalken top effort and great video. I’m seriously thinking of the eye tracker. Fed up of sweaty ears.
Too pricy ! what was the blueish blob in some of the screens ?
That is additional software you can download for TE5. Look up Tobii Ghost. Allows where you're looking to be shown on streams.
cool
casually sitting here waiting for hind tutorials from GR
Will start on Hind tomorrow :)
This thing will not work in dcs 2.8 with tobii experience 2.8.1. it's insanely frustrating

yup
I disagree with you guys. I have both and Tobii eyetracker(and headtracking) i s better. In Star Citizen its so much fun
