I use the Tobii while sitting on a couch in front of a 65” TV. The TV is 1.70m from my face, and the tracker is on a tripod on an ottoman 80-90 cm from my face. I positioned the eye tracker on the tripod so that when I look towards the TV, the tracker appears a little below the TV screen and I see the brightness of the tracker’s IR lights, that’s how you know it’s looking right at your eyes.
Tip: it took me a while to realize that the calibration doesn’t work when your TV is in high DPI mode/display scaling, at least when I did it. It works flawlessly after setting it up.

I have had the Tobii 5 for almost a year now, and use it with a 49" ultrawide monitor without any issues. It tracks my eyes from corner to corner as in your video. I turn off eye-tracking when in turbulence and trying to read the instruments, and when doing all the fiddly parts of an airliner startup.

Thanks Mark. I've been trying to get that answered as far as the size of the monitor. You got a 48 inch. I have replaced my three 27 inch with a 45 inch curved screen. I love the 45 inch screen more than straining the eyes on the smaller screens. Tobii gave me the impression that there is a limitation on monitor size. But you have demonstrated that with your 48 inch. Thank you so much. I will now get ready to purchase the Tobii.

I have a older one that you attach to your headset and it has the 3 led lights and then you use a old playstation camera. It works good. But it always has its limitations. I am amazed with how many games use head tracking. Some that are first person shooters. Very interesting. Maybe at Christmas I will pick one up.

Thanks for this video. I am considering going from primarily VR flying and sim racing to a large tv/monitor (48” or 55”) with head tracking for the increased visual clarity of a monitor, easier than triple monitors to run, less eye strain than VR, and ability to interact with my peripherals and this helped me see how it can work very well without the head equipment of the track ir device.

There are much cheaper/free options you can try to just see if you like the technology before buying a big boy eye tracker.
Software like FaceTrackNoIR is free and lets you use your cellphone's camera to track your face. It's not as accurate as an IR tracker (which are like $75-100~) or the Tobii ($250~) and has issues when your face is in shadow but, you know, it is also free.

I have the trackir5 with 32 inch 4k uhd monitor LG. It is close to VR experience. I use a headset to attach the track clip pro. My old 7 years pc ryzen 1800x asus 1080ti runs fs2020 at high settings at 45-59fps. Very smooth and great visual quality. My vr oled headset 2880x 1600 at 90 hz is good but my pc can run it only at 23fps at medium setting with texture high. I have improve recently the performance by simply installing a wifi 6e adapter bluetooth 5.3 and a psu 1200w gx-1200 seasonic. The pc is very stable with the blower edition 1080ti gpu at 65C and 98% and the cpu is below 50C at 26% usage maximum.

Excellent review. Display size is something I'm also concerned about as very few playing MSFS have screens as small as 27-30". Nowadays most serious simmers will go for 34-49" screens (usually ultrawide) or even larger. Another concern is the mounting position. Having a Honeycomb Alpha in front of me, I usually mount on top a tablet to use as a secondary monitor. This effectively covers the direct line of sight between eyes/head and Tobii. I'd very much like to mount it on the top of the screen if possible, but I read it's not doable... if this is true, it's a true shame.

Just bought one and tried it on my 48inch OLED. Initial thoughts are that head tracking works fine, albeit without the 'curves' of the TrackIR. Tobii REALLY need to add that. Eye tracking not so good with my thin rectangular titanium frame glasses. I find that looking centre screen the lower part of the glasses frame obscures the tracker bar. I obviously need to experiment further with distance and settings but I would say that with the addition of sensitivity curves it would be a great replacement for TrackIR and not needing a track clip is a big advantage especially in summer. Eye tracking? Maybe on smaller screens, not sure on larger ones. EDIT: May need to get some large round glasses for sim flying to help the eye tracking.

I've found that blocking an inch of the screen at the bottom doesn't matter at all in Flight Simulator. I suppose there are some games in which that would be a deal breaker, but I need to position it that way in MFS in order to get a good line of sight over the Air Manager screen that sits atop the Alpha yoke, and it's quite satisfactory.

Then i associate the centering to a mouse button to assogn the view wanted in fs2020. I am very satisfied with the track ir. The clip pro get better reault that the normal clip, which is more basic. I recommend the clip pro and no window in the back. Window on the side is ok. But reduce the backlight is mandatory.

@@CC-gt3ro Your comments address about 80% of the complaints I see about Trackir and I have to say after using for over12 years it comes down to how people set it up. I have helped four other guys set their's up properly when they hadn't even done much work with the tuning function. I am willing to bet many don't even know the impact of the smoothness and speed functions in the tuning. I have the Tobi as well as the Trackir and as said in the review it is a personal preference. I believe the Track ir I have performs more smoothly with more range especially head turning to the back of the AC and also the ability to pause with TiR wasn't available back when I bought the Tobi which BTW is considerably more expensive than than TiR. You pay the price and make your choice on systems however my point about inability to tune TiR stands. Another point with my large screen I sit 1200mm away and have no issue seeing it and the second 27"screen (displaying the AC systems) alongside at that distance.

As i have a 49" monitor wall mounted if i position the sensor in the recommended position (Top/Centre of monitor) i lose connection looking up and down, simply repositioning the sensor to be mounted on my desk Lower and nearer and to the left) i can look everywhere in a MSFS A320/A330/737 cockpit, or My Python/courier/Cutter in Elite Dangerous.

9:27 if you can see the eyetracking does not work at all because it is only for screens up to 30" and the software centers the max view from 30" to the center of your 48". Normally - when you move your eyes to the left or right border of your screen - the picture should move completely...so you can look around the whole cockpit like in VR but thats not working with screens larger then 30". Very sad and I hope for Eye Tracker 6 which can use bigger screens.

I bought the tobii eye tracker 5, but after about 2 weeks of using it Im not sure its for me. On one hand it makes simply looking side to side, like when during taxi, but in the cockpit I find it to be fairly frustrating as it moves around and makes manipulating the knobs etc pretty difficult. I assigned a flight stick button to turn off/on at will, as well as to reset the position. That was something else that was distracting, it needed reset quite often. I fly mainly the fenix a320, and I also use an ultra wide monitor. Also during descent and landing it was a bit disorienting that every time I glanced down to my PFD, it would move to follow me, so when I glanced back up my visual alignment of the runway would be moving. I slowed the reaction time in settings etc, but just couldnt seem to find that sweet spot.
So for me it seems that I prefer to have multiple camera views setup on flight stick button.

I did have one question, when I use the Toggle Head Tracking OFF the view always returns to the pilot view. I was wondering if you know of a way to Toggle Head Tracking OFF but retain the current view. For example if you are focused on the GPS and want to enter information it would be nice to turn off head tracking, make your changes and then turn it back on. Mark I was so close to ordering until I read your comments below in which you mentioned possible import taxes. Whilst I think you said you personally did not have to pay anything things here in Northern Ireland can get a little complex with duties due to the Northern Ireland Protocol which basically places a trade border between mainland UK and us. Some companies refuse to ship here due to huge amounts of paperwork and costs. I did see the Tobii 5 on Amazon UK which also has 20% discount and although its £299 normally it comes down to about £245 which is close to the plus 8% tax you estimated. I have been looking at the flex mount which is to be fixed under the monitor but my LG 48" screen only has a few millimeters of space between the bottom of the tiny bezel and the central part of the legs which extend out to the front. There is also a headphone jack (I dont use) and the screen controls are there too if your remote fails to work. I see the flex mount can have the front magnetic plate angled up or down so I am wondering if it can actually be stuck upside down? This might be a dumb question, but if you look to the edge of your monitor, just tilting your head, you have to keep your eyes towards the center of the screen? So if you move your head to the left, your eyes have to go to the right?

    • @danceswithsheep3058
      @danceswithsheep3058 11 місяців тому +1

You can set up the tracker so either eye or head tracker has dominance. In your question you are setting up a deliberate conflict and tracking will go either left or right to a lesser or greater degree depending on settings. If eyes have dominance then with your head turned left the screen will move right if you look that way.
I generally have my left/right viewing dictated by head movement but when my head turn reaches a certain point so, for example, I am effectively looking out the left window I can glance left and then the picture moves further left to allow me to look behind without moving my head further. I move my gaze back to be looking out of left window again and then move head to centre view. For looking up and down priority is set so a glance shows me instruments.
Experimentation is your friend and the settings linked in this video a great start.

I took the plunge to upgrade from TrackerIR to Tobii Eyetracker 5 about a year ago. The Tobii Tracker hardware is “next level“ in comparison. It’s terrific. Where the Tobii Eye Rracker falls down is in the software. The TrackerIR software is much better. The Tobii software provides for a limited number of settings, they are all linear with no ability to control the shape of the response, and the critical pitch and yaw in adjustments are just one slider. That said, the aspect I have struggled with the most, is the setting for the position in the cockpit, when returning from pausing the Eye Tracker. This position needs to be manually set, and what you see when you unpause is, in my experience, completely different from what set; so you have to pay the the little game of trying to guess what the outcome will be. Mark, you have probably mastered this, perhaps you could consider providing a more advanced video on sensitivities, and setting the unpause position, that would be extremely helpful as Tobii Eye Tracker 5 is a truly “game changing” product. 👍

I've watched your videos on VR kit with great interest but I've never fancied having a brick strapped to my face to do so! (As well as the loss of visibility to see my panel switches and other controls.) I've tried headtracking using opentrack and a videocam but it's a cludge and doesn't work well so the Tobii Eye Tracker really appeals. I'll be ordering one in the next week.
One thing that needs clarifying: when I order it from Tobii, presumably it will be shipped from Sweden. So what import duties and VAT charges do I need to bear in mind in addition to the discounted price. I'm sure others will want to know too!

    • @SimHangerFS

I bought the Tobi and immediately wanted to cancel as I discovered it is incompatible with my 48-inch monitor, but the order shipped in record time through Amazon. After 3 hours of use, the decision became clear to return it. Tracking was never natural, and you feel dizzy and need time to get used to it. The overhead of using it is way more than the advantage it brings.
The return could have been smoother. They ask you to ship the product and pay for shipment and restocking. I am sure they have a high return rate.
I believe most people who speak highly about the Tobi got their units free as a promotion. As a technology unit, it looks cool, but the use does not feel natural or valuable, at least for me. Imagine having coffee, and the tracking is on. The tracking should be off most of the time and turned on as needed. This may work.
