Here's part 31 of my first playthrough of Baldur's Gate 3...
On today's episode we head into Cazador's Palace where Astarion must face his former master one final time. As the choices weigh heavily in his hands he must decide. Will Astarion ascend and become the strongest Vampire in all of Faerûn? Or will he finally break the endless cycle of torment and pain?

LOVE that they brought that line back, from after you let him first drink from you. Listening to the contrast of it then and now is just amazing. This game is brilliant.
2:17:00 OH MY GOD!!! That was sooooo stressful! The insight check KILLED me!
I'm always emotionally exhausted after this quest. Every time I'm so afraid for him. The fact that the game manages to make us care so much about the characters is incredible.
Now I need a little break. OH MY GOD! The insight check was so horrible! My poor dogs starred at me like OKAY.... SHE'S GOING NUTS! 🙈

I had to chill out after because of the emotional toll it took on me, every time I think the game can't surprise me it does

Cazador fits the typical silly Villain McEvil stereotype and it was hilarious to see him the first time around 😅

The ending is sooo worth it! You absolutely get his character and saw past his power-hungry front. Ughh, so much growth and he's so sweet and happy! We love to see it!! Amazing job, Kiki!
Except that ascension is what he wants, and what he chooses for himself when played as an origin character and not forced to ask Tav/Durge for permission.
Astarion's power hunger is one of his key character traits. Something that was present before undeath and was apparent even after 180 years of enslavement, when you first meet him. Already on day 1 (him talking about CONTROLLING the worm). Dominant 5% traits occur naturally in about 1 in 20 people. This regardless of ethnic or social group. They don't dictate a person's alignment or behavior.
There is a nasty railroad in castle Szarr, heavy-handedly trying to effectively condition the player to force Astarion to remain a (comparatively weak) spawn, rather than gain considerable knowledge and power and actually live again as a living vampire. Larian really hates the idea of male companions pursuing power, same pattern in Gale's case. And in Gale's case, his ascension doesn't harm anyone. He refuses to obey the goddess who tried to force him to commit suicide, and becomes a god instead.
This is not a problem for the female companions, Shadowheart can become the chosen of a goddess and mother superior of the cloister in Baldur's Gate without any serious disapproval. Lae'zel can be one of the leaders of the Gith revolution and likewise meet no condemnation. Larian definitely have issues here.

@@luciazaviacicova3594 I am not talking true versus false. I am talking about what Astarion chooses for himself if he has the agency to do so. In a Tav/Durge run, he is in the uniquely unfavorable position to not get to make his own choice, but needs the permission and assistance of another to ascend. Compare this to Shadowheart, who the player can influence throughout the game play, but still leaves the final choice up to her, rather than making it YOUR DECISION and not his.
The relationship between lycanthropes and vampires varies from setting to setting. In WoD it is for the most part hostile, in Underworld lycans went from serving the vampires to being their enemies. In D&D their relations vary. D&D vamps can command mortal wolves. Much like clan Gangrel vampires can command many animals including mortal wolves in WoD.

42:06 LOLLL I can relate! When the girlies ™️ are out for brunch we usually have one drink for hydration (usually water), one for energy (coffee or tea), and one for fun (mimosa or cocktail). 😎💧☕️🥂

P.S. love that you got to experience Astarion’s scene for the first time as his LI. Adds so much more depth. The only more outstanding way to experience his journey is if you are Dark Urge and his LI - there’s truly nothing equal to the level they connect and the scenes and thoughts they share ❤
P.P.S. I’m so excited for next episodes since you’re just so close to the end of the game! I was procrastinating like crazy at this point, I was scared to finish since you can only finish BG3 for the first time once 😢 But afterwards I discovered Durge run and girl, you just wait and see how fun it’s gonna be!

This is the one I've been waiting for!!!! I am so glad you got this outcome for him! Such an emotional one urgh (did you loot cazadors body too btw? didnt see if you had!) All those spawn in the underdark tho, going to be a nightmare haha
@geh323 me toooo! Got me right in the feels but I don't regret my decision at all, plus the fact that Astarion thanked me 🥹 literally made me crumble
Yesss I looted Cazadors body and I know the spawn are going to be difficult but I couldn't justify killing them
This quest is one of the more morally challenging decisions in the game. I feel like there's no *right* answer when it comes to what to do with the trapped spawn. My Bard was the "save everybody" type, but even she still ultimately chose to destroy the thousands of spawn. And... even having seen the alternative, I think that was the right decision. The consequences of freeing them might not be felt immediately, but its going to be a genuine problem later on. A year from now your character is going to get an angry note from her mindflayer friend demanding to know why she unleashed an army of vampires into the underday. 👀
Incidentally, the fight with Cazedor (Cazador?) can be made a whole lot easier if you use the Daylight spell. x3 Poor Shadowheart, having the most powerful anti-vampire spell in the game at hand but not allowed to cast it. 🤣 It doesn't do any damage, but it prevents him from using a lot of his more powerful abilities -- such as the mist form that was giving you trouble!
Regarding the werewolves. The "Werewolves vs Vampires" trope is mostly a product of the Urban Fantasy genre, I think. Series like "Underworld" and "Twilight". There's no natural enmity between vampires and werewolves in the Forgotten Realms setting, in any case. A Vampire Lord has power over all sorts of nocturnal creatures, and explicitly has the ability to summon wolves in the TTRPG. Its not too much of a stretch to imagine that they would be able to command the loyalty of werewolves!
Edit: Oh my god, of *course* you defiled the Graveyard with your perverted vampire-lust. What else could you possible do to violate the sanctity of that place?! Mortarch Scryre is going to hold a lifelong and ENTIRELY JUSTIFIED grudge against your character. 😭
@sanctimoniouslocke3941 that's what's so interesting about this quest, you really have to think about it because sadly none of those poor people ages to become spawn but they are and they can be dangerous especially seen as there's thousands of them and I know not all of them will be good but I'd like to think that most would.
