Charlie Brooker's coverage of the Kony 2012 viral video, as seen on 10 O'Clock Live for March 14th 2012, including the round-table discussion that followed.
@ukstanduptv100 You have my utmost respect, I also apologise! I was under the pump with study actually hehe, but seriously good on you for being a lover and not a hater, so refreshing!
I watched Kony 2012 on UA-cam and at first I didn't really care but now looking back, it's stupid. #1 The LRA is no longer in Uganda. Making awareness of Kony in Uganda is like making awareness of Hitler in Europe. #2 This has no meaning to us. I mean whats the likelyhood of us seeing Kony eating at our local McDonalds or shopping at the local Kmart in say the US, Philippines or New Zealand. #3 Ugandans hate it. When they showed it in a village in Uganda, they threw rocks at it then left.
I never said anything about donating to Invisible Children or invading Uganda, and I agree with you about Museveni 100%. The person I replied to, however, implied that Kony wasn't culpable at all, which is what I objected to.
That's a little cruel to berate a entire gathering of people who manage to show even a smidgen of compassion for their fellow man, especially in this day and age...even if the person who persuaded them to is crooked as hell
I know you wrote that comment over a month ago but Fenton is the dog in the UA-cam video "Jesus Christ In Richmond Park". Look it up if you haven;t already, it's hilarious.
it's pretty par for the course nowadays that it would take a late-night variety show to actually spend the 30 seconds in front of google necessary to find out just how skeevy the whole invisible children thing actually is
For 3 it was reported by al Jazeera. Look up: 'Uganda Speaks in response to Kony2012' alJazeera and 'Kony screening provokes anger in Uganda' al Jazeera
Joseph Kony was one of the most outstanding officers this country has ever produced. He was a brilliant and outstanding in every way and he was a good man too. Humanitarian man, man of wit, of humor. He joined the Special forces. After that his ideas, methods have become unsound. Unsound. Now he has crossed to Uganda with his Montagnard army, who worship the man, like a god, and follow every order however ridiculous. Well, you see. In this war, things get confused out there, power, ideals, the old morality, and practical military necessity. Out there with these natives it must be a temptation to be god. Because there's a conflict in every human heart between the rational and the irrational, between good and evil. The good does not always triumph. Sometimes the dark side overcomes what Lincoln called the better angels of our nature. Every man has got a breaking point. You and I have. Joseph Kony has reached his. And very obviously, he has gone insane. He's out there operating without any decent restraint. Totally beyond the pale of any acceptable human conduct. And he is still in the field commanding his troops. Hey, man, you don't talk to Kony. You listen to him. The man's enlarged my mind. He's a poet-warrior in the classic sense. I mean sometimes he'll... uh... well, you'll say "hello" to him, right? And he'll just walk right by you. He won't even notice you. And suddenly he'll grab you, and he'll throw you in a corner, and he'll say, “do you know that if' is the middle word in life? If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you, if you can trust yourself when all men doubt you.” I mean I'm no, I can't. I'm a little man, I'm a little man, he's. He's a great man. I should have been a pair of ragged claws scuttling across floors of silent seas... He can be terrible, he can be mean, he can be right. He's fighting the war. He's a great man. I mean. I wish I had words. The man is clear in his mind, but his soul is mad. Oh yeah. He's dying, I think. He hates all this, he hates it! But the man's uh he reads poetry out loud, alright? And a voice! A voice. He likes you because you're still alive. He's got plans for you. Nah, nah, I'm not going to help you, you're going to help him, man. You're going to help him. I mean, what are they going to say, man, when he's gone, huh? Because he dies, when it dies, man, when it dies, he dies. What are they going to say about him? What, are they going to say, he was a kind man, he was a wise man, he had plans, he had wisdom? Bullshit, man! Am I going to be the one, that's going to set them straight? Look at me: wrong! You!
That is very much so not the definition of cynicism. Criticism is to judge and analyse, Cynicism is an attitude of jaded negativity. Often resulting in, but not restricted to a distrust of the integrity or motives of others. As you see, Criticising is the act of Questioning and judging motives, cynicism is to distrust motives and integrity due to past experiences. Don't worry, it's a common mistake, rpx1979.
the people of invisible children have been going to my high school for years. the video they showed was going to africa and talking to victims but most of us fell asleep
I live in a rural Australian city and there were KONY2012 posters put up on a few street light posts here, but I was hugely amused to see that they were mostly bearing the American donkey and elephant and carried a message of uniting. I don't want to look down on the local teens, but I'd be surprised if the majority of them even knew what that symbolised and how irrelevant it is to Australia.
dunno if it's still there but there used to be one of those with the elephant and donkey on a roundabout in Hereford. It was up for years, maybe it still is. always found it amusing
I just want to say Kony is my hero and I try to be like him in everything I do. Even went to recruit some local kids so I might be able to achieve my ultimate goal... Being the next Kony!! Kony FTW!!!
@bagetka007 it's sick, even if it's just a joke - you don't even know what you're saying, small mind, blurred vision, it's sad that you have to go through life like that, all the best with it you'll probably die very happy and fulfilled and your compassion will no doubt have a domino refect and reward you plenty
how do you even know that Kony is a bad guy.. You have no doubt yet I bet you have absolutely no idea who he even is.. Taking a standpoint just because someone said he's bad is just as wrong as falling for the whole scam.
DAMN CHARACTER LIMIT - CAN’T TEAR THIS APART! Sorry kids but your plight is out of date! Criticism of Kony2012 is often fair, insightful & constructive - yours isn’t. At least Russell is doing something he believes in (not sitting on his self-righteous ass joking about child soldiers!) I’m NOT religious AT ALL & I think your attempt to discredit Russell on that basis is cheap. Any manifestation of altruism & compassion is conducive of progress. I do agree with you on Jolie. Seriously, wtf!
@ukstanduptv100 It's okay, you know when you express an opinion and you feel okay about people disagreeing because you know that your view is well-reasoned, well-informed and fair... yours might be too because it's actually okay to disagree you know. The problem is with people who cannot handle other points of view. That's your failure. Not mine. So no fail on my part but thanks for your useless input :-) How about you say something constructive and meaningful sometime?
Amazing journalism.
+killer DLS The power of satire.
I wish he had talked about the founder's break down (maybe it hadn't happened yet) it was kind of hilarious.
Well said! Thank you Charlie Brooker.
Thanks for clearing that shit up. The budget of the video made me assume it was somewhat accurate but it just didn't sit right.
He'd get strong republican support for his militaristic stance:
"Kony 2012 - putting 'infant' back in 'infantry'".
What happened to 10 o'clock live ?? Great show
haha Jimmy's laugh at the end when they cut to the break!
lol "the Fourth estate" sounds like some kind of creepy underground movement like Project Mayhem in Fight Club.
i love and worship this man
Ah, thank you soo much for clearing that up. For a second I actually cared!
The fourth Estate & Jump first, fear later & World Tour 2007 - Blazing Trails again -videos are removed from youtube or made private.
First time i've had the chance to say this but... FIRST!!
Charlie Brooker is brilliant, and this is very interesting. That is all.
He hasn't been in Uganda for SIX years! Talk about child soldiers, it's like the media in America are fucking FIVE! Couldn't they Google him???
@ukstanduptv100 You have my utmost respect, I also apologise! I was under the pump with study actually hehe, but seriously good on you for being a lover and not a hater, so refreshing!
No, I mean cynicism - as in being questioning and looking at the motives. Not criticism.
This is EXCELLENT!

"The Fourth Estate" sounds eerily like "The Third Reich"

This is 3 years too late, but this deserves and upvote.
@Bletzkarn Most charities I've worked with/for have been closer to 45-60%, such as the RSPCA, NSPCC, WWF, Red Cross etc.
Kony 2012 sounds like a presidential campaign slogan. Kony for president!
@Netleyyyy
He has a way with imagery few can match.

the word ''Cult'' scares me.

112 million views??
@rpx1979 I believe you spelt criticism wrong, as I see no cynicism. And criticism is good, otherwise people will give money to anything.
This Kony charity thing looks worse than I remember.
...or possibly like the expression for the press in common use since the eighteenth century.
Any time, Kid!
This might be a silly question, but who's Jan Moir?

Hmm... nice thing there with the raised arms. Vaguely familiar. Can't think why.
It's a sequel.
What's with all the cynicism? This is a good cause. This is funny, but should be taken with a pinch of salt, just like KONY 2012.
It's pretty well documented that Joseph Kony is a bad guy. That's not what the debate is about.
I just want to say Kony is my hero and I try to be like him in everything I do.
Even went to recruit some local kids so I might be able to achieve my ultimate goal...
Being the next Kony!!
Kony FTW!!!
8:57 He laughs just like Doctor Cox from scrubs!
Invisible Children= People's Temple 2.0 featuring Pastor Jason Russell.

I love this! And Jimmy's laughter is so fucking weird
how do you even know that Kony is a bad guy.. You have no doubt yet I bet you have absolutely no idea who he even is.. Taking a standpoint just because someone said he's bad is just as wrong as falling for the whole scam.
@e3ovuziotica that's because invisible children is pulling vids down.
@tooyjfwn Amen brother!
@theylive23 exactly
That's a cheap blow. Don't agree with the riding on cars part.
It *was* funnier when he was sitting shouting at the telly. Shame he swallowed the celebrity spooge-rag.
@Netleyyyy so...is he much superior then you?

hear all about the propaganda about KONY on your SONY
Support something that really matters. For an example: avaaz.org
Lol. Yeah Obama and Romney got nothing on Kony.
@tooyjfwn congrats for abiding by the ideas of armchairs pundits as fully as others did for Invisible Children, you're as bad as they are.
Stop AFRICOM, preferably.
