    This is definitely on of the best videos on UA-cam that shows the bar, and talks about the drinks and experiences.

    "Who are we offending? Headshrinkers??" - best line of the video, and the video itself is gold! It's been ages since I've made the trek down to Anaheim and I really should make reservations and hit up Trader Sam's again.

    You hit on a number of observations I also had. Grog Grotto is much more theatrical than Enchanted Tiki Bar. Enchanted has much better cocktails. I think the difference is that Orlando's clientele is almost exclusively tourists, most of whom have never experienced tiki, so they're served boat drinks to meet expectations. In Anaheim, you have a lot more locals attending with a longer history of tiki bars and craft cocktails.
    The biggest realization came on our visit to Grog Grotto pre-COVID. We're enjoying the theatrics (which seemed not quite as relentless as those you experienced) although the drinks were disappointing. I'm chatting with the bartender/skipper, who is pleasant and engaging, and mention that we're driving to Fort Lauderdale the next day as we have reservations for the Mai Kai. The bartender says, "What's that?" That moment I realized that the bartenders at Grog Grotto are cast members, nothing more. They're playing a role. They're not tiki people. At Enchanted Tiki Bar they *are* tiki people and I've had great conversations there about rum selection and mai tai specs. I deeply appreciate a lot of what goes on at Grog Grotto, but Disney's attitude that "tourists expect boat drinks so we'll give 'em boat drinks" really diminishes the entire experience.

    It's surprising how different both are. Both are nice and all, but I have to admit the Orlando Traders just has this odd "TGI Fridays" feel. Just a bit too much bling and fluff.

  • @ultimatemaitai

    Too generous to Grog Grotto on the atmosphere. To me the difference is the quality of the Bartenders, where at Disneyland they are true Bartenders who can do a rum sub for a Mai Tai or go off menu on a tiki classic or their own “secret menu”. In Disney World I asked for a Mai Tai with simple syrup rather than agave syrup and THEY DID NOT HAVE SIMPLE SYRUP. The skippers seem like wannabe Jungle Cruise skippers rather than bartenders and servers.
    An alternative rum Mai Tai made by Skipper Maddie at Enchanted Tiki Bar is currently in my top 5 Mai Tais of the year, it was that great! A Skipper Nate Mai Tai was second in 2022.
    You’re making me want to stay at the Poly at least for a day on my next trip, though. So many cool spaces there.

    Great video dude! I feel like I could tack on another video to every point you've made (both good and bad). My thoughts on Tiki Central earned me a forever dislike from a few Disney individuals - but the one thing I will say here is that Grog Grotto has too many shows that last too long, I think 2 minutes for their Uh Oa.

      I get where you are coming from. I also think it's sorta off when Spike thinks there too much gimmicky stuff going on at the Grog Grotto, while he's missing shrunken heads and complaining about PC culture.
      But then again - in the couple of years I've seen Spikes shows - he comes off as a tradtitionalist. A tiki guy instead of a tropical guy.

    Great work Spike. Really hit the nails here. If I could, or should choose a place to visit among these two, it would be Trader Sams. The Grog Grotto outside of Orlando is a circus and too much noice and show appearance for me...but then again, Im 60 so that might be a reason...or really not😄 I just want a Tiki lounge with good drinks and food. If I want a show with rubber ducks and water squirts, I go to Sea World.

      I will say this for Florida’s bartenders, they are good. If you ask, they’ll go off-menu and make you some classics. But you have to work a little harder to do so. That big horseshoe bar in CA gives you more FaceTime with the bartenders.

    I agree that Trader Sam's Anaheim is the best, I missed the three cavallaro bartenders, Christian Kelly and Roy, sadly Christian has moved on to another bar, I missed the daytime drinking with Christian when it was slow he would start asking the customers different Disney trivia which was awesome he will be missed but at least we still have Roy and Kelly keeping the magic alive at Trader Sam's.
    I love getting a King Kamehameha my tie off the secret menu from Roy or getting the original sour version of planet of the apes from Kelly. Do chivalry my appreciation of friendship good service and most awesome cocktails I gifted him with a Tiki for his home bar and Kelly knows me as the pirate so these days I go to Disneyland not to ride but to drink.
    Of all the tiki bars I've been to across the United States my two favorite are Trader Sam's Anaheim and Trader Vic's in Emeryville.

    It was cool, those old beer handles at the Anaheim Trader Sams were copies of the carved figures that are at the Enchanted Tiki Room Patio. Trouble is they got broken quite a bit. I think the bar at Florida is more of a tourist setting hence the plastic mugs and cups filled with very weak cocktails (much like on the Disney Ships) . All in all I prefer the Trader Sam's in Anaheim. BTW Spike, Lake Buena Vista, not open to swimmers) got removed to make room for the larger themed pools because the old pool area was rather small and there was trouble with crowding.

  • @jimt9245
    @jimt9245 День тому +1

    Great breakdown ... Thanks for the heavily lift and unbias analysis.
    Living much closer to Trader's Sam Anaheim ... I definitely see it as being more accessible and being able to build familiarity through frequent visits of the Culture, Staff and Drinks. If I made it out to Orlando - I would probably just make the trek to the Mai Kai in Fort Lauderdale instead. But you nailed the dinner theater vibe of the Orlando location like it was Medieval Times or Wild Bills.
    Trader Sam's Anaheim seems more like a community where as Trader Sam's Orlando is a one and done. Do locals in the Orlando have the same affinity for that location?
    Great video as always!

    Another great episode and an interesting one. If I was ever to visit America I don't think either of those bars would be on my itinerary. Why? mainly because the atmosphere in both places looked a bit off. For me, a tiki bar should be mysterious, dark and menacing, like being in a jungle while also captivating in its beauty as one would expect if you were stranded on a tropical paradise alone with only the beautiful Wahines for company like you would have seen in the Mai Kai and Kahiki. I would be looking for that experience of escapism from the outside mundane world which I felt was missing here. Both bars looked a bit underwhelming and I was particularly put off by all the "bells and whistles" every time a cocktail was served. It was overkill and would quickly become boring and annoying. I love the idea of a ceremony but do it tastefully and sparingly to keep it special. Otherwise Spike my man, I think your review was spot on. Aloha!

    Let me say this, from a former southern Californian who lives on the East Coast and frequents Orlando now, you have a California bias in this video. Disneyland and Disney World are 2 separate beings. Disneyland is much more of a vibe for Californians which i didn't understand until I left the state and saw it from the outside. Florida is for families traveling from far away. A lot of them on once in a lifetime trips. California is mostly locals even if they don't go a lot. They are from a more local culture in Socal where tiki is more popular. Tiki is not as popular in the rest of the world where Florida grabs it's visitors from. Therefore, Florida is more for fun and for tourists. Not as much tiki purists.

    Anaheim "Sam's" is way too bright (didn't used to be), several of the decor items that have been removed didn't really need to be.
    And the skippers in Anaheim are the best around, you can order off menu, always a flavor adventure!

    I didn’t realize there’s a whole sub culture just dedicated to just tiki
    -one of my minor gripes here is that you’re underwhelmed by stuff on the ceiling on one location and then also underwhelmed that you get an entire light up god in the other. While also lamenting political correctness for taking away a god from the ride.
    -this is the first video I’ve seen from the channel and I loved the production value and look forward to checking out more.
    -I do get where you’re coming from with the patio at grog grotto but you also have another pool bar and an entire tiki resort to explore. And at the Polynesian u can hangout and see the fireworks over the castle and they pump in the show music so if hit that time it seriously upgrades the score

    • @BreezewayCocktailHour
      @BreezewayCocktailHour  2 дні тому

      I totally was underwhelmed by the stuff on the ceiling at the ETB but I wasn't underwhelmed by the light up guy. I was just annoyed that he went on for so long. 😂 it's a great feature, I just think that it's too drawn out. But it's also my opinion, so take that as you will. 👌
      I'm sure seeing the fireworks at the Grog patio is probably great, but take that away from the place and it's just a patio by a lake... which is very nice, but I don't think compares to the patio at the Disneyland Hotel. Again, just my opinion though. Thank you for a very well thought out and respectful message. 🙏

    Only thing I disagree with is that the drinks are good at Enchanted Tiki Room…they’re not. I consistently get the worst drinks there compared to all other Tiki bars in So Cal. But they’re not terrible, just mediocre. But the theming is so cool it makes up for it.

      @ I’m sure they are fine folks. It’s not an attack on them personally. But when I go to Bamboo Club, Strong Water, Royal Hawaiian, and others, I always consistently get better tasting drinks than Trader Sam’s. Only other place I’ve been that’s maybe beneath them for drinks is Bali Hai. Again, they’re not bad drinks by any means! Not even Bali Hai. It’s just when I rank them compared to other tiki bars they fall short.
