    This cat is living the life. Has an exotic jungle, regular food and water, comfy beds and boxes, no predators/enemies, its own human servant. I don't think our species even has an equivalent of this level of winning at life. lol

    Jan, what I appreciate most about you - in addition to the wealth and clarity of information you share in each of your clips- is your enthusiasm! It is contagious! There are times when I question my sanity for investing so much time, effort and money into my plants, and then I watch you and I get inspired all over again to keep going. In fact, I do have a small melano that I will put on a moss pole and see what happens. I, too, like a good challenge…😊 Thanks again.

    Nice work, Jan! Yeah, this plant gave me it's own crisis too. Initially, my cutting refused to grow! Can you believe that? And then, I learnt that Melanochrysum is heat-sensitive.
    So, I sent mine on a little "vacation" in a shady, cool jungle (secret location... 🤫) & after 3 months, when I came to pick it up? Boom! It took off with 3 new leaves! Yeah, that's my whacky journey with any touchy Philodendron... jungle rehab! 🤣

    I bought a 10cm tall melano a month ago, after 1 month its double in height with 3 new leaves. I grow it indoor with basically 16 hours under grow light every day. Only turn it off when I go to bed. I just moved it to my bathroom with the hope that it will be happier with high humidity in the bathroom. What I love about it is it’s shooting new leaves constantly, even the new leave is not fully uncurled, another one is already sneaking out.

    I agree, I am finding it hard to size up my melanochrysum especially when I live in a very cold climate so getting the right humidity, warmth and light for getting bigger leaves takes a bit of extra effort and new leaves sometimes get stuck in the sheath. Other than that, I am impressed with how hardy this plant is. I once left it in soggy soil and it just grew no problem. I don't have any pests issues with this plant so far. This is generally a very healthy and robust plant. I can see why they use it to produce hybrids. It is hard to kill, but it takes a lot of time and effort to make it look nice.

    interesting your experience with this plant. I bought this one, gloriosum and verrucosum all at the same time and all three were roughly the same size young plants. The gloriosum and verrucosum have put out four leaves in the time the melano has put out one and a half, I thought I was doing something wrong but I guess not. Being in south Florida, my plan is to plant this outside under the oak tree, along with the verrucosum, and just let them scramble up. Hopefully it will have put on some size by spring to where I feel comfortable planting it out.

    Holy crapoli, is that a gorgeous vittarifolium hanging behind you?! I’d LOVE for you to share anything you can about your personal experience with caring for it. I’ll scour your videos to see if you’ve already done so just in case you’ve already covered it and I’ve missed it. It looks SO happy just there in an open room without a humidifier near by. I’m pretty much generally obsessed with stappy leaved anthurium and philodendron so even if it’s not a vittarifolium, I’d love to hear from you about it. I’ll be receiving my first Philodendron Melanochrysum later today, so this video was extremely helpful. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your experience in a clear and thorough way 🤗

    I really really love my melano. Even though she´s groing slowly I´m happy over every new leaf I get :) Since I live in germany winter is quite dark and cloudy here so I´m not sure if it´s comparable to your winter. I´m still experimenting with giving it more light over the winter months since atm. it only gets around 1 hour of direct light (if the sun is showing). :)

    Thanks for sharing Jan. I think I will eventually try one of the hybrids simply because I haven't got the ideal growing conditions. Our weather here in the UK isn't as glorious as yours, although we enjoyed a record breaking summer in 2022. I'm not holding my breath for a repeat in 2023. I love this series because it helps me make up my mind about which aroid plants I can realistically attempt, and saves me wasting money at the very least. Such a beautiful velvet philodendron! It's been a dream plant for me for some time now. Living in the cooler part of the States the velvet leafed philos dont appreciate my home's situation. If and when I can have a happy micans...(3+ years deep now and micans still struggles in my winter) I'll definitely try its larger cousin, until then I'll live vicariously through you! Btw Brad's schananagins were awesome today 😸

  • @mindbreaker84
    @mindbreaker84 2 роки тому

    Hey Jan, I can 100% confirm the situation. Thank you so much for this quality contend.
    For me in germany the melano struggle starts in summer, when the temps go up and the humidity down. The leaves get stuck and nearly each of them has to be freed with a tooth pick from its shell :P
    The Melano also seems to store its leaved a bit more special than other. There is always a kink, where the petiole connects with the leave. Often this is very sensitive and can result in snapping the leave off while freeing it.
    No other of my philodendron has such issues. My largest head cutting has a similar size than yours, but need very long time to start its grows. Unfortunately the first leave rotted inside the cataphyll. Luckily an new one was present nearby. I do not use moss poles just the grow sticks to let them climb. I know moss will work way better but I think I'm to lazy to set these up.

    • @sydneyplantguy
      @sydneyplantguy  2 роки тому +1

      That is definitely a low humidity and/or inconsistent watering issue. I’ve experienced it before as well but it seems to be struggling less as it matures :)

    I've just bought a melano and given it a moss pole. If its refusal to size-up quickly is the biggest problem, I'm completely fine with it. If it stays small, then it basically looks like a micans and I've also always wanted a micans, but for some reason, I've only ever seen it for sale maybe once in my whole life, in London when I was just visiting. It's allegedly "common", but I've seen far more melanochrysum for sale than micans. So, I'm basically looking at it as though got a micans with extra nice venation and that has more of a potential to get big. (I've seen mature micans in the dome at the Mt Coot-tha botanical gardens in Brisbane, and it kind of loses its velvet too, which is a bit disappointing, but I did see a weird leaf with two central midribs, which was cool.) I'm happy either way to be honest. I'm just such a fanboy of melanochrysum. I've got six growing stems at the base of a moss pole (I bought one with two, then found another one with four), so it should at least be lush ... hopefully. If a stem races ahead of the pack and isn't sizing up, I'll probably make sure it's properly rooted and then do a cut a bit lower down to slow it down a bit while also adding another stem.
    I know you keep saying that 'Splendid' and 'Glorious' are much easier, but to be honest, for me, nothing beats melano in appearance, whether big or small, and I really appreciate how modest it is with space until it gets absolutely huge leaves. All of my other moss poles are things with interesting shapes (Monstera, Epipremnum, Rhaphidophora) and I really want something velvety, but it's a bit of a squeeze, so it needs to be my favourite and it just happens to be one that stays pretty narrow most of the time. The leaves on yours are the perfect size and still on quite short petioles and I've only seen them get massively long petioles onces the leaves are huge. (Maybe overcrowding on my pole will trigger longer petioles though?) 'Splendid' and 'Glorious' are beautiful, but I don't really want something I have to tie up to stop it filling my balcony and I really like the long, narrow, anthurium-like look of melano. Appearance and space-wise, the only other big velvety one that for me in Frage kommt is P. gigas (until it gets completely enormous ... semi-mature is best), but melanochrysum has a nicer leaf shape in my opinion.
    Has anyone hybdridised P. melanochrysum x gigas? I can't find mention of it anywhere, but that would have to be my favourite possible combination. Who knows though; genetics does some funny things, so maybe it would end up quite different. Going with the name theme, it could be Philodendron 'Gorgeous', Philodendron 'Amazing' or Philodendron 'Awesome'. 🤣
    Final question: Do you think it will be fine on my very sheltered Brisbane balcony through our mild winters? I've never seen any outdoors in Brisbane, but possibly only because it's been rare until recently. I've seen virtually every other Philodendron outside, but nothing velvety. Your gigas being outside in a Sydney winter gives me hope. I don't have much space inside, but I might bring it in on the coldest nights. The only plants I've ever lost to the winter here are some Nepenthes and a friend lost her Cissus discolor.
    Sorry for the essay! I'm just so excited! 😬 - bensbotanicalbedroom on Insta

    Splendid has been a trooper all through winter with constant growth, and now really sizing up, but Glorious went into full dormancy! She is now just growing a second leaf since I bought her in Autumn, but I can tell its going to be double the size of her others, so I'm expecting big things over Spring/summer..I'd have no hope sizing up a Melano, lol

    Great video and info. As always, I appreciate you going over your whole journey…the good and the difficult. I love the mirror❤. Just curious, does it help add reflective light into that darker corner"?

    I love my melano as well and am trying every trick I can find to size up the leaves. I am wondering what you feed it with where it isn't growing in soil and also how often you have to water the moss pole?

    thanks for another great spotlight. I have a tiny Melanochrysum and it always gets some spots on leaves even the new ones due to extrafloral nectaries(I guess that's the case because I can't find any pests on it.the exact same thing happens to my Micans too). does this happen to your Melanochrysum too? because your plant's leaves look so spotless and perfect

    Jan - i love your videos, they have really inspired me to follow your moss pole chop and extend method. Occasionally i have an issue (with velvets) where their leaves get damaged on the plastic covered metal mesh of the moss pole, do you ever get this and how do you get round it ?

    Thanks for all the info, great video. The new leaves on my Melano keep getting stuck, damaging the leaves and petiole as they emerge. Is this common with this plant?

    • @enrico4400
      @enrico4400 2 роки тому +1

      yes it's a common problem if you don't give it enough humidity

    • @sydneyplantguy
      @sydneyplantguy  2 роки тому +1

      Enriconis right, it’s low humidity and/or inconsistent watering

      @@sydneyplantguy I'm a chronic overwaterer and always have to hold myself back. It could very well have been the lack of proper humidity. Since then, I have purchased 2 humidifiers for the living room and more light.

  • @mrsnobodyxx

    Question here, so I know you’ve said it’s easier to put a cutting on a moss pole than it is with a well established plant, would it work the same way if you cut your mother plant all the way down as if it were the size of a cutting basically? Like would it attach to the pole easier?

    • @sydneyplantguy
      @sydneyplantguy  2 роки тому +2

      Sure does :) the idea is that new growth can take full advantage of the moss pole by attaching straight away :)
