  • Just had my first track day in my Porsche Cayman GT4 at The Ridge Motorsports Park. I finally got a chance to put the GT4 through its paces. I give my commentary on the track layout, describe how the car behaves on a circuit and address some common GT4 criticisms. Make sure you turn up your sound for the full experience!
    Track day organized by Revscene / The Speed Syndicate.

    I think people are so hung up on gearing, because that is literally the only thing they can find to nitpick about this amazing car.

      Thanks for your comment, Frank. I think there is a lot of validity to what you say! Someone started the gearing quibble and the rest followed along.

    Not even done with the first video and I already sub'd. You do a very good job talking while you drive, describing every sensation, I feel like I am in the passenger seat. The editing is done so professionally, as if by someone who loves watching track day UA-cam videos. :P
    I am moving to Seattle from San Francisco, and I hope to attend an event at this classy circuit.
    Looking forward to more videos. Thanks for the content!

    Nice driving review! I sold my GT3RS and I was happy with the new ND miata. Have had Porsche cars for over 25yrs. Sold it all at some point in my life. But now after I watched your video. Just talked to my sales at Walter Porsche. I will order the 2021 GT4. Nice red color.. cheers 🦅🦅🇺🇸

    I love your gt4 I think it's absolutely stunning. I think most of the frustrations about tall gearing stem from reduced acceleration. It is also a strong possibility that it was geared this way intentionally to not make it quicker than any 991 911. In a sense, it was neutered when it didn't have to be and I think that's why many are so critical. If other current model Porsches were geared similarly I don't think people would be nearly as critical. Great video, I really enjoy every single one of your uploads.

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  8 років тому

      +Dream cars I enjoyed reading your insightful comment! I think there is validity in what you say. Previously, other Porsche models were always geared similarly. The 997 GT3 always had tall gears. They only lowered them for the RS. In this generation, they did have the luxury of shorter gearing all around thanks to PDK an that extra 7th cog. I think with the introduction of the 911R's 'lowered gear ratio' manual gearbox, we will see it this tall gearing go away in the next generation of optional manual GT3s at least, if not the GT4s.

    Amazing driving and great audio capture. Re dash cams, I just turn off the crash sensor, g-sensor, since as you pull corners or go over bumps it will fill up your memory card with files that can't be overwritten till you manually clear them.

      @driveopolis  8 років тому

      +goons123flofy Thanks! I did figure out how to change the settings after the video. The G Sensor could not be disabled fully but it has a low setting. Will need to figure out if it gets tripped next time I hit the track.

    Awesome! I also have a Carmine Red GT4 (just got it two weeks ago). I agree, the gearing is perfect for a car like this; this is not a muscle car. I find the car amazingly alive, engaging, and makes me smile every time I drive it. Very capable car, but is still forgiving, but most importantly, tells you that you made a mistake. I need to break it in before it's first track day!

    • @jasonhowes
      @jasonhowes 8 років тому

      Hi Jason, great name BTW. ;) How did you "break" yours in? My dealer said it was ready to drive hard off the lot, but do you think there's another level of brea- in before tracking? If so, what is your procedure?

    • @jtharmon12
      @jtharmon12 8 років тому

      +Jason Howes, I am keeping the revs and speed changing and being pretty conservative, but not treating her with kid gloves either. She's got 200 miles on the clock today - I would like to see 1000 miles and an oil change before I track her, and the first event I will probably be conservative and short shift. I know my other P-cars have been "tight" and have really started to change performance and mileage after 10K. This is my third P-car and they need to be driven - and driven enthusiastically. To be clear, I am thinking about the total car, and not just the engine. They are super reliable cars and are easy to work on.

    Great video! I got my GT4 last fall and had to winterize it pretty much after delivery (New England owner) so I haven't had a lot of time in the driver's seat. Are you using the auto rev match in this video, or doing it al natural. If the latter, do you think you have a big advantage over the computer and if so, how did you learn to heal-toe correctly? Thanks!

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  8 років тому

      +Jason Howes Thanks Jason! I have to admit I was using auto-blip in the video. I am pretty proficient with heel and toe, but nothing like as flawless and consistent as the computer. I learned to heel and toe in my Miata back in the day. One of the best cars for learning because things happen slowly, the pedals are placed perfectly for it and all the controls have a low effort and weight. You can see a little heel and toe action in my ND Miata review video on my channel.

    Awesome video as always! Love your content, I really do! How many miles your car has that you took it on the track? I'm just curious as my dad got a gt4 aswell with 400 miles and we are waiting to track it. We are not going to wait for the full 2k miles. +Jitsslo Productions Thanks and it was! The beep beep is from a Thinkware F750 dashcam that I'm testing for them. Unfortunately, every time I pull a high G turn it trips off the collision warning sensor in the dashcam. I need to change the sensitivity for next time, was hoping to pull some footage from that.

    Cool review. Nice video production. GT4 looks ok, you might find yourself getting bored quickly tho. Your gt3 was a much more challenging car and at least for me this is 90% of the fun. The challenge. I like non user friendly. One suggestion, try to keep your hands on the wheel 9 and 3 to reduce shuffling. You'll find this nets a smoother drive. Stock brake pads? If so I'm surprised they didn't light on fire. Re gearing. Try driving that track with a regeared Porsche (preferably gt3 variant) and you'll realize how badly these things need to be regeared.

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  8 років тому +1

      +echo echo Thanks for your comments and insights. I think what you say about the 997 GT3 is indeed valid. I do generally keep hands at 9 to 3 for corners where I know I'll be hooked up, but I couldn't resist sliding this car around a little bit because it's fun. Shuffle steer works much better anytime I get into a hairpin or powerslide. Here's another video of me sliding and playing around with the GT4's balance:

I race chumpcar there and tracked many Porsches and bmws. On my other UA-cam account I have many videos of me in my 6 GT3 stripper cup wannabe. Ex10psi is that UA-cam account name but I'm not sure you'll find it that way? The ridge is a great track. I instruct for Porsche NA so I could ride with you as well and give u a few pointers but honestly for my benefit to ride in a new gt4 :) I'll be at the ridge this weekend for a double header chump race. Did the brakes and tyres last? Do you have to replace them after the track day?

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  8 років тому

      +TheJelllyo They lasted surprisngly well. By day's end I had only modest wear on my Michelins. Also, the front tires did not roll over on to their edges the way I often see with hard driven BMWs. The grip feels very evenly distributed right along the outside edge of the car and the tire wear shows it. Lots of brake pad left. I'm very happy.

    • @driveopolis

      +jo23bulls I let the BRZ go last year. Long term, still a fantastic driver's car. The only thing that started to notice over time was that it's a bit lacking in rear traction. That's its only vice. Still on my highly recommended list and I still enjoy driving the 86s. I saw a few of them at this past track day looking menacing.

    Nice vid and a great car. I still can't believe you let go of your 997 GT3 though. Obviously a GT4 is an amazing car, but isn't GT3 just a bit more special? the 997 one was the last great analog 911.

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  8 років тому +2

      +steaksaretasty The GT3 997 does still have the advantage of the more special sounding and feeling mezger engine and the better feedback from the hydraulic steering. The GT4 does make up for it somewhat with a louder stock exhaust and a much better gearbox (both position in relation to the steering wheel and a much better shift quality). The GT4 chassis is also less prone to being unsettled by mid corner bumps, dips and crests. It's more user friendly and just as capable. I agree with you 100% that the GT3 997 is one of the last great analog 911s. That said, I love my GT4 and don't have any regrets. If you're in the market, the 997 GT3 is absolutely a valid alternative and if you can find a mint one it's probably more collectable. They are two different flavours of the purist Porsche experience.
