That is one of the best swapenstein ratrods I've seen in a long time, and you continued the handbuilt tradition! l hope it has better heat than stock...
Funny you mention heat... The Subaru won't keep its cool without a heater core, so you're forced to have real deal heat, unless it's blocked from entering the cabin.
they way the car looks interior exterior, i love it. classic cars should be in this condition for me. it adds flavour, not the candy paint. great job man
I love the lace paint job on the roof, which gives a very 60's Bellflower kustom influence to the car. If I had one, I'd make it into a 60's Bellflower car, then stick a Subaru BRZ boxer motor out back. How did you sort the cooling out, as the new engine's water cooled?
Miroslav Szabó He didn't, the person that started the "leaving it for dead" process is the one who ruined it. This car could have been scrapped, but his vision and passion drove him to restore it into this, a cool, unique daily driver built for no one else but himself.
'Ruined' to some people means he didn't either leave it for them to have and do nothing with it, or didn't restore it stock. Maybe with a mighty 40 horse or something, I can just imagine the power... Perhaps some drum brakes on the front as well. Which is all the excitement you will get, trying to stop.
now that is a dream car. i would maybe go an inch higher in snow country. tastefully down, sweet. if i win the lottery i know who to contact for a rebuild!
Love the car man, I have a 1969 Karmann Ghia, it is in fairly good condition. I am looking to put power into though wondering if I could get some help on what to do exactly
Too low and I hate the lace and the doo doo stain on the front. But great body work and drive train. Is it still considered a drive train in a rear engine car???
+suzan sullivan there are quite a few companies that make engine swap kits. motor mounts as well as transmission conversions. basically you need a car and the subie engine and buy the kit. then just time.
A bug or Ghia is still the best car on ice and snow. Turbo or not. Get ready for a tear down of that Subaru though. Gonna need head gaskets water pump etc. How bad does that valve adjust sound now?
first impressions: a complete butchery of possibly the most beautiful body ever created. love the paint job, but those wheels are out of place on a classic, it is way to low to the ground, and that exhaust pipe is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen. if you want to rice a car, at least have the decency to do it to something like a POS civic. however your craftsmanship is way up there, and you did amazing bodywork
I mean, the entire point of a build like this is to defy convention. I'd love to do something like this someday. But I do agree that the exhaust pipe is absurd. I bet it makes a good reference point for backing into parking spaces, though!
I keep coming back to this video. Even in 2020. My inspiration for my 68 Ghia. I’m almost taking my 1st drive in it.
Kudos to the owner for doing all that work. The lace paintwork is awesome, I haven't seen that done in years on a car.
I can't believe the negative comments....usually from people who have never built anything!! I love this car and the effort to build it. Fantastic!!
Looks great, I have a stock 58 one to restore, 1st RHD one ever made
stock height does look lame , but that's too low . an inch higher and it would still look sick , but you could drive it .
I agree. I'm not a fan of the rims, or camber either.
+David James Astro Supremes, Radirs or wires wheels would look great with the lace paint job.
jerry henderson i agree however his engine and transmission was raised a few incges so it doesnt scrape the oil pan everywhere
i got a 68 ghia and i havent had any motivation to fix it but this makes me wanna work on it haha. very cool!
way to low for me, but mad respect for the work and dedication :)
Low isnt for everyone, thats for sure. But I like them low!
I like cars that are dropped for the sport look and for better handling but this is too low. Nice work though.
Try driving a car lowered like this and you will see how much a pain in the ass it is !
Great car mate. I like your philosophy of keeping the rust smudge to keep it real. Well done.
I would use an analog clock for the turbo, other than that, it is a nice project you've got there.
My dream first car! Looking at a '65 Ghia with the intentions to nearly copy this!
now that is a bad ass conversion. Nice job Mike !
Thank you!!

top effort your struggle made a great car thank you for your work .
they way the car looks interior exterior, i love it. classic cars should be in this condition for me. it adds flavour, not the candy paint. great job man
AleksanderJBL thank you sir!
Mike Mcconnell awesome build. I'm doing something similar with a low light ghia and the Subie 6-cylinder. :)
@@UncleBasil about your low light... How far have you gotten?
@@A_Cowboy_called_JackRabbit Body work at this point which has slowed to a crawl due to COVID.

Love the duct tape on the dashboard. Classy guy... What's his name? Red Green?
Looks like it fits much much better than a regular VW
Cool. I see the AB plate. Im in Edmonton.
fuck my mind is already set on getting a red hardtop miata........now im changing my mind again
Badass cool. The exhaust obstructing the tag would get you many tickets in America though.
dam how do you get over speed bumps looks like 1 inch off the ground
Wow so much work!
Esse podrão na frente, ficou ótimo!!
What did you have to do to make the wheels fit??? Beautiful car!
Any chance of retrofitting a later fully independent rear suspension and correcting the camber?
fabulous job I have a 69 Ghia and I love it!
Awesome ride Mike, love the style!
thanks!!
Where do you get the transmission adapter plate ?
^^ commenting, so when you get a response I do as sell
Kennedy engineering products
+DeNy Average this is a false alarm comment.
LOVE LOVE LOVE the Ghia!!!
Not a ghia fan but this is pretty badass!
Dude, you got style!
I like the phonedials, are they 15" diameter 7" wide et52?
I may put some on my ghia, wondering if you did any tricks to get them to fit
Great Video.. The one and only VW Karmann Ghia... #VolkswagenKarmannGhia #VWKarmannGhia #ClassicVW
Ruel Spot in the morning
Great job! I'm in love
What wheels are those? What are they from, Porsche 924?
Why 3 persons dislike this ??? Just Awesome !
Simply because he ruined it.

bunning63
Or maybe it's 'cause he lowered it too much and left the rust on.
Ben Rosenzweig No such thing as too low, and there's no problem with rust! Rust is awesome! I've seen this thing in person, it's gorgeous!
now that is a dream car. i would maybe go an inch higher in snow country. tastefully down, sweet. if i win the lottery i know who to contact for a rebuild!
Great stuff. I cant go for the slammed look though. Always looks collapsed to me but thats just my opinion.
Beautiful car

Hey Mike how much mod did ya have to do to get that boxer motor in?
Y does the hood never seem 2 shut completely on VW?
Did you sell this?
Respect and motivation!
I love the motor I would Like to know how he completed this ..
+suzan sullivan there are quite a few companies that make engine swap kits. motor mounts as well as transmission conversions. basically you need a car and the subie engine and buy the kit. then just time.
great car :) whats the song at 1:30? really fits in haha :)
+Alex Role It's a stock song. I believe it's called "My Favourite Mistake"
Nice ride! Always loved the lines on the Ghia, I would dump it just that. Not sure about the motor setup though. is it connected to the vw transaxle?
Yup! Custom bellhousing mates it to a VERY fortified VW 4-speed.
Does your clutch slip under boost, mine does and I just got a stage 2 Kennedy setup
Not sure why he thinks lowered bodies look better.
It's got to be a rough ride.
.porche?
Appreciate the hard work, just don’t care for stupid ride height.
Where did yo put the radiator?
It's up front behind the grills
Mike Mcconnell Very cool. How did you plumb it inside or under the vehicle? Did you use hose or pipe fit it in? very bad ass car. Good Job!
Looks hot
Are you using the original transmission?
I'm using a custom geared Rancho Performance Transaxle

Kind of worried when you’re driving. You mean like a Harley whether it’s 30 years old are brand new I know that feeling
first impressions: a complete butchery of possibly the most beautiful body ever created. love the paint job, but those wheels are out of place on a classic, it is way to low to the ground, and that exhaust pipe is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen. if you want to rice a car, at least have the decency to do it to something like a POS civic.

on the other hand, its nice that it has more power, and at least the interior is close to stock.
I mean, the entire point of a build like this is to defy convention. I'd love to do something like this someday. But I do agree that the exhaust pipe is absurd. I bet it makes a good reference point for backing into parking spaces, though!
I feel the same the way
That thing has to be destroyed on the bottom.
Travis Lee
Basically a modernized vw engine. What’s wrong with Subaru?
Great car great fun.. Thumbs up..
nice, I think it is riding too low.
dub dynasty ftw love the insta
Awesome ❗👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻
F’kn sick!
'murica. Make an oldtimer to scrap.
Love it
Sweet
nope
i want to buy a karman ghia body and put a porsche engine on it lol
Jerico, did you buy it? Did you go Porsche, or Subaru, or did you keep it Vdub?
And this is how you rebuild a Karmann Ghia and then RUIN it.
its ruined because its enjoyed daily?
No. It's ruined because it's 20cm too low and has 1m too long exhaust pipe.
Miroslav Szabó Not your car. He can do what he wants, so shut the fuck up.
No, the VW police are out!
If the exhaust was 999mm, would it comply? I mean I assume you have checked?
Car looks bagged
FUCKENGROOVEN, way cool VWDUB
tooo low
Too hipster.
Just like a regular car. What planet are you living on? It's not!
The wheels and stance ruin that car.
Puke!
Great car mate. I like your philosophy of keeping the rust smudge to keep it real. Well done.
