I'm 81. The 1967 Karman Ghia I drove while in the Air Force in the late sixties is my favorite car ever. You could very easily heel and toe shift it. It had front disk brakes. Thanks to both I avoided killing a Mexican field worker blindly crossing the road in front of me. I was going 60. I dropped to stopped on a dime heeling and toeing the down shifts and using the front disk brakes. He just finished crossing. Don't think he ever noticed me. I adjusted the valves every 1000 miles, a very important engine need because it's air cooled and the time the valves are seated, transferring heat, is very critical. I also cheated and advanced the timing a little which made that 30HP respond instantaneously. I learned later in life as a VW employee that the 1967 "beetle" engine was totally devoid of defects. The only engine year ever to achieve that. I am so happy that I had one to enjoy in sunny southern California.
My first new car was a 1965 KG cabriolet. Loved that little beauty. My family outgrew it and I always vowed to own another. In 1990 I bought a beautiful red coupe from a retired nurse. I drove it from Tennessee to West Virginia, twice a year for ten years, (1400 miles round trip). Around 1997, I did a repaint, removing all the windows and replaced all the rubber, dropped in a 2100cc engine, www tires and a complete reupholstering including headliner and carpet. Around that time I bought a 1961 cabriolet junker and after three years of blood, sweat and tears it is a stunning beauty! Now, as I will soon celebrate my 85 birthday,I still say the KG is one of the most beautiful cars ever designed. Thanks for the video!
That’s a great story! Sounds like you really love and take care of the car! It’s such a beautiful car and finally starting to get some love from the younger generations!
I rescued my 69 ghia from a crusher in Oakland when I was 19... then dropped a Porsche 911s motor in it... I’m 39 now and despite all of the hot rods and modern sports cars I’ve owned over the years, nothing has ever came close to the aesthetics styling beauty and raw visceral performance of my ghia! She has and always will remain, my first and greatest love! 😍
I fell in love with the Ghia when I was ten years old. When I saw the neighbor washing her Ghia on the front curb, I thought to myself, when I grow up, THAT'S the car I want. Of course, they were out of production by the time I was old enough to drive. But I never lost my love for the Ghia and would always be thrilled when I saw one on TV, in the movies, or - rarely - out on the street. Finally - FINALLY! - I took serious steps to find one 30+ years later. Hit the jackpot with a smokin' deal and have been SO HAPPY ever since!! Love, love, LOVE my Baby Ghia!! 1969 Coupe. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I just picked up one 1970 for 2k with no rust everything in the Car and ran when parked. We will start later this year after we finish our 60 f100 panel truck. Love you video and even more excited of what we have.
I had two Karmann Ghia's and my favorite memory is going through the mountains during snow storms while everyone else was pulled off to the side of the road. The model was probably the safest snow driving car ever.
The secret: The engine was in the rear, hence, the weight was centered over the driving wheels. It would be years before front wheel drive cars became more common where the weight/traction ratio advantage was returned.
Just finished restoration on my '69 Karmann Ghia convertible, did an ice-blue color exterior set against beige/tan interior, loaded with a 2273cc engine, lovin' it! Wish I could post a pic

Get tons of looks not many people know about it! Started a little minor modifications replaced exhaust the pipes were nasty new stereo last one didn’t work and speakers didn’t work! Gotta put some sound deadening material in cabin and hopefully new paint job after sanding down the few rust spots !
Oh wow congrats on the car that’s a good price for the car! It’s crazy that people don’t know that much about these car! I think they a really beautiful! Good luck with the car! Hope it comes out great!
I would love to see it? Ours wàs a 69 Ghia. Body shop repaired rust in floor pan. It was stripped down to the steering wheel. Took off bumpers sent them to be rechromed after turning them into blades with buttons. Cool. Frenched in headlights, antenna and turn signals. License plated frenched in also. Gas tank flap was covered up as we had installed a 5 gal. Moon tank under front hood. Removed back seat and curved it with plywood covered with shiny dove gray Formica. Where bottom of back seat was, it was built into a box with a lid which gave storage. The car went to the upholstery shop next. Took 2 Porsche seats and upholstery man added head rests with wood up the sides to create a slick looking seat. The interior was dove gray seats, carpet, dash everywhere. The paint came from Honda around 82 color, Hampshire green. The paint was a color changing as it looked blue to light green. Picture of it outside always had clouds from above reflecting in it. Under the hood was done in dove gray leather where the moon tank was as along with extra goodies screwed down for boom dynamite. Every piece of rubber was replaced with new. The car was lowered, done in black laquer. It lowered to 5 in. Off the ground. It had a pink stripe on both sides ending in a starburst. Inside the back area he wrote Ghia in pink. In the engine compartment we covered the sides and behind engine. I was the engine detailer before shows. I used q-tips on the engine and wrapped myself to behind engine cleaning with a mirror in my hand. I used my mirror alot on the engine. Car had the exterior paint on bolts. Oh, hisband designed a console that came out of the dashboard to the floor and straight back between the seats. Oh God, you can get carried away. We spent around $23,000. Overhauling it. It had it's picture and writeup in Volkswagen Magazine when we drove to Ennis TX car show. Won many trophies in 5 states. made friends with the Volkswagen owners, saw most of them at each show. It is a fun thing to have a great car that people loved. It was a daily driver, as first we hauled it on a trailer. That night we washed and on leaned the car. At the hotel I spent most of the night watching it so nobody would try to mess it up. That does happen. We took our shoes off and had clean towels on the carpet. Keep on working and you will have the joy of your life, make friends, and don't let anybody touch it. We were getting close to having to tedo the car. Husband went to a Barrett auction. When he drove on the platform the bids were low I shook my head no and he drove off. Then a man came up behind me and said meet me outside. We did. We sold the car for $7,000. The man was taking it to Kansas City to put in his showroom. I rubbed the paint on front fender and told it goodbye. Walked away and did not look back. Couldn't. N

It really depends how much you lower the car. Most cars are stock hight are not optimized. A little lower maybe stiffer but for handling it’s much improved
Greetings Andrew I have Ghia 69 coupe I am subtracting it little I have a problem how can you help me with I leave my car is filtering water through the glass of the doors I need help thank you
Your facts are a little off for sure. How can Ghia "steal" their design they used for Chrysler when Ghia came up with it in the first place. Borrowed would of been a better description for sure.
nice video, but most of the slammed and hot-rodded Ghias are just fugly. Some customization's fine, but come on - it's a 50s car (some'd say a work of art), not a vacuum cleaner. why the high % of slammed Ghias in comparison to contemporary Porsches and Alfas?
When I select videos I look for cinematic videos most cinematic vidoes just happen to have modified cars. People with non modified cars don’t seem to have interest in doing cinematic videos. Most videos that have stock cars are either for sale videos or reviews that have shaky footage.
@@ThreePedalGarage no offence meant, you did a nice job of portraying the Ghia. 😉 been driving one since '93 and usually I think 'to each his own', but as you say... not many originals in cinematic videos.
The Karmann Ghia is one of those cars that just suits the lower stance, they do look a little bit awkward and goofy in standard height. My opinion of of course
Design wasn't stolen. Ghia designed it, marketed it to Chrysler and they passed. Then they went to VW, and they passed. Some luck and a push internally made it happen for VW. So, yeah, not quite historically, but yessir, sweet little rides.
Classic Car Rescue Series Mario and Experienced Mechanic Bernie must see this Actual Real video about this Classic car Volkswagon Kamman Ghia ,besides the Famous Volkswagon Beetle.
He’s a kid? It’s serious Italian styling 50|50 German engineering~ Ghia designed it, Chrysler never acted upon on it. Ghia designed automobiles as would be eventually be realized. it came. I own a 72 Ghia Its center torsion bar balance the fluid dynamical forces as it drops slowly its height increasing velocitiy. The topological surface of the seamless shell single styling carves through the air squeezing downward then out the most slippery pathway. Add up the sum of the formed eddy’s-square it, add it to the forward momentum a nice gain of 1/3.01415 quanta repeat. Supremum~|nfinum Continuum
The first thing you say about 'stolen from Chrysler' is offensive. Get your facts right, if you want to talk about design houses. Ghia (Italian Design House) did MANY body designs, NONE of them 'stolen'. Ghia is Ghia, not owned by VW, Chrysler, or ANY other. I am glad Ghia did this design for VW, and I've owned a VW Karmann Ghia for several dozen years. BUT, you need to be acutely aware of history, if you wish to hold the interest of viewers. I, (and I might say 'we') don't need any revisions to the lines ONLY Ghia has contributed to Coach Building in the automobile genera.
Let get this video up to 50 like! I’d appreciate the support!

Damn Good job with this Video! I love the intro and You go into some good details all about the Karmann Ghia! Beautiful car overall!
Banch3z thanks bro! Love to car too!
Design was not stolen. It was made by a company that served both crysler and vw at the time. And it is italian.
Yep very true. The design was more repurposed.
Thank You Sir 👍
Andrew your knowledge base is outstanding and what a wonderful video of all time
the body of my 1964 Karman Ghia is not so good
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!hopefully you can get the body of your Karmann Ghia in better shape! They are such beautiful cars and should be saved.
What wheels are in the black karmen ghia
Lowering it killed it’s function of being a fun reliable car.
Oh a prerequisite for an automobile.
It really depends how much you lower the car. Most cars are stock hight are not optimized. A little lower maybe stiffer but for handling it’s much improved
How much for an early sixties Karmann Ghia cost one?
Exelente video
Thank you!!🍺🙌🏻
Stingray Corvette killa 😂😂😂❤
Hahaha looks wise yep! Performance wise lol probably not lol
Got a Ghia!!!
@@N.E.Singh7777 hell ya!! Congratulations!
I love my ‘68 coupe
Wander Feliz oh I’m sure! They are beautiful cars!
The rear end is similiar to the Chrysler design but that it, the rest looks different.
Ya agree they used some of the styling features from Chrysler but the car is different overall.
@@ThreePedalGarage Yet you're saying twice in the video that the design was stolen from Chrysler... That is just not true imo.
@@ibojohnson well I guess it just depends how you look at it.
The Volvo P1800 is another classic
Agree 1000% it’s a very cool car
Type 14, most under valued vintage VW.
Wide Five I agree 100%!!
Do you know what is the car body made of
David Calderon not entirety sure. Probably some kind of steel....
Yep for sure or repurposed but steal makes for more heated UA-cam comments lol
@@ThreePedalGarage If thats what you want to be known for. A factual documentary writer would be more respectable and less of a click bait clown. ; )
I Got A 1971 VW Karmann Ghia With A 1600CC Engine I'm Restorying This Year For Fun
dallas S great to see people restoring such a beautiful car!
@@ThreePedalGarage Ya My Mom Loved The Car Since The 80s And I Found One For Sale In 2017 So We Bought It And I'm Restoring It For Her.

@@ThreePedalGarage Ya Its A Nice Project, Cutting Out The Floor Pans Next Week
I just got mine I’m dying to drive it.
Hope you enjoy!!! They are gear cars!
@@ThreePedalGarage yeah I’m loving it, even tho I can’t drive it till my insurance figures out the vin number. Lol
Enjoy!! You're gonna have a blast!!
@@paulamorningstar1944 I do, have the fun of driving it is surviving the drive to the destination
This is my second favorite design, second only to the Aston Martin.
It’s such a beautiful car and not to many people know about it
Nothing stopping you from making it fast.
Lol just money would be the issue. 😂
Idea wasn’t stolen if it was Gaia’s idea to begin with. He went to another company and improved the idea. Still like your videos tho 👍🏾
Yep that is true. Just wanted to make an aggressive talking point that would get people talking lol
Hi I have one 1969 I love mi car
They are beautiful cars!👍🏻
Personally, I think the original is far more beautiful than the type 34 or is that just me?
I do agree with you on that it has beautiful lines and it is a classical design.
a family member wants to sell me one for 400$, might take up this offer after this vid
Yes you totally should or I will have to come and buy it
Woops, typo type 34 not 134
"You'd lose" is a funny thing to say about your car 😂😂😂
nice video, but most of the slammed and hot-rodded Ghias are just fugly.
Was not stolen the Design is pure Ghia..simular but still not stolen
Design wasn't stolen. Ghia designed it, marketed it to Chrysler and they passed. Then they went to VW, and they passed. Some luck and a push internally made it happen for VW. So, yeah, not quite historically, but yessir, sweet little rides.
I have one,and they are moneypits
Gilbert Sanchez I’m sure most Volkswagens are lol
Classic Car Rescue Series Mario and Experienced Mechanic Bernie must see this Actual Real video about this Classic car Volkswagon Kamman Ghia ,besides the Famous Volkswagon Beetle.
Homie looks high asf 😂
Supremum~|nfinum Continuum
the design wasn't stolen!
Just have to make the video a little dramatically
I've got two
The first thing you say about 'stolen from Chrysler' is offensive.
It was a joke lol. I know that lol
Itt is the modern day kg
Scirocco replaced the Ghia ...
too many of your statements
are wrong. The Ghia is about
A headlight width wider, keep
trying...😂
Your only aircooled video got you the most views …… old cars rule #saynotoplastic
Yep lol I have mentioned many air cooled cars in my other videos but haven’t specifically did a video on other air cool cars.
Where you all based out of?
@@volkstroke we are out of NY
Not stolen from Chrysler at all
I'm I the only one who found the background music very annoying.
I was trying to listen to the guy talking
@@jamespecoraro9871 ya this was one of my first video. I messed up the mixing sadly.
