      Alaska has many mountains that are very steep, and dangerous, also rivers that are very tricky and dangerous. Search and rescue was always pulling bodies off mountains and out of rivers during the 37 years I lived there. I even participated in searches for " self proclaimed experienced hikers and hunters " The terrain in any state can be dangerous, but when you add remoteness in the mix it compounds the dangers. Although I've shot 11 bears, and have seen hundreds of them, some of my worst close calls were almost dieing on rivers or steep terrain.

    When I lived in Alaska, I would fire a couple of rounds from my .44 into a stump or something whenever I was about to go into the woods. As soon as bears hear gunfire, they almost always vacate the area. We also talked really loud and yelled while walking down the trail. I never had a bear come anywhere near me when I did that.

    As an Alaskan, I'd say that the Savage Arms model-42 over/under .22/410 would be the absolute best SINGLE gun you could have in the woods. It's a great gun for small game and fairly easy to transport in an airplane. Ruger 10/22 takedown is also a good choice, but not in camo. That would just make your gun 10x harder to find should it get set down or if you've been separated from it for whatever reason (like a plane crash).

      holy crap! I have never seen this rifle. That is awesome for survival. Very safe too! one shot blam. Empty. Great for survival with other people who are not experienced or for children around, jeez, lots of check boxes. I have no idea why i never saw or heard of this thing. I am buying it for certain. Be my 2nd rifle aside from takedown 10/22. thank you for the mention. I have been turned on to the 410 shotgun. Paul Harrel shows how a effective a 410 is and how easy it is for people who might be older or light framed to use defensively.

      Chiappa makes what may be the ugliest gun in production, but very practical. Various combinations of .22/.22mag and .410/20 gauge/12 gauge. These things fold up so they would easily fit in a backpack. If I were flying over Alaska, I would want a version with the 12 gauge option.

      I could see a problem with the weight of the gun + ammo. It seems like all of the guns shown are both easier to carry around, and are more realistic to be carried if things go south unexpectedly. I’d definitely be able to foresee a world where I’m carrying a Glock 20 in my pocket as opposed to an AK. That said, the AK is good for its capacity and caliber. If I had the choice, and didn’t mind lugging one around, it’s definitely not the worst option.

    I'll tell you what I personally have carried walking into and out of my mining cabin when either the ATV or the snow machine (yeah, it's not a snow mobile if you are an Alaskan) has broken down. In my hands - not on a sling over my shoulder - I have a Marlin 336 in stainless steel lever action .45-70 with hollow point rounds. This will take out any predator (we have some rather large bears as you may have heard) in the world, as well as a charging bull moose (Don't think it's just the bulls that are dangerous. A cow moose killed a guy several years ago on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus.) On my hip or in a chest holster I carry either a Ruger Redhawk in .454 Casull or a S & W .500. Either one will take care of the same bear or moose. The long gun of whatever caliber that you stand against a tree while you take a crap in the woods will get you killed when Mr. Bruin, Monty Moose, or the Big Bad Wolf shows up to help you wipe your ass. I put my hat on the ground in front of me, place my pistol on the hat, and get to business. If furry friends show up, I have what I need at hand. Some of you UA-camrs may sneer and say I'm crazy, but this procedure has kept me alive and uneaten for many years. If you haven't walked Alaska's trails, you have no idea what you are talking about.

      Oh, by the way, Janusha, there was a rookie teacher in an Alaska bush village school. She went for a run soon after she arrived from the lower 48. When she did not return, the people of the village found what was left of her just outside the village. She had definately been killed and eaten by a pack of wolves. So take your civilized sidewalk-walking version of reality and shove it. Alaska is the real world, where big furry things with long sharp teeth are higher on the food chain than you and I.

      I 100% agree! If I could have only one firearm, it would be a medium-frame .357 magnum. I'm often asked by acquaintances what they should buy for their first firearm, usually with the idea that it will primarily be a nightstand gun. I recommend a .357 magnum revolver and explain in detail about the advantages of simplicity and versatility. Then they go to the gun store and the guy behind the counter convinces them to buy a Glock. Oh well.

    • @itsapittie
      @itsapittie 4 роки тому +6

      @@bruceleroy8063 Yes, start with mild .38 special loads and develop your technique. Leave one chamber empty and spin the cylinder so you don't know which one it is. That way it will be obvious if you're flinching or anticipating. When you have that mastered, try mixing a magnum or two per cylinder. After that, you'll be ready for regular use of magnums. Once your technique is good, you can shoot mostly .38 special and still do fine with magnums. Also, the sound and shock are actually quite a bit worse for adjacent people than they are for the shooter.

    Having an aircraft accident in Alaska or other remote area doesn’t necessarily mean a delayed rescue these days. With a GPS position referenced emergency locator beacon onboard, a personal locator beacon and/or a Garmin inReach, you aren’t going to spend a lot of sitting time waiting for a rescue unless the weather interferes. Frequently, walking out isn’t a viable option.
    My big worry is being injured and bleeding, which may attract bear or wolves. We always have a firearm and have gone from a 12 gauge to a 45-70, a .454 Casull and now a 10MM Auto in a chest rig. The idea is it’s survival if you’re wearing it and camping if it’s stored in the airplane. If the airplane catches fire, you may not have time to unload the weapon and survival gear. Wear it if you want to survive with it.

    Always carry your firearms ready when tracking. Never leave without 2 firearms. From experience I can tell you with out any shadow of doubt that a Bears will actually stalk you, then rush you, however, if your loud and pay attention, you can spot them ( for the most part). MY Main concern are wolves. They pose far more problems than Bears cause they have a tendency of being sneaky. They'll track you for miles, days and sometimes attacks don't happen right away. Sometimes they do mock charges then disappear into the bush. Other times they Run up bite then back off and let you bleed out. Reducing fight in you, so that the world doesn't have to fight hard.

    1. 22lr for shooting small game.
    2. .357 for a revolver and lever action - for defense and large game. I chose this so I would only have to carry one caliber for 2 guns.
    There are other guns but I would feel more comfortable with just these two.

    Greetings from Fairbanks...your scenario made me laugh. Honestly. That being said, I should say that when I head NORTH above to Brooks Range to fish along the Sag River, I DO take a firearm. (otherwise I have bear spray - less paperwork - just as effective). North of the Brooks Range, there are high winds and critters up there that are smaller and meaner than Kodiak Brown bears - Barren Ground Grizzly. At about 450-550 lbs, hungry and clever, they are not to be messed with. (Generally Barry is right, Brown Bears are shy. And lazy, but not BGG) They will do what they want up there to end you. When I fish up north, I have a 12-gauge 870 with me with Brenneke slugs. It the only place in AK that I feel I need it. I also have a .44mag Redhawk with 300grain Federal CastCore in a chest holster. Both are enough.

    I'd choose a marlin guide gun. 45-70 government. The round that won the west. And in the marlin you can either put a lightweight scope on it or leave it with iron sights. Decent ammo capacity and will drop anything you aim it at. That's what Alaskans use. For a pistol I would've ran with a 10mm glock or a S&W 686 4inch barrel 7 shot .357 magnum with 2 speed clips. I don't care much for concealment. Only problem is if my arm is broken or I need to shoot a squirrel I'm shit out of luck!

      The Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70gov is one of the best 'walk about guns' on the planet, the only complaint I have is they are somewhat unpleasant to shoot with full house loads, but that is hardly a problem under field conditions

    Few people realize how versatile the .44 Magnum is. You can run full house 240 to 300 grain bear stoppers or load all the way down to .430", 120 grain round ball, pipsqueak loads in .44 Special cases. A good .44 Mag with a selection of ammo will let you take anything from large animals to rabbits and birds.

    I've lived in Alaska for 35 years. I would take a pump shotgun over everything else - no contest. The 10/22 would be a great second gun for ptarmigan, squirrel, rabbit, and other small game. Those two guns would handle just about everything while providing protection and a way to get food.

    My California CCW daily carry is the Glock 20SF with Crossbreed Supertuck IWB holster in combat cut and a single mag carrier and it conceals perfectly, no printing and is very comfortable. When I'm out hunting I switch to the Crossbreed OWB holster in combat cut and a two mag carrier and it works perfectly and again is very comfortable. I've encountered bears which are shy and timid and will usually leave you alone and run away, one time, I encountered an old dirty rotten bear out in the Los Padres National Forest while deer hunting and he wouldn't back down, all it took was one warning shot with the 10mm and he took off so fast you wouldn't believe it. Love my Glock 20sf, truely a great choice for a wilderness walk out gun. Thank you for this very informative video Eric and Barry (RIP).

    If I'm pulling my gun out of a plane crash in deep Alaska because I have to walk for a few days to civilization, I'm hoping for a good semi-automatic shotgun with a red dot and maybe a flashlight on it. A friend makes shotgun slings from paracord, which is super handy and always useful. You're never going to need more than say 5 rounds in the tube, and I'd wager that 25 rounds with you while walking in the bush will last longer than you will. You can carry a range of ammunition(slugs, buckshot, birdshot, signal flares) for different purposes. I say semi-automatic because if you've got a bad arm, working a pump action might be more of a problem, but you can fire a semi-auto with one arm disabled with a little practice.

      Long guns are very difficult to aim one-armed. Try it sometime. and then try from the OTHER shoulder (weak side). Unless you have a pistol grip on a light firearm, don't count on having a convenient place to rest the barrel while you pull the trigger.

    • @bradsimpson8724
      @bradsimpson8724 10 років тому

      Doug Moose I spent a lot of trigger time with a Franchi SPAS-12 pump-action/semi-auto. If you're unfamiliar, there's a shepherd's crook that threads into the folding stock base, which doubles as a carry handle and a forearm rest. I've got several hundred rounds through that gun one-handed(and several thousand two-handed - that shotgun was re-barreled three times). While I wouldn't be in a hurry to bet my life on my one-handed shooting abilities, I'm perfectly aware of the difficulty involved, and certainly would select that gun over all others in a situation like the one described. For comparison, I've made attempts at firing shoulder-stock models one-handed, and things like a shortened barrel are definitely desirable there.
      A long gun also provides several other advantages over a pistol/revolver in a survival scenario.
      "The purpose of a pistol is to fight your way back to your rifle." I agree wholeheartedly, and in any situation where my life depends on it, a shotgun will always be the first thing I reach for. A pistol is just something to tuck into your waistband as a comforting reminder.

    • @connorsmith713
      @connorsmith713 10 років тому

      Doug Moose unless your arm has been completely broken off, you can at least raise it enough to rest the gun on it while you're shooting.

    357 mag lever gun for me, any day. Powerful, reliable, fast fire rate, light weight, very low recoil. The only situation it might be ill suited would be that large grizzly they talked about. But even then, 357 mag 180g soft or hollow point round fired from like an 18 inch barrel? I would still feel I could stand my ground against that grizzly in a worst case scenario.

      I truthfully have no idea what you are talking about. The scenario presented in this video is your plane goes down in Alaska. Loaded with slugs it would be formidable bear medicine and with birdshot you can get yourself something to eat. Shotguns have a capacity of five rounds with a short barreled version and I would feel a lot more comfortable with five rounds of slugs against creatures that mean you harm than say five rounds from a .500 S&W. I don't know about you but I can reload a shotgun rather fast.

    The Japanese DID NOT “occupy Alaska” during WWII! They occupied two of the Aleutian Islands: Attu and Kiska. Native Americans were evacuated from the Aleutians in WWII prior to the arrival of the Japanese garrisons. Some chose to remain in mainland Alaska after 1945. There were no stay-behind Eskimo Scouts in the Aleutians. Native Americans and Americans living in Alaska did form an unpaid Army militia (the Alaska Territorial Guard) to emplace caches of equipment and food along the route of Lend-Lease aircraft flying to and from Russia. They were prepared to rescue downed pilots and, of course, would have intercepted any Japanese infiltrators foolish enough to oppose skilled Native American hunters The Alaska National Guard now has a reconnaissance unit largely composed of Native Americans. Canada has Rangers who are First Nations people who patrol Canada’s North. Currently, they are armed with Lee-Enfield rifles and Canada is seeking a replacement rifle which can function reliably in the extreme cold of Northern Canada.

    Most of my friends a carried a .300 Win Mag / .338 and a .44 Mag.
    Should point out that the Japanese only occupied the Aleutian chain, and the native population was removed by our military and placed in the SE... some of the native men were sent back to hunt seals, while most were left to slowly die in their new home.
    We also teach people to shoot into the ground in front of bears since it confuses them, not into the sky. Another option was #6 or #8 birdshot to get them to leave the area :-)

    Try talking to an Alaskan hunting guide before you take their advise.
    First off more people are killed or injured by moose or elk the rare polar bear, black bear or kodiak attack is because people don't pay attention to where and how they cook food.
    If you see a wolf it's because you got lucky or you was tracking them.
    I take nothing less then a 30 caliber rifle, mostly a 300 WSM or plan 300 magnum long action bolt or lever action and a simple revolver .357 or bigger because the cold will freeze an automatic. Hell it will freeze your knife in a kydex sheath when you need it most.
    I might add if you crash and survive with a broken arm or leg. Stay where the plane is and use it as shelter and anything you can salvage because unless you're 100% healthy and an expert your chances of walking out are slim.

      the hey bear isn't to scare the bear instead avoid put it in a position where it feels threatened or startled. the problem with finding your way out is getting turned around a lot. there's a place in rural SE AK that actual NPS rangers get lost less then 15 mile between a town and a park and an ocean because of tree cover where you loose your sense of direction. and best wilderness gun set would be a 12 gauge and a .22lr, 22 for small game 12 for everything else. but that's just my 2 cents.

    Living in Alaska, i carry a 44, 45 and a .22 just about every time i go out into the wilderness. (Every weekend).
    though it is rare, berry is wrong. a bear, especially a black bear will attack you to eat you some times. Brown bears will also defend Salmon Streams, and moose/sheep kills from hikers. Brown bears have been known to pounce on campers in their tents to eat them. All of these are rare, but they do happen.
    One thing that is interesting to note, a 10mm won't do much to a bear with a hollow point bullet. you have to use a very hardcast lead or well bonded fmj bullet. The higher loads require a fully suppprted barrel do a lot of people change out to a lone wolf 6" barrel.

    i love your videos but, i really think you guys missed the mark on this one. A walkout gun no matter where should be multi purpose. a good 357mag carbine rifle or a longer barreled 357 pistol or something similar, I wish someone would come out with a simple 357/38 camp gun (keltec like) thats not a levergun that costs way too much

    Maybe I’m crazy here, but I’d take a Remington 7600 .270 Winchester. Then again I’m from Appalachia and the only bears there are relatively small and more likely to run off than attack. Then again, if you’re in the wilderness in Appalachia and you need to get out, just follow the water, you’ll get to a town within a day or two.

    I like the advice these guys give, it's very nuanced and realistic.
    also, if I can suggest another good option for a wilderness walk-out gun based on what ive researched. I would highly recommend the Smith and Wesson governor revolver, it can accept .410 shotgun shells, .45 acp, .45 colt, and .45 Schofield. it's also pretty lightweight for its size (less than 30 oz).

    As a fishing guide in Alaska I dont carry a shotgun. While yet there is some validity to that gun I carry a .44 mag. If i didnt carry that I would carry a S&W Governor, or a .357. All reasons being is I can access them if my plane goes down. A shot gun is very cumbersome to carry. The governor is an awesome choice because of the .45 long colt, .454, and .410 options. Take down guns are cool, but in a plane crash scenario i see some potential disaster because most firearms in a bush plane are stowed in floats or in a belly case, or on the struts of most bush planes....lastly there isnt alot of walk out options in Alaska. It can be done in some cases but its not common. So be prepared to stay put if you go down....this was a great video but i just wanted to add some food for thought.

    I was nearly a victim of a bear attack in Alaska . I had received the opportunity of a lifetime to go hunting with a group of doctors as I had quite a bit of outdoor experience and it had been made clear to them that the local guide they hired would not be responsible for anything more than game tracking . No cooking or other bushcraft . To jump to the bear , we had 5 days of school fairly successful hunting on the way back to camp the guide went back to his village to get the truck to pack us out the next morning and we returned to our camp . I had prepacked much of my gear for faster break down of camp the next morning and had started preparing dinner . I looked up from the camp table where I was making chili to see a giant bear that appeared to me to be at least the size of a Honda at that particular time . Suddenly I remembered reading, in a gun magazine, a quote from Clint Smith of Thunder Ranch , " Your handgun is useless , the only thing it is good for is fighting your way back to your long gun , which you shouldn't have put down in the first place ". There were several opinions on this column of how silly that statement was ( maybe having to do with the fact that this was printed in a handgun magazine). But looking to my rifle just inside the open flap of my tent it didn't seem so silly to me now . My first thought was bears are shy of noise so I shouted loudly and banged on a pan with the back edge of my Bowie knife . That didn't produce the desired effect , in fact the bear charged , right at me , bearly ( spelling for pun ) slowing down for even the campfire he trampled under foot . I started to make my way to my rifle and drew my revolver , a Taurus model 44 in .44 magnum . I shot all six rounds at the bear before I had reached my tent and more importantly the rifle there in . But the 44 had done the job , the bear turned away from me after getting way too close , in my opinion , then expired right on top of the camp table and our chili . So we ate MREs that last evening , because I come prepared . The next morning when the guide arrived he told me that I was lucky to be alive as that particular bear was a known rouge and had attacked quite a few people , some fatally , as well as horses and dogs . I gifted that 44 to a good friend of mine when his daughter had her sweet 16 party , because 16 meant that she'd be dating soon and every father needs to have a big gun to be cleaning when boys show our to take his little girl out on a date . If I were to go into the Alaskan wilderness now without my hunting rifle for whatever reason I'd carry 2 guns with me , my Taurus 444 Ultralite because it has .44 magnum power and isn't too heavy to pack , Smith and Wesson makes or made a scandium frame .44 magnum that is probably even better ( never fired one) but is rare to find and pricey to say the least . And a my Taurus/Rossi Circuit Judge in .22lr/.22mag . It's a 9 shot revolver carbine with interchangeable cylinders to fire both . It has a 16" barrel and a rifle stock to help you stabilize the gun in that broken arm, shooting from the weak hand scenario , the revolver action is the most ambidextrous I know of . This is a unique gun and I don't know another manufacturer that offers anything similar .
