    Quick note...when calculating question f I said "mass / density", I meant to say weight / unit weight.

      that really did confuse me! I just wrote it down as Ww/gamma water! I would have totally misunderstood this part but thanks for clarifying it :) you are great!!

    Hi. Its possible that I can get same answer of moist unit weight and saturated unit weight if the given soil sample is saturated?

  • @fluppie8750

    I solved my homework but the degree of saturation is more than 100%. I tried some formula you have posted but the answer is still the same. What do I do?

    I have a homework, the question goes like this:
    "A saturated soil has a moisture content of 38% and a specific gravity of 2.73. Find the void ratio, porosity, unit weight in KN/m3, and determine which type of soil it is."
    How can I answer that with only 2 given?

      according to the given soil, it said it is a saturated, therefore we can assume that the degree of saturation is equal to 100% or 1. by using the formula "Gs w=es", we only now have "Gs w=e"
      Given: Gs: 👍
      w: 👍
      Sol'n:
      * to get the answer of void ratio, e=(Gs)(w),
      *to get the porosity, n= e/e+1
      *Ysaturated =((Gs)(Yw)/1+e )(1+w), KN/m^3
      correct me if I'm wrong haha, i'm still learning rn...

    why gama water is equal to 9.81? where did you get it?

    • @AFMathandEngineering
      @AFMathandEngineering  5 років тому

      density of water is roughly 1000 kg/m^3. gravity is 9.81 m/s^2. calculate to find gamma water. sometimes people assume 10 for gamma water for ease of calculation. its a known constant.

    An undisturbed sample of a medium sand weighs 484.68 gram.
    The core of the undisturbed sample is 6 cm in diameter and 10.61 cm high.
    The sample is oven dried for 24 hour at 110°C to remove the water content.
    At the end of the 24 hours the core sample weighs 447.32 grams.
    Determine the BULK DENSITY, VOID RATIO, WATER CONTENT, POROSITY AND SATURATION PERCENTAGE of the sample........
    Can u plz solve this sum right now???

    sorry but is Yw always 9.81 or does it depend?

    • @AFMathandEngineering
      @AFMathandEngineering  5 років тому

      Yw is gamma water, the properties of water are constant for our purposes

      @@johnusifo4761 that was the moist unit weight of soil, not of water. Water is constant unit weight.
