      +SanCHEneering it's a great field! it's a very non precise science though...because of the variable nature of soils the best you can do is approximate with a large factor of safety most of the time.

      Thanks! Unfortunately we aren't geotechnical engineers so we can't really get too into depth on the more complicated principles, but we can definitely add some of the more introductory stuff to our video list. Thanks for the suggestion!

    At 0.09 , isn't that the rebound/unloading curve underneath the lab compression curve? And then the virgin compression curve should lie to the right side of the lab compression, originating at the bottom most point of the lab compression curve? I'm lost af

      Yea its more in depth than we could explain in a short video...it helps to read the theory portion of your textbookto fully understand. The curve you mentioned near the bottom is essentially the elastic rebound of the sample after unloading and the steep downward sloping portion is the virgin compression portion.       So for soils with OCR = 1, the slope of the linear portion of the lab curve = Cc? And for soils with OCR > 1, how do we construct the virgin curve? This is where I am TOTALLY lost because the Prof. cancelled his office hours today and this is the last day before finals!

      Junno Martinez youll never be asked to construct the curve..its obtained from experimental data in a lab. Youll always be given it. Did you read youe textbook fully on the topic? I think it should answer most of your questions regarding OCR and how it effects clays.

      Yes. The homework asks me to find Cc and Cs(swell index) at OCR = 1 and OCR = 2.5. I have plotted on excel and am fine with OCR = 1 but am totally lost on this one.

      Junno Martinez thats just homework..it doesnt make any sense for the prof to ask you to plot the curve during an exam. Its too much to explain over youtube comments, for normally consolidated clays, OCclays with low-medium sensitivity and OC clays with high sensitivity, the curves will look different, specifically the steepness of the virgin curve. Im not a geotechnical engineer, i have an understanding of these concepts but for more in depth theory youll have to consult your textbook/research papers.
