I would love very much to see a film - even an animated one - about a Gray Jedi who occasionally must wrestle with the dark side of their personality. Such an inner struggle would create a lot of tension as he or she goes about their duties. Luke Skywalker could never be a Gray Jedi, but Rey most certainly could with her Palpatine bloodline and that would make for an interesting story.
You have an incredibly narrow view of what the Jedi are. Your knowledge is very basic and lacking the details. The way you explained it is like saying a cat purrs when content or happy and hisses when spooked. You haven't said why, what events lead to their way of thinking. Though like most fans I'm guessing you are huge fan of the very evil Sith and don't care about the details.
A post about someone being against absolutes while at the same time stating an absolute while people complain about the absolute while at the same time their own claim being an absolute while another commenter talks about the previous people stating absolutes while stating absolutes.
bradford I don’t think GJ keep a balance all the time, I’m pretty sure in order to use both sides you’d need to use the light side internally for most of the time and only tap into the dark when it’s like actually needed. Also edit, that’s very possible. the Je’daii order which lasted for 10k years mind you, would kick out anyone who was leaning towards the light or dark and exile them to a moon.
bradford yeah I’d def acknowledge that the concept put into practice is risky to turn to either side, but it’s really excessive use of the dark side that corrupts you. And it’d also be very hard to achieve yes. You could still get help of GJ were in an order setting. Also Emotion does keep you on the light side, several people on the light side would remain there while having attachments to people and things. Anakin for example had a bunch of attachments and he was still on the light side until he was manipulated by Palps so I don’t get what you’re saying
You do know that prior to the Mandalorian wars and after Luke brought the jedi back in legends the Jedi were perfectly ok with having multiple padawans being trained by one master and jedi having kids and marrying right?
@@taliesinhalliday that is true, and honestly one of the more unexplored areas of star wars lore with little depicted outside of The old republic MMO (probably because people are more interested in bashing the jedi then to develop the sith) but more often than not the sith are more interested in duplicity and advancing one's power base than in say...fighting famine.
A Grey Jedi is just a force user that doesn't have the emotional maturity of a five year old that either cuts off all emotion or lets their emotions consume them
@@andromedagalaxynebula5751 right, but most dark side users are fueled by strong emotion. Jedi try to get rid of their emotions. Grey Jedi likely recognize their emotions and move on, like a mature person would
The first mistake the Jedi order made was pledging loyalty to the Republic. Why would any order hoping to bring peace to the entire galaxy pledge loyalty to only part of it? We've seen how this decision screwed over so many people. During the Clone Wars, the Jedi were forbidden from helping those in need simply because the Separatists weren't involved. The Jedi became the slaves of the Republic. Luke Skywalker fixed this after The Galactic Federation turned on him. The second mistake was creating a code that forbade emotion and attachments. This decision was made to prevent Jedi falling to the dark side, but repressing emotions and strict rules actually caused more to fall to the dark side. Count Dooku and Anakin Skywalker are two examples of how the code was actually it's own enemy. Yet again, Luke fixed this after he created the New Jedi Order. Allowing Jedi to marry and allowing the dark side to be studied.
WALN Zell yeah The Jedi weren’t bad, but there ideals were massively flawed as repressing emotional always fails in the end, and emotions are not capable of getting rid of so it is basically a ticking bomb waiting to blow
I guess Anakin really did bring balance to the Force - by wipping out the Jedi Order, he made a clean slate for a new generation of Jedi, who would learn from past mistakes, and he also killed Palpatine, thus ending the domain of the Sith.
@@Fattipotato79 I’m a Master Gary Jedi then, “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away... there was a Jedi who lived in a pineapple under the sea, his name was Gary and he was enslaved by a horrible person named Spongebob who fed him waterlogged snail food everyday. But, it was discovered that he could use the force and both the Jedi and the Sith came for him - Gary fled while two lightsaber wielding jackasses tore up the pineapple fighting for the right to take him, one had a crimson blade the other was blue as the sea itself. The two introduced themselves, one was Darth Planktin and the other was Master Krabs ... they fought until they finally realized that Gary had gotten away ... this is where Gary’s story begins, with an epic battle and chase to see who takes him on as an apprentice, we can only hope that Gary will get to decide for himself his own path in life.”
Indeed. Not expressing any emotion and/or passion like the Jedi is extremely unhealthy, while letting your emotions consume you like the Sith is also unhealthy. Expressing your emotions in a controlled manner is the way of the Chad.
Except that Georges Lucas himself said in an interview (back in 2010, I believe) that the only way to bring balance in the Force is to be purely Light. The very existence of the Dark side mess with the balance of the force. But everyone forgot since Disney decided to change that.
I love her character, but as far as I've seen she's no Grey Jedi. A Grey Jedi is one that embraces all sides of the force, and we've not seen any dark side from her...yet
There is no light without the Dark Through passion, I gain Focus Through Knowledge, I gain Power Through Serenity, I gain Strength Through Victory I gain Harmony There is Only the Force -Grey Jedi Code Another Grey Jedi Code
I actually love the Grey Jedi concept. It's like necessary evil for good things, and necessary good for evil things. Like Anti-Hero and Anti-Villain... .
I love the Sith the most, but my personal experiences have taught me that the Grey Jedi is the best format to live life by. Primarily the search for Balance, first in ones self, then attempting to bring balance to the world. If you’re out of balance with yourself, you’re not qualified to bring balance to much else.
protectorian It is a question, and a good one at that. The answer is easy. The people who determine the balance are the people who aren’t greedy or are close minded to other ideas aside from there own. They are the people who would see currency completely done away with, see to it that power is quickly removed from those who let it get to their heads, and want what’s best for all humans. They can’t be racist, biased, arrogant, irresponsible, quick to anger, or have any desire to be treated as being better than others. They want to make the weak strong and the strong wise. They consider all options for the good of all mankind. It’s really not that hard. It really just takes a wise and experienced mind with a heart full of good intent towards all. It’s what we should all strive to be.
protectorian That’s not the question you asked. You asked what the qualifications were for those who would bring the balance. To bring balance IS to mean well for all, because balance is what’s best for all. But that does not mean every decision made in everyone’s best interest is going to be pleasant to experience or execute. Unlike the Jedi, understanding what evils are necessary and which ones are not is part what aids in maintaining balance. And while greed CAN be a powerful ally, it is one of those evils that is more a plague than an aid to balance, as greed is a thing that always seeks to destroy balance. Greed is the ultimate enemy to ultimate balance. That does not mean that personal desires are wrong to have (which is where the Jedi failed), but when your self centered desires consume you and cause you to disrupt the balance in your own life and that of others is when your desire has turned to greed, and you become a Sith-like threat to the balance of all things.
protectorian Also, I said absolutely nothing about suppressing our desires to enter the darker parts of ourselves. You can’t make peace with your inner demons by getting rid of them or quieting them, because they will always haunt you in this life. Rather you MUST explore them to their fullest extent to understand yourself better, but NOT to a degree in a manner in which it harms the balance in and around you. It’s called “self” control for a reason. And if humans worked together, we could create simulations for all manners of evil where people could experience their inner demons to their fullest extent without harming others or wrecking the balance in any way. And any who fail to have self control, or “self balance,” despite these aids must be punished accordingly, as they would have no excuse to commit their evils for real. We already have some good simulations in the form of video games. I can’t go out and start shooting people for no reason because that would be the opposite of balance. But thanks to GTA, I can hop on there any time I’m feeling like a psycho killer and unleash hell without disrupting any balance. Imagine a place that catered to your darkest desires where you could do anything you want without actually harming anyone or disturbing the balance of nature. You could even join in activities with others to perform fake crime of all sorts if you wished. Your worst demons are satisfied, and no one gets hurt. So long as you make peace with your demons, and are wise enough to have good self control, you have achieved inner balance. But I think achieving that for all humans would require some serious technology, as some people need more physical assistance and props to aid with their self control than others do. However that level of technology is something we haven’t committed to creating because those in leadership would rather control others before controlling themselves, and would rather wreak real chaos as opposed to limiting it to simulations. Once you embrace your inner demons and find a harmless outlet for them, it is much easier to achieve inner balance. After that, then you can help others to do the same, thereby bringing all humans into equal balance one soul at a time. Minds will become more open, humans will be able to evolve together through knowledge and mutual harmony, and this in turn will eventually bring the world into balance. Greed tends to make that a problem though. As does any organization that brainwashes people into believing Jedi/Sith types of concepts. Primarily religion, but really any over-exaggerated cause or pride like racism, veganism, or even patriotism can be twisted and used against balance. That is why such ideologies are also unnecessary and dangerous to achieving a balanced world.
protectorian I don’t think we’re on the same page, but ok. Lol. I’m talking about applying balance to the REAL world. OUR world. I’m not interested in running it by what the Grey Jedi do or say, as they are not all even on the same page of each other. It is simply the application of embracing the light and the darkness within ourselves that I am talking about. What happens in the Star Wars galaxy is pretty much up to Disney now, but I hope that the true fans will continue to fight to keep Disney in check. What matters most is what we learn from Star Wars, and that we apply those lessons to our personal lives. That’s why I’m such a major fan. Very few things in my life have been constant for me, and Star Wars is not only one of those things, but it has aided greatly in my learning of the importance of balance within myself and the world around me. It has made a much better and more mature person out of me from all aspects. And the more I seek to maintain my balance, the more fulfilling my life gets. The Force may not exist in this reality, but from my experience, the universe definitely seems to reward those who seek balance in all things. Its my goal to aid the universe in achieving and maintaining balance as it expands, as I believe that is the true and original purpose of all life that exists everywhere.
@@memecliparchives2254 The point is; Grey Jedi supposedly detest their Jedi counterparts' tendency toward adhering to dogma, and yet they've got their own dogma to follow. "Accepting" that they do makes no difference here. Most "Grey Jedi" in this franchise are hypocritical. ^ At best, *_neither_* the Jedi Council nor any Grey Jedi truly follow the Light Side. The separate dogmas they obey ironically go against what the Light Side's supposed to be about.
My issue with Grey Jedi is that they will inevitably become the new "good guys" while relegating the Jedi as alternate "bad guys". It frees a whole class of potential characters of the complications of choosing a moral side. In the end, while I like the idea, becoming a Grey Jedi should be a destination, not a starting point. No movie or video game should start with a protagonist being a Grey Jedi, unless of course the moral of the story is that choosing a side is what moves the story forward to resolution.
Very well said and I completely agree with you. The gray jedi is such a cool and interesting subject I think and I'd love to see a movie or game or book or whatever really that tell stories and follow those who WE or other star wars characters might classify as gray jedi.. But if they were to decide to make "the gray jedi" a thing, a side that one were able to choose to align with.. It almost goes against the gray jedi in a fundamental way and would 100% ruin what makes them so cool. The ones that we consider as gray jedi come from a place of following either the way of the sith or the way of the jedi, sometimes even both! For whatever reason(s) though they have severed ties with them only after they experience great personal growth, reflection, and just a general knowledge of the world and life and where their morals align. They have decided that maybe they agree with the jedi on some things but maybe not others.. They embrace the dark side from a perspective of the fact that it's nothing that should scare you as long as you know where you stand and know you are what you perceive as good why should another side of the force have any effect on you negative or otherwise? They don't let the ways of the jedi or the ways of the sith dictate how they think in every single facet of their own personal journey of life. They refuse to pick and align themselves with either side because they are free thinking and do what they think is right in all situations instead of what you are told to think is right by the faction that you align with. Only siths deal in absolutes and they aren't willing to say just because I agree with you here I will absolutely agree with everything you say. They know who they are and won't let anyone tell them they are bad because they may do some things that are considered "dark force" and they won't let anyone tell them that they are not good just because they don't agree with the jedi when it comes to every single thing. If aligning yourself as a gray jedi were to become a thing it would take away from the fact that you think for yourself, are at peace with and comfortable with who you are and the decisions you make being the right decisions for YOU based on who YOU are as an individual. When you put a defined label on it you inevitably start considering and quantifying what exactly it is that makes one a gray jedi and what established adoptors of the label of "gray jedi" thus far have done or what they would do... Where they align themselves on certain subjects, how they think. Down to even what force abilities do "gray jedi" use... That in and of itself is going entirely against what it is to be a gray jedi. It wouldn't take but a minute for new force users deciding to align themselves as a "gray jedi" to start taking on the qualities of existing gray jedi because well... They've put the label on themselves so now they have to think like gray jedi do and act like gray jedi do, right? Walk the walk so to speak. And that is where it all falls apart. By declaring yourself a gray jedi you've essentially become the exact thing that a gray jedi is not. This topic is fascinating me right now and reminds me a lot of real life and religion in some ways. Sorry this is so long if anyone read it. If not it was a fun thought and reflection for myself personally hahaha.

Yeah well the Rakata were all, yeah fuck you were coming to kill you. So...how were things in balance if the Dark side Rakata existed in the same time as the anti-altruistic anti-good Samaritan Jeda'ii order?
Actually, the problem with the je'dai was that they believed balance was the only thing. One could not be good or evil, they always had to stay balanced and not tip it. If one lost their balance, they would be forced to go to the moon above their planet and medicate until they were back in balance.
@@grizzakaful Yeah, that's the thing, while they were anti-evil they were also anti good, and anyone can tell you that in real life being a nice person doesn't automatically result in another person turning evil as a direct result. And in many respects, the Je'daii were more authoritarian and forcefully conformist than the Jedi ever were. Their attempts at balance didn't stop the Rakata empire from happening.
I don’t believe Qui Gon was a grey Jedi. I believe he was a true Jedi since he was a servant of the force while the Jedi order were servants of the senate.
@@TheGoldenWildcat Lasting over 1,000 years is feat unto itself. If you think practicing both sides is a good thing, then you miss the point of Star Wars and the essence of being a True Jedi. Xantoes a former student of Qui Gon is at best a Dark Jedi or a Dark Sider with a Lightsaber. For he forsaken Jedi Training and the light side entirety. Sith is being of a higher quality than your run of the mill dark sider. being a grey sider will make your force abilities weaker overall and ineffective against Dark Siders and Light Siders in general. Banite Sith had to make a very detail oriented plan that expanded over 1,000 years to hope ever stopping the Jedi. Also Star Wars would be very boring if Jedi were grey and neutral like you want them to be.
Given episode 9 with the original director toyed with the grey jedi idea along with other great concepts like Mortis the force planet coming back, Finn inspiring Stormtroopers, Kylo staying evil, learning about Plaguis's Master, and Luke messing with Kylo, it would have been a still flawed but much better movie.
@@mrcoryman1 the funny thing is I never knew the prequels were hated.sure I thought they were cheesy as hell and easy to make fun of but aside from jar jar and Hayden christianson I love the prequels.
I love how Grey Jedi can start a argument online faster then a political comment. While they aren't cannon, yet, if you look back at legends information they are what the jedi started as.
6:15 I love it how the Grey Jedi code absolutely blows the others out of the freaking water. That's gotta be the coolest set of words to ever come out of the Star Wars universe.
I would have to say that if they were to introduce the "Grey Jedi", it may rekindle my interest in Star Wars. Blind faith to any extreme obviously leads to destruction, we see this in our own Real Life History. So ya, I'd dig it. True Neutral is always my play-style.
I like the grey Jedi. They're proof that the light and dark sides of force aren't inherently good or evil but rather sides of the same coin. Without both the force could not exist. I've love to see more done with them, but this may be too advanced for the likes of Disney these days.
@@raymarshall7779 Oh STFU. Only morons say there is no grey jedi. Dont sit there and tell me people are only light or dark. Look t the D&D game set and all the alignments there. STFU that there is no grey jedi
Keep it in context...Anakin said "you are either with me or against me." and Obi-wan's response to THAT was "Only a Sith DEALS in absolute." Absolutes exist in nature there is no escaping it, despite how you to want to try and bend the rules. The key word here is "deals" as in only the Sith deals in "yes" and "no" and don't question the in between, they have a very binary response and do not see the implications nor the complications of their own actions due to their own arrogance, rage and pride. The Jedi will also embrace the dark side in their training and will allow it to certain degrees but only Master Jedi are allowed to undergo this training (Mace Windu with his Form 7 variation of Vaapad). Also the fact that there are Grey Jedi allowed to exist in the academy (Oui-Gon Jinn) shows they are not as restrictive as the Sith in terms of knowledge. If you take it out of context then it sounds like a contradiction but you have to understand that the Jedi are also not perfect and they were written as such, they are blinded by their dogmatic ways and are so persistent on upholding their "truths" when that is just a perspective to another and not the ultimatum. With that, the Jedi do not deal in absolutes but are more guided by blind faith which can be equally as bad.
I was telling my friend, who is a MASSIVE Dtar Wars fan, a few months back that I wouldn't want to be a Jedi or a Sith, because I don't agree with either of their codes. That's when he introduced me to the concept of the Grey Jedi. I looked for this video to learn more about them, and was amazed at how, without knowing anything about them, my morals perfectly align with the Grey Jedi code. This video was super informative and interesting. Thanks so much for putting this together!

@@crossface5710 I am a guardian of ballance. In situations where there is no gentleness without violence I understand that violence is necessary. If someone comes to my home threatening my family I will use violence to protect them because it's necessary.
Gray Jedi embrace both the light and dark side powers and use their abilities to keep one side from gaining power over the other. As he stated in the video, there are many different versions of the Gray Jedi Code. Here is my personal favorite: "There must be both dark and light. I will do what I must to keep the balance, as the balance is what holds all life. There is no good without evil, but evil must not be allowed to flourish. There is passion, yet peace; serenity, yet emotion; chaos, yet order. I am a wielder of the flame; a champion of balance. I am a guardian of life. I am a Gray Jedi."
@ItoMadWorld I think what it means by flourish is not to let it run rampant like a government with almost completely corrupt officials. Evil needs to struggle while they won't be close to dying they need to be kept in check.
There is no grey Jedi in the Lucas universe. It is impossible. Grey Jedi is an oximoron. First of all, a Jedi is a member of the Jedi Order. Otherwise just a Force user or a member of another church/cult/sect/whatever. The Jedi Order does not allow the use of the Dark Side one tiny bit, because the Dark Side will consume the user according to Yoda (George Lucas) "Once you start down the dark path forever will it dominate your destiny. Consume you it will ..." Period. So the problem with the rules Lucas set, that it is inevitable to become evil bit by bit if one starts to use the Dark Side. And that is dangerous to the whole galaxy so it can not be allowed. That is why the Jedi became pragmatic, which means that any Jedi attempts to use the Dark Side will be dealt with.
If you think about it in Legends continuity Luke Skywalker is also kind of a Grey Jedi, mainly because he stated to his order that there is no good or evil technique of the force, it just depends on how you use it. Not to mention he was able to use techniques of the force that most Jedi from the past wouldn't even use ever because they are basically dark side based techniques. In fact I even made up a Star Wars character myself who was raised by a Jedi for lack of a better term hated the old system of the Jedi Order and kind of felt grateful that the Empire destroyed it.
I think that the grey jedi will be the final destination of the force users of star wars, because if anakin truly did balance the force by his sacrifice, then that means equal light AND dark. As long as the jedi and the sith both exist they will clash, and if only one exsists then it would mean the balance was toppled one way or the other. Eventually, the gray jedi will become the dominate faction, able to keep peace by balancing serenity with emotion.
No Anakin did for a short period bring balance to the force when he killed the emperor if you look at the last movie before the force awakens what you'll find is that when Luke fought his father he had a moment where he use the Darkside when he drawed upon his anger to defeat his father and when he had the chance to kill him refuse to do so, considering he had the urge to kill his father when he threatened to use his sister and use her as part of the Empire to join the Dark Side, and with him killing the emperor he returned to his former State as a Jedi but then died leaving only a gray Jedi Luke Skywalker. Although one could argue that Anakin was a grey Jedi because he although he stayed in the light when he was in the Jedi Order he did use Darkside methods and go against some of the Light Side teachings while trying to preserve peace in the galaxy before his fall to the dark side. Actually I think the whole purpose of the Skywalker family was to show the Galaxy how to stay balanced in both the light and the dark side of the force and create an entity or organization of force users that kept the force in Balance but we all know how that turned out it'll be interesting to see what Disney does with the franchise.
the narrator dont forget luke also force choked miss piggies and kermit the frogs bastard children who wer working as guards in jabas palace.....yeah i know they are gamorreans but i always thought thats what Kermit amd the pigs kids would look like
he wasnt a complete grey jedi, but he was sort of a free spirit in the order, which is why they didnt want him in the counsel. but his free spirit would have made him the perfect master for young anakin and everything would have turned out completely different.
I don't like Disney's new Canon, I prefer the original Lucasfilms Canon, but I hope the Grey Jedi have a big role in the near future, especially if the Yuzhaan Vong (hope I spelled that right) are coming...
@@ReadyComicsRoll Yeah, I didn't grow up with the Expanded Universe, I only understood Star Wars after Disney made the new canon. I've heard about the Vong, but too be honest, it is too strange. There is a grey Jedi in “canon” Qui-Gonn Jin is a grey jedi. Rewatch the Phantom Menace and carefully listen to his teaching instruction of the “living force” to Obi-wan and later to Anakin.
@@RandoLePerson well Anakin really was the balance bringer from the prophecy so yeah, he should be considered as a grey Jedi... If you interpret it in other ways it may seem that Luke is the balance himself and thus making him a grey Jedi, but yeah you can still consider both of them grey Jedi because Anakin still turned his back from siths
There's no such thing as grey Jedi and Qui-Gon certainly wasn't one. You can have force users who use both light and dark but they aren't Jedi, you have to follow the teachings and rules of the Jedi order to be called a Jedi.
@@quigonlynn1 This would be disregarding the fact that originally, the Jedi practiced both. It was only during the time after the first split that the new "Order" decided to change its teachings to what we got in the movies. This was due to their fear of the darkside which in itself contradicts the whole "No emotions" aspect. True Jedis are practitioners of balance. The ones we got in the order where extremists who are in part at fault for the sith constantly rising up.
I prefer view Luke as the first “true” Jedi since Qui-Gon and the Old Republic. The point of the Prequels were that the Jedi by that time deserved to be destroyed. Luke, on the other hand, had emotions and relationships beyond being a Jedi but still never fell to the Dark Side and became more powerful and wise than Yoda, Palpatine, or even his father could’ve been.
The Sith aren't chaotic, though. The codes of each group was based on emotions. Sith: Heavily divulge in emotions Jedi: Pretend emotions don't exist Grey Jedi: "Don't get mad, get Glad (trash bags)"
@@2eleven40 This is why I think the words "Lawful" and "Chaotic" were bad words to choose when whomever created the alignment spectrum, but those are the words nonetheless. A better way to explain it is: Lawful = places group goals/values over self interests. Chaotic = places self goal/values over group interests. With that context Sith would be fairly Chaotic. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alignment_(Dungeons_%26_Dragons)
the sith have morals and they have laws, they also have a strict ranking system. they are not chaotic. they are lawful as they obey the laws of the sith code. chaotic characters have no code and follow no laws, they do what they like at the time. sith spend years planning before they attack. no chaotic character would spend years training as long as a sith does. they have strict rules.
I think calling Revan a grey jedi is underestemating him. Grey jedi find a balance between light and dark sides, Revan didn’t so much find balance as much as MASTER both fully.
This is just part of a quote from Ketu. Here is the real quote: "In the light, there is a darkness and in the darkness, a light. It is the way with us all. Be a prisoner of neither Bogan nor Ashla. Strive to live in balance. As Tython itself teaches us, it is dangerous to do otherwise. And the danger is there-always." - Ketu, of the Je'daii Order (Je'daii Temple Master of Akar Kesh, Great Temple of Balance, on Tython). There is no such thing as "Grey/Gray Jedis". Force wielders who practice balance are the Je'daii.
That's what the Taijitu symbol is all about! Hell this icon i'm using is also another form of that Except it also expresses a double-sided mind, someone who has mastered both sides, or two who became one
I thought that the Last Jedi movie was perfectly leading up to the development of the Grey Jedi in new canon when Rey and Kylo were having those mental links and joined forces in the battle against Snoke and his guards. It was a shame when nothing eventuated and some of the worst plot decisions followed shortly after when that avenue was abruptly cut off. I would have really enjoyed both Kylo and Rey sharing both sides of the force enacting their will of balance between the two conflicting factions as a third party.
I like the idea of Grey Jedi... I have always disliked the idea that people cannot use the Dark Side for good as it corrupts you but the Light side does not (silly).
@@grandhierophantkhatep685 - Yeah they contradict themselves sometimes... but using the Dark Side is seen to corrupt you and make you full on kill kids evil from what we have been shown.
Luke (in the EU) I thought was a Gray Jedi. He did alter a LOT of the classic Jedi codes (allowed Jedi to have families and had one of his own, trained and befriended Kyle Katarn who used light/dark powers). I remember reading a book back in the day (can't remember which one) where it said that Luke (at the end of ep6) was a grey Jedi because he accepted his emotions (not giving up on Vader), dressed in all black and used Force Choking (which was a typical dark side of the force), but he obviously still had a strong moral compass
Regardless of weather or not Revan was a grey/light Jedi or sith. He's my absolute favorite character, including Darth Nihilus. Hands up if y'all agree 🙋👍
Abby Simon he’ll the movie director fucked up the new trilogy... they tried to pushed an sjw agenda... I hate it... Luke wasn’t supposed to die in the movie and yet they made it so making a view point to ruin a beautiful franchise for sjw propaganda...
I like to consider the Grey Jedi as the neutral faction, with the OG Jedi Lawful and Sith Chaotic (to a degree, not everything is black and white for Jedi or Sith. "ironic") but essentially, Grey Jedis don't devote themselves to either side, and with this, I like to think that they dont necessarily form a faction of their own, but that one each Grey Jedi are their own faction individually. They would be the type of people neither the Jedi nor the Sith would approve, and the Grey Jedi are often wandering across the Galaxy solo, there's no set destination for the Grey Jedi, there is only the flow between the Force, life, the admittance of ones own darkness but the strength to work with it, not be consumed by it. This could also mean that Grey Jedi wont have as much power as either a Sith or a Jedi who devote themselves to their respective side, but Grey Jedi have the greatest wisdom and understanding of both sides and that they rely on their own hard earned skills that can have them go toe-to-toe with Sith or Jedi, but neither overwhelm nor be underwhelmed in power - a truly balanced and neutral group. But that's just my tidbit, I'm not at all familiar with Star Wars unlike the OG fans, I just love the lore of this series so much. I might start a movie marathon and delve deep into the fandom sometime in the future.
I say the Jedi were the edgiest of all because think about it. Who else but a edgelord would think that emotions themselves is the issue in the equation?
@KruzSTUDIO They didn't tell him to not mourn, only to not allow his emotions to get the better off him, which he proved them right, by failing to do so.
@@DiogoJ1 Because they were never there for him to help out in the first place. If the Jedi were able to help out Ki Andi Mundi with the issue of his family, why not Anakin? The way they handled Ashoka's ordeal did not help either. They just made it even worse and sealed their own fates why they truly deserved to go.
Kyle Katarn's interpretation is probably the most logical conclusion to make. There is no 'side' to the Force, there is just the Force. The dark or light comes from the person wielding it.
My only beef with the gray jedi is that they break the melodramatic structure that made Star Wars so enjoyable in the first place but I think that it's really fitting for the times we're living in for the expanded SW (or SW as it expands) acknowledges that a balance is the true way rather than ultimate good and ultimate evil
@@cronic1866 That's an opinionated answer to me. Ones point of view determines if it is good or evil. People can do bad things for what they say is for the greater good, but which actions will they take to get there and will they be thought of as good or evil? whether someone is good or bad is usually left to the empathy of others when they view of their actions.
@@Istangr2784 your answer is opinionated. have you ever done something bad for a good cause? Does that make one selfish or evil? Have you ever heard of someone doing something good, but others say it is bad? It boils down to your point of view.
Jedi errors Emotion: they shape the living world, fear can help self preservation, love is fueling the expansion of life in sentient species, and although some people can do horrible things out of love, other will stand by their morals for the same reason Ignorance: contradicts some philosophy of the jedis, that a master is still a learner all his life. Without ignorance you would live on certitudes, because "you know". Ignorance can make you question things Passion: pass, sounds like a repeat of the emotion vs peace line Chaos: chaos tails order like its shadow. The universe was born out of chaos, with many random events building slowly into order. even the Force visions proves chaos is part of the force, since Yoda himself warns Luke how moving the future is, uncertain Death: maybe your death doesn't mean much to you as a Jedi because you join the Force afterwards, but that means the weaker beings lost someone to defend them. I feel that the Jedi ranks dwindled because of their " save everyone at all time" mentality Sith errors Peace is a lie. This alone is flawed. The Sith have spent so many years wasting their strenght, power, victories to jump at eachother's throat. You could even say Bane aknowledged peace and its benefits: he hid the Sith from the Jedis's sight for centuries, using peace as a way to mellow their vigilance, then unleashed the right amount of chaos when everything was ready through Sidious.
One of my favorite Je'daii analogies is this one and it perfrctly sums up Grey Jedi: The Force is like a giant tree. What branches you choose to climb determines your path of the Force but keep true to it and you will ultimately reach the canopy of enlightenment
The traditional Jedi back to the Je'Dah order were grey in nature as they understood and practised both sides of thr force. So no, you are wrong. Quigon was in essence a Grey Jedi.
Darth Nihilus But you’re a Sith Lord yourself! The Sith always betray one another to see who’s the Strongest, Powerful & Feared. The Jedi are the opposite who protect those who cannot defend themselves & helped those who fell to the Dark Side into bringing them back to the Light Side Like when Revan when he fell to the Dark Side he reclaimed his old Idenity as the Hero who won the Mandalorian War. & he ended the War between the Republic & Sith Empire he started by defeating his old Apprentice Darth Malak & Destroying the Star Forge.
I've looked at the codes in this video in a philosophical manner in relation to the actions of the their respective orders. Before today I didn't know there was a Grey Jedi code, but reading it and applying it to the actions of Grey Jedi I can honestly say that was one of the most honest codes to date. Aside from the Sith code, which is extremely honest to one's believes and goals that one wishes to achieve by any means necessary, the Grey Jedi actually have something solid. The Jedi's code is fundamentally flawed on just about every level, its hard to fight to protect someone without feeling something. A duty or a responsibility may be one thing, but to be effective one must have something worth fighting for. A passion or something that comes close to an actual emotion, this has served the Sith extremely well in duels against other Jedi. However the issue there is they let their emotions run ramp-id, best comparison would be a berserker. Incredibly strong and powerful, but undisciplined and exploitable. Jedi have composure, but too much can impede their judgment to a degree. Grey Jedi don't fall into these extremes, while they have composure they can still draw from their emotions at specific times to increase their abilities greatly. In addition to keeping a level a head and a cool composure, in this instance think of Shaolin Monks. While still having the Buddhist views of the world, they do not shy away from standing their ground. Nor would they be completely above taking action in their own hands should it be absolutely necessary to attack in order to protect. Jedi would fall more in line with Buddhist priests, with some self-defense training. They tend to keep to themselves more often, Grey Jedi can as well but also will strike out without hesitation nor some kind of permission from a council of sorts should the situation be dire enough to warrant it. Jedi and at times Sith are bound by this as both have a ruling council, though in the defense of the Sith that's more like guidelines. They do whatever they want, so long as its for the best interest of the empire. Which is some what problematic in its own way with the in fighting as it is notorious for. But getting back on topic, Grey Jedi would have to undergo a level of training and conditioning to understand the intricacies of the force and far better emotional control when it comes to restraint. Far more intensive then Jedi Order could ever fathom.

If you enjoyed this video, be sure to check out my breakdown as to why Stormtroopers have "bad aim." ua-cam.com/video/NvdM2LVe3Ps/v-deo.html Also, I know a lot of people get caught up on the term "Jedi" within Grey Jedi, but please understand that what I speak of is a Force Adept who finds balance, either in using both abilities powers that draw from the light and the dark, or neither source at all. This video provides examples of groups and characters that fall within this category, from both Legends/EU and New Canon, while still using the established term "Grey Jedi", at least until a better term comes along. Remember that the Force is the Force, and that not all abilities/powers come from the light or dark aspects of it, such as push, pull, slam, and mind trick. - Anthony
I think you are correct people are getting hung up on that and technically they are correct to do so. You see there is no such thing as a gray Jedi. You're either a Sith or a Jedi and if you leave either order looking for balance in the middle then you are not that anymore and can no longer be called that. So we should be referring to them simply as a gray, not a gray Jedi
well i believe that they are grey Jedi but yeah if want to be called grey that's great but to me i believe that their is only the force not two different sides those sides are how people use the force is just one of all it could dark or light its u and other that before those side to be on, soon u will be pulled to other side but the balance of none temptation of ether when u are bound between both.
There is no light without the dark, Through passion i gain focus Through knowledge i gain power Through serenity i gain strength Through victory i gain harmony There is only the force. ^ this is from Both jedi code and Sith code combined. And it literally means balance. 6:15 i don't know where you got that from but that was pretty lame.
Since I was a kid i LOVED the idea of something gray, I always saw the Jedi ways... useless, they were trying to do the best for everyone but they were too passive that's why I always liked Anakin he was something more, if you want to protect you have to be active sometimes, doing nothing is not the best way to bring peace of to bring safety, now that I'm an adult I still love the idea of the Gray Jedi lmao is just too good for me
I like the idea of a gray jedi order becoming cannon, it will allow them to give their universe depth and open whole new stories for them and make things work that may not have been able to before.
Ha I knew it. Haven't watched it yet but I kinda guessed the Grey Jedi will be introduced since either Rey will be turned Sith or become Grey thus titled "Last Jedi". I always loved the concept of walking between the force that was very prominent in VGs. Not only did it make for a great branching mechanic for choices and outcomes, it also becomes a great moral dilemna for the protagonist/antagonist themselves which is also why anti-hero stories are very good.
Aron Estabillo Exactly! Also, a "Grey Jedi" doesn't even have to be an anti-hero or edge lord. All "Grey Jedi" really means is balanced, and there is nothing wrong with that. Don't get the pushback from some fans on this subject, as it makes the Star Wars universe deeper and more complex, which makes for more interesting story telling. Also, as you pointed out, it has worked well for the EU books and video games. Let's see what the future holds.
I hope that this concept is developed more in the future. It is just awesome in my opinion and probably the only way to end the constant Jedi Vs Sith wars: to return of their former Jeda'ii roots (at least in Legends).
@@CEBph5997 The Grey Jedi are not canon. Grey Jedi make as much sense as a Grey Sith. Sith and Jedi are ultimately just philosophies. You can be entirely immersed in one side without being a Jedi or Sith like the Nightsisters for example. The light side is the force in balance while the dark side is the force out of balance. The light side is about channeling the actual will of the force while the dark side of the force is about bending the force to your will to accomplish your own personal ambitions. Ahsoka never utilizes the dark side of the force neither does Qui-Gon. Ahsoka is just a light-sided force user. Anakin doesn't become gray at the time of his death. He is on the light side again.
I would be a jedi, through and through, don't care how "unrealistic" their teaching may seem. I don't need to shut off emotions, only control them. That's the part people miss about the jedi. They don't encourage the removal of emotions, but to have control over them.
I would be a jedi for like 5>10 years and see the Fult with it and then embrace being a gray force user that's what I think would happen if I was sent to star wars
I still I agree with the Sith philosophy more than any other: it's how that philosophy was played out which I disagree with. If you examine the Sith code, irrespective of how the sith are portrayed: the code itself is an expression of freedom.
In the Sith code, only power matters. It does not care who you must crush to obtain that power. It inevitably leads to tyranny. Power has to be tempered by justice and mercy. It is a means, not an end by itself.
I like the Je'daii Order, I'd probably go so far as to say I like them better than the Jedi Order that we know of. The Jed'daii Order is the first grey jedi and I agree with that
i could see ray being grey (or gray?). she's very much about doing good but she does take a proactive role. and when she was fighting the royal guard she really allowed her emotions to flair. and luke was all horrified at how willing she was to tap into the dark side.
The Last Jedi definitely played with a lot of themes revolving around balance, and concepts that fall in line with that of Grey Jedi. Can't wait to see where Rey's journey takes her.
I'd love to see them become enforcers of balance. Constantly switching sides. Aiding whichever side is the underdog to ensure the other does not become too powerful. Neither side should be in complete control nor do they wish to see either die out. Would be very fun I think.
As far as the concept goes, it's more realistic. And satisfying. Like you said life isn't always black and white. There are often shades of gray. Many people live they're whole lives in the gray. They are wise to as well.
Would be more interesting than what's currently going on, storywise. Maybe this new trilogy will explore the concept more, especially if it revolves around the Old Republic. - Anthony
The problem with them being fully cannon is that they are basically the perfect Jedi. The force is all about balance. And they have exactly that balance. If they where cannon then there is no reason why everyone shouldn't be like them. It just makes the conflict look silly. It is the ying and yang together as it should be as the Chinese martial art philosophy will say. Both the Sith and Jedi order are stupid in comparison. This grey dudes just make them look silly. Sith are over-sentimental packages full of hate and frustration that lost their logic. And the Jedi order Jedi are unsentimental robots that lost the ability to understand the world around them and the pain and suffering of living creatures. In reality there is no dark or white force. Is just the force. The only reason for the dark and white appearance is because of how people use it. Is like a screwdriver that one uses to only unscrew and open things up and the other uses just to screw down and close things up. Depending on how you see it the screwdriver may seem like a tool for closing things up or for opening things up. But in reality the screwdriver is just a screwdriver. There is no reason why it shouldn't just be used as one and do all sorts of jobs. And the one that can use it for doing everything a screwdriver can do whether closing things, opening things etc then is the only one that actually understands how to use a screwdriver well. The others are just fools that create conflict for no reason and can never use a screwdriver effectively and put it to good use.
To be “Grey” is to be in balance with the force. To have a full understanding of both the light and dark side of the force. Becoming truly one with the force.
Rey isn't even a Jedi, so how can she be a Grey Jedi?? She's an unexplained plot point that's given hyper powers for no reason. Luke could be a Grey, but that wouldn't make much more sense either, since he started his own Jedi academy/ school, and became the Grandmaster. The new trilogy completely messed things up...ughh trash
Can’t forget Ferus Olin- imo the most underrated Jedi. He left the Jedi order before ever attaining the rank of Knight, which spared him from Order 66. His story is covered in The Last of the Jedi book series, which takes place between episodes III and IV. Ferus embarks on a quest to discover Sith holocrons to combine Dark and Light side techniques so he could become powerful enough to face Vader (as he and Anakin were bitter rivals while they were in the Jedi Order together), and put a stop to the Galactic Empire with his own small rebellion camped out on a remote asteroid. He never quite accomplished his mission, but through his journey became associated with Bail Organa and was tasked with watching over Leia on Alderaan, much like Obi-Wan (who was the actually catalyst for Ferus’s journey) would watch over Luke on Tatooine. Ferus would presumably die at the destruction of Alderaan in A New Hope. Ferus Olin is one of my favorite characters from Legends and no one knows who he is. He was also arguably one of the first characters to provide some kind of LGBTQIA+ representation in the Star Wars universe. The Last of the Jedi was written for a slightly younger audience, but I highly HIGHLY recommend that any Star Wars fan read them. They’re quite short and very entertaining
@Shayan They told Padme's parents that her twins were dead. A Jedi mind trick would be no worse than straight-up kidnapping kids. And Jedi do both those things very readily.
That was the right thing to do. Their lives would be in danger if the empire learned about them. Must I remind you that the sith hunted force sensititves to torture and train in the dark side. Fallen Order, anyone?
That’s not how it works, mind trick can be resisted with a strong will, parents love for their kids would indefinitely be more than enough will to resist it. Also, not every parent can care take their child. In a galaxy of trillions, there were only 10,000 Jedi at their height.
I believe that qui gon being a grey Jedi is a common mistake, he, in my eyes, was what a true Jedi should have actually been, let's not forget that the Jedi order at this point, and this is a fact, have lost their way, to go against the council isn't to be a grey Jedi, he goes against the Jedi because he sees the will of the force to outweigh the will of the council, I personally have never heard of him using any dark side abilities.
He actually used several dark side abilities, including becoming a force ghost, which was originally considered a dark side ability. In legends, he used force lighting and force deception. Both considered dark side abilities
@@nathanbaker677 I could be wrong but have never heard of him using dark side abilities in canon, legends has a lot of strange things in it. Same with force ghosts, in canon as far as I know no one who was a darkside user, especially a sith, has become a full fledge force ghost, not just situational/random manifestations through relics or hatred. If you know of him using dark side abilities in canon I'm all ears
He followed the will of the Force-but the Force made him with emotions. He acted on his feelings to free Anakin, and given time would probably have checked on Shmi when Anakin had nightmares. Whether or not he told Anakin about the Tuscan Raiders or any rescue that happened. To be purely Light would require him to repress his feelings, to be purely Dark would require him to be ruled by them. He did neither, and acknowledged Anakin's, and Shmi's, feelings as valid. That's not a Dark side ability, and that's not a Light side ability. That's the Greyest Jedi I've ever seen.

@bradford to me, it's ok actually. And it's not really breaking the force in it's entirety.
bradford apparently mace windu breaks the force in its entirety
bradford I don’t think GJ keep a balance all the time, I’m pretty sure in order to use both sides you’d need to use the light side internally for most of the time and only tap into the dark when it’s like actually needed.

WALN Zell yeah
The Jedi weren’t bad, but there ideals were massively flawed as repressing emotional always fails in the end, and emotions are not capable of getting rid of so it is basically a ticking bomb waiting to blow

Jedi Council: "The Jedi are correct in all their dogma and teachings"
Me: "Only a Sith deals in absolutes"
Ironically true since the council was unawake that there was sith influencing them all over the place
Ironically, the Grey Jedi themselves have their own dogma & teachings. It's self-defeating for them to have a doctrine of their own, and yet they do.
@@whiteraven1992 But they accept the fact they do have those. The Jedi won't admit that they are wrong most of the time.
^
At best, *_neither_* the Jedi Council nor any Grey Jedi truly follow the Light Side. The separate dogmas they obey ironically go against what the Light Side's supposed to be about.
@@whiteraven1992 The Grey don't follow the Light. That's the point.
Very well said, and I agree fully.
Black lives matter

So...how were things in balance if the Dark side Rakata existed in the same time as the anti-altruistic anti-good Samaritan Jeda'ii order?

Isn’t “only a Sith deals in absolutes” a statement of absolutes?
The horse shoe of the force
It's the irony that Obi-Wan realizes in his isolation
paradox
Keep it in context...Anakin said "you are either with me or against me." and Obi-wan's response to THAT was "Only a Sith DEALS in absolute."
Absolutes exist in nature there is no escaping it, despite how you to want to try and bend the rules.
“Mostly a Sith deals in absolutes” doesn’t sound as cool
I was telling my friend, who is a MASSIVE Dtar Wars fan, a few months back that I wouldn't want to be a Jedi or a Sith, because I don't agree with either of their codes. That's when he introduced me to the concept of the Grey Jedi.

There is no grey Jedi in the Lucas universe.
It is impossible.
Grey Jedi is an oximoron.
First of all, a Jedi is a member of the Jedi Order. Otherwise just a Force user or a member of another church/cult/sect/whatever.
The Jedi Order does not allow the use of the Dark Side one tiny bit, because the Dark Side will consume the user according to Yoda (George Lucas)
"Once you start down the dark path forever will it dominate your destiny. Consume you it will ..."
Period.

Interesting theory, and would love to see if it comes true in Episode XI!
darkAwesome100 No. The grey is going to be resolved through refined Jedi sight.
Yea... Cuz killing one old evil man balance the last 20 yrs that started with killing babies...

@@quigonlynn1 This would be disregarding the fact that originally, the Jedi practiced both. Jedi=True Lawful
Sith=True Chaotic
Grey Jedi=True Neutral
I would think:

Sith = Lawful Evil with chaotic tendencies
Grey Jedi = True Neutral with good tendencies.
The Sith aren't chaotic, though. The codes of each group was based on emotions.
Sith: Heavily divulge in emotions
Jedi: Pretend emotions don't exist
Grey Jedi: "Don't get mad, get Glad (trash bags)"
"I fight for neutrality!"
With that context Sith would be fairly Chaotic.

the sith have morals and they have laws, they also have a strict ranking system. they are not chaotic. they are lawful as they obey the laws of the sith code. chaotic characters have no code and follow no laws, they do what they like at the time. sith spend years planning before they attack. no chaotic character would spend years training as long as a sith does. they have strict rules.

I had the same impression when watching the movie i still hope they have rey go gray

The history of the je’daii need to be known and brought back
Was wondering if I'd find anyone mentioning the je'daii in the comments. They were always my favorite bit of lore.
Thats what defines a true fan of star wars the lesser known lore
And overall, just certain Force sensitive individuals who just want to live their lives away from a toxic dichotomy.
The Jedi must end, so the generation of edgy bois can live.
I say the Jedi were the edgiest of all because think about it. Who else but a edgelord would think that emotions themselves is the issue in the equation?
The virgin bois clan gotta end so the edgewalking emo bois can live
@@apatheticeye6955 They don't think emotions are the issue, but the lack of control on them. They aspire for emotional inteligence.
"Light = Good"
"Says who?"
"Dark = Evil"
"Again...says who? all i am hearing are opinions and points of view."
its just a saying light =good dark= evil. meaning those who did evil was considered dark.
Light =fight for others
Dark= fights for self
I'm not a super fan but that's my understanding of it
Alex Ondrus Light- isolation of emotions, stealing kids, telling them the lies that sadness is bad and leads to being bad.
Jedi errors
Emotion: they shape the living world, fear can help self preservation, love is fueling the expansion of life in sentient species, and although some people can do horrible things out of love, other will stand by their morals for the same reason
Ignorance: contradicts some philosophy of the jedis, that a master is still a learner all his life. Without ignorance you would live on certitudes, because "you know". Ignorance can make you question things
Passion: pass, sounds like a repeat of the emotion vs peace line
Chaos: chaos tails order like its shadow. The universe was born out of chaos, with many random events building slowly into order. even the Force visions proves chaos is part of the force, since Yoda himself warns Luke how moving the future is, uncertain
Death: maybe your death doesn't mean much to you as a Jedi because you join the Force afterwards, but that means the weaker beings lost someone to defend them. I feel that the Jedi ranks dwindled because of their " save everyone at all time" mentality
Sith errors
Peace is a lie.
One of my favorite Je'daii analogies is this one and it perfrctly sums up Grey Jedi:
The Force is like a giant tree. What branches you choose to climb determines your path of the Force but keep true to it and you will ultimately reach the canopy of enlightenment
Qui-gon wasn’t a grey Jedi, he was a traditional Jedi that followed the will of the force.
The traditional Jedi back to the Je'Dah order were grey in nature as they understood and practised both sides of thr force. So no, you are wrong. Quigon was in essence a Grey Jedi.
There is no light without dark, there is no love without anger, there is no order without chaos. All must be kept in balance.
I think both the Jedi and Sith code is wrong in a way
Exactly!
Oh yeah, both codes can lead some people towards the wrong path.
Howdy there hungry boii
Darth Nihilus But you’re a Sith Lord yourself! The Sith always betray one another to see who’s the Strongest, Powerful & Feared. The Jedi are the opposite who protect those who cannot defend themselves & helped those who fell to the Dark Side into bringing them back to the Light Side Like when Revan when he fell to the Dark Side he reclaimed his old Idenity as the Hero who won the Mandalorian War. & he ended the War between the Republic & Sith Empire he started by defeating his old Apprentice Darth Malak & Destroying the Star Forge.
The Lord of Hunger, --intheflesh-- I mean, in his cloak! Peace be to you, oh awesome one!

Also, I know a lot of people get caught up on the term "Jedi" within Grey Jedi, but please understand that what I speak of is a Force Adept who finds balance, either in using both abilities powers that draw from the light and the dark, or neither source at all.
This video provides examples of groups and characters that fall within this category, from both Legends/EU and New Canon, while still using the established term "Grey Jedi", at least until a better term comes along.

The Grey Jedi are not canon.
Where are my gray Jedi's at?

I still I agree with the Sith philosophy more than any other: it's how that philosophy was played out which I disagree with. If you examine the Sith code, irrespective of how the sith are portrayed: the code itself is an expression of freedom.
In the Sith code, only power matters. It does not care who you must crush to obtain that power. It inevitably leads to tyranny. Power has to be tempered by justice and mercy. It is a means, not an end by itself.
The freedom to make good choices or bad ones. American values no doubt.

The problem with them being fully cannon is that they are basically the perfect Jedi.
The force is all about balance. And they have exactly that balance. If they where cannon then there is no reason why everyone shouldn't be like them.

Why would parents even let their kids be taken.
Jedi: He/she is coming with me. *mind trick*

@Shayan They told Padme's parents that her twins were dead.
A Jedi mind trick would be no worse than straight-up kidnapping kids.
And Jedi do both those things very readily.
It was an honor to be a jedi
