Steve is right. Good QBs know how to work within the game plan and the flow of the offense, then break from that and improvise only when the play breaks down.
Steve Young has got to be one of the most intelligent men that understands how football needs to be played. Sure some of Bill Walsh must have rubbed off on him, but he is such a genius when it comes to explaining football.
Montana knew Brock has the awareness and the quick judgement to read the field incredibly well. Purdy/Shanahan is basically a successor of the Montana/Walsh system. There are similarities between Brock and Montana, although Montana is slightly taller with a stronger arm, but both are not considered strong arm QBs.
Their arm strength is pretty similar. Watch that new Joe Montana documentary on Peacock. It shows how much less arm strength than Steve DeBurg. Bill wlsh made the west cost offense and pick Joe in the draft because he was dead accurate i the short and intermediate throws, was poised, had a nack for extending plays/getting out the pass rush. Everything that’s bocks strengths. But arm strength o think Brock might even have more. Plus Brock has a really strong and built lower body. Joe had stork legs lol
@@bryanwong1625 Montana read defenses somewhat better but yeah Brock is quicker. I wouldn't want him to take head shots like Young did back in the day, just grab a few yards then go down .
@@markmiranda9461 Walsh started the WCO when he was the OC with the Bengals. Virgil Carter had the same kind of traits, weaker arm but accurate w shorts and mid passes, read the field well and mobile in the pocket.
I think Steve makes a fantastic point about how being incredibly talented can be a double edged sword. Just because you CAN throw the ball 80 yards flat footed doesn't mean you have to. Sometimes a guy will make more mistakes because they have the talent to sometimes make those plays work. The fact that Brock is limited physically in some ways meaning that he isn't even considering taking some of the risks that a josh Allen or a Bret Favre could make. Sure, it's great when you can throw a dot into tight coverage 50 yards through the air. But sometimes you try that and it gets picked. Brock is going to make the smart play. And he's got some wheels, he's got a quick mind!
Can somebody please tell about his limits cause the arm strength point is invalid because he actually has an underated arm and he can move avoid pressure has pocket presence and great a accuracy then they say height I mean he's 6plus and 220 so then they say size in just saying
Young and Montana have said the whole time that he has something special. You cN hear the near frustration in Young's voice for having said this for so long, whilst others seem to just keep refusing to see it, or just straight deny it.
Totally! I was recruited by Bill Walsh to play quarterback at Stanford during his last year and while I obviously didn't have the talent to become the starter or make it to the NFL... I had something he saw on me and it was my ability to see the field and get the ball out to the right place at the right time. Again, my talent fell short in other areas but that unique trait I had was enough to get me through Stanford which was pretty cool! First time I saw Brock play I could see what he was up to. The dude obviously studies but he also just has that feel that is hard if not impossible to teach. So proud of him and as an undersized quarterback myself back in the day I have so much respect for him! He's three times would I ever could have been and I'm just thrilled to have him on the team I have always loved.
@john-carlosynostroza No way! Bill Walsh recruited you? Nice! But yaa, I remember watching film and highlights of Purdy before the draft and thought to myself that he'll be drafted in the 2nd or 3rd round and he reminded me of a Drew Brees with mobility and at times Russell Wilson, or even Rodgers the way he evades pressure in the pocket and his pocket presence. He can even process quickly and is accurate and on time. I was surprised that he almost went undrafted and the last pick of the draft. Glad our team got him! Hopefully he stays healthy and he continues to ace Shanahan's offense!
@@john-carlosynostroza Facts. Some of us who saw Joe Montana a generation ago knew what happened when Walsh had the perfect QB to fit his system. The only thing Brock hasn't been tested is the comeback game that Montana is so famous for. That coolness under pressure is what made him great.
Brock was a victim of modern NFL copycat scouting. Everyone wants the next Mahomes or Allen. Had Brock been drafted 20 years ago he would’ve been an early rounder
He reminds me of Montana. He has the vision and the ability to read the field. Remember, Joe was not great his first 3 years. Then he became the greatest. Having Bill Walsh, the greatest, elevated him.
Yeah and Joe was skinny and not considered much of an athlete not unlike Tom Brady. However he had the feet of a ballet dancer and the vision of a bird-of-prey
Absofreakinlutely...Walsh seems forgotten but he was the beginning of this offensive revolution and Montanas master mentor...one of the greatest coaches of all time...had a great sense of humor too ❤❤❤ Gooooooo Niners ❤
What Purdy needs is something along the lines of Young's ridiculous TD run against the Vikings. Some kind of jaw dropper play that will shut people up about this.
Mr. RELEVANT just has the poise to know when to hold or fold each play dealt. He trusts his all-pro crew and lets them ball out. Oh, the defense sure makes it comfortable too! Fred is real life Krueger, even in your dreams.
I’m going to repeat this observation. Aside from all the players surrounding Purdy, Purdy played at Iowa State all four years. Trey Lance is an example of how not playing in college proved his downfall. He’s still developing. This is the big mistake college QBs are making, as well as the NFL, they aren’t ready for the NFL.
In Trey's defense, the pandemic year curtailed his ability to play more in college. But yeah, he might have waited another year before entering the draft.
Agreed. The overall number of reps Brock has is a magnitude of reps Trey has. 4 years of HS plus 4 years of college, he's seen it all, loud & quiet games, full & empty stadiums, hostile & friendly crowds, multiple types of coverage, run or pass, etc. Trey is still wet behind the ears. This is all obvious on the field, hence why we are where we are, and they are where they are.
Steve was 100% right about Allen. He had a 100% for sure, easy throw to a guy wide open underneath for a first down, and he chucked it into double coverage another 15-20 yards down the field. Stupidest play I’ve seen so far this season, and I saw Jimmy throw an interception into the end zone that wasn’t 1/10 as dumb as Allen’s decision making. The Bills would have rolled the Jets after Rogers went down if Brock was their QB making rational decisions. At the very least there would have been 3-4 fewer turnovers.
@@joshuaguste6883 LT was brawn and brains on the defensive side. He knocked Montana out. Parcells was a defensive master. At the end of the day, the 9ers won way more.
There's always a game in the season where for some reason, timing is off, recievers drop balls, the ball bounces for the other team everytime, flags get thrown at the worst time. Can you keep that game close and even win it by skin of your teeth.
It’s funny that Young talked about that sixth sense of knowing when a defender is approaching. He learned that the hard way too - I still recall that hit he took that railed his head and he was out with a concussion.
Efficiency is not only under-rated, it is usually unrecognized. Efficiency doesn't make the highlight reel; it just puts up points. Just another day at the office. Another win, who's next.
You can't discount reps man. He was a 4 year starter in college. That experience makes a difference. Especially when the team leaned on you for those 4 years. He knows how to play football.
@@felix3033fr , it's Joe that's always been ehh with organization. Which he's expressed publicly. Steve actually feels grateful they traded Joe away to give him the team
It's interesting from a Bear's fan perspective that Kyle cut bait with Trey. Justin Fields, on the other hand, is still making the same mistakes as last year. It's frustrating. Either a guy has it or he doesn't and Kyle I believe may have also cut bait with Justin or coached him up better. Young said only a handful of teams know how to handle QB's. I don't believe he was talking about the Bears lol.
What separates Purdy from the rest is his ability to look at the information process it in real time and then make the proper play, most of the qb's in the league currently can not do that the way he can regardless of the pieces around him, and it's that part which makes him a Great QB not avg or just good
Steve's point about Josh Allen trying to put on a heroic display to overcome early deficits is spot on. Part of being a successful QB in the NFL is to not only "know when to hold 'em," in the immortal words of Kenny Rogers, but to also "know when to fold 'em." Play not working out as planned? Throw the ball away. Smart football. That's what separates the good QBs from the great.
Bill Walsh reinterated many times that he can't stand an QB that throws interceptions. He made an famous remark"He is just good enough to lose an big game for ya". This was in reference to Steve DeBerg who would throw an interception at the worst time to lose the game.
I'm a Mahomes fan but in Purdy's first 2 games last year, I immediately saw a great potential, calm and collected, great decision making. This guy's gonna be another great QB in the making, imagine being the last player to be picked, and then becoming great with SB rings, wow!
Lionel here in Central California. What we have here is a guy that really understands the game and plays within his ability. He's a quick study with a high football IQ who does his homework and leaves nothing to chance. He knows what it's like to be the under dog and be poised in the moment. It appears that the game is at a speed that he can easily deal with. It also shows when he has to scramble to evade a would be tackler with a spin move or a sidestep. Then you throw in his ability to run the ball. Just saying...
How many "superman" QBs were around when Peyton Manning won his last Super Bowl? Manning showed definitively that a great QB distributes the ball to all his super friends, and his personal superpowers are between his helmet.
It's the footwork. Purdys footwork is excellent. In fact, he reminds me of a young Drew Brees, and thee guys may have stumbled into something magical...
Even if you're just a casual fan of the game and the quarterback position, it's easy to tell that Purdy is a unique talent. He's so fluid. His understanding of Kyle's system enables him to take chances without being reckless. If he makes mistakes, he won't dwell on them. Everyone on that team believes in him and he believes in himself. You can't teach that.
Incredible ability to put the ball where his guy is going to be. Reads the routes quick and makes the right decisions. Nimble feet when he quickly chooses to run. Not the most athletic but covers ground quick with those feet. Definitely a cerebral QB along with the dna of the montanas, aikmans, mannings, bradys. Just has to prove it now.
@@markislivingdeliberately I bleed red n gold but Aikman was smart. Especially his UCLA days, dude couldn't do wrong. Some might say he had less bone head moments than Young, maybe that's why he beat young in the playoffs more times than young beat him.
Talk about the whole league whiffing on Brock.Even our guys were late to the party....but now this phenom of football has forever changed how to draft. Cannot compare his game to many players. We will be comparing future draftees against Purdy. It appears that being a great student of the game and a hefty love for it can payoff. And who would of known that having a great demeanor and a respectful command of men (in a sport) can lead you to Captain Relevant.
Brock owns his opportunities each snap he trusts his recievers to be there and notice kyle trusts him, on 4th and 2 kyle didnt hesitate to say go for the pass
Here's the only word that matters when we talk QBs and I was hoping Steve would nail it but he didn't. "Consistency" and BP13 has proven, albeit in a small sample size of games, he can be and is consistent. Week in, week out. He possesses the mental acuity that other QBs don't have but most importantly, he is consistent in everything he does on game day and in practice. Combined with his mental acuity, he's much further ahead of the curve than a lot of QBs who consistently put up inconsistent stat sheets. Bang Bang Niner Gang #LFG #6 !!!!
Listening to Steve sounds like he was the kind of quarterback that wasn’t behind it. More like he was ahead of it when he was playing. It takes one to know one.
It’s amazing how everyone is looking for the next Brady. This kid Purdy is good but the rush to crown him the next great whatever is crazy. Just let the dude grow and let’s see what happens!
As a guy who really was pulling for Trey, it was never a question about Purdy as the starter. I still think the Darnold move was bull. Especially when so many beat writers said Trey did outplay Sam once preseason started. I think the reality was the Niners knew they wanted Brock, and saw no reason to have an ongoing QB controversy with Trey always in the background. Since Lynch was shopping Trey in February, I think they should have just said they were committed to Brock and told Trey the truth is Feb…NO QB competition, NO let’s see how it goes, NO competition against Darnold…all of that was just them saving face on the optics. Now I just want them to invest in a great O Line to keep Brock upright.
@@RubenAvila clearly I was watching how the Niners moved the ball when Trey was in, and stall every time Sam was in. If you saw anything else you’re blind, didn’t watch the entire games, and are just trolling for Trey hate. Keep it moving. Trey is gone. Sam still sucks. Pick up your panties.
Hope Purdy's confidence is strong enough to realize that sooner or later he is going to have a bad game where nothing goes right. The good ones forget about it the next day and start preparing for the next game and then go out and ace it. I think he has that kind of confidence.
It's funny that he says how Kyle trusts him because if it weren't for injuries he never would have got a chance. Kyle never trusted him based on his practices or college play. He would have just stuck with the guys with the good measurable over the guy with the great head for the game. Something I constantly say is then the nfl is terrible at evaluating talent. You cant tell me that Purdy suddenly developed an aptitued for playing qb mid season when he became the starter. He was obviously better than Trey and Jummy the entire time, but the coaches refused to see it. Brock could go on to be a hall of farmers for all we know and he easily could never have got a chance because the coaches would never have played him if they weren't forced to, no matter how good he was in practice.
Shanahan may not have paid closed attention to Brock at the beginning. But he saw something that made him and Lynch draft him. Shanahan fell into the trap that the rest of the league was following. It wasn't until after all the injuries they had. Then he had no choice but to pay close attention to Brock. Shanahan was still focused on Trey Lance until Brock showed everyone what he had.
U have a point, but I disagree. When we took him, nobody expected him to make the 49ers roster. But he did, we're the most talented Team in Nfl, making our roster says something about u. On top of that he beat out the more experienced backups we already had. Coaches just dont give out Nfl roster spots like candy. U have to earn them, that's why everyone doesn't make it

@bryanwong1625 montana could move around pretty good in his younger years
Their arm strength is pretty similar.
And a calm demeanor which is needed in the playoffs.
He has special intangibles and people don’t know how to scout it so they just discredit the importance of it
@@sequoia1171Totally. He saw the entire field. And he admits he had a monstrous offensive line. Purdy is the real deal.
Montana's third year they won 13 games and then went on to win the SB. Not sure what your standard for great is, but that seems great to me.
Absofreakinlutely...Walsh seems forgotten but he was the beginning of this offensive revolution and Montanas master mentor...one of the greatest coaches of all time...had a great sense of humor too ❤❤❤
Gooooooo Niners ❤
@@sequoia1171lol he did have chicken legs. To his credit he could dunk a basketball at 6’2 and was good basketball player as well.
What Purdy needs is something along the lines of Young's ridiculous TD run against the Vikings. Some kind of jaw dropper play that will shut people up about this.
Aawww naw u can't repeat that run..damn I was young then lol
Brock doesn't have Young's speed and he shouldn't take chances like that especially during the era of the concussion protocol.
He's not Steve Young! He couldn't make a play like that at in his dreams! He's one Micah sack away from season of over !!!
nah he just needs to keep doing what hes doing. who cares what haters say
Uhhh...Isn't that what Young just said NOT to do.
Brock's formula for his success so far is his uncanny ability to optimize the processing and athletic ability he has, at an exceptional level.
Mastering your own style and actualizing it to a point that is effective at a high level is something most professionals never do.
All you need to know is to watch 18 year old Brock tear apart Oklahoma State in his first college game
What year..i wanna see it..!!
What about Steve Young for 49ers GM? He is brilliant, already a successful businessman, a HoF QB and a 49ers for life.
Purdy is not afraid to attack the opposing team's best cornerback, such as All-Pro Patrick Peterson. He's fearless.
He is amping up his resume 😂😂
I love Steve even when i was a kid. I love that lefty. Glad I'm a 9er fan since the 80s. Gang gang 😎 😤 💪 let's goooooo BROCK.
We just love you Steve
Mr. RELEVANT just has the poise to know when to hold or fold each play dealt. He trusts his all-pro crew and lets them ball out. Oh, the defense sure makes it comfortable too! Fred is real life Krueger, even in your dreams.
4th and short.
Jimmy- QB Sneak
Trey- Punt
Brock- Shotgun play action pass
I’m going to repeat this observation. Aside from all the players surrounding Purdy, Purdy played at Iowa State all four years. Trey Lance is an example of how not playing in college proved his downfall. He’s still developing. This is the big mistake college QBs are making, as well as the NFL, they aren’t ready for the NFL.
That why the amount of elite QBs in the NFL are very scarce
In Trey's defense, the pandemic year curtailed his ability to play more in college. But yeah, he might have waited another year before entering the draft.
Trey lance is basically a high school qb he played 5 games in college and sat out a whole year.
Brock is the future
and the future is now
Let's hope he doest fake an injury in the playoffs lol
Smart players beat athletic players at the end of the day. That's why I loved Walsh's teams. They picked brains over brawn.
That said, why did they later develop a hard time beating Parcells Giants? As a Niner fan it seemed like the Giants had the best type matchup.
@@joshuaguste6883 LT was brawn and brains on the defensive side. He knocked Montana out. Parcells was a defensive master. At the end of the day, the 9ers won way more.
I could listen to Steve talk about football all day.
There's always a game in the season where for some reason, timing is off, recievers drop balls, the ball bounces for the other team everytime, flags get thrown at the worst time. Can you keep that game close and even win it by skin of your teeth.
Why does everyone seem to forget he did that last year against Oakland lol
So well said. Love Steve. And I love what Brock is doin. Love this team. God, I love being a niner. LFG
Hell of an interview. We were so spoiled in the bay, but haven't seen in on almore 20 years.
It’s funny that Young talked about that sixth sense of knowing when a defender is approaching. He learned that the hard way too - I still recall that hit he took that railed his head and he was out with a concussion.
I can listen to steve young explain football all day- he’s so eloquent and is spot on…
Efficiency is not only under-rated, it is usually unrecognized. Efficiency doesn't make the highlight reel; it just puts up points. Just another day at the office. Another win, who's next.
The next Joe Montana love watching him play coming from a divisional rival fan.
Didju see CMC's superman spin moves and the WRs superman blocks? Amazing! Great point Steve.
Brock is high floor, medium ceiling. But that’s all we need. Like Steve said, who’s scoring 30 on us?
I wouldn't be so confident about that. They were saying things like that when Brady was younger 🤣🤣
You can't discount reps man. He was a 4 year starter in college. That experience makes a difference. Especially when the team leaned on you for those 4 years. He knows how to play football.
Cowboys, Eagles, Ravens, Jags, Bengals this year. True tests. Can't wait for Eagles with Purdy playing entire game.
Good to see Steve Young back with the 49ers organization.
He’s always been here lol
@@felix3033fr , it's Joe that's always been ehh with organization. Which he's expressed publicly. Steve actually feels grateful they traded Joe away to give him the team
@@felix3033 I know he has but since he got let go by ESPN he has been much more involved.
What separates Purdy from the rest is his ability to look at the information process it in real time and then make the proper play, most of the qb's in the league currently can not do that the way he can regardless of the pieces around him, and it's that part which makes him a Great QB not avg or just good
I think his closet comp is brees
@@DeportillegalAliens thats a good comparison although brees was better at throwing the deep ball
But I think some guys like allen and fave need that coach like holmgrim, farve wasn't the same with out him just like Allen without gmens coach
YO DIS IS HIGH LEVEL ANALYSIS 💯😎
I'm a Mahomes fan but in Purdy's first 2 games last year, I immediately saw a great potential, calm and collected, great decision making. This guy's gonna be another great QB in the making, imagine being the last player to be picked, and then becoming great with SB rings, wow!
Steve said it. It's the system but you have to know where to go with the football and know where your guys are. Cool, calm, and Purdy.
Steve is right, Purdy will have to make some big boy plays outside of this offense for us to win it all. I hope he’s up to it
Hes already proven it.
How many "superman" QBs were around when Peyton Manning won his last Super Bowl? Manning showed definitively that a great QB distributes the ball to all his super friends, and his personal superpowers are between his helmet.
It’s not just Brock’s football ability. I think most people are unaware that he was an academic all-American. This is a very smart guy!
Purdy is what this team has been waiting for. He’s the piece we’ve been missing to get #6
I’m ready for the Steelers to not have that bragging right anymore. And I’m ready for Cowboys fans to have to deal with that fact also.
Steve young is my second favorite quarterback after joe Montana and F*ck espn for firing him
ESPN they don't fire him they can't afford him
steve any quarterback would not see tj watt coming his fast purdy is doing just fine steve you had your glory give purdy is props
It's the footwork. Purdys footwork is excellent. In fact, he reminds me of a young Drew Brees, and thee guys may have stumbled into something magical...
That's what I'm saying his best comp is brees no doubt if he can continue level up!
10:32 love that little flip / spin move on the ball
Yeah, definitely agree with the not gonna make Mistake constantly in a row on a drive
I think he's a player's QB. Not flashy, but damn reliable. You know his receivers love having him. He fits SF like a glove.
Lol I like how you tried to sneak in Aikman among those names as if no one would notice
@@bazimyan😂😂 was thinking the same thing. Really cerebral to hand the ball off and then once in a while do play action or throw it deep to 88 😂
If he wins a superbowl it will be pandemonium across the league and the USA probably. Maybe even great britain and mexico.
@@markislivingdeliberately I bleed red n gold but Aikman was smart. Especially his UCLA days, dude couldn't do wrong. Some might say he had less bone head moments than Young, maybe that's why he beat young in the playoffs more times than young beat him.
Steve Young gives tremendous breakdown and insight to all of this…..
Brock has the potential to win 8 Super Bowls as a starting QB.
Whoa whoa. Easy there. Haha.
Mahomes aint going to win 8
Hahahahaaaa 😂🤣
Must be a trey stan
Aight relax my bot
If they don't fix right side not gonna end wellTjj watt is class act he could of dismantled brock on one of those sacks but he was nice about it
QBs that can extend drives and throw it deep or semi-deep once in a while are good pieces moving forward.
Steve is 💯 percent on Brock
It’s amazing how everyone is looking for the next Brady. This kid Purdy is good but the rush to crown him the next great whatever is crazy. Just let the dude grow and let’s see what happens!
Without reps; nfc; without off season; beats out everyone; out performance Jimmy G; just when he shows up; he owns the o; gifted.
Brock is a gifted player
Teams needed to watch his College games to see his instinks but Steve is spot on and of course knows but said it well mom
Hall Of Famer Steve Young! What great memories from that man.
Purdy Goated. Top 3 QB in NFL. One of the best ever.
Brock is that dude. Superbowl incoming. Mark my words.
Young made some Superman plays back in his days. Damn!
Brock is just that good.....up next the Rams! One game at a time.
The 3 interceptions he’s talking about Josh Allen.
Sam was a league above Trey during preseason. What were you watching?
@@RubenAvila clearly I was watching how the Niners moved the ball when Trey was in, and stall every time Sam was in. If you saw anything else you’re blind, didn’t watch the entire games, and are just trolling for Trey hate. Keep it moving. Trey is gone. Sam still sucks. Pick up your panties.
After he beat the Raiders last season , I knew he was our guy‼️‼️😂😂💯💯💯
QB IQ can not be taught. Brock has it. He's so fun to watch.
Watch the first series against the Steelers. Purdy comes up to the line and look at his eye’s moving side to side observing the defense!
So happy we have Brock as our nr 1 QB he sure earned it. No more "when is Trey ready?"
Imagine if we had Steve Young as quarterbacks coach.
Hope Purdy's confidence is strong enough to realize that sooner or later he is going to have a bad game where nothing goes right. The good ones forget about it the next day and start preparing for the next game and then go out and ace it. I think he has that kind of confidence.
Iowa QBs. First Kurt Warner, now Brock Purdy. (Northern Iowa, Iowa State)
How about Iowa TEs.
Fo Sho! Too many to freaking mention!@@sharull6074
Quiet as its kept.... SF 49ers are the innovators of NFL players. which is why they watch and monitor our decisions,
It's funny that he says how Kyle trusts him because if it weren't for injuries he never would have got a chance.
I think your right.
@@Rhaspun that's kind of a cop out. Teams draft tons of players, they don't see anything special in most of them
U have a point, but I disagree. When we took him, nobody expected him to make the 49ers roster. But he did, we're the most talented Team in Nfl, making our roster says something about u. On top of that he beat out the more experienced backups we already had. Coaches just dont give out Nfl roster spots like candy. U have to earn them, that's why everyone doesn't make it
He's a sneaky athlete
Just have fun, and get things done 😉
Can you not use pregame footage from before the NFC championship game?? It's like watching JFK shake hands in Dallas.
Lmaooooo “moments before disaster”
Bahahahha
Mannnn great point 😂😂😂
Steve is right on the money dak never gonna get it cause he is what he is just like Josh Allen they wanna play hero ball and not team ball. Brock smart enough to get the ball to his skill position player and let them do what there payed for to make plays.
