First time I saw the word "colonel" I was so mad cuz I was trying to read a neighbor kid a 101 Dalmatians story, and I knew the dog's name, and that word WAS NOT it. Her mom assured me it was right, and English is weird
It's simple, 27th cousin! The word "colonel" is very old, and while the people who wrote about armies are very proper, those who serve in them are not and especially weren't that long ago. So the sounds diverged while the spelling remained!
Nope, weirder. It came from French (who got it from Italian), which had two spellings and two pronunciations. Then when it made the jump into English they took one spelling and the others pronunciation and stuck them together. Because English isn't a language, it's three languages in a trench coat that lures other languages into a dark alley, knocks them out and then rifles through their pockets for anything "interesting".
Blame the french for the spelling. Originally in Italian the leader Column was a Colonello Middle French had it spelled Koronel. Thats about the time the word came to English. English kept the French pronunciation but the Italian spelling. English will often take the easiest pronunciation but a spelling that helps point to meaning or etymology. Colonel leads a Column of soldiers.
It hurts thinking about that as i am native Polish speaker and our words are read as writen and Colonel is Pułkownik because he leads Pułk (regiment). I am not ganna like english is often illogical to me like Queue why is that writen like that and then read as english letter Q
@@diooverheaven6561 English orthography was mostly fixed before the vowel and consonant shifts of the fourteenth through seventeenth centuries - the pronunciation changed, but the spelling did not. In addition, words acquired new meanings and there were ongoing borrowings from other language with the spelling sometimes being anglicised and sometimes not. For example, the French word _gentil_ gave us gentle (with two separate meanings), gentry, and jaunty.
@@condorboss3339 that's interesting but as i was saying my native language is Polish so it feels weird as Polish is more or less "here is alphabet and here are rules of how to read consonants" and you are set to go as you read exactly as it is writen however there is variation in Polish that is a problem like in english there is nothing like that. You know your language well so can you tell me why you need: the, a, an?
@@diooverheaven6561 'The' refers to a specific individual or item. 'The cat' would mean one specific cat - for example, 'The cat that lives in my house.' 'A' refers to non-specific items. While the word that would become colonel originated in Italy it then went to France where two separate spellings and pronunciations are used interchangeably. Only the English would be stupid enough to take one spelling and the other pronunciation for one concept.

1st Story: SPEARS! The Quam used SPEARS! And we orbital dropped Death Mecha Tanks on them…HELL YEAH!
And take note that the humans were going EASY on the Quam, because they didn't just shoot them up with starship weaponry.
Peace...through superior firepower.
Nothing like a 40mm to ruin the enemies concentration.
With sound graph, I visualize you as an advanced AI that is telling us of the human race
shhhhhh don't tell everyone....
That explains who controls the nanite swarm.
Man that guy in the Second Story is really messing with that aliens mind isn't he
I would love to see Jeff Dunham's reaction while he listens to this.
Alien:NOOOO MUH HONOR!!!
humans: Hehe, nukes go kaboom.
When in doubt about humanity, embrace the line from Ambassador Molari regarding humans in war.
Also, Drop feet first into Hell.
The "r" sound in colonel comes from him, when he's upset... and they usually are about something
"Millions for defense but not one cent for tribute"
The humans must have been laughing so hard to be engaged in battle by aliens with SPEARS and SWORDS
Wait, did I miss the part where the aliens are supposed to be space-fairing? Why the hell are the Quam using spears of all things?

Swords and spear versus Mechs ?
This will not end well for the Quam.

Wait... I thought the Quam would have advanced weapons since they're the first one to make contact with the humans?
Remember, they believe in Martial warfare. Martial warfare is something from the middle ages, weapons included.
