I learned to double clutch while being taught how to drive a 1972 MC-7 Greyhound bus. It’s a simple cadence of “ And one and two and…” Depress the clutch pedal on the first “and.” Move the shifter out of gear on “one.” Depress the clutch pedal on the second “and.” Move the shifter to the next higher gear on “two. Release the clutch on the third “and.”
The next lesson is proper downshifting. It’s probably not something to worry about too much in a Model A on level ground, but it was an important skill to have when climbing grades or needing to slow down in a bus full of passengers. Double clutch downshifting uses the same cadence as upshifting but instead of getting off of the accelerator, you depress the accelerator slightly to match the rpm range of the lower gear. Greyhound’s buses did not have tachometers, so a driver learned to do this by ear. When you get really good at it, you can up and downshift without the clutch, just by matching the engine RPM. I would love to see if that works in a Model A.
It’s kind of sad that Greyhound retired all of their manual transmission buses by around 1982 or so, and today, almost nobody sells a manual transmission car anymore.

I taught myself how to drive stick on a model A Ford when I was 7 years old. Grandpa handed me the key and i drove the car out of the barn and drove it around the farm. He wasn’t even in the car with me. That was 40 years ago. Wow time flies . The car is long gone and my grandfather is long dead.
