A used 21 G that was loaded in 21 was about 180,000 usd now retails with less than 10k miles for about 190-205k.. those were 300,000 when MB halted production temporarily. In the U.K., trying to source a new one from stock is not possible. As for a factory order, you might receive it before the next updated model - and look how long that took. Franchised Mercedes dealer in Scotland, 15-24 months. The salesman did state closer to 24 months for a RHD version and that was for the G400. He smiled and said “G63’s are easier to get, if you are willing to pay a premium”. WTF? Range Rovers and Defenders are the same - black market deals to be done
Labor rates and prices of parts are never going to go down though. Have fun paying an arm and a leg for service and parts.. but if you can afford it then hey, more power to you
Yep, I bought a used Benz when I was younger, found out the cost to repair was ridiculous, dealer or no. I was amused by the on hold recording playing "enjoy free espresso and putting green while you wait for your car to be serviced" until I realized that meant this was gonna be expensive... Even non-dealer people assume you have money and hike their prices and there's instant class envy attitude, people act like you cut them off even if you change lanes a quarter mile ahead of them, this is where I learned that to road rage against someone reveals you have an inferiority complex. Owning a Mercedes works against you in any negotiation, some women are instantly attracted, revealing they're worthless, it was a nice car, drove like a steel cloud, but for the money, you're going to get more car elsewhere, and I for sure don't trust Mercedes workmanship after the planned obsolescence started being built into it and I saw many nice well cared for cars stalled at the side of the road or in the road the failure was so dramatic and sudden and without warning. Probably because of the wiring harness being sandwiched between two plastic panels until the vibration rubbed through the wires insulation, causing a $50k repair bill in cars 5 years old. No thanks. I Don't care how low the price is, I'm probably never going to own a Mercedes again, I'm not into the status thing, to me that's idiots revealing how stupid they are to value the envy of others. I would MUCH rather be anonymous in a sleeper car with equivalent luxury.

Supply vs demand determines price. 1606 G Wagons for sale = increased supply which decreases price. Lots of potential reasons for increased supply and/or decreased demand.
I traded in a 2017 Mercedes-Benz AMG C63 Cabriolet with 39k miles on it back in June for almost what I paid for it 2.5 years earlier and then watched it sit on the dealer lot while they listed it for $13k more than what they gave me for it. They kept lowering the price and lowering the price until finally in October of 2022 it disappeared from their inventory. They were asking less than what they gave me for it on trade in at that time. Not sure if they sold it or if they sent it to auction but either way, they lost money on that deal. I would love a G-wagon and I would off-road it (I take my 2022 Lexus GX off road all the time) but they are a bit out of my price range.
I agree, it’s just a status symbol, many G owners don’t even know how to drive them off road. The Land Cruiser in my opinion beats the G Wagon hands down,
The G wagons we see on the streets are built for rappers and pimps. Slightly more de-speced with some decent wheel/ tires is pretty spectacular (And I own a LC200)
@@mvubu6823 yes the thousands and thousands of g wagons on the road are ALL owned by pimps and rappers… How about people buy whatever car makes them happy. So many “car” people seems to be so far up their own rear end when it comes to expensive vehicles. It’s truly a bizarre phenomenon.

There was speculation that the g63 was going to be discontinued hence greedy dealers started hoarding, overpaying for them. Now Mercedes said there going to continue to make the V8 and prices are going down
Vehicle prices have gotten out of control and have been for about 5 years now. Maybe some day the common folk can afford. Modestly priced vehicle without having to pay through the nose on one.
like the unimog , its a off road beast , military spec is the 4x4s2 need to be more basic base off road model , than for rodeo drive and car valet park In a posh ski resort or palm beach
The problem with the G-wagon is, is that they are not only expensive to buy but also expensive to maintain. Also they are a lot less reliable than you would think.
I am not a fan of manufacturers artificially creating a limited inventory and then asking crazy prices. An interesting video would be to analyze the financial cost to manufacturers of building these special vehicles versus the price they ask for them. Can't see Mercedes ever making a lot of G Wagons due to the poor gas mileage. Also as others have mentioned, there is the cost of ownership like maintenance and insurance. I think as interest rates continue to rise the cost of every expensive item will come down to a point where the target customer might again be able to afford the item. I can't see the cost of certain exclusive vehicles ever coming down too much though. Porsche is never going to make many of the GT3 RS or GT2 RS so there will always be enough people who can easily afford those rare models. I am just very glad to NOT be in the market for any vehicle or property at the moment. Yikes!
Mercedes managed to set a new record in 2021 with G wagon. with 41,174 vehicles delivered world-wide. Of this only 8500 were sold in US. 2022 is Ukraine war, soaring fuel, heating food prices in Europe, plus no sales in Russia.
Not just any street in LA. Olympic Blvd, Wilshire Blvd., Bev Hills and Santa Monica Blvd. These cars are driveway art, meant to impress the neighbors and passersby, even if you’re not rich.
Great video guys. I think the production numbers play into this as well. If they keep the production numbers artifically low they can mark up as much as they want.
What would be amazing is even after the price cut: people don't buy from these dealers who had ridiculous markups. But thr public forgets real fast and wants instant gratification.
Saying the G Wagon is the most reliable Mercedes in the past 30 years is really not saying anything at all. If i was 100 miles from a mechanic on an off road trail, I would trust a 1998 4Runner with 250,000 miles and a rear locker before I would ever think about a G Wagon. That 4Runner in good shape probably will cost you around $6,000.
Hopefully these dealers can eat the flooring prices. For all the shady price gouging they did. I know these are still going for 50K over in my neck of the woods So Cal
I just recently experienced the same „shit“ with a Chevrolet Corvette, V8. The dealer in California told me, that I would have to wait for 2 to 3 years to get one and he was asking for MRSP + 50‘000 extra!!! Good when you don’t need or want to buy a new car now…
My name is Shakah , I live in Los Angeles and South Florida and Both of you guys are correct about the Gwagon , I believe the underline issue or should I say good issue is that these newer vehicles(SUVs) are looking better, have the same Lux features and if someone is a serious off roader the G is NOT on the list in America . I’ve owned 5 RANGE Rovers 89-2016 ….NEVER AGAIN !!! I’m going Raptor or Tundra ….or when things cool down and reset -ELECTRIC PICK UP 😎
Back in 2021 I was pimping my hose for $500 an hour ,now I can only get $300 an hour! It's not just the car business it's hurting, it's hard out here for a pimp.
I have a 2019 m5 comp Bought used 85k 13k miles put 30k down at 2.99 interest rate. I’m still good even if it falls. And I love the car so I’m not concerned about falling prices
Its not really a crash. Its a correction. Prices on many things have been way over inflated. Partially due to Pandemic, shortages, hording, and price gouging.
My pal was a car dealer in the 80s he used to buy these G-WAGONS REALLY CHEAP AS NO DEALERS WOULD TOUCH THEM AS SOON AS SOME SO CALLED CELEBRITIES STARTED DRIVING ABOUT IN THEM THE PRICE WENT THROUGH THE ROOF AMAZING HOW THINGS COME FULL CIRCLE
I live in Silicon Valley, and can confidently say another segment of the G-Wagon market is wealthy, middle-aged women who like big SUVs. From what I see out the streets anyway, that even seems like the largest segment--at least around here.
I totally disagree. As a highline car dealer and lessor, I first bought a G wagon (Gelandewagen) in 2002 and have driven many since. I would personally NEVER buy one and never chose to drive one even though I usually could. Functionally, the vehicle is extremely limited. What good is it? Other than offroad, it's only a status symbol. It is not ergonomic or comfortable, either in the driver's seat or the rear seats. It has a terrible turning radius, a short wheelbase, and a high center of gravity so it's not nimble and has a lousy ride. At highway speed it's like a giant shoebox going down the road with high wind / road noise and awful fuel economy. Its origin is from the 70s as a military vehicle built by Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Austria. When military use was discontinued a marketer in Stuttgart had an idea to keep the factory going: let's give it a leather interior some lux car amenities, put an MB star on the hood and sell it to Americans. It worked!
I agree, I test drove one in 2012, back when a G63 was "only"120K and you could get a discount. After 10 minutes behind the wheel, I knew it would be a horrible vehicle for every day use. Felt unstable at 80 mph, crap gas mileage and as you stated not really comfortable, yeah the doors sound awesome when they are shut and the thing is built like a vault. What's funny is that it's supposed to be the ultimate utility vehicle , but it come with 21 inch wheels and low profile street tires.
My friend had a G63……it was ALWAYS in the shop, and it got about 9-10mpg on premium gas. My friend got rid of it, he said owning it was like throwing hundred dollar bills out the car window on the freeway. ……He recently got a Genesis GV80.
As an owner of several G Wagons, let me give you the background information. In 1971 (53 years ago), the Mercedes G Wagon was designed and created by Daimler Mercedes and several Iranian (Persian) engineers at the specific request of the King of Iran (Persia) Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. This was a secret project until February 1979. The G Wagon was initially intended to be a military vehicle exclusive to Iran (Persia) and it was never intended to be commercialized to be used by the civilian population. Due to the 1978 revolution in Iran, the Mercedes G Wagon was never delivered to Iran and stayed at the Mercedes factory for over a year. Since Mercedes was left with thousands of military-style vehicles (G Wagon), they couldn’t sell them to the general population. During that one year, Mercedes took away a lot of the Iranian military equipment, repainted the G Wagons with different commercial paints, and in February 1979 (45 years ago), introduced the G Wagon to the world. The father of the G Wagon is rooted in Iran (Persian), and today, we would not have the G Wagon accessible to us had the 1978 Iranian revolution didn’t occur. So, we owe our deepest gratitude to the Iranians (Persians) for the G Wagon.
How i wish Mercedes would get off their high horses and sell the basic version at a reasonable price, like in Europe.. We don't need the AMG craziness, the base model is fine as it is!
Before this video I would have guessed they sold new for just over $100k. By the title I was guessing you could buy a newer used one for $40k. I just got rid of an Audi Q7 because the warranty just expired and there is no way I’m going to pay for their repairs. Brake jobs are $1,500. It costs over $1,000 to replace the battery. After just 7 years the leather was starting to crack. So what are you paying for? We traded it in and got $26k and bought a baby bronco and are very happy with it. I doubt I would have bought one of these Mercedes if they were selling at $40k
loved the three requisites to iconic: 1. functional.... do what it says it will and do it WELL 2. reliable.... can't be respected for generations if it won't last generations 3. FUN.... smile-inducing inside and out
A current model year vehicle can never be considered an investment. Conventional wisdom dictates that vehicles don't appreciate until they are 30 years old, and they must be rare and unique.
Glad to see prices coming down. was looking at G63 but mark uos were crazy. I still had to pay $15K over MSRP to get a Jeep Rubicon 392, but it is much more affordable than a G63.
Mercedes announced that they were going to stop production on the G class by 2020 and that pushed the prices up on top of the chip shortage / c*vid car taxes and dealer mark ups. Then mercedes said they will continue making the G class till 2024 causing prices to come down as 2022 models were no longer “the last ones” to be made. When they call off the G lass again the ‘last models’ will shoot up in prices. Imo
When I saw that prices were up at 300 grand for one of these tin cans I almost had a heart attack. Even 100 Grand they would be way overpriced. I would rather get a sweet souped-up four-door Bronco for like 85 grand. They are way cooler looking. It seems that these kind of Mercedes have replaced the Hummer in the category of hey look at me I think I'm an important d-bag. I can't even imagine what service and parts cost for a Mercedes like this or any for that matter
@@33Luger I'm not talking about those pansy for Broncos sports. I'm talking about the tough ones and the new Raptor Bronco is insane. @@33Luger that's great and that's what it's all about. I do realize everybody has different opinions and is different regarding wants needs and what they can afford etc. What made me react so harshly was hearing at one point some of those cars were up to like 250 Grand or even $300,000. Also, some people purchase those if they come way down in price and then the price for maintenance, labor, and parts down the road wipe them out. Also maybe if I drove one I would change more of my mind as well. For me, there are so many cars or SUVs Etc that are so much less expensive than this that I would want to drive. Cheers and I hope you enjoy! Happy holidays
The Question is what will happen to Dealerships in the long Haul? That over price made many companies want to remove the dealership system, and will soon be pressuring states to change the laws so they are not needed. The buy direct programs are becoming more popular and it has been the way many leasing companies get their inventory.
My problem with buy direct is that what will stop the manufacturer from simply raising prices whenever they want. I don't think it solves the problem ultimately. Besides dealers give way too much money to politicians so I doubt there will be any major changes anywhere.
@@snupermoto723 Not really, they are just one of many places that can do warranty work. Tesla proved you do not really need them just a show room o use as a shipping location. It can also double as the service supplier that is the dealership. Again it is the State laws that force Dealerships on us, and Ford and GMC are looking at ways around them. The part about then the Factories can just charge what ever they want is not a good one as Dealerships already do that to you on hot models. Factories are more interested in a life span long enough for you to want another one and short enough so they can provide it before bankrupting the company.
Most luxury cars are overvalued with their MSRP, so it's just reasonable to have huge depreciation for used luxury cars, especially as demand falls off the cliff for many of these models. Unless a Corvette SUV is coming out by 2024, I'm definitely looking to get a preowned Lambo Urus for below/around $100K or perhaps a used Audi RS Q8 for even a lot less.
I bought my 2021 2-Door Manual Transmission Bronco for $30,555. I'm good. No G-Wagon for me. And I bet I get more attention from my vehicle than this one (from just average people). Interesting take on the suggested three aspects of "Iconic Vehicles": 1. Does what it says its going to do. 2. Reliable. 3. Fun. My take version of this: 1. 2-doors, not 4. 2. Fun. Literally every 2-door vehicle that is also fun is iconic. Reliability and its performance at the Taco Bell drive through are "nice to have", not must haves. Look it up man.
Great video.. but are not as “reliable” as they are being made out to be. The rust problems are class action lawsuit level and are plagued with check engine lights just as common as a 2004 Land Rover Discovery.
We need pick up trucks to come down with the prices for sure something that we all need for vehicles like this it’s nice to have but they’re not exactly my style
A lot of the G pricing bubble was due to dealers buying them from one-another thinking they were an investment.
Those greedy dealerships MARK UP all the cars that think they are worth money C8 Ford trucks etc. GREAT ! nobody should buy with crazy mark ups

So happy these are tanking. Can't wait to pick one up for normal depreciated pricing
Labor rates and prices of parts are never going to go down though. Have fun paying an arm and a leg for service and parts.. but if you can afford it then hey, more power to you
@@FJB74 Yep we have a GLC 350 and its $1750 to replace and recalibrate a windshield at Mercedes dealership. European car prices are insane for repair.
@@drewmorg. good god.
@@drewmorg. Recalibrate the windshield?
My local dealers upsell them by $75k and $100k respectively. They’re still selling!
One of the best and bullet proof cars i ever had❤💪in 4 years with my 08 g55 amg i spend $3k lol with no issues now and i drove 40k and now its 175k original miles and its like new and very strong 👊💪💪💪💪💪
Saw that same article this morning. You guys need to start looking for one now!
Supply vs demand determines price. 1606 G Wagons for sale = increased supply which decreases price. Lots of potential reasons for increased supply and/or decreased demand.
Well said fellas. Both are right on with the different perspectives. There’s never one type of buyer.
Thanks!
Ill never forget when i saw a used $320,000 GWAGON at a dealer in Woodland Hills. This was in 2020... someone bought it nearly a year later...
The Land Cruiser in my opinion beats the G Wagon hands down,
I’d take an LC over a G any day.
The G wagons we see on the streets are built for rappers and pimps.
Slightly more de-speced with some decent wheel/ tires is pretty spectacular
(And I own a LC200)
@@mvubu6823 yes the thousands and thousands of g wagons on the road are ALL owned by pimps and rappers… How about people buy whatever car makes them happy. So many “car” people seems to be so far up their own rear end when it comes to expensive vehicles. It’s truly a bizarre phenomenon.

911 those sell for north of 90K from the manufacturer. If you get one for 80k with less then 20,000 miles you lucky

Thank goodness, hopefully they’ll plummet to where I can afford one
Vehicle prices have gotten out of control and have been for about 5 years now. Maybe some day the common folk can afford. Modestly priced vehicle without having to pay through the nose on one.

Nice review!! But, I think I'll just hang on to my Toyota 4 runner Limited.
The problem with the G-wagon is, is that they are not only expensive to buy but also expensive to maintain.
Also they are a lot less reliable than you would think.
I have not had this experience. Go to look at part prices and you will find them very affordable.
deferred maintenance is expensive; otherwise a very reliable vehicle even when used off-road (as it was intended)
This guy doesn’t own a g wagon lol, it’s not that expensive to maintain if you can afford one
Yikes!
What inventory isn’t limited artificially or otherwise. I’ve never understood the complaint
Why we need the Suzuki Jimny! Affordable similar performance
Great video guys. I think the production numbers play into this as well. If they keep the production numbers artifically low they can mark up as much as they want.
992 GT3 is one of the only sports/super cars that's consistently still way over sticker. It's holding value better than almost everything

Heck, I'd take one off the Canadian armed forces if I could!
Canadian armed forces use covered wagons not G-Wagons.
TFL should buy the cheapest used G wagon and make some videos with it.
In Southern California & Vegas I've seen these vehicles selling for way more than they're worth, and that was just the other day.

They have a huge tax right off too which was an even bigger driving factor in sales.
Hopefully all of these crazily-price electric vehicles/trucks come down in price too..
was it in danger of rolling when it went up on 3 wheels?
I doubt G Wagon actual sale prices will be falling. Vehicle is on too high demand.
The Price is too high. Good to know that folks are loosing money on their grift!
Loosing so much money. Lol
I doubt I would have bought one of these Mercedes if they were selling at $40k
lmfao just tell us ur poor already 😂😂😂

1. functional.... do what it says it will and do it WELL
2. reliable.... can't be respected for generations if it won't last generations
3. FUN.... smile-inducing inside and out
I guess that's why the older models are classic vehicles opposed to the news ones.
Imo
Are you all going to do an update about the 2022-2023 G63 4x4e2 complete recalls?
When I saw that prices were up at 300 grand for one of these tin cans I almost had a heart attack. Even 100 Grand they would be way overpriced. I would rather get a sweet souped-up four-door Bronco for like 85 grand. They are way cooler looking. It seems that these kind of Mercedes have replaced the Hummer in the category of hey look at me I think I'm an important d-bag. I can't even imagine what service and parts cost for a Mercedes like this or any for that matter
Broncos are everywhere. G Wagons still turn heads.
@@33Luger I'm not talking about those pansy for Broncos sports. I'm talking about the tough ones and the new Raptor Bronco is insane. Also, some people purchase those if they come way down in price and then the price for maintenance, labor, and parts down the road wipe them out. Also maybe if I drove one I would change more of my mind as well. For me, there are so many cars or SUVs Etc that are so much less expensive than this that I would want to drive. The Question is what will happen to Dealerships in the long Haul?
That over price made many companies want to remove the dealership system, and will soon be pressuring states to change the laws so they are not needed. The buy direct programs are becoming more popular and it has been the way many leasing companies get their inventory.
dealership is the manufacturer's bread and butter, they're not going anywhere.
@@snupermoto723 lol 😂 you wish. I hate dealership

Interesting take on the suggested three aspects of "Iconic Vehicles":
1. Does what it says its going to do.
2. Reliable.
3. Fun.
My take version of this:
1. 2-doors, not 4.
2. Fun.
Literally every 2-door vehicle that is also fun is iconic. Reliability and its performance at the Taco Bell drive through are "nice to have", not must haves. Look it up man.

What you’re saying is the prices have come down but it’s still over and about RRP
A small correction: IMHO the PRICE of the G-Wagen is coming down. NOT the value!
The value, in the sense of utility, remains the same.
Over evaluated market call the “G-bubble” nice to see it going back to reality.
This is great some of us commoners will be able to get some of these vehicles that have been priced out of our range
We need pick up trucks to come down with the prices for sure something that we all need for vehicles like this it’s nice to have but they’re not exactly my style
The higher interest rates should drive down prices, plus a recession.
I had one 15 years ago. It’s not bulletproof or fun. It’s maintenance was terrible and mpg was horrendous.
It is non-sensical that a vehicle would sell for 2X its sticker price. Of course prices need to come back down to reasonable sane levels.
