    I'm of the opinion that Clara is hated by so many fans because the writers fell in love with her; the longer she was involved in the series, the more she was protected from the consequences of her actions.

      I think that was the point of Face The Raven, giving Clara the consequences she deserved for trying to be the Doctor.
      Then they fucked it up with 12 bringing her back.

    • @julia.24
      @julia.24 4 роки тому +24

      maskiiofficial i mean the whole point of “bringing her back” was that the action was /wrong/ - Clara had accepted her death and the Doctor trying to bring her back showed just how far he’d strayed from his morals thanks to their friendship. It wasn’t what she asked for, and was in fact the opposite of what she wanted, so he faced the consequences for his poor behavior and lost his memories of their friendship which were driving him to abandon his principles. i really liked it as a twist on the doctor wiping companion’s memories without their consent, such as with donna.

      @@paulashe7460 That might be true but all the main companions have to have some sort of importance in the DW universe in order for them to keep being the main companions. Rose went from 0 to 60 in a matter of 2 or 3 episodes. Id say Clara was flushed out as a character even better with her whole back story with her mom and all the other stuff. As compared to Bill Potts, which I liked a lot, left me a bit bitter when at the end she got "saved" by the girl in the puddle? Really? In my opinion that was a missed opportunity.
      As for Ashildir, never really cared much about that character. My only guess is that sinces shes played by Maissie Williams thats why she made her up to be "important" which in my opinion, she really wasnt. Didnt do an awful lot her character.

  • @mindyp51a
    @mindyp51a 6 років тому +162

    Duh! The reason Clara became more and more "powerful," as Crispy Pro put it, was because it was all leading up to her death! The point of her becoming reckless and believing she was as capable as the Doctor was that THIS was exactly what CAUSED her death. You have to look at the whole picture.
    I liked Clara a lot. As someone else posted here, following up on Amy and Rory was difficult (I would even call it a "thankless" job).
    The only time I had a real problem with her was the way she reacted to Smith regenerating into Capaldi. It didn't make sense...she had met the Doctor's previous incarnation (Tennant) during the 50th anniversary storyline, so why would she have a problem with his different appearance? (Of course, that wasn't the actor's faultj--it just wasn't written well enough to explain her confusion.
    Don't understand the hate at all, though.

      clara and the doctor had a flirtatious relationship, clearly attraction there on both sides, clara was the smartest companion the doctor ever had, able to keep up with his insanely fast dialogue. which is why she was picked in the casting. she was maybe kept on as companion for slightly too long. and yes amy and rory for me are above her because they gave birth to the doctors eventual wife river song, and there tragic demise as well. i put rose first as the doctors love of his whole life, 2 amy and rory 3 clara 4 donna (and wilfred). i judge this based on the emotional impace of bidding farewell to them. in terms of pure importance to the timeline-it would be amy and rory first, then rose then clara..

      It was the fact that she felt she would spend her entire life with Smith, she was compeltley in love with him. Smith to Capaldi was the biggest personality and overall change in all of Doctor Who. Capaldi was confused, and had forgotten Clara, still she stuck by him and tried to help him. Everything had changed so fast, and she was scarred by the fact that she had been left behind by The Doctor twice, that is why she became more and more like The Doctor, so she wouldn't be expendable. She wanted to be with The Doctor forever. Before he was young and the love of her life, then he was old and confused. Everything about him had changed, all except one thing, he was The Doctor, and he loved her, and that's what she had to be reminded of.

      She knew, objectively, that the Doctor regenerated, and had met other incarnations, but she still considered Eleven to be “her” Doctor, so to speak - the Doctor she knew and trusted most who knew her best. When he changed, and changed so strongly, becoming cold to her and incredibly different, she understood the emotional reality of regeneration and grieved the loss of Eleven, her friend, to someone regarding her very much like a stranger.

    For me, it was because every episode with her in it felt like fan fiction, written by her. The whole story revolved around her for no reason, everyone listened to and respected her for just no reason. She was like a blank slate for fan-girls to replace themselves with, and despite dominating the story, added nothing to it.

      Clara had a pretty distinct personality. Have you stopped to think that maybe she wasn't trying to be the doctor? She was being herself but how dare a companion try to be something other than a sidekick. She didn't get reckless because she was trying to be the doctor but because she was trying to feel something after danny's death. I am glad that Rose won you over by staying in her place .

    • @ThrottleKitty

      She wasn't being herself, that's my whole point. "Trying to be the doctor" just isn't a personality, no matter how you spin it. Nah, I enjoyed her as a companion. She did have a lot more power than most previous companions, but it was done in a way that made sense. I mean she stepped into his time line. And it changed her. It was sad she became so reckless. But taking on the Doctor's morals and feeling like she was invincible on top of Danny's death it also made sense.

    • @Leylaashley
      @Leylaashley 4 роки тому +6

      Addendum: Rose also had a bit of power on the Doctor too though if we think about it. Shit she looked into the heart of the TARDIS, and absorbed the Time Vortex in a sense. She was also laced through the Doctor's History. Bad Wolf anyone? I've half wondered if we'd ever see that crop up again honestly, but who knows. She had a small part to play in the 50th anniversary as the Moment anyway. But Clara wasn't the first to bend the rules as a companion anyway.

    The only negative things I can think of with Clara are that she really didn’t fit well with Danny Pink; their relationship was extremely bland. Also by the end she was a bit annoying because she wanted trouble and adventure (like when she was hanging off the TARDIS). But when she died and said “Let me be brave” I remembered how much I love her character. People seem to think that you have to be strong and comedic and badass to be interesting. Clara was not boring or bland in any way. She was young and terrified but the adventures with the doctor allowed her to be brave. The doctor noticed the change he had made in her and he regretted the fact that although she was brave, she was starting to lose herself. She is my favourite companion and showed great growth as a character. She was never meant to be strong, she was meant to be brave.

    • @puppycatsbee
      @puppycatsbee 5 років тому +7

      I didn't really find her recklessness annoying. Really it just showed that she felt like she didn't have much else to live for. In a way she was still depressed after Danny's death. Maybe she felt like there's no point in trying to survive anymore if she can't be an ordinary human being and have a normal life. Might as well live as much as you can and experience all the adventure that you could take hold of until it's your time to go. She never really felt like she could fit in as a normal person anyway. That was always an important part of her character.

      But she's not... The Doctor is. Clara was born to save The Doctor because The Doctor was so important. All his other companions have saved him before, so whats the big deal? The fact that she became more like The Doctor was intentional, not to make her look special or badass, it was to show how much of a burden that was, how to toxic The Doctor's and Clara's relationship was, and mostly, how, no matter how hard you try, you can't be the same as The Doctor, no matter how invincible you feel, you're still Human, and that was her downfall. I agree that it would be cool if they had one version that was a companion for 3 or 4 episodes and then dies only for the doctor to meet another version later. Her story should have ended with The Name of the Doctor. I'd like to see Jenna Coleman come back as a different Clara though.

    Someone said that they liked her, if not for the fact she had become the most important character on Doctor Who, and I responded:
    But she's not... The Doctor is. Clara was born to save The Doctor
    because The Doctor was so important. All his other companions have saved
    him before, so whats the big deal? The fact that she became more like
    The Doctor was intentional, not to make her look special or badass, it
    was to show how much of a burden that was, how toxic The Doctor's and
    Clara's relationship was, and mostly, how, no matter how hard you try,
    you can't be the same as The Doctor, no matter how invincible you feel,
    you're still Human, and that was her downfall. I think it was dark, and
    beautiful. What happens when you run and keep running, you think you're
    catching up, but one wrong move and...

    1. Clara was ret-conned into the Doctor's entire continuity. As if that wasn't enough, she got ret-conned again into his childhood.
    2. Clara the Doctor - continuous recurring theme starting in Flatline (which was actually pretty good), then the insulting ruse in the series 8 finale, culminating with her own TARDIS? It sure has the look of Moffat angling for a spin-off. Maybe he thought a female Doctor wouldn't fly.
    3. Clara the liar - she is so lying and duplicitous, especially to poor Danny Pink. And to think Danny overcomes his programming through Power of Love(tm) for someone so dishonest.
    4. Clara "quits" - She quit in Kill the Moon. Then un-quit, quit again, and un-quits again while lying to both parties involved in a single episode. Quits again in the finale while lying. And then back the very next episode. All in the span of less than a year! Gone again in Face the Raven, "and then Hell Bent came around"!
    One of these alone might be ok. But add them all up with the inconsistent characterization and she's terrible. She's almost bad fan-fiction.

    My problem with Clara is that the show became more about her than the doctor, people try to say the same thing about Rose but I disagree, the show back then was more about their ROMANCE but not about HER, the doctor was still the main character. While I wouldn't say that Clara lacked personality traits, I would say that she was given way too much power as a character, to the point were she was bordering on being a Mary Sue; She was born to save the doctor, made him pick the right Tardis, save his life a thousand times all in the same episode which made it feel unearned, and then later the whole 'fear is your companion' thing which pushed it. Why did it feel unearned? At the time she had only been on the show for half a season + her other shelve cameos, when in comparison, every other companion since the reboot had a whole season before their (lesser) 'big moment'.

    Clara wasn’t a character. That’s why people hated her, her personality was whatever she needed to be at the time for the writer, she was funny only when the writer clearly felt it had been too long since there was a joke, she was defiant and clever only when the writer needed her to be to finish the episode’s story etc. Doctor Who should be a character based show, it should be a show where you have great, well fleshed out entertaining characters and then storylines of the episodes should be based around fleshing out those characters, look at Buffy The Vampire Slayer, perfect example, a show where almost every episode is centred around showing the audience what awesome characters they have, the storylines themselves aren’t important because they don’t have to be, you’ll find yourself enjoying an episode just as much whether the characters are fighting monsters or sitting in a living room doing nothing just because of how wonderfully crafted and detailed the characters are. Clara’s era in the show was not a character based run, her entire character was centred around a storyline with zero payoffs, zero proper explanation and zero build up, she was there to flesh out a story, and a severely underwhelming story at that. Out of all the companions DW has had, Clara is the only one that stands out as boring. Whatever people say about Rose, Amy, Donna, etc, they were fleshed our characters, put Rose and Donna in a room with any monster you like, the dialogue writes itself, you know exactly how they’d react, meanwhile put Clara in a room with a particular monster, how would she react? She could react in any way you want her to because she doesn’t have a proper fleshed out personality. It’s a true shame. Hopefully under Chibnall we can return to episodes/seasons that are there to make us love characters again, not just use them as a ploy to tell a story, using characters as a ploy to tell a story is how a one off serious drama show should be developed, not a show like Doctor Who which should be a show where you’re taken on a journey every week with characters you love to spend time with and look forward to seeing again and worry about when something happens to them and laugh when something insane happens to them and cry when something sad happens, that’s what the show should be, not like how the show was with Clara as the companion.

      +Tasorius Wow, your comment really proves you're no better than the haters. Yeah, let's completely ignore everyone's personal agency and right to decide for themselves what they like and don't like because of the term "mary sue".
      Clara was a huge mary sue, that's undeniable. I didn't personally hate her, but I can understand why people wouldn't feel invested in such a character. Clara was basically a self insert of Moffat.
      In case you still don't understand why, the reason she is a mary sue is because she's perfect. If you watch every episode with Clara you'll see that she can do nothing wrong. Hell, she's lecturing the Doctor on a daily basis. Then we find out that she's the solution to everything in the most half-assed, bullshit asspull of an explanation I've ever heard.
      These days Doctor Who is barely even Sci-fi anymore, it's just fiction. At it's worst, it's straight up fantasy. Guess that's what happens when you leave nerd culture to hack frauds for showrunners.

  • @Meggsie
    @Meggsie 6 років тому +55

    This is my thing with Moffat's big special characters. Ashildr, River Song, Clara... they're too last minute. Characters like that need to be planted early on and allowed significant time to grow, with lots of space in between. And there can't be loads of them because every time he makes a new one the others seem less special. Jack Harkness, I think he's an RTD/Moffat hybrid character, was the one done almost perfectly I'd say. When they actually introduce him, he's not even recognizable and while he gets a little featured the Face of Boe is totally subtle. Then they introduce him like any other companion and they let his character grow on the audience as per usual. Then, after leaving a little hint by showing him come alive again, they cut him off. But they don't do the, "we can never see each other again because of plot!" spiel, they just leave him and the audience just assumes that's his farewell. They go an entire season without him, except for a bit when he's unrecognizable. No fireworks, no mention, he just fades. Almost another entire season goes by before we finally see the Jack we recognize, and his return makes complete sense because the writers planned it. This is so clever because now Jack is nostalgic, and it's so fun to see how Jack interacts with the Doctor's new companion. The concept that Jack is immortal is explained, but it's not the center of the Doctor's world. In fact, he doesn't really like to be around him because Jack is just 'wrong.' You aren't distracted by the writers fawning over their creation, they just sit back and let the fans do the squealing. We get the arc to his plot polished off and it's a total, "holy shit" entrance for the Master. Now anytime they bring him back, he's a welcomed visitor that makes total sense. In fact, I'm sure they could bring him back for a whole season and it would flow quite naturally. Clara, while it's so hard to dislike her because of her actress... is too forced and has an inconsistent personality. Clara would be successful if they stretched her out for several seasons. Just a character that seemed to pop up and die and slowly let the Doctor realize that it's the same person sacrificing herself for him over and over and over again. Imagine if they started her as early as nine, replace her with the sweet girl in the Big House. That would make the jumping into the time stream a fantastic topper to a large character. And then yes, you are totally right. She's a character that absolutely needs to die as her final farewell. The Doctor gets to travel with her once and for all, even for an extended time, only for her to do what she's always done... die saving him. Moffat has great character ideas... he just doesn't execute them well then repeats himself. You ever seen The Adventures of Tintin? If not you should, Moffat wrote the scene, "The door should have been locked" in this movie first, then simply rehashed it for the Doctor's 50th. I get so frustrated when I start to see that.

Just the lazy writing doesn’t have the males doing it in impossible situations. The first story is simply terrifying. Civilised people face with brutal stupidity. Even more dangerous is when the stupid become self aware and they blame the other for showing them up.

    I didn't hate Clara for the very same reason I didn't like her: she wasn't a character. She was a plot point in Season 7 and a mouthpiece for Moffat's clever dialogue in Season 8. By season 9 I'd all but given up any hope of figuring out who the hell she was meant to be.
    There was nothing there to feel anything for one way or another. That's why I reacted so badly to Steven's insistence that I should, nay, MUST care about her.
    The importance that he placed on her wasn't earned. She was terribly thinly sketched and the sketching that was there changed too often to be believed.
    I knew who Rose was. I knew who Martha was. I knew who Donna was, and Amy and Rory and Bill.
    But Clara was a cypher who was put on a pedestal she never deserved. I always resented that.

    • @mykomatos5445
      @mykomatos5445 6 років тому +12

      That is how I felt about her, only during seasons 7 and 8. On the opposite, I actually started to like her in season 9, before that I found her to be an empty poster-girl just posing around, but in season 9 she showed to be more subtle. Her manipulative way (though with good intentions most of the time), her ego, her consciousness of responsibility, her stoicism... Good or bad, those traits made her an actual character, even if it's harder to notice than Donna's simple awesomeness.
      But maybe the fact that I stopped watching a couple of years after s8 helped me get in s9 with a fresh view about her, perhaps I simply don't remember the inconsistencies you're talking about. Taken separately, s9's Clara is interesting in my humble opinion.
      Anyway, not my favourite character, but I'll remember her way better than Rose.

Then she was a flirty kid with Matt Smith...and not a convincing one. Then she was randomly a teacher with a boyfriend out of nowhere. She had no purpose, reason or motive...and then like every companion she has some backstory that makes her better than a time lord. It was a different independent character she was playing every week

      Amen, Tim. I really loved the possibilities of Clara and really enjoyed the dynamic between her and Capaldi. When the Doctor changed she had the same challenge that Rose did when her Doctor change. But even more so because she was no longer in love with him in that way. Yet they formed a fantastic bond that went beyond that romance. That was such a wonderful and in some respects fresh take on it all.
      The problem I felt was this whole "Impossible Girl" thing. She became not a character, but a device to further Moffat's dicey storytelling.
      My biggest problems with the series since Moffat has taken over is this need to play games with the arc. Why can't we just have a series where they just go on adventures? Why does there always have to be some ulterior thing going on? Clara and Capaldi's Doctor would have been perfect for that, but they had to toss in Missy (a character I really dislike almost as much as River Song) and make this whole thing.
      I miss the classic Who's when they just traveled through space and time and enjoyed the thrill. I think that's one reason I loved the Donna series so much. Even though there was an arc there, it still felt like to companions taking a trip through time and space together. The Doctor showing his latest companion all the cool things out there in the universe. I think the production company has forgotten that the companion is essentially a stand in for the audience. And we need someone to relate to.
      They never allowed Clara that chance. And that's unfortunate. But then I don't think Capaldi had much of a chance to shine in the role as I think he could have. It was especially fun the closer we saw him get to (Capaldi's) punk roots.But nope...close but no cigar. What could have been. What ultimately was wasted.

    I did not care for her run with Matt Smith because she was strictly a plot device. Yes, I agree during the rest of her run she was often given too much impossible power over the universe. I also agree with what someone said about her being a bit lost in space (no pun intended) since she, like many of Moffat's companions, did not have much of anything keeping her tied to Earth. However, what truly redeemed her for me and gave her a special place in my heart was her amazing friendship with Capaldi's doctor. Despite Moffat's often convoluted writing, the dialogue and actions between Clara and the Doctor were pure love. Ex, "When do I not see you?" and "Do you really think I care for you so little that betraying me would make a difference?" Among others. Though more outside character development would've been nice, their bond is what made me love Clara.

    Jenna Coleman is very attractive & a good actress, but the character of Clara Oswald was sooo unbalanced in the show as to ruin any enjoyment, Clara took over the show to the point where it literally became "The Clara Oswald" show and she was sooo smug with it as well. The Doctor was practically relegated to the "chorus line" playing second fiddle.
    The program is primarily about the Doctor and all other characters are secondary and basically cannon fodder. Companions are changed on a regular basis and NEVER become lead characters. Their primary purpose is to be assistants to the Doctor like Jo Grant etc, even Romana; a Time Lord herself; never did that to the Doctor.

      For me personally, the first 2 introductions of the Oswald character were better written and likeable. The Clara that the audience was "stuck" with was naggy, selfish and used for the BS "the girl who saved the doctor" storyline. I thought that for someone who supposedly knew so much about the Doctor; because she went through his timeline; and was the reason he got a reboot with his regeneration cycle, how she initially treated Capaldi's Doctor was deplorable. Smith's Doctor was dying of old age literally, he knew it was his last life and she told the timelords to save him. To then abandon him was terrible, and any respect I had for the character went away. I personally liked Danny Pink, I hated his death and loved the last Christmas exchange they had together. I think Moffat wasted TWO character redeeming deaths for Clara that ultimately cheapens her overall character.

    The best companions have always been the ones that outgrow the Doctor. Rose became a capable leader, but she backslid into an obsessed fangirl. Martha, Mickey, Jack, Donna, Amy, Rory and Bill all grew into better versions of themselves. Donna's tragedy is that she lost all of it. But Clara didn't grow..she became worse over time. Worse than that, she was forced on us as "the Impossible Girl", the one who saves the Doctor throughout his timeline...the MOST IMPORTANT COMPANION EVER....that title has to be earned, not given.

    At the beginning, I loved Clara's character and the mystery that surrounded her, but after that, and after Matt Smith left the show, I felt her character was disintegrating. Not only did she react poorly to the Doctor's regeneration (after stopping and/or witnessing several of them) it was completely off base for her to react how she did. Eventually she pulled herself together, but she ends up having a very tough time with the 'new Doctor' throughout the rest of her time on the show. The second thing I had an issue with, was how overcomplicated she made things. The whole mess with her boyfriend (and for the life of me I can't remember his name) just turned her into an overemotional and over-manipulative character in my mind. Everything would have been much simpler if she had just OPENED HER MOUTH AND ASKED. To me, after that her character just went downhill and she turned into a person I SERIOUSLY didn't like.

      I never understood why she was so upset by Smith becoming Capaldi! She literally went through his entire timeline and saw that he regenerates at death, over and over. She saved each one of his past selves. WHY was she so angry and mean and upset about a new Doctor? It never made sense. She shouldn't have even been surprised, let alone upset and refusing to accept him as The Doctor.

    • @sarahhiggins1515

      She had a problem with the regeneration because it was *her* doctor. The others were all past faces. Her best friend just changed and she has to get to know him again because he *is* different. It only takes her one episode to accept him and then the rest of series 8 is getting to know him again. Series 9 she doesn't have a tough time with him at all. She loves him and they have a very deep bond. He becomes *her* doctor again.
      Her relationship with Danny was definitely poorly written though and added nothing to the show and made very little sense, although it did show some flaws to her character which is a counter argument for everyone calling her a Mary Sue. She wasnt the perfect character at all and neither did she have no character. She was controlling and manipulative, but also compassionate, brave and intelligent.

And then people liked the comedy aspect of Donna and the family and connections of Rose and Martha but in all honesty it was obvious that Clara was supposed to be different. Also what I don’t understand about the hate is that people keep contradicting themselves like when saying “she was bossy and manipulative” but then saying “she had no personality and was boring”??? What I didn't like about Clara was the unnecessary lying. There was no need to lie to the Doctor about Danny or to Danny about the Doctor. Different things could have been done to create a story where Danny and the Doctor didn't see eye to eye without sacrificing her integrity. It became part of her personality, so much that she even wrote it down in post-it notes to confess to Danny about. Like he didn't know she lied all the time?

  • @defiante1
    @defiante1 6 років тому +44

    My problem with Clara was she was the only companion that was repeatedly given a free pass to be a bad person. She does several things that would of gotten past companions kicked off. A prime example is the Beast Below where the Doctor is ready to throw Amy back to where he found her but she redeems herself. The final straw with Clara for me was when she demanded that the Master/Missy be killed and if the Doctor wasn't going to do it she would. The one rule the Doctor follows is he doesn't kill and his companions don't cold blood kill like that. Imagine Amy doing that? Or Rose? Or any of them and the Doctor just being *shrug* essentially. Also no one refers to someone by their full name. "Danny Pink is dead!" Just say Danny. Seriously. No one is going to get confused about who you mean.
    Also Danny Pink just seemed like a poor mans Rory, this badass but emotionally sensitive guy. The amount of time he spends crying and so on is... excessive for what is supposed to be an emotional but generally uplifting show.

      Raf Rafi I love both because despite popular belief, Hell Bent didn't ruin Heaven Sent in the slightest. Heaven sent was about overcoming the despair which grief can thrust you into, while Hell Bent shows how pain can warp your character. The Doctor throughout the episode was symbolically gripping onto the "memory" of Clara and it explored his God complex in trying to save her while simultaneously juggling the effect of the Time War on the Doctor's reputation. It resolved all of these in a very neat manner while still allowing for some incredibly poignant scenes from Clara and Twelve while undoing the frankly stupid and demeaning death of Face the Raven in favour of an aspirational message which doesn't insult the core ideals of the show as a whole.

    I was never a fan of Clara. I thought she was really interesting that she kept popping up and dying in the doctor's life, but when she became a fully-fledged companion, I wasn't a fan. I don't know why. I understand why people might like her, but I found her very smug and almost arrogant. I didn't feel an emotional connection with her and her dying loved ones (mother, Danny). When her explanation of how she's the Impossible Girl was revealed, I thought it was bullshit and... lazy? Some might argue and say that it was brilliant, to which i respond that i'm glad that grabs you more than it does me.
    I want to like Clara, and i did for a little bit. But then Peter Capaldi came along and she just drove me mad. I couldn't handle her, I wanted to punch her in the face and I begged for Danny to just fucking leave her on their first date.

    yeah, the reasons that I and others I know 'hate' clara oswald are different. Me and my friends believe she was over used and then took over the series. This would have been fine if she was interesting, but she was so wonderbread. I mean I could take some of the whole chance of having multiples of her running around since she did throw herself into the doctor's 'corpse'? When she did that to stop the greater intelligent, she might have been weaker but the thought of having copies of herself running around helping the doctor as best they can was awesome. But it failed because they said she would die if she did that. She however lived. Upon her return from the doctor's corpse she lost everything that made her interesting. And got a giant ego on top of that. She could have been more impactful, but became nothing.

      Yeah the smugness got very irritating. I understand keeping her around to see her deal with the change of doctors, as the only person to do that in the revived series was Rose, but this was basically an updated version and somewhat realistic aspect of what peri went through when Davison became Colin Baker. But then they just piled on the smugness to the point of her just being insufferable.

She was given such fantastic character development and yes I agree, hellbent throws things out of the water a little bit but we forget it’s Dr Who, it’s meant to question reality! For me, Moffat and Coleman were fantastic additions to the show and despite the execution of Hellbent and the whole Gallifrey thing in general, I cannot wait for an episode that see’s Clara return!

    Clara had an agency problem and ended up being the tropiest Moffat mish-mash we've seen in a female character in Doctor Who. The two characters she admired the most constantly battled for control over her life and instead of putting both Danny and the Doctor in their respective places, she would lie, placate and avoid addressing their unwelcome and specious opinions of the other's presence in her life. It gets so bad it almost ends up becoming like Stockholm Syndrome, with the Doctor never truly apologizing for his meddling and Danny's shittiness 'exonerated' by his martyrdom. Clara herself isn't the problem, but the contrivances around her character beautifully articulated why it was Moffat's time to go.

    You echoed everything I thought for Clara Oswald. I also thought that compared to the other companions, the writers didn't really give her much warmth or family dynamic compared with what we saw for the other companions (Rose with her mom, Martha with her family, Donna with her parents, Amy and Rory with Rory's dad...not to mention River). It could be that they made a conscious choice to echo the Doctor and how alone he is at times but I think that was such a disservice to her character. It only allowed her to echo the Doctor at times and towards the end I really had to ask myself: Do I really know who Clara Oswald is outside of her relationship with the Doctor? And the answer sadly is no. Not really. And I agree with Danny Pink. There was something off about his character and I totally did not see that relationship working. It really sucks because Jenna Coleman is a fantastic actress. Too bad the character and the character building was written so poorly.

    • @irrevenant3

      IMO, the lack of warmth (at least in her later seasons) was kind of the point. In her first season or so they might as well not have written out Amy, personality-wise. In later seasons Clara did become more controlling and arrogant and reckless and Doctor-like and to me, that was interesting. I agree with Crispy - it was a 'flew too close to the sun' story and it rang true for me.
      I totally agree that her relationship with Danny Pink was completely unconvincing (hint: If you want to convince us that a couple are deeply in love, maybe don't have them arguing every second they're on screen together?).

    • @Tharus12
      @Tharus12 6 років тому

      I agree that she was poorly used as a character. nothing against her as a companion but like others have said , I feel that she would have been a more interesting character if we had stuck with the Victorian version and the two were the echos. for me my favourite episode from Capaldi's first series was the Mummy on the Orient Express. The Doctor had to do most of the problem solving as Clara had been separated from him.
      Oddly for me the reason she was an okay companion and nothing special was that we'd had five companions previously all from present day earth. Also the focus of the show became too much of the companions home life on earth and not about their adventures with the Doctor. I would like to see some return to the classic formula where the character development of the companion happens whilst in the Tardis and the situations they are put in.

  • @thelittlehobbit4698
    @thelittlehobbit4698 6 років тому +164

    What makes me mad about Clara is Moffat trying again and again to put down my throat how much she is special. How much the Doctor loves her. How much the universe would be nothing without her. You know, I didn't need that with Rose, I didn't need that with Donna, I didn't need that with Amy and Rory, I loved them. It was natural. But the show are taking what the other companions had of special and putting everything in Clara. Just like when the Doctor regenerates. Her talk was just like Rose when 9 turns to 10. Or the sassy personality of Donna. Or the warrior soul of Martha. Moffat put so much effort to make us love her that it have the opposite effect, at least with me. "I was born to save the Doctor." Yeah, just like Jenny, Rose, Donna, Martha, Sarah Jane, River, Jack Harkness. It's just too much for me, it becomes annoying.

    • @wanderlingd7047
      @wanderlingd7047 6 років тому +2

      I agree but it's ok they have changed it so many times before I'm sure eventually the changes and Clara's importance will someday be changed again. If you really think about it Rose was a freaking time goddess at one point who's to say all of this isn't just BadWolf's doing by manipulating things, it is possible (far fetched I know but i'm looking for ways to minimize Clara). Theoretically everything after the BadWolf incident could possibly be traced to her and caused by her manipulations that we aren't aware of yet and the Dr is still feeling the ripple effect caused by BadWolf when she merged with the Tardis. After all she could change things with a thought. (not a rose lover though I didn't hate her I'm just throwing this out there. ) That story line could come back later on.

They use other characters' dialogue to tell how special and amazing so-and-so is without showing anything to the audience to support the supposed three-dimensional awesomeness.

      In my opinion t's exactly the other way around. Thats exactly what happened with the Doctor in the earlier seasons. Rose and Martha only existed to tell other characters how amazing the Doctor was. "Don't worry, the Doctor will save us! The Doctor is the cleverest, most amazing man!" Especially Martha didn't have any personality traits other than her crush on the Doctor.
      I actually liked Clara because she wasn't that way, she was actually capable of resolving situations herself. We SEE her being awesome, or at least trying to be. In the end it kills her, but thats pretty consistent with her story arch, all things considered.

    I have absolutely nothing against Jenna Coleman, but I really hated Clara. She was so unrelatable as a companion in so many ways. In fact; at some points it felt as if she wasn't even a companion. - It was the Clara show. She was portrayed as smarter and braver than the Doctor which I think takes away from the realism of the character. I honestly couldn't wait until they got new companions. Besides River Song, she is the companion that got on my nerves the most.

    Honestly Clara is probably one of my favourite companions because of how much initiative she took it was really good to see a companion who was not as intelligent as the doctor it’s not really possible but somebody who could match him and wits and cleverness and also she would help out on her own accord it wouldn’t just be a thing of the doctor telling her what to do she would find other possible solutions to problems or smaller ways to help out and also she was very good at being what a lot of the companions are at the same time which is a grounding force for him to keep him I want to say in check. Like how Donna stopped him from just killing himself along with the spider queen.

    That bullshit with the leaf got me sooo fucking mad. Clara is not and will never be as amazing or as smart or have as much pain as the Doctor has had. The fact that her goddamn *leaf* fed the sun God instead of the doctor's literal knowledge of the WHOLE GODDAMN UNIVERSE is just a slap in the face. I get that the whole point was that she was at the center of the doctor's life, but that whole idea was really annoying as well. Her importance was played up way too high and her actual character was way too mundane to deserve the spot as 'the most important girl' in the universe.

    • @rmsgrey
      @rmsgrey 6 років тому +4

      The point there wasn't leaf vs 1200 years of wandering around the universe; it was actual history vs unrealised potential - what overfed Akhaten was all the possibilities the leaf represented - the lives Clara's mother could have lived.
