- The Minecraft Survival Guide Season 3 continues in Minecraft 1.20.4!
In this tutorial, we build paths around the starter base area.
So far we've built a couple of houses, a large storage room, and a factory - but without paths, these builds seem plonked down in arbitrary places without anything connecting them. Even if you spend most of your time flying with Elytra, paths can help your builds feel much more deliberate!
I explain how to choose materials based on your build theme, when to build staircases, and when to terraform your terrain for a more shallow slope. We discuss techniques for texturing a path, lighting that matches your theme, and how sight lines can make a huge difference in indicating which areas of your build can be explored on foot.

I like Pix's building too. He did build the paths and the terrain around the paths this episode, also explaining the importance of the paths for future builds. The paths help him envision where and how his next "build" will be place in the world. You can't skip this step and expect the same results. The paths may not be as exciting as a building, but they make the buildings so much more cohesive, everything together as a complete build or village. I think this is a good and needed episode.

The build theory videos are always a favorite of mine! Building in Minecraft is one of the things I’m working on right now as sometimes I feel my worlds becoming too lifeless and builds really help with that.
Another beautiful mix of the micro and macro advice - from the chess knight's trick for palette-placing, to the broad strokes about conceptualizing what kind of transports would be using the roads.
All the retaining walls I’ve built and I never once thought of rounding them off.
I find my own desire pathways between established areas/buildings by gradually adding torches along where I walk the most (especially during pre-elytra game play). I don't rush to put in pathways right away so I can get a strong sense of where its most convenient for me to travel around, and I end up building paths I use most of the time - although I can get away with this approach in a single player world a little easier than others. Love the build theory episode, happy holidays Pix!

I use black and white concrete for my paths, because I'm older, and I get real Hotwheels race track vibes when I do it. Very satisfying. 🙂
The bending pathway solution is something that totally opened my mind! I just constructed a small fishing house with some crops beside a kelp farm. There is some infrastructure, like cartwheels and wagons, to move away the farms output, and even domesticated a donkey that was wandering around. But the only way to get to the shore right now is a humongous inclined mud brick staircase! I will try the bending upward road method.
I love how Pix refers to his own house as "this person's house".

My stepson and I have a realm together and we built our roads out copper, prismarine and dark prismarine with a quartz slab sidewalk... just to flex how rich we are. Our buildings are made of quartz, calcite and deepslate... including the entire mob farm and the whole thing ties together so well! Looks like Olympus on top of the mountain. Love what paths add to a build.
Where you at pix? I love the whole series. Found you somewhere in season 2 and watched all those. Was super bummed when they stopped but got crazy excited when you started up S3. Been watching those as they come out and between episodes I’m going back and watching S1. It’s so cool and interesting to see how your gameplay has evolved with the different updates. Hope all is well and that you can keep this going for a long time!!
i tend to make the top of my lamp posts all wood, but with a gate between so it comes out a bit more and gives a bit more detail on the "beam"

I have watched this episode 2 times now (yes I know it came out today), but it's sooooo good! Even just the small point of the direction of the block helping the pathways (insert head blowing up gif guy here). It's awesome! I loved your thoughts on the terrain can hide features and tying it in with video games design (you mentioned it also while building the Empires 2 build) using the walls and terrain to direct the players eyes. Didn't think I'd be watching a 32 minute video about paths but here I am!
I can’t believe I’m finally caught up. Started watching the new Survival Guide just about a month ago and it’s taught me SO MUCH! Thank you for all your hard work. ❤
I'm watching your video, and when I get to the bit about your retaining wall, it reminds me of another game I play, one in which such walls feature prominently. It's a more modern city setting, but there are straight flat walls of concrete all over. Most of them several stories tall. And since this *is* a city, the citizens may need to get up and down these monumental walls, so dotted along them are these switchback staircases that go the full way up. Like a cement fire escape.
I'm thinking something similar could be used on your stone brick wall, even though you don't need to turn it back, just a couple of brick stairs turned sideways against the wall would help with getting around, at least in concept if not in reality. (no one really uses those cement fire escapes in the other game, either)
Yeah, definitely something I'd consider adding in once the area is a bit more built up. A good way of keeping the flow of the area going :)
What a coincidence that todays episode is about pathways!
Just yesterday I began to renovate a very old dirt path from 2020 when I started the world with a friend.
(The world is 4400 in game days old)
Now it's rather close to the city centre where my giant, nearly not finished, castle stands. I used cobblestone, mossy cobblestone, stone bricks, mossy stone bricks, tuff, moss and andersite and it looks really nice!
And I now also have a pathway that leads to my sniffer farm and the area that I started to transform into more of an agrarian part of the city.
I always use your tip of using the knight’s move when I’m making paths with gradients!
That factory with all the smoking chimneys doesn't strike me as too modern for a medieval build. Maybe the chimneys might be a little odd, but you have to tan your leather and forge your metal somewhere. And it would be kind of cool if someone came up with the idea of a chimney or smoke hole being used to carry the smells away from the settlement, assuming they worked out how to use dampers or valves to work with the outside air to draw such smells away.
Came out at the perfect time, I’m now considering pathways for my town. Never realized how important they could be in determining where builds will go!
I live in the flattest country on earth, so building retaining walls isn't something that comes naturally to me. I recently did a 1.5 block one to separate a small back area for a workshop from the road passing by it, and it really pulled things together and it's a good indicator that it's something you're not supposed to walk up.
And when it comes to paths up hills, something I like to do is 0.5 up, 3 over. So 3 slabs, 3 full blocks, 3 slabs, etc. It gives the perfect smooth slope, while just 2 over gives a 25% slope, which doesn't sound like much but is actually really steep IRL.
And I agree with Pix that in a lot of situations, these switchback roads are very realistic, though you might want to consider giving yourself a little shortcut so you don't have to take the long way round.
Finally caught up! Got halfway through season 2 then life got in the way. Started on S3 recently and as always - I throughly enjoy your take on MC coupled with the British flavored commentary 😉 I appreciate your attention to builds/farms that won’t directly work in bedrock as that’s the version I use. Many thanks for the time and effort you put into the survival guide series and I look forward to seeing more🎄

I love making pathways but i always had trouble with hills and retaining walls. This helped so much! I can't wait to open my game and adjust my paths😌
The trick to hills and retaining walls is to do what comes naturally. I always form a vision in my mind first when I look around where I'm building and picture something you could add to decorate your paths and roads with like custom trees, man made waterfalls w/ponds. Etc. Etc. Plus I watch ALOT GoodlTimeswithScar, and MythicalSausage videos that helps too. 😊😊 I hope this advice is helpful.
I love this. My latest build is around a cliffside savanna village witch spills onto a plains island. I loved creating paths between my structures and the natural village buildings.
I have used a mixture of cobblestone Amesite and patches of gravel with rooted dirt on dirt walls.

Honestly, 1st season of survival guide was marvellous! I often miss watching this series, it was such a revelation to me, this calm and intelligent voice, step-by-step tutorials for basically anything, lots of technical or less known information about the game, even though i've played minecraft for ages, there was still some gimmicks I didn't know! Ever since I first saw your videos from recomendations, i was hooked. I remember my first video was episode 50 or so, when I accidently spoiled myself your progress, but it was fun watching from the first episode when i already know how your base will look like 😂 Now, videos starting to be less intertaining to watch, i was so sad that you ended season 2 so soon and didn't finish the museum. I don't know what happened over the years, maybe you like streaming more, or i just grown out of it. The quality of the videos is top-notch, no complaints, but maybe the storytelling is missing something... I don't know, I just don't feel that much excitement anymore. Sorry if my words were harsh, I didn't mean to offend you, that's just how i feel and what i see, even the drop in views shows that. But still i like your calm voice and i will always cherish your narration

I love this man teaching viewers giving tips
When I want to lay down a pathway to all my structures usually I shape it out first and try to make it look natural as possible like its built within the terrain. Than I pick 4 different blocks I want to use to decorate my paths with. Like for example. potzel, mud, mangrove planks, and coarse dirt. Especially in a environment that best suits the pallet I'm using.

when building paths in Minecraft even if I don't want them just to make the path smoother when walking or riding a horse I use the stair blocks over slabs on the main paths since I place them for land speed while looking good and can guide to important locations when I have flight after going for shalker boxes later on. I think starting roads and walkways is the hardest part as you only really have where you've run to the most to go off of and you'll have to think up "what about later on in the future?" even just a bit so you aren't tearing up a months work to add something.

I hope in some episodes you'll cover tree-building, because to me it was always the hardest thing to build. My oak trees are either too geometrical (i.e. perfect ellipsoidal crone) or too thin. Both the spruce and palm trees are unnatural and look bare. And even little decorative sidewalk trees look out of place. And there arent many guides on how to *learn* to build them, only block-by-block tutorials or vague descriptions of the process
I use the carriage mod, so paths are a must for me, to the point where all the bases i make are even ground across the map. If one starts at +10 and the road ends up floating, that's where the base is made.
I edited nether portal on the side if the mountain, as well as a village on the other side of the snowy hill behind your home.

"no steep slopes", meanwhile, in quebec... having steep slopes (id say around 30 ish degrees) with a stop sign at the top of it so when its icy you just get stuck- or just steep slopes making it hard to walk up (having a bench in the middle of the hill for people who need a break). I can think of like- 5 places in my hometown that have roads like this XD

I think you don't use your own paths, because humans don't tend to walk straight, then turning 90* and moving further. People try to cut corners whenever it is possible and naturally create triangle-shaped intersections rather than T-shaped. You just showed yourself it at 31:08.
So, the better way to add roads is to check where it is more comfortable for you to place them and then decorate/refine dirt paths with "artificial" materials. This method is called Desire Paths and was used numerous times IRL. One example is Ohio State University in 1911, where the pavement was built over the natural paths the students themselves trampled between the university buildings.
You can also combine "urban formal" 90* turn roads with small dirt paths, implying that people there cut corners often and trampled their own paths which might be unusable for horses, carts or other vehicles.
1:34 This is true in older versions of Minecraft. Now, you can’t turn anything into grass path. Anywhere there are *dirt-like blocks including grass* you can turn them into dirt paths. Much easier in places that aren’t grass all over to start.

In that empty space you should set up a fountain maybe, possibly even a nod to your empires s2 emerald fountain or to the Vigil of Pixandria from s1 empires. Vigil might feel out of place thematically I guess

I look at walk ways as (have I walked through this place multiple times) and plan the road from there. I don’t use elitra in my worlds. So I usually use cobblestone, stone and stone brick as a walkway. Though I did use deepslate in roads recently. And I think it stands out to much. Mite need to change it.

Why are there no timelapses in these videos,I remember you doing extensive timelapses in the 1st survival guide series.
Two major reasons:
1) My standards for time lapses have crept up a little now I'm more familiar with Replay Mod, but often the latest versions of Replay Mod are only available to people who support them on Patreon. I also update to new minor versions of Minecraft immediately, which mod creators can't always keep up with, so switching to 1.20.4 would have left me unable to use Replay Mod until they published a new version.
2) I publish this series in 4k. Since Replay Mod doesn't natively support hardware encoding, rendering footage in 4k takes AGES. A 3 minute time lapse segment could add an hour or more to render, which increases production time on an episode, slowing down my output overall.
The series will still feature some time lapses in future, especially for larger projects, but they aren't a huge priority right now.
@Pixlriffs I have a building idea! How about "Yggdrasil the World Tree" on top of the mountain or branching from a hole in the mountain?
Please do some work on interiors. It's the only thing letting the base down and we could use the inspiration haha

I want to record on Minecraft, but the mods that like like to use, Litematica, Replay Mod, Optical Zoom, etc, have not been updated yet.
Can you talk about how you handle your mods when a new installation comes out? Simple, like 1.20.2 to 1.20.4
Simple: I don't use mods.
If you want to always use the latest version of Minecraft, you cannot rely on mods always being available.
Some mods are updated quickly after a new release - Sodium is pretty good at this - but some will not be available for a while, especially if the update changes something about how they work.
Assuming your mods don't add any actual gameplay content, though, it's usually possible to just continue playing through your world in the latest vanilla version of Minecraft.

Adding infrastructure is the most gratifying thing in minecraft.
But thats just a theory. A BUILD theory!
Attention New Player (Important)
After you've made your first portal, it is safest to build new portals FROM the Nether. Unless of course you're 100% sure you know where it will spawn safely.
Why? Because you can't see as you travel between portals, until you step out of it. This is important to know because portals made in the Overworld may spawn Nether portals right over oceans of lava.
I learned the lava lesson the hard way, when I built a portal in a village base and immediately fell about 100 blocks into a lava ocean. To make matters worse, When I re-entered to build around it, I accidently pushed one of my free roaming traders into the lava. At this time I did not know villagers and animals will travel between portals as well. Needless to say, I immediately built safety walls and gates around the portals on both ends.
my paths look weird, they dont have the dark parts on the outside of the path like vanilla minecraft, ik its something i maybe changed in my optifine but idk what bc connected textures isnt it
Are you using 'old lighting'? Some UA-cam folks I know use/have used it (like Mumbo, Grian, and Iskall) but it removes a lot of the shadows from the game, so that might be why
