When grandpa says “ Don’t forget your way home son” it broke my heart. Watching this series as a kid and later as a parent are truly two unique experiences.
That line "Don't' forget your way home son" went thru my mind when I started each project after The Waltons - it said to me, "Never forget your experience on the show and try to make it ring true on each new film you produce."
This comment will run long, but working on The Achievement was indeed truly special for me, for all of us - and Brenda Lee re: your comment about crying, well you're not alone as there wasn't a dry eye on the set, and in the final two-shot on the front porch with Richard and Ralph when the tears (real tears) came to Richard, and overwhelmed with emotion he had to exit frame...that was an on-set moment that all of us lucky enough to have been there on that late Friday night shall never forget. The episode was also significant and very, very special for me as our Director Harry Harris had just sponsored me into the Directors Guild, and in addition, asked me to stay by his side for the entirety of the shoot - unusual as I spent a good deal of my time at my roll-around desk on Stage 26 doing paperwork (no laptops, it was all pencil, and paper in those days). Other than watching dailies at lunch (in black and white) today (47 years later) is the first time I've sat down to watch the episode all the way through (I worked late every night and never could get home to watch the show on Thursdays at 8pm) - and it's quite wonderful - and that's me billed as "The Mail Boy" in a couple of scenes - last-minute fixes as Harry did not want John-Boy to make 'cold-entrances' - and in a hurried need asked me to step in - and was back at my desk 15 minutes later. Would you believe I still get checks for those last-minute fixes? Thank you, Harry Harris. The Achievement was shot on a 7-day schedule and boy did we move fast to get it done - so fast that the afternoon we shot the Dance Hall sequences with John-Boy and Daisy I mistakenly dismissed the Extras (Dancers) early. In a rush, I sent them home without double-checking with Harry, and he had several more set-ups planned!! When I told Harry what I'd done he calmly lit a cigarette, settled into his Director's Chair, and said, " make it work." What to do??? My solution: 2nd AD Joe Florence, First AD Ralph Ferrin, Mary Beth McDonough's brother John (the tallest guy you see in the b.g.) all threw on Sport Coats and became "Dancers". Of the many memories I specifically recall remarking to Harry how impressed I was with Kami's work (she carried the major sub-plot) and he agreed - take a look at the scene where John-Boy gives Elizabeth the "Jessica Girl Spy" book and tells Elizabeth that her heroine, the author, has died - Kami says, "John-Boy I don't want to cry, but I feel as if I've lost someone special" - wow! I thnik that performances by everyone in this episode were exceptional - wonderful Deirdre Lenihan as "Daisy", Bettye Ackerman as "The Publisher" (a treat for us all when she brought her husband actor Sam (Gunga Din) Jaffe to the set with her), and wonderful Joan Tompkins who played "Mrs. Herbert" the kind and sympathetic mother of the "Jessica Girl Spy" author" - her scene with Richard is a lesson in acting (as Spencer Tracy would say "That's truth, not acting") Other special moments for me on-set: when John-Boy is told he might have to wait six months to hear about his book John-Boy, "That's barbaric!!" beautiful! (Every writer will get a laugh out of that) or when Michael says, "I do vow" (straight out of Earl's mouth) or when Grandma says "I've kept those memories, and now they're mellow in my mind and I'm ready to tell them again" - pure Earl! And, in the same scene Richard ends it with "Grandma I cherish you" it melted my heart right there on the stage. And Judy, your announcement "I'm pregnant..." and the reaction by all, wonderful and spontaneous - and when Will says, "...they'll call him Zebulon Junior" that was another "Will Ad-Lib" that made it to the screen, my gosh how we all still miss him! We had fun on this episode, but deep down, we all knew this was Richard's last, our last chance to be with him - and I believe it showed on all our faces. In my own mind, the show just was never the same without Richard...and I believe Richard believes the same, oh if he only had stayed - but his 5-year contract was over, he was young, talented, a gifted warm-hearted and fabulously fun guy who had the world on a string and had what would prove to be an amazing future ahead of him as a father, family man, and an extraordinary actor. To wrap this up (if you got this far) I wish to again say that my life and career was profoundly affected by the privilege of working on the show, and with cast and crew who became life-long friends.

Hi Judy and Everyone here... It is now another NEW YEAR 2022!! Richard Thomas has to come by and say HAPPY NEW YEAR OR HAPPY ADEQUATE NEW YEAR to us again :*)) What a precious moment in time to see the impeccable Richard Thomas aka John Boy Walton today! well, in 2022 :*)) Best to all.. *** I absolutely love watching your show Judy. If anything makes me sad, this show, your comforting narrating and authentically kind voice makes that sadness so much lighter Thank you. **** Goodnight Judy, Goodnight ALL
I wished Richard Thomas would've stuck around I really liked Richard Thomas acting as John Boy he owned that role was such a natural at playing John Boy sad this was his last episode
Richard Thomas is the one and only John Boy he was John Boy he was phenomenal at portraying John Boy that's how great of an actor Richard Thomas is he is one of the top actors in my opinion
The Waltons were one of the best memories of my childhood. The Waltons theme song always gives me the same feeling I had every Thursday night as a child. Thank you for making these videos. It's so comforting.
Mary Barton, I completely agree. The theme music almost never gets mentioned, but it's powerful and so evocative. It'll never be forgotten by us who were regular viewers. The trumpet ventures out, then it goes a little higher, and the third time it goes up and over the top of the sentiment. Unmistakably one of TV's top greatest series themes. Thanks for reminding us.
It wasn't the same without Richard Thomas. I don't think they should have brought John Boy back without him. I never thought I would see the day that Richard Thomas returned to Walton's Mountain and see him walk through the porch door of the Walton's home, but I'm glad he did. I grew fond of the other actor who played the second John Boy in my later years, but at the time I thought shouldn't have replaced Richard Thomas.
Richard Thomas will always be a link in my life to those days in the 70’s when we had quality tv to watch. I was the older sibling in my family and I connected to John Boy. I loved seeing him here. He still has that giggly, happy laugh. Keep this up please, Judy. It is so special. I wanted to be like you, especially when you went to the dance with that purse you bought. Even now, I can hear you say, “Ahhhh Grandma.” A reunion show would certainly be special. I’m Covid quarantined and I think I will go pull this episode out of my collection.....and cry again.
Yes, that episode is very tear inducing. John boy doesn't say right out that he is leaving, but all the adults lift their heads like they've picked up a scent on the wind. They can see he is saying goodbye.
The Walton theme song, I'll never forget it. I was so blessed to see Richard in a stage performance of Twelve Angry Men, it was excellent. Thank you for sharing behind the scenes Judy
I loved the flashbacks during The Homecoming, The typewriter, The Literary Man, The Burnout. I loved what Grandpa said, "Don't forget your way home, son". I felt grieved myself like other Walton fans that John Boy would leave the mountain. Even resentful, but grateful that John Boy was gonna do what he wanted to do. I admired Elizabeth reading Jessica Girl Spy books, not really nice of Jim Bob teasing her about it. Mary Ellen announcement about her pregnancy, I can hear Grandma, if she was around saying "GOOD LORD". The scene opens when John Boy is riding Blue to Ike's store and Ike gets so flustered with John Boy. After that episode, The Waltons will never be the same without Grandma and now John Boy.
I think after Richard's last episode the character of John Boy should have remained gone in my opinion until of course the reunion specials. It was a very sad episode.
Every time I mean every time I still choke up....& of course Grandpa breaks the silence when he asks are you ready for your firstborn to leave the nest? 😢😢😢😢😢
Allow me to add to this. When John boy said to his parents, I've been meaning to tell you. His mother got up and said, I better get started darning your socks. His Father said well son, guess it's your time. Just don't forget whare you came from. And as everybody started to say their good nights, Narrator, Earl Hammer narrated, those beautiful voices, and that home up on the mountain, the lazy mooing of the cow, the loud, lonely whistle of the train crossing the Tressel, always calls me home to Walton's Mountain. And as his narration stops, everybody finishes saying their good nights to each other, with a final goodnight to John Boy, as he also said, Goodnight everybody, I love you. You can see and feel the tears going down this cheeks as he departs and leaves for New York City.
I balled like a baby.John boy was leaving home and it was so sweet the discussion he has with his parents and Grandparents on the porch. The phone call at Godseys is so sweet.
That was such a moving episode. I’m impressed with how the whole show was put together. The ending of this was GREAT! Seeing Richard at the end was a real treat! Goodnight, Johnboy!! Mary
"The Achievement" was Richard Thomas' last regular appearance on this beloved show. But he would return to the series at the end of season 6, in "The Return (2 hrs.) and "The Revelation" (the next-to-last episode with Will Geer). Richard and Judy, I wish you both a very Happy New Year. Like you said, Richard, I'll gladly settle for a less-abnormal year than 2020 was. I'm with the belief that 2021 will see us at least progress back towards normal.
@@judynorton2598 Yeah good stuff there! Judy just wondering, was Grandma still with Ya during this Episode? I also though you did a great job on playing Mary Ellen thur the entire RUN!! :))
I was sad during this episode because John boy was leaving Richard Thomas did an incredible job at playing John boy. The best part about The waltons series all of them is they are so true to life real life situations. It puts a different perspective as to how we deal with things because The waltons were a true loving family thank you Judy so much for doing all of these 💕💕
I've always wanted to adopt Richard Thomas as my big brother. He's just so cool, so sweet and so talented. And so grounded. Love you, too, Judy! XOXOXOXXO
What a nice surprise to see Richard Thomas!! He is so sincere and down to earth, very refreshing! And thank you too Judy! Loving these videos! a bright spot in a somewhat dark year!
This is a very eventful episode and that tears at our heartstrings. Watching it again today, it struck me how amazing technology is that I can recall myself watching this 40 years ago in Montreal before I knew the full story about Earl Hamner, peering into the lives of people in Virginia (a place I have never been) and knowing that afterwards, I can instantly share my thoughts with Judy in sunny California about her portrayal of Mary Ellen, the compliments she got about her beautiful hair and her family's joy on the news of Mary Ellen's pregnancy. Across time and geography, it's always been ''The Spiritual Virginia'' that has bonded Waltons' fans together.
One of my favorite episodes of the Waltons is The JOURNEY, where John boy sacrifices a date with the girl of his dreams to escort an elderly woman on the last and most important journey of her life in a return trip to the sea. I understand that to be the only episode Earl Hamner was actually in, but JOHN BOY what a special thing to do for this Lady, his character was truly unique!
It ran on MeTV this morning and I watched it again - the more I think about filming the episode, the more I recall, it was a very emotional time for us all. My role as "Mailboy" was a last-second thought on the part of Harry (Harry Harris the director). The "Mailboy" was not in the script, however, while blocking the scene Harry felt that opening the scene with 'Miss Maddox' (Maggie Malooly) on the phone was rather a cold open without any action, in addition, he felt that showing the delivery of the mail was important - so, in that, I was standing next to Harry on set, he said something like "grab trousers and a sweater, you're in this scene." I quickly dressed in pieces from John-Boy's wardrobe - luckily Richard and I wore the same sizes. As for the lines, Harry ad-libbed them to me - and we did it in one take. And boy, do I recall filming the final two-shot of Richard and Ralph, Richard's tears were real, and Ralph's usual lower lip staunch protrusion became a way of keeping his tears from breaking the dam. Lucky me to have been a little part of it all.
Oh shoot... now you have me getting emotional again, John! That was a tough show, knowing it was Richard’s last one. So glad he came back for more and that we’ve stayed close all these years.
I loved The Waltons throughout all of the episodes. This episode was especially touching when he was “taking in” the view of the house during their nighttime routine saying goodnight to each other. Like you said bittersweet. I also enjoyed Richard Thomas’ returns for reunion episodes. ❤️
Great show….wish there were shows like The Waltons in today’s TV lineups for children and their family to watch together. Love these background pieces. Thank you for producing and posting them!
This episode is so relatable to most young adults who leave home. After you have left home, "You can come back, but it never be the same." That is so true. I lived with my grandparents in the '70's. My grandfather would often say to me before I left to go somewhere, "Son, don't forget where you live." I always responded, "I won't." Seeing Zep Walton say a similar line to John-Boy still brings strong emotion and tears to my eyes. Outstanding acting that speaks to real life! Thanks Judy!
That final scene where Richard looks at the house has me sobbing every time I watch it - even when I just think about it! 😂 . Richard is an incredible actor and has the most expressive face. Missed him so much after that. Hello Richard! Happy New Year to you both 💕!
Watched this last night as part of my full series re-watch, and I have to say that final scene on the porch with John, Liv, Grandpa and John Boy damn near broke me. So much emotion packed into such a brief segment. I also loved the juxtaposition of John Boy leaving with Mary Ellen's announcement of her pregnancy. It's a subtle way of letting us know that while John Boy is moving on, there are still a lot of stories left to tell with the family members he is leaving behind. You and the entire cast were really amazing, and it's a testament to the show's enduring charm.
This is something so many people go through, parents letting go of children, grandparents letting go of grandchildren, children leaving home to chart their course in life. Something we can all relate to. The actors did a good job of portraying the emotions we all feel at times like this.
Hello Judy!!!! My first comment here :) When Covid hit last year, my older sister was one of the first Canadians to pass away from it. My sister and I watched 'The Waltons' every week. She was the 'Mary Ellen of our family. When the DVD box set came out, I bought it and watched it (over and over...and over, lol) Now, since my sister's death, I brought out the box set once more to re-watch it. So Interesting though, how much 'The Waltons't series correlates in so many ways to this pandemic in 2020/2021. It goes to show how 'Timeless' The Waltons actually is. I'm on SE 7 (the war era) and wow, how similar we are in correlation to those years in the 1940s. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH for doing these videos and keeping us all connected!!! And what a surprise to see RICHARD THOMAS!!! Really hope we see him again. You both and all the actors/actresses were all my favourites. Looking forward to viewing all the rest of your videos and as Richard said, A Belated Happy New Year To You!!! Much respect and take care out there!!!!! Drew.
Seeing Richard at the end reminded me that just a few weeks ago I watched him on PBS in a Christmas special with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. I loved seeing him in a Christmas production since I have always associated him with Christmas anyway!
Hi Judy...I remember this episode very well....now that I'm a dad the replay of this episode's final scene was kind of heart wrenching to watch and still chokes me up to this day....I guess it's because we raised four wonderful daughters and to watch them leave home and spread their wings was difficult to do...this reminder struck home for me...thank you for exercising my tear ducts once again... :)
Saw it last night on ME TV and absolutely loved it. In my opinion, John Boy (Richard Thomas) was actually the star of the series. OMG "you" are Mary Ellen. ❤
So much goodness in this one. From the info about stock footage, to the scenes that were reshot from the Homecoming, to Richard saying "Goodnight" it was all so well put together. Thanks Judy.
I was a heartbroken 12 year old girl in 1977 when Richard Thomas left _The Walton's._ I loved the show. You were all so believable as a family unit and you were adorable as Mary Ellen, Judy. I loved her. Thank you for sharing and happy new year to both of you.
That's what. I call unity.I 💘 how all the Walton's cast still are there for each other. That's the way we should all except one another in the church body.
That was such a sad, poignant episode when John Boy left, it made me cry when he was on the porch, trying to tell his Daddy, Mama and Grandpa that he was leaving. So much emotion and so heartfelt. When he was standing there looking at the house, I cried, and saying goodbye to his wonderful family. I wish I could have had a family like that... Richard Thomas did an amazing job playing John Boy!! He was the absolute Best, and brought so much to the Waltons. He is irreplaceable, one of a kind ❤️
Thank you. I am 51 years-old and was very young when the show first ran. My family (large- with 5 siblings) often watched the show and we also related to the "Good Night.." scenes at the end of your shows... In the past couple weeks, I re-connected and began binge-watching the series. It is emotional and fresh to view the show at this point in my life. I have two of my own kids that left for college in the past couple years and my oldest (son) reminds me of John-Boy's character-- Solid, caring and doing things right. He has made reference to having aspirations of finding a career and locating to a bigger city-- far-away from home. We get to see him regularly while he is away from college (2 hours away). I watched this episode last night and was in tears. I could relate to the looks on Ralph's, Michael's and Grandpa's while they looked-upon John-Boy while on the porch... I only hope that I can have the same strength and calmness when that time comes where my Son (or my younger daughter) formally "flies the nest".
I think i may have watched this one cant remember it though I'll have to go back and watch this one judy thanks for sharing this episode and reminding me what happens in it if I have seen it i probably have though was when Richard Thomas left thanks Judy need to watch this one again 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Wow! A cameo from Richard! Love him! And I get teary-eyed every time I see that scene of John-Boy on the porch with mama, daddy, and Grampa all realizing that he's soon to leave the nest. So touching.
I don’t believe that I have watched all of the reunion movies, did the original John boy appear in any of them? I loved that Richard Thomas sent us a special message 💕
This entire video had me thinking about my young days and what a great upbringing I had and a large part of that upbringing was watching The Waltons every week. Kind of sad to see them days gone now but the memories remain. Absolutely wonderful that you had Richard on at the end of this video. If I ever met any of you in real life I don't think I could keep a dry eye. I'm constantly looking for a way to get back to those days. Thank you so much.
I remember asking my dad if I will ever grow up and leave home.. He said yes just as John boy did. Thank you for the behind the scenes. I learn something new and remember some from days past. Be well Judy.
Judy Norton, " The Walton's" in a few words was ans still remains "magical". How could anyone not fall in love with the scenes, the scripts. The acting, and writing? Magical...all of it. Thank you for putting this on you tube for everyone. My brother's long ago made fun of me saying I just loved John Boy.. so true. So true. Magical...blessings to you and your family. And John Boy....
Goodnight John boy 😢 no disrespect to the other man that played him but Richard will always be John boy to many of us. But moving on & seeing him grow as a actor was exciting as well, thanks for bringing back these special Walton memories Judy 💕💕💕
I have watched every single thing on your channel Judy. Thank you so much for doing these. Do you get a chance much to talk to David Harper? Was wondering how he was doing. I watched you guys live on stars in the house. That was great. Didn't see Mary, Jon or David. Hope all three are doing well. Any idea if there might be a 50th reunion in Schuyler?
Thanks Judy, you are a breath of fresh air especially after 2020 and the events in our nation's capital on January 6th, hopefully things will begin to get better after January 20th, I think they will. I hope after things get back to normal you will continue to do your vlogs for us. Take care, stay safe and GOD bless.
What about "The Return" and "The Revelation" where John-Boy came back? I bet those were fun to film, having him back again! "The Return" is a very dramatic episode with the mine collapse.
I never knew about the homecoming i have never seen it. Born 1969 I was a kid watching the show. This is so amazing the content you are making we were all so starved for more of the show and now we have this ton of stuff to watch. Thank you Judy.
@@delip9303 I've always wondered that myself! In Spencer's Mountain, the Earl Hamner character is called Clay-Boy and, of course, on The Waltons, he's John-Boy.

I still cry on alot of the Walton episodes. I still watch them about 2 or 3 times a week.
Well put. No scriptwriter alive could have conveyed the true and raw emotion that was that scene. I'll bet the stage crew were overcome as well...

*** I absolutely love watching your show Judy. If anything makes me sad, this show, your comforting narrating and authentically kind voice makes that sadness so much lighter Thank you. **** Goodnight Judy, Goodnight ALL
The sadness of saying goodbye is on each face. Knowing at the final cut one of the family will be gone.
I bet those were real tears of John Boy's at the very end.
Will Geer was everybody's extra Grandpa. Amazing actor. The look on his face at the end gets me every time. 😢
I wished Richard Thomas would've stuck around I really liked Richard Thomas acting as John Boy he owned that role was such a natural at playing John Boy sad this was his last episode
Me too!
Me too
Me too!!
Me too. It was unbelievable that he left. Robert Wrightman was good enough, but he just wasn't.....John Boy!
@@Aroseisarose15 I know. I remember it was the only time my mom let me stay up an extra hour. I looked forward to that night every week.
I'm in my early 30s but I'd watch reruns of The Walton's with my mom when I was younger. This show has a nostalgia and comfort for me too.
Boy, you cast members of The Waltons have all been special people, every single one of you.
I missed Richard Thomas after he left the series. Have a great day Judy.
The show was still good....but it wasn't the same
It was nothing personal but I could not stand the new John Boy. No one could replace Richard Thomas .
Nice his coming back for 'The Return' near end of season 6, and specially nice for showing up at the end here today.
Brilliant acting in this episode by Richard Thomas. I was so sad when he left and the true emotions that were shown by the cast.
I have watched the Waltons over and over again and again through out the years and still love everyone. Richard is still handsome to me☺️😘.
Like everyone else....has aged well
He is a cutie - his personality is just tops too!
The face of a choir boy! 😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😭
Yes, that episode is very tear inducing. John boy doesn't say right out that he is leaving, but all the adults lift their heads like they've picked up a scent on the wind. They can see he is saying goodbye.
The part that really touched me was when Elizabeth found out the author of her fav book has passed. I know that feeling & it runs deep.
I had a similar experience when I found out the lead singer / songwriter of my favorite band, Sense Field, had passed away.
And John Jr. (Writers) didn't hold back, just came right out and let her experience the truth....
I have always found this episode kind of sad of him leaving.
True.
The Walton theme song, I'll never forget it. I was so blessed to see Richard in a stage performance of Twelve Angry Men, it was excellent. Thank you for sharing behind the scenes Judy
Barb, I did as well, in 2007.
The play was great and Richard and the entire cast were brilliant.
@@louannbrill7255 Yes, wasn't "Norm" from Cheers in it also.
@@barbfrank917 yes, George Wendt.
I've never seen Cheers but I knew who he was. Also outstanding.
Thank you Judy, and Richard for popping in!
I think after Richard's last episode the character of John Boy should have remained gone in my opinion until of course the reunion specials. It was a very sad episode.
I’m sure it was a tough call. We were always glad to have him back.
"Good night JohnBoy, Good Night Mary Ellen"..........many thanks for all the memories❣️
Thanks Judy! What a treat! Hey Johnboy! (Richard)👋🏾🤍
Mary
Thanks for watching.
You are correct... and it was always wonderful to have Richard back.
1. Olivia realizing what's happening and leaving to darn socks. 2. Grandpa "Don't forget your way home son." 3. The look between John and John Boy. 😢
So powerful. Hard not to be moved, right?
@@judynorton2598 Yeah good stuff there! Judy just wondering, was Grandma still with Ya during this Episode? I also though you did a great job on playing Mary Ellen thur the entire RUN!! :))
John Boyyyyyyyyyyyy! We All Still Love the Walton's!!! Love that you brought all our memories back Judy!😊💗
I was sad during this episode because John boy was leaving Richard Thomas did an incredible job at playing John boy. The best part about The waltons series all of them is they are so true to life real life situations. It puts a different perspective as to how we deal with things because The waltons were a true loving family thank you Judy so much for doing all of these 💕💕
My pleasure.
Always love what Richard Thomas has to say. Great interviewee!
True.
I've always wanted to adopt Richard Thomas as my big brother. He's just so cool, so sweet and so talented. And so grounded. Love you, too, Judy! XOXOXOXXO
I hear you! He is wonderful.
What a surprise at the end!!!! My hero!
He said "Good Night", that hit home.
How lovely.
Thank you, Judy
You're welcome.
Thank you! Still hard to comprehend how old we are now. LOL
Yes - it was very kind of him. Earl also appeared in A Decade of The Waltons.
@@judynorton2598 Me too!!!!
going to miss john boy glad the waltons did more seasons
I loved The Waltons throughout all of the episodes. This episode was especially touching when he was “taking in” the view of the house during their nighttime routine saying goodnight to each other. Like you said bittersweet. I also enjoyed Richard Thomas’ returns for reunion episodes. ❤️
Glad you enjoyed it!
Tha was awesome, Johnboy jumpin in there st the end.. **Maryellen 💞
Great show….wish there were shows like The Waltons in today’s TV lineups for children and their family to watch together. Love these background pieces. Thank you for producing and posting them!
Would be lovely to have more family friendly shows for all.
That was a heart-tugger, but Richard's dropping in brought me back up! Thanks, Judy and Richard!
Awww.... so very true. Life does move on.
So glad you enjoyed it. A tough one for us in saying goodbye to Richard.
This is something so many people go through, parents letting go of children, grandparents letting go of grandchildren, children leaving home to chart their course in life. Something we can all relate to. The actors did a good job of portraying the emotions we all feel at times like this.
Well said, so true!
Drew.
Sooo sorry for your loss. Glad you enjoy the show.
What a nice surprise to have Richard pop up there at the end. Good vid as always and just a lovely, much needed surprise!
Glad you enjoyed it
Judy...I thank you for keeping TV history alive!
GOOD TIMES ARE COMING ITS GOING TO BE SO GLORIOUS! GREAT TO SEE BOTH OF YOU.
Seeing Richard at the end reminded me that just a few weeks ago I watched him on PBS in a Christmas special with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. I loved seeing him in a Christmas production since I have always associated him with Christmas anyway!
It was a sad episode to me, knowing we wouldn't see that handsome face again.
Sweet memories. Thank you Judy.
❤️
What a surprise to see Richard at the end of the video ❤️ Good night John-boy! Happy New Year everyone
Good night and happy new year to you too John-boy . ( Richard )
Great show Judy. You and Richard never seem to age! What is your secret?
Hi Judy...I remember this episode very well....now that I'm a dad the replay of this episode's final scene was kind of heart wrenching to watch and still chokes me up to this day....I guess it's because we raised four wonderful daughters and to watch them leave home and spread their wings was difficult to do...this reminder struck home for me...thank you for exercising my tear ducts once again... :)
As sad as it was to see him go, When he came back for the movies how happy were you and your fellow castmates?
Saw it last night on ME TV and absolutely loved it. In my opinion, John Boy (Richard Thomas) was actually the star of the series. OMG "you" are Mary Ellen. ❤
So good to see you John Boy (Richard) Always wanted my grandson to be similar to the character you played so effortlessly on "The Waltons." ❤
Yes, he was indeed the star of the series. The Waltons, told through the eyes of Earl Hamner Jr who was the real life John Boy.
This was a great episode, wished Johnboy had stayed for the other seasons!
@@delip9303 I'm pretty sure I read he was only going to be on the show for 5 yrs from the beginning and didn't bail
@@mike-xf6xh The show was going to be only 5 seasons. There was a big write-in campaign, so the show was brought back for more seasons.
@@delip9303 he did not bail. He had a five year contract and honored it. Richard has been a successful working actor since then.

So much goodness in this one. From the info about stock footage, to the scenes that were reshot from the Homecoming, to Richard saying "Goodnight" it was all so well put together. Thanks Judy.
So glad you liked it.
I loved when John boy always kept the children together.
I was a heartbroken 12 year old girl in 1977 when Richard Thomas left _The Walton's._
I loved the show. You were all so believable as a family unit and you were adorable as Mary Ellen, Judy. I loved her.
Thank you for sharing and happy new year to both of you.
Thank you so much.
Yes... a very powerful moment.
Thank you. This was wonderful!
Thanks.
I understand. It was heartbreaking to see my son leave home to start his own life.
He appeared in the 90s reunion films on CBS.
Wasn't he in his wedding special and then when Janet had the twins.?????
What a splendid grand finale to this video! ❤️
It's a sad episode being his last one!
True.
Thanks for having actual captions I am Deaf and they make video much easier to watch.
Oh good. I’m glad they are helpful.
I was saddened when John boy left the Waltons. He was the heart and soul of this TV classic
He was missed by us all.
The Virginia history teacher in my high school was Mary Hamner - she was related to Earl.
I remember asking my dad if I will ever grow up and leave home.. He said yes just as John boy did. Thank you for the behind the scenes. I learn something new and remember some from days past. Be well Judy.
Thank you.
Judy did you ever get a chance to work with Richard Thomas again after The Waltons and follow up movies?
If you remember Richàrd did make two guest appearances after this episode, the one with the coal mine accident and when John Boy almost married Daisy.
Then was John-Boy's wedding and another movie about the birth of the twins💞💞💞🦋🦋💥
Thank you so much. So happy to hear that.
Goodnight John boy 😢 no disrespect to the other man that played him but Richard will always be John boy to many of us. But moving on & seeing him grow as a actor was exciting as well, thanks for bringing back these special Walton memories Judy 💕💕💕
Well said
Thank you Judy 💕
I watched the Waltons every Sunday as a child and loved every moment, I learnt, cried a lot and laughed a lot too, very sad when it finished.
🥰
Hey judy could you do a video on the episode where jim Bob wants to be a preacher he thinks it's a sign
I really like what Grandpa said to John Boy don't forget your home son. Thanks for sharing Behind the Scenes of the Walton's.
The ending of this one always makes me cry :)
Wow so nice to see Richard Thomas. Only just found this channel but sure is making me happy.🌞
So happy to hear that. Welcome.
These episodes and all of you folks, though i've never met any of you are all precious to me. Thank you Judy for making these videos.
Wow, thank you
What about "The Return" and "The Revelation" where John-Boy came back? I bet those were fun to film, having him back again! "The Return" is a very dramatic episode with the mine collapse.
Yes, it was always great to have him back.
I never knew about the homecoming i have never seen it. Born 1969 I was a kid watching the show. This is so amazing the content you are making we were all so starved for more of the show and now we have this ton of stuff to watch. Thank you Judy.
Thank you so much. Glad you are enjoying these.
Love your scarf! Was Earl Hamner called Earl-boy when he was a kid? Certainly doesn't roll off the lips like John-boy. See you soon!
@@delip9303 I've always wondered that myself! In Spencer's Mountain, the Earl Hamner character is called Clay-Boy and, of course, on The Waltons, he's John-Boy.
